I'd like to go to MIT, but money- and sentimentally-wise, U of M is the way to be. Besides, they're only #2 to MIT in both aerospace engineering and business. Can't ask for more :)

Don't be so quick to think MIT is too expensive. I got a brochure in the mail about their tuition, and, after financial aid, students are left with about $5000 per year on average in loans. All the rest is paid with grants, scholarships, and work-experience. So $20,000 for four years of some of the best education you can get? Not too bad a deal at all. :yikes:

I just flipped through the US News college rankings for 2004 and noted that for aerospace, U of M Ann Harbor is #3, not #2. But you know what, IT DOESN'T MATTER. Clooooose enough. :)

So, anyone else thinking of coming here to Cornell Unversity? Let me tell you from the start that the place is more beautiful than 99.9% of what else is out there. That alone may be motivation to come, in addition to it being an Ivy League school.

*CRINGE* USC.

Kidding aside, good luck to all with their college applications. I may not know a lot about technical FIRST stuff but having gone through the process myself, helping many people apply to all different schoosl in all different fields, and being a freshman counselor, I'm pretty knowledgable with the system. Let me know if my services can be utilized or if there are any college questions in general.

And c'mon people, where's UCLA on people's lists? It's the most applied to University in the world, I thought everyone wanted to come here. :)

I am currently enrolled in a two year Engineering course at the technology center here in Southern Maryland. Upon completing this course next year i will recieve 13 College credits for the College of Southern Maryland ( CSM). These credits are for various courses at the college toward a bachelors degree in engineering, what kind of engineering I havn't really decided, yet. I have one year to think about it.

I don't normally see Cornell listed as a backup school. If you've got that level of confidence, more power to you.

As an aside, I had a friend who applied to Penn as a backup school thinking it was Penn State. He actually just graduated from Penn this year.

Not to discourage anyone or anything, but those of you applying to *just* Stanford, MIT, UCB, etc, I would apply to a school you know you can get into 100% for a backup. You never know who Stanford's gonna pick. The UC's arent admitting many many over qualified people at this point in time, and I'm sure the Ivy League schools are like Stanford.

Alaina: Make sure you apply for the UoP FIRST scholarship if you end up getting in. I didn't, and there were only one or two people that did =/ I ended up deciding not to go there, but getting money can never hurt :D

My list is still in desparate need of revision...but I've got Cornell on there as well. Along with Columbia, Drexel, Stanford, CalTech, UC-Berkley, Carnigie Mellon, Lehigh, FIT, and Case Western Reserve.

Like I said. It needs to be narrowed down a bit. (And that's just a sampling).

Rugters would be my "safety school," since it's an NJ school and I'm pretty smart. Heehee. =)

Yeah, I know all of my schools are big reaches. The closest to safety schools I have are California State Polytechnic Institute in San Luis Obispo (State school but #1 architecture program in the nation) and then the next one up on my safety list is UCB. :D So, seriously, I know I need a guarantee backup, just not sure which one yet.

Oh and check this site out: CollegeData.com. You can enter your SAT scores and GPA and all that and see what chances you have of getting into certain colleges. It'd be really interesting to see current colleges put in their high school information, and see what they'd get for their current school.

My rankings are:
MIT - Low Good Bet
CalTech - High Maybe
GaTech - Middle Good Bet
CalPoly SLO - High Good Bet
UC Berkeley - High Maybe
Harvard - Low Good Bet
Princeton - Low Good Bet
Stanford - Low Good Bet
Cornell - Low Good Bet
Yale - Low Good Bet

Of course, my rankings are a little low because I couldn't enter my real GPA. It puts it on a regular scale of 4.0, I'm in International Baccalaureate with all honors courses, straight As, which makes my GPA 5.0

This August, during Cornell freshmen orientation, the orientation system will change a bit. Instead of the old usual stuff, booths will be lined up along the main campus roads. Each booth must contain something interactive for people to do and demonstrates some quality or aspect of your organization or club. Cornell Robocup (World Champs last 4 outta 5 years) and the Cornell FSAE racing team (Champs this year) will be there. I will be in China at the time, but I will make sure our FIRST robot is out there :) Come by if you want to drive it. We'll get you on our mailing lists then.

Here's my list:

MRAIT (Michigan Recording Arts Institute and Technologies)
- I enjoy doing music, thus I'm attempting to go into it professionally.

