Re: Reputation in chit chat?

There are some very nice threads in Chit-Chat where rep is worth giving. Most of them are about technology updates or something amazing that happen yesterday or so. But otherwise, it is basically useless to give reps in most threads. I think its more upto the people to watch where they give their reps to, if they're not watching the quality of the post, then they're not a person of that high quality or thinking level.

One thing we use on 461 is "cool points". They are not reputation points, but they can used for unofficial reputation. Use a blue square for cool points, and light blue squares for "ice cold", from an Outkast song "What's cooler than being cool? ICE COLD!". You can also use uncool points, but with no squares, just a thing that says "uncool". The "cool points" can only be viewed in the chit-chat forum.

I do agree that some threads do not deserve any kind of rep points, but i think there are more threads in chit-chat that do. Either way you look at it i think the people that have more green dots and can give out more rep points understand what rep points are for and hand them out accordingly.

Re: Reputation in chit chat?

it seems like every month since the reputation system was added there is some debate about it. I personally care for the rep system in it's current incarnation for the fact it can be given in chit chat. now i understand and agree that there is alot of relevant conversation in the chit chat forum but i felt that Rep was designed for showing new members of the forums who gives reliable information not for who post cool thoughts in the chit chat forum. the only solution i could figure out on how to make the system work is to have 2 sets of rep (green +blue) 1 for chit chat and 1 for everything else. but i don't want to make more work for Brandon so i am just going to drop it.

overall DJ people who are slandered against in chit chat threads and don't deserve it will eventually go positive again and it wont matter. and for those who gain tons of rep in the chit chat, if they don;t post worthwhile topics people will know this and look past the little green squares

I agree--anyone who manages to amass a slew of green dots from meaningless posts will be known as such. Meanwhile, folks who make posts worth something, rep or no rep, will be known. (Like that archiver fellow--no rep, but everyone who's made use of his (or her?) services is glad he (she?) is there.)

But just as a thought, and this is a bit on the radical side, what about an option that would allow the initial poster of a thread to declare it a no-rep thread? (I would imagine you'd have to allow rep on the initial post, to act as a check against someone who starts thread after thread.)

Just a thought--modify or ignore at your convenience.

I like the idea, but it means more work for Brandon... I always feel bad agreeing with forum improvements... :yikes:

And, my feeling on rep in chit-chat is that this thread is from November of 2004. ;)

Re: Reputation in chit chat?

I don't really think it makes a difference. As a lot of people have said, there is a lot of things said in the Chit-Chat threads that are pointless and do not warrant giving reputation (i.e. someone giving rep. points to someone for posting in the 1-1000 thread).

However, some of the Chit-Chat posts deserve reputation. Some of them make you laugh, others make you think and some enlighten you on current events.

Regarding this (which was a real Chit-Chat post), this (which was in the Rumor Mill) and this (which was in the General Forum): it probably had something to do with spelling and grammar, and the fact that there is little or no content in each of those original posts.

  1. So which is it? You either care (and maybe want those tips), or you don't (and yet ask for tips anyway). Did you read the fourth link? It contains many such tips.
  2. Who hates what? I'll admit to hating content-less posts, but that's as far as I'm willing to go.
  3. Petulance (i.e. whining about it) won't get you anywhere. You "tell the moderator" yourself, by sending a private message to Brandon Martus, explaining your request. He may or may not oblige you, depending on your reasons for asking.
  4. Quitting because you feel persecuted isn't usually a good plan. It won't get you anywhere. When nobody's actually persecuting you, its an even worse idea.
  5. Don't be overly concerned about your reputation score. It's just a sort of popularity contest (broadly speaking, anyway...).

Re: Reputation in chit chat?

I can see both sides of the issue here but maby making Chit-Chat rep count for less or make only good rep available in that forum would help so people are less likely to lose rep for their opinion or knowledge (or lack of in my case)
