The College Football 2004 Thread
So, given that the NCAA Division 1 football season got off to its start today, I figured it's time to start a thread on college football again. So.... having seen one week's worth of games... what do you think? See any great games? Have any foolproof predictions? Let's hear what everyone has to say!
I, myself, was at the Michigan-Miami(Ohio) game today. My Wolverines got off to a bit of a slow start, but had the game well in hand by the middle of the 3rd quarter. I'm excited for this season... we've got a good team, including 3 of the best receivers in the NCAA. The quarterback situation seemed uncertain, but seeing our backup, Henne, start his first game as a freshman and pull off a win is reassuring. Now, anyone else care to jump in or add something of their own? |

[/hijack] I think U of M took a little longer to get their 'feet wet' but as soon as they did they turned it on and tore up the game. Their defence looked killer! :D |
Re: The College Football 2004 Thread
Cal is underrated, even with their #15 ranking (As much as I hate to admit it)
the PAC-10 will suck with the exception of $C, Cal, OU, and OSU. Jason White will not repeat as Heisman winner. U$C should be very worried about their offensive line and wide receivers at this point. Lots of unopen receivers and no pass protection vs. VT. Im gonna say OSU beats LSU tonight and ruins their #3 ranking. And Stanford is still the best :-D Cory |
Re: The College Football 2004 Thread
Woohoo! We Are ... Penn State!!! :roar:
48-10 over Akron... yes, I know it's only week one, however, after last year we can only hope that the excellent showing and the power within Zack Mills will only continue onward. :) |
Re: The College Football 2004 Thread
U of F all the way! =)
I think they're an excellent team and will do great. I'm ticked they got a new coach, but meh. Life goes on. --Dori |
Re: The College Football 2004 Thread
Watch out for West Virgina-theyve been building a solid team over the past few years-and now have an easy Big East Championship since BC and Miami have left. Their Defense is made up of mostly former Blue Chip prospects.
And the Heisman will come from the PAC-10. No real solid candidates past Reggie Bush after the first week-he is a solid threat rushing and also a threat through the air-id say a poor-mans Ladanian Tomlinson. |
Re: The College Football 2004 Thread
Today I watched the USC (South Carolina to the rest of you)-Vanderbilt game. I wasn't too worried--it is Vanderbilt football--although there were a few goofs. It'll take a few games to get the new staff working perfectly (coach Lou Holtz fired three assistant coaches, and one quit...not to mention he took over the offense from son Skip), but I think they'll be ready by the Georgia game next week. (Which, by the way, I have a ticket for. Fwahaahaa.)

GRRRRRRRR OSU had LSU... and then they missed the PAT in OT
|
Re: The College Football 2004 Thread
Im thinking this year is gonna be good-no real dominant teams-like u saw in the LSU OSU game-every team will start to have a chance. I also think for that same reason no team will go undefeated.

Re: The College Football 2004 Thread
U of M's special teams were starting to worry me at first, both their kick and receive teams.. For kick, Miami was gaining too much yardage because the Wolverines didn't stay in their "lanes" to contain while charging.. And for receive, U of M wasn't getting as much yardage as they could have.. As the commentator said, "It's gonna be an interesting special teams meeting." LOL but then again who am I to judge :p
But overall, they did awesome, especially Braylon and Henne, I'm looking forward to this season.. GO BLUE! |
Re: The College Football 2004 Thread
Heisman leaders after week one:
Kay-Jay Harris-RB-West Virginia 337 yards on 25 carries-13.5 yards per carry 4 TD's-equalled his last season's total Scored on 2, 5, 51, and 76 yard runs Cedric Benson-RB-Texas also gets a mention for his 181 yard, 2 td, performance Texas ran for 513 yards in the game, if he had been the number one back, then he would be first. J.J. Arrington-RB-Cal 181 yards and 3 tds. Cal had 4 other rushing TD's which took away from his total. |

Of all the players you listed on there, probably the only one to actually get any votes will be Cedric Benson. Arrington won't repeat performances like that very often, if at all in the PAC-10 games. Harris played Temple, who is absolutely miserable. The Heisman leaders are still gonna be Jason White, Darren Sproles, Matt Leinhart, etc. |
Re: The College Football 2004 Thread
O ya i know that-im just saying after week one-they are the best performers, i knew someone was gonna say that you cant look at the heisman after week one-shouldve said best of the week.
I do think Harris will have a great season though and be some may look at him as a possible pick, but ultimately wont win it. He will probably end up with Big East player of the year. |
Re: The College Football 2004 Thread
underrated team- University of Virginia-#20
Terrific front 7 on D, top 5 at least in the nation, They have excellent RB's, great o-line,Heath Miller, and a smart enough QB to challenge and maybe win the ACC title |
Re: The College Football 2004 Thread
For all you Purdue kids, they looked tough today and absolutely destroyed Syracuse 51-0.
Heismans an easy pick. I don't think it would be fair not to give it to Darren Sproles barring a Barry Sanders performance by someone else. He ran 221 yds in the first game. Check out Darren Sproles for Heisman to see some stats and video. I would definitely reccomend downloading and watching this video Jason White will not repeat (I think heisman voters feel ripped off after his non Heisman like finish last year), but I think Oklahoma is up to the challenge of winning it all despite a slow start. After watching K-state play yesterday I have mixed feelings. They only beat Western Kentucky 27-13, a dismal performance for a game that should be 60 something to nothing. Still the Wildcats rushed for 300yrds and passed for nearly 200. They just couldn't finish in the redzone. Defense had a subpar start too, but I'm confident it will get a lot better over the next couple weeks. Only question is will it be quick enough, a good Fresno State team is in Manhattan next Saturday. |
WHAT WAS THAT, BALL STATE?
Purdue killed Ball State - 59-7. It was a great game.

That was a very nice ending to the OSU and Michigan game...down to the wire with a last second 54yd. field goal...

Re: The College Football 2004 Thread
You all know I love to toot Stanford's horn, but after handily dismantling a better than average BYU team with a very confusing defense (Who beat ND last week, also a better than average team, who happed to beat those guys that callthemselves the Wolverines), Stanford has arrived on the radar.
Probably not a threat to go to the Rose Bowl, but definitely a threat to surprise some other teams who thought theyd have no problem running right over Stanford |
Re: WHAT WAS THAT, BALL STATE?
U of F beat Eastern Mich 49-10! Go UF! w00t. =D

If I had to predict... U-M will lose one more game (probably on the road to Purdue or at home to Minnesota) and finish the regular season 9-2, ranked somewhere #6-10. Anyways, just my little prediction, there... we shall see. |
Re: The College Football 2004 Thread
I'm still saddened over my Gamecocks, who dropped it late to Georgia 20-16. But this week, we've got South Florida, which I think ought to be pretty good.
Let the Leverette-Kowski smack talk begin! :D (Just kidding, Stephen--it's all good.) |
Re: The College Football 2004 Thread
Both Georgia and Oklahoma will lose on Saturday.
I think Miami has the ability to go all they way, except at QB, Brock Berlin has not impressed me at all. So I think they will lose one game (possibly to either Clemson or Virginia Tech), but still win the ACC. USC will defeat Texas in the Orange Bowl for the National Championship. Cedric Benson will win the Heisman, with Matt Leinart in a close second. |
