Wifi Networks
 

My apologies if this is a redundant thread, and if it is please correct me and link me to a better place. I searched around and couldn't find anything on the subject.

One of my good friends is looking to set up a Wifi in his home. He knows I'm on robotics so he asked me to ask you guys how that sort of thing works.
The basic questions were what he needs to set it up, where he should get it (he prefers newegg), and all that setup stuff.

Anybody wanna lend a hand?

You mean a WI-FI? A WLAN?

If you look around, there's plenty of stuff. Wired had a special Unwired issue way back, Maximum PC's done one. I'm sure the manufacturer has directions. Try googling "Wireless Network Setup"

Here is website that deals all about WiFI

Basically he/she needs a

1. router (newegg is where I bought mine). Try to get a brand name like Netgear, Hawking, Linksys, etc. If he/she also wants to share a printer, then get one with a USB port. If he/she wants to stream the music from their computer to a pair of speaker then I would get Airport Express ( http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/ ).

2. A Wi-FI card. Depending on your computer, choose a wi-fi card that is compatible.

3. an Ethernet cable for the initial set-up.

Basically that is it.

Two notes I always tell people.
1. Always activate some sort of protection. Either WEP or WPA 128 bit. If you run an open hot spot (unprotected), you are responsible for anything anybody does on your network, especially illegal stuff. Also it easier to hack into a computer that is on the router. Also turn off SSID after you initially set up your network.

2. Store your router in a place with a lot of air, because a lot of them get hot after a while. And do not store them right near a TV or anything that has lead.

If he wants to hook it up to something that doesn't have a pci/laptop card slot (IE XBOX) then you need a wireless bridge in addition to aforementioned products.
From my experience setup is pretty easy. The linksys one that I bought came with a CD and book telling me how to set it up and information regarding it.