NIT (National Institute of Technology)

Probably more, but I've only looked into these mainly. I'm really hoping for the first one.

Recording Connection
- This has seemed to get a lot of good feedback.

I still cannot believe I am graduating next year ...

But anyways as far as applying goes, I just started looking into American universities like a week ago and have so far come up with :

MIT
CalTech
GaTech

As for Canadian universities .. I have known this for a while ...
University of Waterloo (in Ontario)
University of Toronto (in Ontario)
Macmaster University (in Ontario)
University of Western Ontario (in Ontario)
McGill University (in Quebec)

For all those of you applying to MIT and Caltech, NO ONE from my school got in this year, not even the students who are first, second, and third in the class. And my school is no low scoring school either. These students had GPAs like over 4.5 and outstanding SAT scores and extra-curricular activites and service hours and everything.

Keep your options open people.

Hm, that's not very optimistic sanddrag. Three senior friends of mine got into MIT this year and another two friends got into Harvard (there were probably more that I don't know about but can check school records next year to find out). I don't think anyone got into Caltech though :( Our PTA newsletter had a brief about a Wall Street Journal ranking that was done in May - public high school w/highest acceptance rates into top colleges (mostly Ivy league). Ithaca was #4 (and #1 for REAL public schools, top 3 had placement tests and whatnot). The rating looked biased (since there were a LOT of NY schools) but it seemed reasonable since 10% of the graduating class here go to Cornell each year :P

But yeah, gotta have backups!

As of now:
FIT
Eckerd
Coastal Carolina
Uconn (back-up)

I wanna be a marine bio major, thus the lack of MIT and other various high ranking technology schools.
Plus the southern east coast is WARM, and i'm tired of waiting outside the UTC regional in like 2 degree weather with a large metal basket, and forgot to bring anything more than a sweatshirt
THAT is cold

plus FIT has (helps?) a team, and has a pretty darn big robotics scholarship:D

Fortunately, my college search didn't last too long. I think at this point I've definetly found the college I want to attend, Norwich University, and I've even already applied (I spent a week there at an engineering camp). I'd really reccomend looking at this college for anyone who like being in New England, wants hands on classes, and doesn't mind that they only offer the 4 basic types of engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Computer).

My back up school is University of Massachusetts - Lowell.

Re: Class of 05: Where are You Applying?

PLEASE don't pick a school because it's close, or because it's get good engineering, or because your friends are going there. Pick a school that you have visited, and that when you are there and after you leave you feel a connection to that school, almost as if it is pulling you in. If you don't know what I mean, or if I am exaggerating a little sorry. But when you find the right school you will know it, and you will not want to accept anything less. A school with a reputation is good, but even if no one has ever heard of your school, doesn't mean you didn't get a great education. Believe me, employers know all the good schools, and all the schools that have great programs.

I picked a small school because it tailored to my needs for attention on a personal level, and I felt like I belonged when I was there. Find a school that Taylors to your needs, and go there, and don't let people tell you that it was a bad choice, ever.

Very true. Here's a related story...

One of my sisters was touring Babson, and the tour was miserable because it was pouring rain. But, she left the campus feeling really good about the school and how well it fit her. So, when she was making her deposit, she thought back to that tour and decided that if she could love a school in the pouring rain then she'd love it even more the rest of the time.

Re: Class of 05: Where are You Applying?

I've added California Polytechnic Institute -San Luis Obispo to my list of colleges. It's #1 in architecture, and not bad in engineering either. A plus is that many of my friends are applying there (but it certainly isn't the reason I'm applying) and a pro/con is that it is close to home, I'd really prefer to get out of California for college.

I also just got a letter from Tulane University in St. Louis, who is offering to wave my application fee and essay and they'll give me notice in 4 weeks from when they get my application, so it could turn out to be a quick safety.

Stony Brook is a really bad choice if you are thinking of getting a degree in engineering. They throw you in giant lecture halls your first year and really aren't very supportive. Now if you like that sort of thing go right ahead. There is one degree though that it's recommeneded that you go to Stony Brook. I think it's teaching.

Purdue is my "safety blanket" (almost anybody with good grades and accelerated classes from West Lafayette HS can get in) in case I don't go to one of the above three (which I probably won't).

My main problem is SAT scores. darn you SAT!

Try the ACT. If you didn't do well on the SATs, many times you do better on the ACT.

