Next year's game?

How about adding rock-climbing to the challenge?

http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99995090

Maybe higher points for negotiating an overhang?

What I would really love to see is having the teams try to solve a problem that is real scientists are trying to solve right now. Wouldn't it be cool if a team came up with a robot design that could solve one of the world's worst problems? Talk about FIRST publicity!

Re: Next year's game?

i don't think rock-climbing would work, but stair-climbing would be cool. when i heard the rumors about stairs last year I expected a big starcase, not those tiny little steps that most teams didn't even use anyway. i think that including full-size stairs in a game would be good. it worked with 6-inch ledges for 04, now all we need is a series of them in a row.

Re: Next year's game?

I Liked the idea of this years game with the many possibles instead of one or two. You had all different types of robots this year from hoppers to hangers. The 2x had a nice spin on things this year. That ball was a major thing this year. If not then hanging is the only way to go or mass number of balls.
but team this year with the robots mixed and matched with different element to win the game. like a hopper hanger such as 33. or hopper that can control the 2x ball like 303, or 469. can not forget the 2x and hanger like the beast 71. That why this years game should be like next years. I am not saying the same thing but have the different elements and not just two things. Also with the human play that was great to. I liked that idea bring that idea in a different way. Not just a shooter but have different idea. well next years game will hopefully make my head hurt this years did.

Re: Next year's game?

I like a stairs idea except all the robots start on a 8'x8' platform in the middle that have ten stairs leading up to it. It will have three ways to score including a medium task on the floor and the difficult task of carrying a non-uniform or awkward object up to the top of the stairs.

Wait. Quick rethought. Think 2003 except half stairs(at least five) half ramp (and no way else to get on the other side kind of). Higher scoring objects on stairs side but half to bring them up the stairs to score. Everyone starts in the middle. In the autonomous there are to "buttons" on the stair side. If these buttons are activated in autonoumous mode they will open a pathway on either side of the stairs ramp.

Complicated Game!

I have a crazy Idea for next year's game. It involves totes, small balls, big balls, movable goals, a double-decker stationary goal, and a platform and a tall (12') bar, with approach bars leading up to the platform. It also has a home zone, like 2002. the only things that score points are small balls in goals or being in the home zone. Timing and the totes, big balls, goals, hanging, and platforming are multipliers. HUGE multipliers. For example, if you place balls in the tote, that is a 3x. movable goal is a 3x lower stationary goal is 4.5x upper removable goal is a 6x. big ball is 3x. small ball is 2 pts, and being in the home zone is 8 pts. ex. if you have 5 balls in a tote capped by a big ball, which is then placed in the upper stationary goal is 10 pts x 3 x 3 x 6 = 540 pts. Hanging is a 7x multiplier, touching the platform is a 2x multiplier, and hanging while touching the platform (with an appendage that won't affect the hanging) is 10x. if you hang, touch the platform, and touch your starting zone, that is 16x. there are four robots per field, 2 per side, like this year. I'll post a picture when I can find it.

They need to make a more important autonomouse mode. Like instead of just releasing balls early, have some points that can be scored in autonomouse and ONLY in autonomouse.

and maybe i should learn to spell autonymous

I reckon something that doesn't involve lifting things (Last 2 years have been - Crates. (03) Balls (04), Wont in volve dragging things (this year was dragging goals around sort of, and 02 was dragging the goal with balls round iirc,) it will involve something that can be done either speedily or accurately, (ie fast or manouverable , they tend not to go together.). I dont think it will involve water, as the electronics inside, and so you spend £5000 ounds on the sdtuff then it sinks in testing and you lose it all.

I doubt that next years game has been designed yet. They did not finish this years game until ..... With all the rule changes I think that they never finished this years game. With the field design etc not complete til jus before kickoff it shows that it takes time to design and modify fo the game.

the rules aren't THAT complicated, at least not to the point that it wouldn't become second nature after a little while, but the amount of equipment needed would really make post-seasons a hassle (considering i help out with brunswick eruption every year, i don't want that :ahh: )

If there were going to be a liquid involved it would not be water, water conducts electricity, you would get some nasty shorts, it would be a huge hazard and people would probably get injured. If they were going to use a liquid it would be some kind of non-conductive oil. The problem with is it would rather nasty to have to fix an oil soaked robot, the whole arena would be covered in oil unless they had some kind of clean up station you had to go through after every match. But it would probably help with the stank.... kind of an oil bath....

It will not include water, its not possible, do you want to know how well a control panel works in water?!!!!! It would just cost too much for the teams as any small leak would wreck the whole lot. so stop this before it spreads lol

Re: Next year's game?

