2005 Palmetto Regional
Alright, so now that Palmetto is functionally full, I guess it's time for the talk to begin about 2005.
I notice that a lot of teams are making a return to Palmetto...11 (teh champs), 34 (Creativity) 168, 180, 281 (teh champs), 337 (Motorola Quality) 342, 343 (Engineering Inspiration, plus #1 seed), 900, 1102, 1287, 1293 (of course), 1319 (Don't sleep on these folks--they were #1 seed for a while), 1336, 1398 (Rookie All-Stars for a reason; if you sit next to them, bring earplugs), and probably a few others who I can't remember. I also notice we're picking up a few new faces...179 with 180 should be sufficiently loud, and I'm going to be interested to see how this batch of five rookies are going to perform. We seemed to get some pleasant surprises last year, didn't we? So, who all is coming? <edit>By the way, I'm going to work on a guide to the USC campus, especially the eating part. I had no idea there were this many options until I got on campus. Palmetto-goers, fear not: there is more to eating in Columbia than the Colonial Center and Wendy's!</edit> |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Well, as you mentioned before, my team (team 11) is coming again to South Carolina Again this year. We decided that the 14 hour bus ride from New Jersey was worth it. We had a great time last year, and of course, winning the regional was fun too. See you in the spring!

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
S.P.A.M. is ready to come back again!! we had fun at palmetto-- liked the cool weather too--change for us but it's all good :)
it should be a fun season and i'm glad we can go back to palmetto and our sister 179 is coming with us- hee hee-yeah we'll be loud and having tons of fun enjoy y'all! |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
It looks like we won't be returning to Palmetto. The trip was expensive, but it was worth it - we had a lot of fun, we actually did well in the competition, we won the Sportsmanship award, and we made a lot of friends on 393 and 507. We're signed up for Detroit and Great Lakes, and we've never gone to more than two regionals.
So...no 818 at Palmetto this year. :( |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Rats!
C'mon, I need another crack at riding in your van back from Sonic. This time, I won't go headfirst into that parts washer, I swear! (long story, and sort of an in-joke) |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Alright, now I've got some motivation for y'all to come to Palmetto beyond great robot action...
FREE WIRELESS! USC's putting in a new wireless network, which guests can get access to (provided your system is patched up properly). The network only opens up http access, but it's enough for me to check ChiefDelphi from the couch in the Preston lobby. I have not been down to the Colonial Center to test access, but you definitely can get access on the Horseshoe, which is a couple of blocks uphill. (If you're looking at a USC map, the wireless network goes functionally from the Horseshoe to Swearingen--perhaps the Bates area at the south end of campus. I don't believe that Computer Services is aiming the network down to the Colonial Center area.) And I'm still working on that campus guide slowly but surely...expect it after ship day. |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
25 can literally not wait to get down there and experience the "southern" play style and a "foreign" regional. Annapolis is the farthest weve gone for aregional before, and we saw many famliar faces there, hopefully we will meet a lot of new people and make them familiar faces. Im sure its gonna be a great time.

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Glad to see this thread opened up .... we are deep into the planning to make this the best regional yet. Following all of the teams input from last year, we are making all of the recommended changes that we can...i.e. large projections screen in the pits, walk through in front of the playing field so teams don't have to climb steps then come down...and so on. We are trying to incorporated as many of those type of changes, as possible. We are excited about the teams that are joining us this year. Great group with a lot of diversity. Stay tuned to this thread as we will be posting more information as it develops. Also, go to the Palmetto Regional website located on FIRST and check in...updated information is starting to appear. Again, we look forward to hosting the second Palmetto Regional and we wish all the teams the best of luck...we (343) will be seeing many of you in FLA a couple of weeks earler. :)

