College FIRSTers!! What classes are you taking this Fall 2004?

As for me.. well.. One of the possible classes (Physics) I want to take is closed, but it is taught by a fellow FIRST mentor from another CT team, so I hope I can sneak in with permission.

That's what I get for trying to sign up so late.

(Why do classes start earlier and earlier every year??)

Re: College FIRSTers!! What classes are you taking this Fall 2004?

Hmmm...

Marketing Research - Something I've done multiple times before, but never taken a class on it. There's a project at the end of this that I've got some great ideas for... ;)

Operations Research - A deep dive into Ops, in the Math department. Because Babson feels the need to be "integrated", a lot of my intermediate classes were in giving me a broad, integrated view of business administration - so I know a bit about Operations, Marketing, Strategy, Finance, Accounting, all mixed together like a pint of Ben & Jerry's. The later you go, the more your classes become "deep dives" into areas you've already touched upon before.

Web Technologies - Basically, I was bored with the other Lib Arts classes being offered (you can only read so much "Poetry from the Industrial Age"), and the prof is hysterical.

MCFE: New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, my personal favorite. MCFE (Management Consulting Field Experience) is a interview-required class where students are placed into groups to act as consultants to non-profits. My group will be looking at NBSO's membership base and working with them to expand it to a level of consistent, manageable growth.

Because MCFE has no set class time, and all my other classes are on Tuesday & Thursdays, I have Mondays & Wednesdays off :)

The Principles of Advertising, Math 110 (yay for not being able to test into any smart math classes...) and Writing: the Evolution of American Thought. So far, I've only read a couple of the books for the writing class, but they're really good, I'm excited.

Organic Chemistry 2 + 6hr/week lab - It's reaction time.
Inorganic Chemistry 1 - What's this all about?
Physics 2 - Pssst. physics...
Calculus 3 - Easier than Calc 2, right?
Biology 1 (Honors) + 3hr/week lab - Most failed class at NAU, here I come!

I also get credit for mentoring new Honors Students one hour a week, and I should get like 10 credits/sem for being an RA, but I'll happily take the room and board.

I like science and math :)

I think my classes have more exciting names than everyone elses so far (not that they're more exciting, just that the names are):
Digital Control Systems
Principles of Digital Interfacing
Advanced Computer Architecture
Principles of Robotics

I'm also taking Golf to finish up my activities credits. I was going to take badmitton but that conflicts with a lab I'm teaching.

Chem lab
Ordinary differential equations
Either CS201 or 202 (discrete mathematics)
SPAN 330, Literary analysis
SPAN 411, Adv. conversation and grammar

English 489 - Practicum in Literary Editing and Publishing
English 250 - American Literature 2

Freshman year, I was put into a bunch of classes that I didn't need. Therefore, my remaining three classes are all the 'freshman' courses required by the university to graduate. Let's hear it for an easy semester.

Freshman comp

yay freshman year of college

Scott England 17-08-2004 12:39

Classes

ME 5754 - Impact Biomechanics
ESM 5314 - Intermediate Dynamics*
*while it's called Intermediate Dynamics, they mean Intermediate Graduate Dynamics, there is also an undergrad Intermediate Dynamics, a more appropriate name would be Dynamics 4*
plus the ESM seminar which brings the total to just 7 credit hours.

Huzzah for being a graduate student and getting paid to go to school while taking far less credits than I ever did as an undergrad. Though I consider this semester vindication for last fall, my first semester as a grad student, when I had Continuum Mechanics, Fluids 4, Advanced Biomechanics, ESM seminar, taught one of the solid mechanics labs, and brown-nosed in the laboratory I work in now to get picked up on a research assistantship so I wouldn't have to teach any more whining undergrads :)

this is what I get for being undecided... classes I don't really care for, although on thursday I only have one class and friday I'm off.. can you say a 4 day weekend? not too bad for a freshman.. (and i've heard most of them are rather easy, kinda wish I had a math course though- darn Liberal Arts college)

Writing & Literature
Science Tech Values
Intro to International Relations
Career Exploration
First Year Enrichment

Hopefully I'll learn enough to decide on my major rather soon before I blow too much time on classes that won't help my required credit..

