Joel Rocks

I just checked out http://www.team229.org/ for the first time. I must say, the design is beautiful, very nicely laid out, and the scripting makes things very nicely organized. Great job Joel, I'd recommend that all webmasters check this out, a very good guide for what a site should look like.

I agree .. if you haven't checked out Joel's work, do so. It's amazing.

Yes, joel has got to be the best webdesigner in FIRST. I need to start hiring you out to design all my website jobs. :p Joel, I salute you!!

We got him first. Check out www.rage173.org for early work..... We are having him go over stuff with the website team next weekend so that we can keep his awesome work updated, because I know how much he puts into these sites.

What’s even more amazing is that he does it all in notepad. Very difficult if you ask me.

Re: Joel Rocks

That is like exactly the style I was thinking of for my team's website, with our colors of course. I love that simple, sharp look. Nice job, Joel. It seems to me that is the only way to make a general content website.

Re: Joel Rocks

It truly is a wonderful website! Very organized, grammatically correct, pleasing to the eyes ... top-notch work!

I was reading the grading sheet for the website, which I believe is what the judges were using to evaluate the websites (for the award) and well I must say, it seemed to me that the judges created that sheet after seeing this website ... well I don't know about that :p but it really looks like what I would be looking for if I were one of the judges!

With all said I'm going to recommend our (1369's team) webmaster to take a look at that website and take some good pointers! :o He's good too! Really good but any little help does no harm to anyone!
:D

Just like Gmail! :D

Yes, I noticed the same thing. That's why I love it!

I wonder how much of that is from openFIRST...

None of it. Joel codes all of his sites himself.

Re: Joel Rocks

He also helped me solve on how to make a floating banner for a website. Also, I would love how you do the PDF trick on your website. That is a pretty cool way of making sure information is printed correctly. The rendering time module is also cool too.

Max Lobovsky 22-07-2004 20:31

Re: Joel Rocks

The PDF function really shows you how useful it is to make web pages "properly" with all display control moved to CSS. That, combined with php's pdf functions probably made that little link really easy to create. Just basically dump the html right into the pdf.

Joel got my vote designing the Fantasy FIRST template.
The guy is a genius.

I actually remember taking note of both of those sites when building mine last year, because they both stood out as I surveyed pretty close to all of the FIRST team sites. Both of these sites were in a 'shortlist' I had in my bookmarks of the top team sites out there. That RAGE one is especially very elegant, certainly among the very top sites in FIRST. And built by the same guy, huh? Very nice, Joel.

From what data source are you drawing those random team-links? Can I have it? :D

Re: Joel Rocks

I can't see any way it could work other than parsing TIMS tables. Of course the code to display would be his own.

Joel isn't just great at designing web sites. He is an outstanding, respectful, well-spoken, well-respected FIRST alumnus who nows spends time as a FIRST college mentor.

Seriously though, I would have to agree with all of the above. Joel has been an outstanding member of Team 229 and we appreciate all the work he has done to create our website, on top programming, strategy and of all the other things he is great at and helps 229 with.

If you were at Beantown, you may have also noticed that he wasn’t too shabby at announcing either.

Eric

Joel did announcing, and I missed it, that must have been interesting to see. The Joel I know normally doesn't show too much emotion. Well, we all appreciate the things Joel does, and for that I give him kudos.

Bumping an old thread, yes... but the message remains the same - Joel Rocks!

Even through all of his other responsibilities, he coded all of CollegiateFIRST by himself, volunteering his own time and putting up with my 'well, what if we do this...' moments.

I'm convinced... one of the greatest, if not greatest, webdesigners FIRST has right now.