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Alright, as a bit of a prelude to my planned guide to the USC campus, I present...
HOW TO FIND KRISPY KREMES FROM THE COLONIAL CENTER (thunder crashes) Alright, so the nearest Krispy Kreme store to the event site, the Colonial Center, is about two miles away. Trust me, it is not something you want to walk to. But hey, we all have our cravings. Note that if you follow Mapquest's directions, you'll not only start at the wrong spot, but also potentially contend with construction traffic. (Do NOT plan on being able to go from Assembly to Greene--it is blocked for utility construction.) Starting from the fountain in front of the Colonial Center, you should be able to see the Carolina Coliseum on your left, and further beyond that is the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center. These points are important to get headed the right way, and they're really hard to miss--the Strom is bright yellow and new, while the Coliseum is gray and...not new. With that said:
(And by the way, feel free to hook me up with some if you're going.) |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
The Palmetto regional was by far the best regional our team has ever gone to. The weather was beautiful, the venue was great, and it was awesome to just be there. Im glad to see so many new faces coming to the regional also (ie. 179 and 25). You guys are in for a real treat.
|
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Of course 845 Cutting Edge will be back in our home regional. Good luck to every one!
|
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Yes Good 'ole palmetto, can't wait to see how much diversity of teams there will be this year from different states. The only thing I hope to be better this year is the social. I mean seeing a dude in a chicken costume was interesting but not quite what i hoped for. Anyway good luck to everyone, live long and prosper or whatever.

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
I would like to append my prior my prior guide to finding Krispy Kremes. They aren't ten seconds removed from the production line, but they're close.
After finding a slew of receipts from Carolina Dining, it has come to my attention that the Grand Marketplace and the Sidewalk Café sell Krispy Kreme donuts. (The receipt says KK donuts, and now that I think of it, they sure did taste like Krispy Kremes.) I'll take this opportunity to run down my experiences with Carolina Dining: In the Russell House University Union (Take Greene Street (the one that runs between the Koger Center and the Coliseum) and keep walking straight. It will be on your right, across from Preston and Woodrow Colleges.) Grand Marketplace - First floor - The Grand Marketplace (or GMP, or "gimp" as students call it) place has the variety, and is about the largest place to eat in the building. There is a line for sushi, subs, standard cafeteria-like food, burgers, soups, and salads. And they have the all-important Krispy Kremes, as well as a Coca-Cola fountain (rare, as USC is largely a Pepsi school.) The Coffee Cup - First floor - Starbucks coffee. Haven't tried them. Sub Connection - First floor - Sub sandwiches, about the same as those in the GMP. If you have a choice, pick Beezer's, which I'll cover in a later post. Zia Juice - First floor - Smoothies, aimed to be health-conscious. A bit pricey for someone on a meal plan, but if it's your thing, go for it. To satisfy your ice cream fix, go to Marble Slab upstairs. Pandini's - First floor - Italian food. Sometimes good, sometimes not, always expensive. Stick to the pizza and the pasta, and expect to pay at least $6 for an entree and the drink. (And whatever you do, do not order extra breadsticks.) This is also a Coca-Cola restaurant. Burger King, Chick-Fil-A, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell - Second floor - Self-explanatory. Chick-Fil-A is the only one open Saturdays, and Pizza Hut and Taco Bell close after lunch on Friday. Mein Bowl - Second floor - Dining's in-house Asian brand. Haven't tried them. Closed on weekends. Einstein Bros. Bagels - Second floor - The best breakfast place on campus. Period. They've got bagels of all sorts, along with milk and caffeine. Lunch is good, too. Marble Slab Creamery - Second floor - Their ice cream will blow your mind. It does come at a cost, though; expect to spend four bucks on a cone with a mix-in, more if you have to have every kind of berry in existence. Closed Saturdays. Elsewhere on campus (Note: I'm leaving out a few places, such as the Bates location, because I don't reasonably expect anyone to navigate the USC campus, or walk too far from the Colonial Center for their grub.) Cooper's Corner - Thomas Cooper Library (Right before you see the Russell House, on the right side of Greene Street, across the reflecting pool) - Coffee, soda, ready-made sandwiches, chips, and cookies. If that's all you need, you may want to try this place instead of the Russell House, as it's usually quiet. You'd expect that in a library. Fast Break - Carolina Coliseum (down in the bottom, where classes are held--the far side from the Koger Center) - Similar to Cooper's Corner. Sidewalk Café - Welsh Humanities Building (Walk to the Horseshoe, then go all the way back, then pass McKissick Museum in the back, then cross the bridge. Welsh is the building in the back of the courtyard in the building.) - Similar to the above, but it also has some hot items such as hot dogs, Krispy Kreme donuts, and Coca-Cola. It's the longest walk in this list, and I only recommend it if it's nice outside, as the seating is outside. For hours of all the locations on campus, go to http://www.sc.edu/dining/letseathours.pdf For what Carolina Dining says about the locations, visit http://www.sc.edu/dining/brochure_2004-2005.pdf Hope this helps! |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Wow this is going to be SUCH a fun regional. I'm glad to see that a bunch of teams that were at Florida are going to be there. 179 was amazing. So were 180 and 312. And of course our alliance Partners in the finals 1251 the Tech-Tigers. (and most everyone else in Florida). This is going to be tough and fun. Can't wait. Only about 2 more weeks! See you guys there!

