2001: A Space Odyssey was actually based on Clarke's short story The Sentinal, which was published in 1954. Although The Sentinal ends with the discovery of a monolith on the Moon, it does include a reference to an advanced computer system - thus, the case can be made that HAL actually dates all the way back to then. But all that is really just academic, because HAL wasn't a robot and this is just a digression from the original topic anyway... :)

I'll try and get this back on topic or at least talking about the book I Robot. How is HAL not a robot? He reminds me of the giant talking robot in I Robot. The one that thought it was fun to play practical jokes by feeding people milk and beans. The more I think about it them more I feel that this movie may actually follow the whole premise of the book since most of the stories mention a fear of robots.
