Oooh.. I think I did last one week while I was at WPI Frontiers (which was two weeks).. I'm not quite sure, because I know I did check CD at least 5 times.. Hmm

Just a thought, there are other part of the CD forum that people use for their own purpose, such as announcements and the FIRST related organization forum. I would like to request that different party can request to keep their forum alive if we are to go on with this 1 week break. Maybe close most of the normal forums during this break and leave some open.

Ken... no offense, but I think you need more of a vacation from ChiefDelphi than Brandon does. Cal-Games is over 2 months away, I think you could benefit from the break.

Hate to sound harsh, but besides the poll options being rather biased.....it's Brandon's decision in the end. The point of the other thread was to voice opinions concerning the matter. If you want a numerical count, count the replies.

I already did my time. A week in the High Sierra (minimum altitude 9600 ft.) from 7/3-7/9. But even though there was no internet, the cell phone worked, if you found the right place. It is getting ever harder to "get away fro it all"

Here is my idea

Brandon gives extra moderating priveldges to selected/all the mods on this forum and goes on a cruize. YEAH, he needs a break... Let the moderators handle chiefdelphi for a week.. I think they are capable of it, right?

True, the sample whose voting are biased towards being active on ChiefDelphi during the summer.

hmmm a week isnt bad...but whenever i go on the computer, this is the first website i automatically go onto. im liek addicted or something. It doesnt bother me if theres no chief delphi website for a week. its just a week, its not liek its a year or a month or something. its just 7 days lol

It's already like that. There are many mods that have different levels of admin power. Brandon takes breaks a lot of the time and many people dont even notice. Example at 2004 IRI all but 1, maybe 2 mods where at the event without access. Not much can go bad when B is gone.

It just occured to me that some people have CD set for thier home page. This may be a bit of an inconvienence for them but who knows...... I can only speak for myself.

Here's a better option. Everyone who wants to take a break, take a break! We can come up with a list of users who want to take a break. In everyone's public profie, there's an item called "Recent Activity." Every day someone can update a list here with the involved users' "time off" (days/hours/minutes from last activity to current time). It won't block people from reading CD, but it will keep track of who's cheating/posting.

For those more serious about cutting off access, change your hosts file to point chiefdelphi.com to 127.0.0.1. That will redirect any web browser to a blank page when chiefdelphi is entered (unless you run a webserver on your computer locally, in which ase you'll get that page).

But in all seriousness, this shouldn't be a confrontation between people. Personally, I don't think its a bad idea but if its going to be a problem then it doesn't have to be done! :)

I agree with Jessica, it really is Brandon's choice ... but you would expect him to want a rest ... although if you he doesn't well, then you can't make him! :rolleyes:

So, i'd vote yes if it's not going to be a problem for anyone! ;)

The site won't be shutting off. A week without Chief Delphi doesn't require the site to be turned off. If you need a break, take one. I don't; I'm not going anywhere. We strive to keep the site online, taking it offline purposely would be counter-productive.

"Forcing" someone to better themselves will:

a) not work
b) breed resentment in the individual "forced"
c) make you look, in general, like an elitist patronizing [numerous expletives deleted]

If you are serious about this the best way is certainly not a vote! Do you think a mandatory exercise law would pass in the US? I guess, if you were particularly determined you could start a distributed DDoS, a little client that uses extra bandwidth to bring down CD. Or hey! How about MyDoom.GetSomeSun!

After further thought I think I've got a plan. How about a CD setting that allows you to lock your account for x amount of time? You could have a page that shows people currently abstaining from CD. Like Monks/Nuns!

Maybe the people who are on here constantly are the ones who are year-round FIRSTers... the program doesn't exactly stop once the build/competition season is over. Plus, this is a great chance for Brandon and such to revise and add features for the upcoming year. CD dies down enough during the summers that I don't see why this would be a concern... I guess I don't really get the motive behind this.

Check CD? Lol. Some of us have other things we need to do. Now back to the reading for my summer online class.... I try to check CD but usually its when I can. Right now is some downtime from another online forum I'm a memeber of as the largest conference in terms of attendees is occuring right now.

Well, come to find out, talking to the guy, Brandon really doesn't need time from CD, he needs time from everything else! 2 bands, his job, CD coding, listen to coding and something else i dont remember what. If you wanna give him a break at something go see them play at PUB 1218 nearby him and Cheer them on. Or something around those lines. :cool:

Practice makes perfect and he's said he's gotten the hang of this, it is in a form, part of his job. I could see him needing more of a Cruise (like the one in one of his posts ) and getting him away from everything, and it wouldnt really affect much! ok, maybe it would. (sorry Brandon I'm a little sneaky at getting info ;) )

I only check here at night either when I'm going to bed or just simply bored and got home from work. I work an average of 50 hours a week so the hour I spend on here isn't much and its kinda fun to read. :)

i wish i could say i have been around as much as everyone else this summer, but sadly i havent been really active. I mean whenever i get a chance (which is often) i take a glance around, but working 50 hours a week only gives me enough time to work and sleep, i been posting here and there but thats it. But when i move to orlando in two weeks i will be back to full posting again

But, in order to get impartial poll results, couldn't you have kept it out of the voting options?

Your wording forces people to consider one choice "right" and one choice "wrong".

How about these for choices:
-Yes... I'm too irresponsible to control my own habits! I lack self control!
-No! I can balance/manage my own time, and will set limits on myself!

Would these be better?

Or... we could be even less subtle:
-Yes... I'm a moron.
-No! I'm cool!

(Note, I'm not calling anyone cool or moronic, I'm just proving a point. ;))

Hm... this comes at a time when it doesn't matter for me whether or not CD is closed. From my current email signature:

I will be AWAY:
Engineering camp: 7/31/04 - 8/8/04
China: 8/12/04 - 9/8/04.
E-mail usage will be limited during those times.

I guess CD usage will be even be more limited :P So Brandon, if you want, take a MONTH off!

Even if CD isn't shut down for a week every body should still go out and try and do something. Weather its going out to the movies, going to the mall and just hang out or even just throw around a baseball.

I'm thinkin' we need a new gallery - Or we can base the hame off a picture of the user somwhere and just upload the pic to the Who Am I gallery following the new rules to make sure it is you (and not a random pic of something). :D
