2005 Boilermaker Regional

Hey guys! I keep seeing all the other regionals already starting their threads... what about the Boilermaker Regional this year? I am VERY excited about it. The regional is from March 17th - 19th next year.

There is some serious competition going on, and who knows what teams are on the waiting list. There are 8 different states represented so far... even from Georgia and North Dakota! There are also seven different colleges and university teams listed. There is a list of teams below - a lot of FIRST legends and recognizable names.

I'd like to know your thoughts and comments on this regional - what you think about it, what expectations you have, etc.

Re: 2005 Boilermaker Regional

I predict this will be one of the regionals that will have some of the "stiffest" competition. There's a bunch of veterans along with teams that are newer, but really good. Hopefully, there can be new team relationships built.

If you want me to predict the winner from the list, even before we find out the game, I would have to say 111, 93, 1024. (That is if I have to remain impartial HAHA) Just because those teams seem to do really well, but since the game isn't out we really can't pick a good choice yet...

I also think the Purdue regional will be the most fun one of them all! Is there a team social planned?

Cooney Quest is excited about getting into the Boilermaker Regional and we look forward to making this first-year regional a huge success. Look for a lot of fun and some great competition at Purdue University in March, it will be a great warm-up for the Midwest Regional the next weekend.

See you all there!

Oh and I expect some hardcore tailgating at this regional, we'll bring the brats ;)

There are actually two team socials planned, both on campus. I don't know what is finalized yet, so I'm not going to make any promises .. but I hear their initials are PMU and RSC ;) . Also, the academic campus will be right there to visit during the day. We will definitely do some tailgating Boilermaker-style with grand old Ross-Ade Stadium looming a mere half-mile in the distance. There is much more in store, including some special guests, so come March 17th get ready to Boiler Up!

The CircuitRunners from GA are excited about the trip to IN. We look forward to working with the teams to set a standard that will catch the attention of the other Regionals. We have an alum at Purdue and can't wait. See everyone in March. It will be a long ride but well worth the trip.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Kyle - I hope we don't disappoint! It's flattering to be associated with such good company and I am looking foward to a spirited competition in West Lafayette!

If IRI is any indication of how the Hoosier state runs a competition, we're in for one AWESOME competition! Rock on Indiana!! Show us how it's done!!

The three IRI planning committee leads are on the Boiler Regional planning committee (Libby, Andy & myself), plus a great group of others that are very involved with the IRI, plus a great group of Purdue students and faculty and other volunteers!

I think it is going to be a great regional!!

Re: 2005 Boilermaker Regional

Special note to teams contemplating the Boilermaker Regional:

As you may know, NASA will be providing up to 20 "challenge grants" to teams attending the Boilermaker Regional Competition. NASA is prepared to fund grants to 10 rookie teams and 10 veteran teams for this event. Teams, particularly rookies, are invited to submit a proposal to receive one of these grants via the NASA FIRST Sponsorship Application web page. Proposals are due no later than midnight EST on November 9, 2004.

At this point in time, we have received significantly fewer pre-registrations for these grants than the number of grants available. If you are even mildly considering applying for a grant, we encourage you to do so.

There is "officially" only one team social, on the typical Friday nite. But there will be some optional activities for Thursday nite. We may post more info later, possibly along with other Regional info, but not until things have been finalized.
Although I'm biased, I think it will be a great Regional that everyone will enjoy. Even if your robot isn't attending, bring yourself, bring all!!!

All i have to say is that this regional is gonna rock. I've been waiting to see this happen for what seems like ages, but it finaly is happening, and i cant wait. A regional in my own home town, like a 5 minute walk from my house. And the competition is gonna be awesome, so many great teams are gonna be in attendance. I'd have to say that if your missing out on this one your missing out on more then you can imagine.
Aint no party like a party on the wabash!

Right after Kickoff, the Regional Committee will be sending this and other relevant information out to the teams that are signed up. Check with your team leader around that time! :)

i'll be there, coming back from spring break early just to see it. i have space to house two girls, should they need it, and *if* the dining courts (any of them, this is our spring break so they might be closed) i'll donate some of my dining dollars to feeding them. if not, there are restaurants in the union, and i can help donate a meal a day. only enthusiastic FIRSTers need apply. PM me if interested. :)

edit: i live in shreve hall, which is only a 5 minute walk to the venue, and yes, it is a dorm, but i assure you, it's kept very clean and always comfortable. i have pics if you need them.

If I didn't already live in town, I'd be staying in the Hilton Garden Inn located in the Wabash Landing. It is a really nice hotel and I hope FIRST offers packages for teams who want to Boiler Up in style.

just fyi: the res hall food courts will not be open this week, but the union will be with limited hours. there are plenty of quick, cheap places to eat pretty close to campus though.

There are a bunch of restraunts within walking distance of the venue for the competition...
AND
Lafayette does have the most restraunts per capita or something crazy like that of any place in the country! HOWS THAT FOR SUPER COOL TRIVIA I LEARNED FROM JEPORADY! So yah, finding a place to eat shouldn't be a problem.

