You know what, I am THRILLED beyond belief to see a city recognize their team. I know Zeeland, MI put out a sign for B.O.B. (Team 85) a few years ago. Too bad more cities don't do something like that to recognize the accomplishments of their teams. Kudos to Team Hammond and the city of Hammond.

ya great job with gettin the sign and bein recognized! Last year when we won, we tried havin our mayor let us put up a sign sayin that kind of stuff, but the the mayor and the alderman or our city didnt want to have a sign put up. You guys are very lucky to get a sign and stuff.

correct me if im wrong, but Beaty won championship in 2002 and not in 2003?

Re: pic: The new sign in hammond

We were all pretty happy at the unveiling. The mayor was there and he said a couple words along with some people from the school city. They then pulled off the cover (which was duct taped on) and a round of applause broke out (even from some guy driving on the street next to us). Everyone, for at least a half an hour afterwards, just took pictures of the drive team/whole team/mentors crowding around it.

We relized that too, but it is being changed as we speak. It was just a simple mistake.

Wow! Amazing sign - I really wish more and more towns would support their teams like this. Around here we have so many for Baseball and Football Champions, it's a shame we can't drive across Rt. 6 and see all of the Robotics teams listed along the way. :hopeful:

Can I ask what it took to get the sign? Did your team aproach the city about this?

Re: pic: The new sign in hammond

Actually, at the Hammond Team Banquet this year, the mayor proposed painting 'Rosie the Robot', Hammond's mascot, on the water tower. After being told that would be too expensive to the city, the mayor announced he would put up two signs, at the entrances to the city (from Chicago and from Indiana). He also awarded plaques to each of the students, proclaiming their names and displaying the local newspaper's coverage.

Although I can't speak on behalf of Team Hammond in any way, this was personally a great moment.

Re: pic: The new sign in hammond

I think it was a terrible, horrible waste of money by the city. What would posess them to spend money on a sign for a robotics team like Team Hammond? If the mayor had put the slightest forethough into it, he'd have realized that he'd just have to buy another one next year. :)

Re: pic: The new sign in hammond

That is awesome.

Congratulations to Team Hammond, you definitely deserved it!

I think FIRST should move its headquarters to Hammond to recognize the "FIRST Robotics City" (also because I could drive up and help design the game if help is needed) ;)

Hats off to everybody who is or was on team 71 :D .

Your lucky if the SCHOOL remembers your team (fortunately the principal at Wilson is seeing to it that they do).

The daughter of my school's principal was on another FIRST team, so that helps her remember us, as for the school, not so much... yet.

Great job Hammond, you'll need a bigger sign after you win next year, though. :yikes:

::gives max the squinty-eyed look..:: :p It was so nice to actually get recognized by the mayor. I dunno, maybe he just gave us the sign because he's new or something. But the sign(s) should be fixed very very soon, if they're not already.

I would like to officially announce that personally, I am very jealous. Congratulations Team Hammond, what an incredible thing to bring even more pride to your team. :D

suneel112 13-07-2004 22:44

Re: pic: The new sign in hammond

I am jealous too. Heck, with 461, we can print our achievements on every building of purdue (with still more to print)...

...If we use 2000000 size font. :yikes: hahaha, JUST KIDDING.

With hammond changing its sign, it should do it the Indiana way (which is gluing on a plate which says 2005 on it). Then glue a plate to that plate (which says 2006), and in a few centuries, Hammond can have an arch (accross the wide road to the right) of plates telling the years which they won nationals. Just an idea guys! :D

But don't worry. The sign will come to purdue! (I wish :p )

Re: pic: The new sign in hammond

I agree with the sentiment that it's a waste of money to shell out for a sign that will need so many updates. :D

Someday, there's gonna be one of those signs sitting in Irmo. Someday.

That's incredibly awesome. It's great to see FIRST get that kind of recognition. It'd be nice to see more cities like Hammond recognize a great thing like FIRST.

Congrats to Mr. Bill and all of 71 on well deserved recognition. It must be a very gratifying feeling to know that your team has become the identifying source of pride for the city of Hammond. Because of your efforts and success, FIRST takes another step toward mainstream cultural integration. Wow.

I didn't even notice the mistake the first time I looked at the picture. After so many tries, the ONE time we do better than Beatty they try to steal it from us. ;) I agree with everyone else's sentiments, the mayor will have to update the sign again in the near future after you've captured #5.

Darn you team Hammond! I'm so jellious. Heck, VCU dosn't even recognize the robotics regional it hosts, let alone a whole city, or even school. Great job guys. Now let me go curl up into the corner and cry......

*sob*I want a team sign*sob*

Re: pic: The new sign in hammond

the question is...after winning the IRI (which-as I've heard-is much more difficult to do than win a championship*) will you put that on the sign?

*In all of the years that Hammond has won a national championship, they have been unable to capture the elusive IRI crown...until this year...great job guys!

No kidding. Usually, there's just a green sign out on the front lawn, none of this city signage. And even if there is, it's usually reserved for the big varsity sports teams, like football.

Now if I could get a second person from my school to join...

HOLY MOLE!!! :yikes: Wow that is ABSOLUTELY awesome!!

Its true what they say: those who deserve praise shall get it!! (Ok, I don't know if that's a saying but I say it :p )

I agree with everyone else ... and I would just like to say that after working hard and putting as much work on their team as team 71 has ... its no wonder that they got recognized at such a level! Its about time ... I would say!! :)

But ... quick advice... don't let it go to your heads ... just reflect on the reason of why you have it and always be grateful that your efforts get the recognition of Hammond, of FIRST, of Chief Delphi, and of all the other teams in FIRST!

Nice going and good luck on your future endeavors!! :)

All I can say is wow. It is amazing to see a city that is soo proud of it's team. In good old Tunk. our team has won more awards in the last 2 seasons than any of our sports teams combined, not to mention a national award. Congrats to team 71, your city has reason to be proud of such a great organization, one step closer to FIRST changing the world.

Congratulations Team Hammond!!

FIRST would grow a lot faster if so many cities were supportive of their great teams :)

Re: pic: The new sign in hammond

Wow!! That is so wonderful that the city of Hammond would give you guys such well deserved praise!! Team 71 is a great team and they deserve to be recognized. Great job!

One of the things my team was considering was adopting the section of highway that our school is on and putting up a sign that would say something like "This section of highway maintained by the Housatonic Valley Regional High School Robotics team, the Who'sCTEKS." plus some other information, like the awards we have won and such. It would be a good way to raise awarness, as it certainly has been for Team Hammond.

Again, congrats on the new sign!!!
