Protests in NYC.

Anyone else following any of the of the protests in New York this week?
I've been listening to the live feed of indy coverage since i got off work this afternoon.
If you want to check it out:
http://radio.socialtechnology.net/
And you can check out the Indy Media Center New York City's coverage here:
http://nyc.indymedia.org/

Some really crazy stuff is going on.
To me this is one of the greatest uses of technology, not to get to philosophical, but it seems as though this type of use of the net is what many people always have talked about the net as being, a instantaneous source of information without as many midlemen.
Whatever your politics may be, i think this is some really interesting stuff going on.

I'm listening to that radio feed now, and it's crazy. It sounds like a war zone, wow.

Re: Protests in NYC.

The protests are large, but largely peaceful. A few dragons got burned, and so so, but that stuff happens at all protests. It shows Bush's true (dis)approval rating :D . I guess NYC was a bad choice for the Republican National Convention. They should have chosen a more conservative city, such as Atlanta or Dallas or Houston. Or, for that matter, Indianapolis. Or is "conservative city" just an oxymoron?

Re: Protests in NYC.

you can check out live webcam feeds from the Department of Transportation:
http://nyctmc.org/xmanhattan.asp#
check outs 6th Avenue and 42nd Street.
The police are using the same cameras that are on that site to direct their forces through the street.
Once again, isn't technology grand!

Those aren't all democrats protesting, most of them are just Bush haters. It's great that we allow the freedom of speach in the USA but many of these people are getting out of hand. The security forces being used to keep idiots from starting fires and disrupting the city could be better used to protect other areas and citizens from possible terrorist attacks. It really is a shame that some people have to act like such fools...

Ummm.... Most of those people are not from the city and are mainly fringe groups. You could have held the RNC in the middle of nowhere and you whould have had the same amount of people. I find it redicuolous what some of those people are doing. Im going to get naked in front of all these people just to prove a point. People rolling around in money dressed as pigs. People laying down in the middle of the street. Then you have the anarchists who aren't even protesting against Bush. They are are protesting against the whole entire government.

There were protests against the DNC,
http://boston.indymedia.org/feature/...4203/index.php
http://boston.indymedia.org/feature/...4383/index.php

Although things were not on the same scale in Boston as they are in New York. My guesse would be that its easier to be mad at someone who has the power then someone who is seeking the power.

As far as the idea that its people from outside new york coming in and creating a ruckus. Check out:

and http://www.counterconvention.org
And why couldn't the same be said of the RNC? Aren't they people from outside of new york coming in and causing a ruckus themselves?

Well, I'm not an FBI official nor in the CIA or NSA, but I think they are most worried about a terrorist attack disguised as a protest. Also, the chances of a terrorist attack, even now, are low.

No matter which way I cut it the amount of protestors only amount at most 12% of all the Democrats in the city. That's not really a large showing. I really don't care what they do. They could go running naked across the street and I wouldn't mind. Oooo wait they all ready did. :)