Re: 2005 Boilermaker Regional

People!!!

I'm pleased to announce a special performance at the 2005 Boilermaker Regional Team Social event.

Dean Simmons and the Kamen Brothers Band will be rockin' the house during this event. If you saw or heard them play at the 2004 IRI, you will not want to miss this!

Please visit their website - it's still under some construction, but if you are attending this event, you can look forward to putting in song requests. This doesn't guarantee they'll be played, but this is an opportunity for you to get your favorite songs played live by one of coolest bands around.
They do have a forum in which you can discuss various things. There may be a specific area for song requests in the near future, so look for that.

http://www.deansimmonsandthekamens.com/home

So - have at it!
Thanks!

ps - to reiterate what Amanda posted earlier, team leaders will be receiving full packets of information regarding this regional soon after kick-off, so look for that and you'll know what's happening each day.

Boiler Up! I can't wait to get back to campus.

For those Purdue first timers, here's a restaurant checklist:

1. Cheese Stix from Mad Mushroom Pizza (This is a MUST!!)
2. Jimmy John's (Great Subs)
3. Jakes (Good burgers)
4. A.J. Wingers (mmm wings...)
5. Bruno's Pizza (Dough Balls with cheese - Yumm)

And for the mentor's: Harry's Chocolate Shop has excellent food and pretty good "beverages" as well.

There are a lot more options right near campus, these just happen to be my favorites.

AmyPrib 19-01-2005 13:42

Re: 2005 Boilermaker Regional

MMMM.. yes.. those are all good. Team leaders should be watching for their official "team packets" in the next 1.5wks or so. This will contain tons of information about the regional.

You will have the option to enjoy all of these restaurants, but you will also be provided the opportunity to eat with all other teams in the Union.
Please read the packets for more info when you receive them, and eventually the website will contain much of the same information for everyone to check out.

We need people for CROWD CONTROL, ROBOT INSPECTION and a few other positions.

It's hard to say who will do well. There are a couple of ways to score and many ways to descore :(

On a different note. I will be a rookie robot inspector. I will do my best so please bear with me and be kind to me :)

Team 548 will be there, we were at GLR last weeks and did well, we capped 6 tetras one match and at least 4 in the rest. The only team at GLR to cap in auto mode was team 66 and it was only on a side goal. We ended up getting beat in the semi's by the winning alliance, 66, 67, and 68. We also had the weekend's high score of 74 on Friday.

Re: Machine Shop

I just want to give a bit of an update and rephrase my post. I don't think I worded it as well as I could have, and some of the information I had was a bit out of date.

Purdue has a machine shop available for use for FIRST teams. Like a lot of machine shops at Purdue, several of them employee college students, and the mechanical engineering machine shop has two or three full time professional machinists who will be able to volunteer their time to help out teams who are in need of repairs for their machines.

As a notice, the ME machine shop will most likely not allow non-Purdue employees to physically use the machines available.

Those are really the main points I wanted to make.

To correct a mistake I stated before, I've been told there will be adequate welding services available.

That's that!

Matt

Folks,

We are only one day away from this much anticipated regional!
Serving as Teams Coordinator, I've had some great requests, and worked on a lot of suggestions for our regional. I wanted to make sure to state that if there is anything else I can do for you (coming as an individual) or your team (competing at the regional, or just coming to enjoy) in the next few days, feel free to get in touch with me. I'll be more than happy to solve a problem, answer questions... pretty much do everything but fix the robot! :)

Also, as a side note, if you are a participant in the regional, fill out your activity survey as soon as possible! You'll receive a lanyard and name badge customized for you and your team. Your team leader has already received information about this. Don't be the only one without one! You can find the activity survey at http://first.purdue.org/boilermakerr...ctivitysurvey/.

Thanks, and let's have a great competition!

Yeah, I didn't mean spy photo per say.
But that pic on the indianafirst website DOES look like a spy photo. :yikes:

Actually, it's pretty funny, I was watching the webcast this afternoon and saw The Beast practicing. But from the angle and the distance that the camera was at I couldn't see team names or numbers. But I could sure see the robot was driving well and scoring a heck of a lot of tetras. I thought to myself, "Hey, I bet that's The Beast" Turns out I was right!

Re: 2005 Boilermaker Regional

One of the best scoring robots I saw today was team 868. They tried to stack 6 tetras at one time! :ahh: They only got 4 to stick though. Wildstang is a sight to see...a very unique lift with 2 tetra holders. Hammond looks pretty good. Tomorrow night we will all know who is really doing good. Good luck to all teams there!

Excellent day of competition so far today. Definately check out the webcast tomorrow if you get a chance because it's only going to get better. One memorable thing from today was in one of our matches, team 382 was grabbing a tetra from the human loader. Time was running out, and they were the only ones out of the home zone. They flung around from nearly mid field to head home, and the tetra literally flew straight off their robot and capped the center goal near the player station. Amazing.

Watch for Scott Ritchie's head in 234's matches. :]

Re: 2005 Boilermaker Regional

Hay everyone,

We asked all attending teams to vote on the below awards at the end of Friday. Just wanted to recognize these teams and let everyone know..