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Let's get Palmetto going. Here are a few things to report. Palmetto will be webcast and will be on NASA TV. For those teams returning from last year...you will remember that we gave out several cases of bottled water...we will be doing that again...to keep all team members hydrated. The team social will be at USC Engineering on Friday p.m. Unloading will be the same as last year....just pull around to the rear of the building...unload on level ground...then pull around to the parking lots. We are working hard to create lots of pit space and space around the pits....will know more later in the week. Plans include hanging a large screen on the back of the curtain facing the pits that will be used to project team standing, etc....should be able to be seen from any place in the pits. We will be circulating outside on Thursday a.m. as teams arise looking for teams that may owe dryage charges on their shipping...you know those have to be paid before any crates can be moved...always a pain...we will try to facilate as best as possible.
Palmetto promises to be a great regional with the field of teams joining us. All the great Fla. teams ... 179, 180, 312, 1251...just to name a few...an from the great robotic state of NJ...teams 11 and 25...old friends 34 from Alablama....just to name a few....and don't loose sight of all of the SC teams...several regional winners, finalists, and engineering inspiration award...oh!...I predict that this is going to be wild. Please don't hesitate to email me or any host Team 343 members...If I can't answer...will try to get to the person, that can....more to come following our planning committee meeting tomorrow. :) |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Just one thing to note, for anyone driving in from Assembly Street, or anywhere along that way...
![]() ...good luck. The streets marked in red are closed for road construction. I'd suggest either going in via the US 21 Connector or going Pendleton to Lincoln. I'm not sure if they're open to pedestrian traffic--I'll see what I can find out this week. |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Looking forward to seeing everyone. I keep hearing great things about this venue. One question: Will there be a practice field? or a partial at least?
|
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Hmm... practice field... If i'm not mistaken there was one last year... actually i think it was ours (team 343's) because i remember bringing the carpet and goals and such. I could be very wrong though... most regionals have a practice field... so I wouldn't expect Palmetto to be any different :) If not better ( I had to add that in there...)
On another note: Palmetto regional! Just 8 days away!!! *eek!* I'm SO excited! It's during our spring break so that should make it ultra-enjoyable. We had a great time last year and expect it to be the same this season. Being a South Carolina team I consider this my "home regional" and I wouldn't have it any other way :D For the teams that have been complimenting the regional. THANKS! I consider it a true compliment having been involved in the process to make the regional happen! See you all there! ~Meredith |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Just as an update to my last post here, the sidewalks are open, at least along Greene Street. So walking to the Russell House (for food, an ATM, or The WUSC Challenge) and points out that way will be no problem.
|
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Does anyone know how far it is from the competition to the building where the Social is on Friday night? Can we walk or do we need our bus?
|
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
If you're of average health, you can make the walk. (If you've got someone with some leg problems, you may have a case for taking the bus, but I made it fine last year.)
Just take both pedestrian bridges for the Strom Thurmond WFC, and work around kinda funkily, and you'll get there without having to contend with Assembly Street. <edit>On a side note, Swearingen is notorious for the lack of nearby parking. So I'd recommend not taking the bus if you can at all help it.)</edit> |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Palmetto will be awesome ! Thank you Cutting edge and Mim for your kind words about 1251. You guys were great at Fl keep it up and o yeah we see ya if we do infact make it up there. Should be fun though. good luck to all.