Re: Class of 05: Where are You Applying?

Ahh....

Definately applying to:
Georgia Tech (it's in my backyard so total max cost per year ~$6k)
MIT (Reach/Dream - excellent EE/CE/CS schools)
Carnegie Mellon (good robots - Go RED TEAM!)
Cornell (my mentor went there - beautiful campus)
Rensselaer (awarded $60K scholarship for RPI - apply for free!)

Maybe applying to:
Berkeley (friend went there - loves it)
Stanford (good AI - Go BLUE TEAM!)
Northwestern (calc teacher went there - apply for free!)

I would be curious to hear from some of the professors/students from these schools. I'm sure they have plenty of helpful insight into programs/money etc at these schools.

cool

Re: Class of 05: Where are You Applying?

Sheesh...everyone here is aiming so high. Here's hoping that you can make it into your dream schools. :)

I might be thinking too highly of myself, but I think I've got the grades (all As for three years now) and the ACT (a 35) to make it into some of the more prestigious schools. I was never planning on applying for MIT or CalTech, though, and I don't have the SAT2 tests that I'd need if I change my mind. So, my list right now...

University of Michigan: In my price range, and a very good aerospace program. I'm almost positive that I could get in, and I like the school a lot.
Purdue: More expensive than UofM, and I haven't been out to the campus yet. I like what I've heard about their aerospace program, though, so I'm going to apply soon. Beyond that, they get brownie points for sponsoring 461.
Kettering: Not as sure about this one, since there's still a possibility that a future in engineering won't work out for me. Considering that I could almost definitely get a full ride if I apply, I'll fill out an application and think some more about it.
Washington University: Farther away than I was planning on, but they've more or less promised that I'd get a very large portion of my tuition paid for if I'm accepted. Like Kettering, I'll apply and think about it later on.

I've already been accepted at Western Michigan...and I'm considering them strongly. At the very least, I've got one college that I know wants me...

Re: Class of 05: Where are You Applying?

I'd like to echo a bit of what others have said: Do not go by the rankings alone when looking at colleges. The difference between US News #X and #(X+5) is very minimal. Do a lot of research on the school, the programs it offers, the size, the location, etc. (www.princetonreview.com is a great source.) See if the school fits your wants/needs. Then, visiting campus is the best way to really see if you would be happy there.

Anyway, good luck to all the c/o 2005 FIRSTers. I remember how hard fall/winter of senior year was with so much college stuff to do. When it's done, though, you can finally relax and enjoy your senior year. Good luck especially to the (what seems like several) MIT applicants - hope to see you here next fall! If you have any questions, PM me.

Congrats Jill :)

I know how you feel, which is why I haven't applied yet ( :\ ).

Again though, congrats.

I'm probably applying to three of those, though I'm not setting my hopes too high on them :)

So.. my list is pretty much:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
*California Institute of Technology
*University of Southern California
University of California - Los Angeles, Berkeley, *San Diego, and Irvine
*Washington University in St. Louis
Johns Hopkins University
Pomona College or Harvey Mudd College
Stanford

I'm only sure about the ones marked with an asterisk though =\
Ahh, I hate narrowing things down.

Watch me stress about getting into college now! :ahh:

*waves madly* Me me me! Hahah. UCLA's admissions is pretty random (well, on the surface, at least..), though, isn't it? I'm not counting on getting accepted at all if I do end up applying (I'm debating about it right now).

Ahh, I so agree. Aside from that, I'm pretty good (if I dare give myself that much credit o_O) on most of my other stuff..

SATs are horrible. HORRIBLE. Yuck.

I think I'm going to take the December (I think? Why don't they have a NOVEMBER?!) ACT, too.. I wish I'd known about it earlier, though. I think I'd do better.. MUCH better.

Good question :D

But actually, I plan to go to Harper (one of IL's community colleges) for 2 years and then transfer to NIU for the 2 years.

I'm applying to the University of Science, Music, and Culture. Also know as the United States Marince Corps.

I'll be leaving for bootcamp sometime next April (of '05). I'm gonna do MOS 5831 - Military Police/Corrections. After my 4 or 6 years, I plan on coming home and attending the local community college to get some sort of degree in Criminal Justice, then using the GI Bill to put me through a police academy. After that, I apply to the police departments I like and the rest should be history.

:D

Is anyone applying to Caltech?