Announcing the winners of these awards:

"Play of the Day" = Team 111
"Best Offense" = team 71
"Best Defense" = team 963
"Professional Grade" = Team 1501
"The WOW Factor" = Team 16

We announced and presented these awards at the Team Social this evening. Three of the teams unfortunately were not there to accept them - however we'll find you tomorrow.

All of the teams have been outstanding so far - this is one tough group of robots and we can be sure to see some exciting Saturday matches.

The team social was fun - Dean Simmons and the Kamens rocked the house and had sports activities of all kinds. Hope everyone had a good time - where else can you get corn-shaped stress relievers? :)

Anyone that can keep CD updated throughout the day, please do!!

Look forward to tomorrow....
thanks!

I've noticed that teams have a match and then are in another match very shortly after (ie: Playing in match one, then again in match 6 or so consistently). How many qualifying matches are teams getting there?

Wow amazing finals. Betty got stuck on the center gotal. They tipped and were leaning over the goal. Then they were helped out but then tiped back and got stuck between their arm and tetras. Talk about Intense Finals. Right after F4 Blue drivers started jumping since it seemed like Blue won BUT after a couple minute wait the final score they had 20 point penalty. Congtrats to Red alliance 71 1024 and 269 for a great run.
Good jub Blue alliance.
Red ( 71 1024 269 ) Vs Blue ( 135 876 93 )
F1 tie
F2 Red Wins
F3 Blue Wins
F4 Red WIns

Wow. Very exciting finals. It was kind of like last years finals at Nats. Congrats to 71, 1024, and 269. Well played.

I believe all teams had 10 matches. Most had 8 on Friday, and a few on Saturday morning.

I don't recall teams playing too soon after their last match in most qualifying matches. I think the spacing was pretty good, but with so many teams playing at once, that might happen.

I think from what I saw was that teams had matches about every 35-40 min, however I did notice that teams had at least one match where they only had 20 - 30 min between matches. It all adds to the chaos and excitement.

The matches were actually random this year for the most part, so you could have as little as 3 matches inbetween your two matches. Every team got 10 qualification matches.

Wow, just got back from the regional, that was INTENSE. Bomb squad, that grabber was the coolest way to grab a tetrahedral object in the history of grabbing tetrahedral objects. Tech-hounds, I wish we could have played you in the tourney, as is, how did you lift four tets at one time (how did you not fall over?) and Hammond, team 71, an amazing performance. Finally, Full Metal Jackets, you wailed on us pretty bad that match, but made an amazing teammate.

Some where even closer than 20 minutes... on at least 2 occasions, we went from leaving the field to being called back for our next match... Luckily nothing broke during those two matches!
:yikes:

I would just like to give a big congrats to the winning alliance and team 1272 for allowing us to fill in after an injury. What a great match only lost by 4 points, we really tried for you. Congrats to all the teams you are all winners!

From what I remember, I would guess the average scores were in the mid 30's before penalties.

Unofficial final rankings and match results:
http://indianafirst.org/webcam/rankings.html
http://indianafirst.org/webcam/matches.html

Please note that on the matches, that the finals are kind of screwy and do not show the first finals 1 match, because the 4th finals match had to played over finals 1 in the scoring system to to a bug in the system.

Yeah - how often do you see a tie in the first match of the final rounds? What more suspense could you want?! Wow!

That had to be the most amazing final round I've ever seen. I had a great time on and off the field. Shot some pool, met some cool folks. There were a lot of people there I wanted to talk to, but didn't get the chance or the nerve. Thank goodness for the forums though. For those of you who I didn't see, I was the prerequisite Duct Tape Bag-Lugging Nerd of the regional.(My shoulder still hurts from that thing :'()

Same goes for the Friday night Team Social. If anybody has any audio, video or photos of the Dean Simmons performance, please contact myself or anybody else in the band.

Thanks.

I thought the highest score was 118? It was definitely during the random team matches, and I'm pretty sure hammond was involved. Black Knight got a score up there at one point, too.

Sugar_Bunny 23-03-2005 18:19

Re: 2005 Boilermaker Regional

I believe the high score was 114. It was team 16, 1024, and I'm unsure of the other alliance. It was awesome. If you where in the other alliance please post me back. That was awesome. IT was a great regional. Congrats to John Novak, Woodie Flowers Award Winner!!

Re: 2005 Boilermaker Regional

The highest score at the Boilermaker was 114, set by teams 16, 1024, and 703. The second highest was 103 (113 with a 10 point penalty) set again by team 16, 111, and 447. That was an intense competition. Congrats to 71, 1024, and 269 for a tough set of semi-final rounds and a nice performance in the finals. I hope to see all of you at Nationals!!

Well, Ben Lauer had some pictures, and Dave Scheck got some video from people on Wildstang (via their digital camera, I think) so .. check out http://www.deansimmonsandthekamens.com/ in the media section for some AVI and MPEG clips. They're semi-large filesize, and only about 20-30 seconds, but it shows what we -- er they -- did.