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Alright, one more guide and I'll be about tapped out.
BILLFRED'S GUIDE TO EATING OFF CAMPUS These are my experiences--your mileage may vary. Beezer's (Go up Greene, make a left at Sumter--Wardlaw College will be at your left. Cross College St., and it's on the left.): The masters of the sub sandwich. You can eat a full meal (sub, chips, drink) for five bucks--but have a couple extra for if you want the Beezer's Freeze (two chocolate chip cookies with ice cream in the middle--mind-blowingly good). They also deliver to the USC part of town if you order at least one sandwich. 771-7771 is their number. Sandy's Hot Dogs (Go up Greene, make a left on Main, go straight): As the name indicates, it's hot dogs. Good enough for a letter from Ronald Reagan, and they're not afraid to mention it. They also do ice cream which is pretty good. Again, plan on five or six bucks. (And if you happen to get a copy of The State newspaper, they usually include massive sheets of coupons from Sandy's. I'll see what I can find.) Wendy's (Walk up Greene--can't miss it): Self-explanatory. Subway (Walk up Greene, cross Assembly, then immediately hang a left. Walk past the Wendy's--it's inside the Shell station): Self-explanatory. Sonic Drive-In (Walk behind the Coliseum, take the pedestrian bridge over the street towards the Strom Thurmond WFC, then walk along Assembly--be warned, sidewalks don't go the whole way!): Self-explanatory. That's about all of the fast food places I can think of within walking range of the arena. If I can think of more, I'll post. :D (It's so close, I can taste it. Well, maybe I don't want to taste robots.) |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
I wish the firebirds were going. :( i loved it last year!
|
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
OK...Palmetto is here. Let's get this thread going by hearing from all the teams traveling to Palmetto. Great teams + great venue = great fun...and the competition...well, it will speak for itself. Plans are still on for easy unloading...drive around back of Colonial Center...unload..then continue to drive around the Center. Hey...Corey, I'll have your MIM 343 shirt, size large. Just a reminder...should you forget something or need help...don't hesitate to see a Team 343 member. Please email should you have any questions...I'll be leaving for Columbia early Wed. a.m. to help with the set up. Let's get ready to rumble !!! :D

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Quote:
Yeah, the bus ride can cause the team to go a little...uhhh nuts. This is the 2nd year in a row we've done it (14 hours)...we also drove to nationals last year (17 hours) so we kind of got used to the whole bus ride deal. Last year we planned on LOTR, but you just get so sick of it. I'd suggest a wide variety of movies for the ride back. ps...im sure we'll see you guys sometime on the ride down |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Wow can't believe it's only another day or so until the regional. I can't wait to see all the teams together and see how well they'll compete. Great teams like 312, 180, 179, 1251, 343 and many more which have slipped my mind at the moment will be with us. Best of luck to all teams and hope everyone will have a blast. Let's show that Palmetto is the best competition of the whole country! Go wild and scream your hearts out, but remember safety FIRST! :D

|
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
You've found out South Carolina's secret--we get the cheap gas. (Well, as cheap as $1.979 ever gets.)
The cheapest gas tends to be at the Sunoco on Broad River Road (from the Colonial Center, take Assembly Street away from Swearingen, going all the way to the end, which is Elmwood Ave. Turn left onto Elmwood, and get onto I-126. From there, take the second exit, Colonial Life Blvd. TO Broad River Road. Go all the way down Colonial Life Blvd., turn left at the light right at the mall there, then go straight. Can't miss it.) (South Carolina: Famous for cheap gas, Steve Spurrier, sweet tea, and FIRST.) |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
OK...for all you guys that have made it to Columbia....after those long or short drives....Welcome...and for all those that are still awake and looking at this crazy thread. Remember...we will see you tomorrow a.m. around 7:45...get three of you checked in and headed to uncrate...also, we will be informing those teams that owe some shipping cost of that and steering you in the direction to get that taken care of...the quicker the better, and we can get the crates moved out of the way...then we will be staging in the rear of the Colonial Center for off loading and entry at 8:30...simply, get in line...off load...then drive around the facility and park in Lot A or B..should be some signs out...Don Griffith and I will be working all day in the pit area to make sure you get what you need....so, don't hesitate to ask.

