The Official Halo 2 Thread

Yeah, it's almost time, so here's the place to post your throughs, reviews, opinions, and midnight launch comments here.

So far the game has recieved nearly perfect scores from IGN and Gamespot and they are raving about the game play, the story, although they only complain about how the cinema sceans use the game's graphics engine, like the origional, to render the cincema sceans, so it looks a little rough.

I'm a little disturbed that you consider GoldenEye to be "before your time."

I will be participating in some sort of geeky Halo 2 party tonight, however I did not preorder it myself. I'll get it eventually.

Ditto, the game only came out less than 7 years ago!

I did not preorder Halo 2 but I will be waiting at the doors when Circuit City opens at 10am tomorrow.

From all the reviews I've seen and read it seems to be a near perfect game, but maybe thats just a bunch of hyped up gamers. I guess we'll have to wait until its out for a week or two and then we can really see how good it is.

My favorite review is at: Teamxbox.com Halo 2

They offer a lot of free movies and screenshots.

Um, why? It was poking at the idea of a game being *gasp* outdated, perhaps?

I do not consider Goldeneye to be before my time. It is an older game though, and I don't know about you, but it just seems so nostalgic to play it now. Goldeneye brings a sense of nostalgia to myself, which is why I posted it as if it were "before my time." Goldeneye was the benchmark multiplayer game of its time - what was that, 5 or 6 years ago? Halo 2 is going to set the standards now, just as Goldeneye did.

Anyways, did you guys hear about the Halo 2 leaks? This has happened with Half-life 2 as well.. it's almost like if you're not good at the game before it comes out then you're at a huge disadvantage.

mmm looks like i get the first review. I picked up my copy last night at 12 am and now its 8 am cant you tell what i have been doing all night. Halo 2 is awesome. The multiplayer is good but i was kinda expecting more from it, but i think i am just used to Halo and have to make the transition. It seems like Halo 2 was geared to the Storyline more. The storyline was amazing Me and my friend played thru it most of the night. The graphics are unbelievable and i love how you have a full team with you that works with you. Overall i like the game alot Storyline is unbelievable.

West Broad? Near Short Pump? That's really close to my house! You should have come over afterwards ;)

2 questions:

1. In Halo, I liked the hand-to-hand combat options. Often, I would use the stock end of my shotgun more than the trigger, during close quarters combat. What improvements do they have with this sort of fighting in Halo 2?

2. The other thing that made Halo great was getting a sniper rifle and hiding out somewhere, like in the cliffs on Blood Gultch (sp?). Are there similar situations in H2?

Gun Butting is the best. Did you switch your button configuration to make the right thumbstick button gun butt instead of zoom? It saves some valuable milliseconds. :D

That said, I ended up working on an English paper and doing some typing for my girlfriend so I haven't had a chance to play yet.

Kyle just got Halo 2 this morning and has been playing some multiplayer to check it out. Hand-to-Hand combat is pretty much the same w/ the addition of the energy sword.

It's also looking like sniping will be a whole lot easier now that the maps are twice the size of the original ones. There are objects everywhere that can be turned into hide outs for a sniper. You can also sniper with the main assault rifle now since it has a scope/zoom.

Radar light?

Do you mean the hud color? It's pink/purple like that when you play as a Covenant in multiplayer (Campaign ;)).

Picked up Halo 2 at Best Buy this morning around 10am (they still had a few hundred copies of each).

I've played for about 4 hours and I give it two thumbs up. It really is as good as the reviews/previews.

like i said i been playing since about 1230 am last night and i havent read the booklet, but for the other people that have played, did they actually just take away the health and leave the shields and thats it. When you are shot the shield go's down but of course regenerates but i dont see any health bars like in regular halo

No health indicators??? Are you sure setting didn't get changed...? (It has been a longggg time you've been awake. :D)

And a question on Elite vs. Spartan choice: Does the type you play as aftect anything? (Important, that is. Not just the color/appear. For instance, can you jump as high?)