(points to that ROV team that just won the national championship)

Water game bashing aside, I've got this thing going in my head. Consider past fields. Wide open spaces, with the occasional obstacle (whether it be a platform, a robot, some bins, or a ball). Perhaps this year we'll see a more technical field, something that'll test the robot and the driver.

Or maybe that's my personal preference...I'm a sucker for uneven terrain, whether it's dirt (I know, I know...) or platforms or just scoring objects that are a pain in the boo-tay to get past.

Re: Next year's game?

I think it would be a cool idea to see footballs used in next year's game. They are unpredicatable. To score you would have to throw the ball through hoops standing vertical in the field. The hoops would have a net on the back end to hold the balls thrown through.

Re: Next year's game?

Ok, this is an official warning of another crazy Beth idea. Please, take caution before reading. ;)

I want to see a game that has something to do with robots emitting sounds. A certain sound (a pitch at a certain frequency) would release a different scoring "possibility." There could be multiple pitches and teams could work together, robots only being allowed to give off one pitch per game. Mind you that there would be more to the game than just the pitches, but I think that sounds may be a cool idea. It would bring a new aspect to the game that I don't believe has been a part of any FIRST game in the past.

Funny story.
At IRI, your dad was looking at my team's 3 speed sotf trannies. He asked how we were going to improve them for next year. We said weight and size, which are normal things to improve upon. Soon after he began to leave, looked up, and said somthing to the tune of "I hope you will need a transmission like that for next year." It drove me crazy just thinking about what kind of game wouldn't involve a multiple speed sotf tranny. I have now stopped thinking about it because, 1) It hurts the brain because of N possibilities. 2) I drove me mad again, because of N possibilities.
I am getting out of thinking for the new game while I can, WITH my sanity.
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH :ahh: :yikes:

The statement contradicts itself. It all depends where the comma falls. Either "I hope, you will need a transmision...." Which means you need one.

Or " I hope you will need a transmission...." Which could mean that you won't need something like that.

It's a hard statement to read. Dave's famous for statements like this

Actually, hockey pucks would be pretty cool. The won't pop (balls), they won't shatter (bins) ... and they would actually be pretty difficult to manipulate, as they're so small.

Hmmmm ... :yikes:

Re: Next year's game?

Hockey pucks would be amazing, but the major problem i can see, is that they wont move well on a carpet surface, so that would have to change.

It would make it alot tougher for teams to build a base that is very mobile. Because to push a hockey puck, you need to get almost completely on the ground. And many hang ups on the possible obstacles on the field could occur. I just think that may make it too tough of a challenge.

I also think Team 66, the Flyers, would have a huge handicap since they are the best team ever.

YES HOCKEY PUCKS!! NOW I CAN HAVE A CHANCE AT HUMAN PLAYER TOO! :p

hockey pucks would be so cool. And they can move on pretty much any surface if you get hte street hockey variety. The field could be basically an air hockey table, or some slippery surface otherwise.
But wait, this gives my dad another reason to tell the tooth story!(it collected pucks) NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Pucks have a nice property about them-

They are indestructible (almost)

They do not have to be slapped with a hockey stick

They stack very well

They roll very well too

You can stick reflective dots on them

You can fill all types of containers with pucks
:)

I could use that to ensure that everything I said would not be believed, and therefore not passed on. Or if it were passed on it would automatically be interpreted as misinformation, and everyone would assume the inverse was actually true. But knowing that, I could intentionally tell him misinformation, knowing that it would be interpreted as misinformation by him and inverted, and he would then unintentionally post the truth, which would be interpreted as misinformation and - knowing it was misinformation - the inverse (which was actually the inverted truth) would then be revealed to everyone. But since you now know that is possible, I would never do that. But I could just tell him misinformation, and he wold interpret it as such, and then post the truth, but everyone else would think that is was inverted truth and not believe it but believe the inverse. So then they would actually be believing the truth. But we already know that I would never leak out anything true, and since I know the potential for the above scenario, I would never let it happen, so everything that I would tell him would have to be real information only, which would then be interpreted as misinformation, inverted by him and posted as real information, misinterpreted as misinformation by you and inverted to be believed as real information, but since you know I would never reveal real information it would then be believed to be misinformation and inverted again into actual misinformation and incorrectly believed to be real information. Or not.