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
So Billfred, old buddy, old pal - have you got enough bandwidth to video-conference the Palmetto regional one-on-one with a poor old mentor in Florida who couldn't make it up with his team? Sort of a solo webcast - could be worth a S.P.A.M. t-shirt to you (or is a box of Krispy Kremes more the going rate?), and I promise I won't tell anyone about this. ;)

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
I've been watching the webcast, and the competition here looks fierce, there should be some great elimination rounds.
One thing that really shocked me...team 157 was not picked! This is a really solid machine with a great team to back it up. Someone blew it in scouting! O well, maybe there was some circumstance as to why they were not picked. Anyway, best of luck to the competitors at all regionals. I look forward to seeing you all in Atlanta. Rob |

Ed: Yeah.. Ouch. x_=;; Addition: Wow this is kinda funny. Sister teams paired against each other all over the place. First it was Us and 342 against 343. We're both "sister" teams with 343. Now it's 179 vs. 180. Should be interesting! More: Congrats Tech Tigers. :) |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Good looking Finals match. It'll be 1251 vs. 179 again! The same thing happened in Florida. But the alliances are much different this time around. Who know's what'll happen. I expect some good matches.
-- Great Finals the suspense is killing me. -- Wow. Good job alliance 2. What a great Finals. |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Congratulations to the winners of the Palmetto Regional: Teams 1466, 179, and 1051! Awesome job guys.
And a BIG Congrats also to teams 1251, 25 and 301 for getting Finalists! Wonderful. Excellent job to all teams. =) Remember: Everyone's a Winner in FIRST. |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Congratulation to team 1251 , 25 and 301 for the great finals.
Congrats to Team 1466 , 179 , 1051 for winning Palmetto regional. ::Tytus loves his robot:: :) Congratulation to team 25 for the General Motor Industrial Design Award. ... Corey, B-rat...you guys were very close for the gold, I believe in you guys and know that you will win the gold next year, you guys rock. Team 1251 has proven themselves again by being finalist again 2nd time in a row this year. I saw this rookie team grow and come out as one of the best. Everybody in Palmetto did a great job, I had fun watching the webcast, wish if I was there. |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Yayyyyy. Judges Award! <3

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Congratulations to 1466 , 179 , 1051 for winning the regional. Special thanks to our alliance partners 1251 and 301.
I personally did not agree with the call made by the referees in the final match, I have to admit, this is undoubtedly the BEST REFFING CREW I have encountered. The head ref Christopher Cook is one of the best refs in FIRST. Team 25 respects their decision in the finals because they are the best crew around. See you all in Atlanta. -Bharat |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
I had been watching the Palmetto webcast, I saw purple hawaiian shirts and remembered team 25 who hosted the first competition I'd ever been to, the Brunswick Eruption. Isn't that a little far to travel to a regional? Anyway, I missed the awards ceremony today, anyone know who won the rookie allstar award down there?

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
On behalf of all the inspectors at the Palmetto Regional, I would like to congratulate all the teams that attended. Each inspection was conducted with the utmost level of gracious professionalism. Everyone involved with FIRST knows that 6 weeks is not enough time design, build and test a robot. But each year the teams are able to accomplish this seemingly impossible task. WAY TO GO TEAMS!
Tim Tedrow 2005 Lead Inspector PS. Team 179, what was that green slime dripping from your robot? |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Congratulations to everyone who competed, especially the winners and the finalists. You all did great, and I do have to say the scoring and the reffing was wonderful. <3 See you at Nats!

Hey Amanda i got a question. I remember when you came by 845's pit area and you had that PVC robot buddy, do you still have it to keep you company? I thought that was pretty cool! Well anyway, great job at Palmetto and 845 will cya at Nationals. :D

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Thanks for everyone for the complements.
Thanks to team 25 and 301 for accepting to be in our alliance. I'm still completly positive that our alliance was the best we could have done. Too bad things happend that way. Although I don't agree with the ref's call in the 3rd match of the finals we accept it because a ref's call is a final call. :D Also special thanks to team 845 for being so kind with us and giving us such a warm time in their state. You guys are awsome and your robot is a great machine. :D Thanks everyone and see you all at The Championships. Dave |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Congrats to 1466 , 179 , 1051!!!
<To 179> you guys' know there's only one more comp. left right? If you win that one, then you guys will officially pimp. :ahh: Keep it up guys...I'm still amazed! |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Hey all~ Just don't forget about 1051 ~ Swamp was great, and I know they will agree with me, it wouldn't have happened without 1051 =) The strategy was what won it, the teamplay in my opinion was unapproachable and I think these are the only teams we could have won with