Ryan Albright 09-11-2004 15:26

Re: The Official Halo 2 Thread

Ya its been a long day and night still havent slept i basically played about 12 hours then had to go home to study. I am pretty sure there is not health indicators becasue me and my friend looked for like 20 min. Idk about the differences between elite vs spartan. My personal opinion comparing spartans from halo to halo 2 is that when you walk you are slower, i think you jump higher, and the grenades do not take like redicilous bounces, they are more life like, you cant throw them across the level like you could before. When the plasma grenade blows up it has a pretty cool explosion. Still figuring everything out and working on lack of sleep have a midterm at 7 pm and then we are playin again all night....college is amazing

I love the sword to its amazing on one of the levels in the story you become one of the aliens and get to go invisible and use the sword is amazing

Re: The Official Halo 2 Thread

You guys are correct, there is not health meter... just a shield meter. I thought I read some where or saw a video saying that the color of your HUD would change w/ your health but that doesnt seem to be true. Oh well, we dont need no stinkin health meter to enjoy a game this good.

Ryan Dognaux 09-11-2004 21:44

Re: The Official Halo 2 Thread

I just played Halo 2 for about 3 hours, and I gotta say - this game rocks.

With the whole no health thing - if you think about it, it's more realisitic.. because once your shields go down, there's nothing between you and getting shot.

I really like how there are a ton of new weapons, especially convenant ones.

I just can't wait till my copy comes in the mail... :]

Well I know one person who has beaten it. He spent all of yesterday playing it to beat it in one day. He finished at about 9 pm. That is crazy.

Re: The Official Halo 2 Thread

My friend Darcy got it and started playing around 1am. He decided to just play through on Heroic. He had two food breaks and finnished at 8:45pm. He then went to sleep.

Having to hold x to get into things keeps tripping me up, but at least Romeo has a 36" TV in his dorm room. 4 player on a 19" would just suck.

Re: The Official Halo 2 Thread

I haven't played the single player campaign much because I don't typically care for that sort of game, however I've begun to wonder if playing through that might make additional graphics available for Live! character customization.

Live! play is excellent, though quite a bit different than I expected and it has a bit of a learning curve. Primarily, this is because there's really no way to jump into a random game and play with strangers. You have to form a party from your friends list or play ranked games, for the most part, and it's not possible to, say, search for a non-ranked Team Slayer game for fun.

I dislike that I am not very good as well.

Yeah, it does.

3 player is worse cuz the guy on top gets the nice huge field of view and the bottom two get a little tiny square you cant see much of anything with.

I say we get some XBConnect or XLink 16 player FIRST Halo 2 Parties going on every Friday or Saturday night. I can host (1 mbit upload speed) and invite 3 other FIRST people over, and 3 other people can do the same...

Maybe have a Halo 2 rematch of the Championship Finals?

We could be creative with it...

Anyone game?

I'd do it if I had an XBox... But I might be able to beat a friend over the head to let me over to his house. ;)

Well after playing the game off and on since I bought it I finally reached the end. All I'm going to say is, "well that was interesting" definitely leaving the game open to a "Halo 3". Now I just have to go back and finish Halo 1...:)

Yes very true. I told want to spoil the ending for anybody, but the ending is very open for a Halo 3. They say it was Halo 1 in the Covenent eyes.

Madison 18-11-2004 23:47

Re: The Official Halo 2 Thread

I think the best indication that the campaign portion of this game is short is in that I played it all the way through. I don't typically care enough for that sort of game to finish them and I managed to finish Halo 2 very quickly -- with the intent of unlocking the hidden multiplayer level, Foundation.

The replayability here lies in XBox Live and in forming relationships with other players that lead to more successful gaming. It's most satisfying, in my opinion, to be paired with people you know and to execute strategy to outwit your opponents and the online functionality of this title allows that to happen with ease. It's really grown on me in the past week or so.