The problem with a tag team match is that there will be plenty of matches where one robot sits out the entire match(a rookie team paired with outstanding vet teams). A) The obvious, they wouldnt be having fun, doing anything with their 6 weeks of toil, ect. B)If their alliance partners win, they get a rankings boost while never taking the field C)If we dont give them points if they dont take the field, they might only get one or two matches worth of points

I say melt all the ice and play the game on water...make the robots slightly waterproof and add floatation devices...or you could go for the submarine aspect...

i loved two ideas on this thread... the stairs and the water. but the water wud be kinda hard with a lot of expensive electronic equipment on board.
the stairs wud be a neat idea if something more was added and make the stairs look "not so challenging". well but anywayz, whatever the first officials decide its gonna make our heads hurt for sure

How is this for a 'real' problem. Marine debris, trash in the water, junk in the rivers and lakes is a serious problem. Most people don't know about it because it is out of sight, out of mind. Last year volunteers pulled out over 2,200 tires from the Potomac river basin. It got us to thinking, if FIRST students can pick up things about the size of a tire (rack and roll), how about a real tire!!

So in the off season we are working on a robot, actually two robots to be used to collect marine debris. There are a couple of articles about it on our website at http://www.kellrobotics.org

This is a tough project but as Woodie said recently at the kickoff it is supposed to be hard.

Anyone want to help out ? collaborative design ? what say you ? It will be something to work on during the off season !!

When will the game piece finally be Krispy Kremes? I can see it now. Stack donuts onto a pole and deliver them to your human player for an eating contest. Tasty Tower.

Defense would be quite delicious in that game.

Darn! Why was it when I was human player I just got to throw poof balls or toss a few rings on the field?

Re: Next year's game?

That's not half bad, good idea there. Another thing you could do is instead of that just have a competition where you basically have to go to the opponents side of the field, where you pick up an 'order' that they have written down between three objects, and there would be 3 different colored plated on the opponents wall, each corresponding to a different food, yo then get one of those colored (metal) plates go over to your side where the three pieces are and then carry them to the opponent's side, and which ever team delivers all three the fastest wins, so your robot can have two strategies 1) defend by blocking other bots from either getting one of the colored plates or getting the food and brining it back or 2) play offense, and actually carry the items back and forth.

Face off could be auto mode then players take over...could be a real action packed game. Can't wait to see them drop the gloves

Re: Next year's game?

I have been mentoring FRC for about 7 years now, and have seen all types of games. This years was the best by far. Like the previous posts, this years game provided alot of different ideas from the masses. Great work to all that perticipated. Gives a person alot to think about for next year, and with the new controllers for next year, it should be very interesting what they will have for us.

What I would like to see is an obstical course that would have many different problelms in order to teams to solve and score points as a group not by any individual robot/team. This would involve autonomous, colors, over and under objects, around things, moving different objects and placing in difficult and easy place for points. Teams could go from one end of the field to the other and return. Bonus points for the best completion time, or points for completing portions of the field.

There are so many possabilities. Let's see what everyone can come up with, maybe even design a game yourself. The thinking that I saw this year has made me proud to be a mentor in First Robotic.

Let's make those brains hurt with new ideas.

:yikes:

Re: Next year's game?

Anything but floppies...

Maybe we could use HD-DVD's... they seem to be really cheap right now :p

The thing I really like in a game is different robot classes. 2007 was interesting because there were two completely different objectives and robots needed to rely on eachother to do both. This year, this wasnt the case.

2004 was interesting because there was like 740 objectives and 2 robots to do it with. 2006 was a fun game in the aspect that we were doing something different than any prior game (shooting) but I still have to say that 2007 was better.

If we could do 4 or 5 objectives in 2004 with 2 robots on an alliance, I don't see why 4 or 5 scoring options couldn't be done with 3 robots on an alliance. I would like to see a little variety. I like the idea of an easy scoring option, but I think there needs to be a need for a few options.

I don't see how a robot could keep teenagers from leaving their stuff all over the house, but I guess anything is possible. :]

Aw, but floppies were great, and when you were finished with the competition you could use them for packing material for your crate! I think I still have one or two laying around . . SOMEWHERE.

Re: Next year's game?

I'd like to see 4 on 4 for the following reasons.
More matches to play.
More strategizing.
Greater chance to be with/against other teams, especially at CMP.
More finalist/regional winner awards to give out. :D

I realize that would be a crowded field and a greater chance of robots not having a major role, however, with the right game and right field setup, it can be done.

After spending so much time, effort, and $$$$, I would want to have the opportunity to play as much as we can.
Also, how about more awards at the division level? Gives everyone a greater opportunity to win something. Leave the CA and EI as the overall award again.

And finally, lets randomize the team # before creating the divisions. I'd like to finally have a chance to play with team 358, since under the current system, we cannot. Even team #1 has to play in the same division year after year. That's probably worse.

Practice match? We'd never get that far. The GDC wouldn't be able to complete their testing of the field elements.