1051 gave us a hard time with 61 and 108 at UCF in the QF's, they capped like crazy! At Palmetto 1051 adapted and played defense for us in the second two matches of finals giving 1466 and us time to put up the extra rows at the end. Thanks Kyle, but I give a lot of credit to the alliances we've had. It's a team effort all the way, and great to work with teams like these :D |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Does anyone have any video on the quaterfinals and on that they would like to post or send me? Thanks =)

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
I really had a great time at the regions. Thanks to 1051 and 179 for their great work! It was great to work with you guys and we look forward to seeing you all at nats!
Btw anyone have any pics of the final matches from Palmetto? |

http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=36921 It was awesome. The red endzone had another unusual tetra position. (see attached) 1251 was down for the count but didn't give up without a fight. As the announcer I could not follow all the action. It was the most exciting 2.25 minutes in many years for me. I know for the drivers and teams it will be savored for a long time to come. |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Team 11 got judges award and autodesk visualization.
Congrats to the winners and finalists. Who liked our cheering at the social outside? :P |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional Final match picture
How could I forget? Thanks to the judges, refs, crew (specially for answering all of my stupid questions) and of course the MC and announcer! The MC and announcer were so excited and enthusiastic while doing their jobs, it really made the event special!

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Everyone on 845 was talking about how great Palmetto was during school today. I still can't believe this robotics season has gone by soooo fast. It only seems like yesterday that we were in the shop building the claw and constructing the chasis. I would like to personally thank our alliance partners teams 1102 and 342, you guys were great. :D I thought it was great to have an all South Carolina alliance, and it would of been awesome if we could of won. But still it was an honor working with you guys and we kicked some bot. Congrats again to 342 with the Chairman's Award, you guys definitely deserve it. M'aiken, great job getting your arm back together in the short time amount of time you guys had, we'll cya next year! :D Great job to everyone who competed! :]

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Not to get another storm brewing but did anyone else have a problem with the way they started the matches here? Usually the MC will say "red team are you ready? Blue team are you ready? 1-2-3 go". But at Palmetto - she would all of a sudden just "1-2-3 go" and we had 3 different matches where we kinda got caught unprepared (2 of them resulted in penalties and hence losses.)
I just wanted to point this out in the event anyone from FIRST notices this post, because I think it's important for the MC's to confirm whether the teams are ready or not. The Palmetto staff was very efficient, and the matches moved incredibly fast. Much faster than UCF, and it just seemed like we were usually lacking that last second of preparation. |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
dan, that is just how mike & matt (the field resetting monsters) roll.....i dunno about the announcing, but when I was out there the abscence of a blue/red ready statement was the exception not the rule....i know I personally waved off the start of a few matches due to issues with robots (not touching the wall/not turned on were most common)

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
I wasn't there, but from past regionals working with Chaniqua (sorry if i butchered the spelling) I could offer an explaniation. At NJ she did it an would only skip it if we were behind schedule. And at NY the teams never paid attention to when we asked for the thumbs up. Like I said I can't speak for them I'm just offering my $.02 from past experiences.

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
man i was watching some of the matches on the webcast i seen some crazy good robots at that regional. i really liked 25s bot 1466 11 and a couple other teams that i can't recall their numbers right now. congrats to every team there on a job well done.

Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
I don't know how appropriate this is.. or even if my team wants me to... well they are telling me right now to do so..so I do know..
Maybe it is advantageous for us to remain a noname come nationals... but for alliance pairings.. and potentially unorganized teams.. this is bad for us.. sooooo thanks xzvrw2 - first post that gave them some credit, that wasn't a member of our alliance.. we seriously and genuinly appreciate it =) thanks again |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional

That is a good point, I wonder how much of bieng picked for an alliance is Performance and how much of it is reputation? |
Re: 2005 Palmetto Regional
Quote:
Depends on who does the picking. Most of the better teams (veteran or rookie) has scout teams in the stands painstakingly watching every match. They will know if you have an awesome robot but poor allaince pairings, or the opposite, if your robot isn't quite up to par but got really lucky. I know for a fact that we have picked teams several times that were almost at the bottom of the pack due to their performance on the field. They had an awesome bot but just got unlucky pairings. Yes reputation has some part but make sure your performance on the field is what gives you that reputation! |