They require, in the essays part, for you to put 'something interesting' in a 7" x 7.5" box. No CDs, URLs, etc. I found it much harder to think about what to put in there than what to write an essay about. :)

Yea, I'm applying there, and I still don't know what to put in there. :)

I've got my MIT interview on Friday, so I've been reading up on a couple of tips for that, but otherwise I've still got a lot of work to do. :ahh:

Well, I just got my admissions letter from MIT. I've been deffered to regular admissions.

I have, however, been accepted to Tulane, which is a very nice backup.

This whole process is so stressful. ugh

I've decided to change my school recently (pretty much).

I'm planning on going to Henry Ford Community College (if anything, to just get all my requirements done [math, english, etc...]). Then, I might transfer to ITT (if I go into the computer field), or I'll be going straight into journalism.

MIT only sends acceptance letters to like 2% of their early applicants. The rest get differed to the regular applicant pool. So I wouldn't worry too much about getting differed.

I am applying there .. I am putting a picture of Aum , my family, and the picture of Banting, Best, and the first diabetic dog that was successfully treated with insulin, all linked to a picture of me. Those are the three things that have had the most impact on me. Aum because of my belief in Hinduism and what it represents to me, my family for obvious reasons, and Banting because my diabetes is such a huge part of me and who I have become.

I was deferred from MIT too (got into Penn State & WPI). My friend at Boston Latin, who moved there from Ithaca in 8th grade, was deferred from MIT too. He forwarded me an email from his interviewer. Here's an excerpt:

Quote:

Just to let you know, most of the early applicants were deferred this year, because MIT had a much higher yield last year and the admission office does not want to over-admit this year again. So the admission rate for early action is particularly low this year.

Jake177 15-12-2004 22:03

Re: Class of 05: Where are You Applying?

So they accepted even fewer people this year? That 2% was from 2 years ago when I applied early and was differed. I don't see the point of them even accepting early applications if they are going to differ most of them anyways.

Re: Class of 05: Where are You Applying?

Well, reading this thread has been a real trip down nostalgia lane. I did college apps last year. What fun. I'm not at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The mech. eng. dept. here is one of those little known but good ones, and I'm here despite the stigma of 'State U'. Some school tips

Boston University- Avoid like the plague if you're into engineering. Got in, didn't go.
WPI- Got in, didn't go. Too expensive and the need for mandatory showers during orientation week is a real turn-off
MIT- Didn't apply, so far above me, it wasn't worth the app fee
RPI- Got in, didn't go. Have you ever *seen* Troy, NY? Ew. There's a reason everyone drinks...
Olin- God among engineering schools. But, they didn't like me :( If you can, go here.

Also, the stress in the app situation is really too much. Fortunately, my parents let me deal with it myself. After all, being a UPS man pays well (or so they keep telling me when my tuition bill comes). Good luck to all.

It's not ambiguous. According to a friend who is attending WPI, there are mandatory showers during orientation week. Lovely stuff... Also, Worcester isn't much more pleasant a city that Troy.

Well, I ended up becoming lazy and not believing in myself. I didn't apply to UC Santa Cruz, I only applied to Sacramento State, and I only applied there because my best friend told me to. =P The tuition at Sac is very low and living there is soooo much less expensive than living in the Bay Area. Plus I'll be there with my best friend (who also will have the same major). :] It'll be fun,

Maybe I'll get my Master's in Santa Cruz instead...

Maybe that was that friend's RA telling him that...although we dont want smelly people to hang around with. The showers were prolly strongly advised.

Worcester may be eh but once you go to the surrounding smaller towns that are 15 minutes away or so it gets amazing.

Since she's a sophmore, I suspect not. But that's secondary; I didn't go because UMass was half the price... Anyway, you consider the options before making a serious choice. The above are my opinions, no reason to get defensive :p

Re: Class of 05: Where are You Applying?

Mm.. final list:

UCs: Berkeley, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Irvine. Last is backup.
University of Southern Cali
Caltech
MIT
Johns Hopkins U
Washington U in St. Louis

Sent in apps for USC and UCs already .. working on the rest. Didn't apply to any early actions, though I wish I could've (I couldn't have even if I wanted to, before).. so I'd at least know if I'd been accepted/rejected/deferred from SOME school(s).

App process is so stressful.. and I'm so tired of writing about myself in essays. I'll be so happy once all of this is over.