Calc 3 better be easier.... hopefully.... please?

Schedule:
Calc 3- yeah Calculus!... I'm serious. I love calculus... but thats just me
Elementary Differential Equations, hence the reason I want calc 3 to be easier...
Physics 2 with lab ::sobbs::
Statics
Structures and Materials

Plus I'll be working 10 hours a week in a satellite lab... and hopefully I'll still have time for some Karate! and robotics... hm... maybe I just won't sleep...

On a side note: Does anyone here go to ASU or NAU (exluding Justin)?

Calc 3
Chemical Analysis
Engineering Physics 1

Honors Program: At least at K-state it is where you have a undergraduate research requirement and you graduate it is mentioned as graduating in the honors program, not particularly graduating with honors (cum laude, so on). You have to maintain a 3.5 or above in a 4.0 scale to stay in the program.

This is my catch up semester, where I take all the classes I've been avoiding for the past 6 years.

If it doesn't sound fun, it's because it really isn't.

Smart Karthik.. cramming in all the big classes in a FIRST off-season semester.

That is one of the problems in being a college FIRSTer; hoping you are taking the "easy" classes during the six weeks - jugling school and team and work too.. sometimes.

I don't know what "easy" class I'm going to take next spring, but it better not be physics.. That's all I have to say.

The specifics are diffrent at every school, but the general idea is that they are harder classes for more motivated students. There is usually a GPA requirement to stay in the program. At VCU, there is also Honors housing, so you are living with other study minded people(and it's really nice housing)

On an additional note with the honors at Penn State any student can make any course an honors course with the approval of the instructor. You don't necessarily have to be in an honors program or "honors track" to make one of your classes honors level. If over your years of completing a degree, you complete a certain number of honors courses (credits), you graduate from the Honors College in addition to your degree.

Re: College FIRSTers!! What classes are you taking this Fall 2004?

Well, taking all engineering classes last year is going to finally pay off (although it almost killed me last quarter...Joseph can attest to that one). My last year (stupid 5 year school) won't be jam packed with engineering classes. So, this upcoming quarter my classes are:

Death & Dying (for my psychology conectration...sounds depressing though)
Humanistic Psychology
System Dynamics
Senior Design 1 (looks like we're going to be making a super stable fly by wire air vehicle! woo!)

Oh, and look! I haven't completely fallen off the face of the earth...or Chief Delphi for that matter. :D

Well, just an update to my first post...

Today was the first day of classes, and I had University 101. It's this small-scale class, like twenty kids, all of which are taking education. So we had to go around the room and say something about the last four people (whatever they'd said), and say something about yourself.

Truth, I swear...

Re: College FIRSTers!! What classes are you taking this Fall 2004?

As Jake (one of the 6 members of 177 who signed up with 190 this year) said above, WPI is on the quarter system, so the only semester long courses I'm taking are Concert Band and String Ensemble (which together count as one course over the entire semester). My other courses are:

A Term: Fluid Mechanics, Kinematics, IQP
B Term: Thermodynamics, Stress Analysis, IQP

What is IQP? The Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP) is one of the three projects WPI requires, and is supposed to "focus on the relationships among science, technology, and the needs of society". Our project falls under the "Education in a Technological Society" subcategory, and, if successful, will transform vastly expand the scope and scale of WPI's miniFIRST program. It's great to be able to do robotics competitions for credit!

MicroComp (so this is a computer?)
Engineering Drawings (I spent the last 4 years learning CAD/CAM, so now I have to learn how to do it by hand - kinda going back in time but ok)

Small-scale??? :yikes: My largest class is twenty people.

I am attending Pennsylvania College of Technology and taking:
English Comp 1
Manual Transmission and Transaxle Principles
Fundamentals of Automatic Transmission
Engine Principles
Basic Fuel and Emission Control Systems

Obviously towards an automotive degree.
