Re: Do you like the new logo?

Here's a problem my team might have with this new logo. We just painted out trailer last year, so it has the old logo. I seriously doubt we will repaint the logo on there...so I guess you could call us old school. :p But, I don't like the new logo at all! I didn't really see a need for the new one...just my views on it...

i'm with swampdude, i like the new logo. i think the font looks better, and the pictorial part is simpler. personally i never much liked the original FIRST logo either. when i first saw it, i wasn't sure what to make of it...i'd much prefer something more like the MLB or NBA logos, which at least give you some sort of idea what they're representing. i see someone walking through the mall with a FIRST logo on the back of their shirt, and i'm gonna think "ok, that fella must like shapes" instead of "that guy is part of a competitive robotics league".

Re: Do you like the new logo?

To me the hardest part of this change, is the fact that we have recieved permission to modify the old logo, paid set up fees for getting it screenprinted and embroidered, and now we can no longer use it. The other part is that when designing a website, you now have to form the website around the new logo, because you can't modify the background, and just sticking it on a website as is, in place of the old just wouldn't look right if you dont really have any white or black spaces on your site, as in with our website http://www.rage173.org where we have no white or black spaces, we will now have to redesign the site to make the FIRST logo look correct, and we will have to change around the font, because they also what certain fonts used with the new logo.

While I understand they want to re-brand and the reasons behind it, it just seems like it has become a larger hassle then they may have thought.

I would agree to that...except for one thing. What would that robot look like? I mean, FIRST teams crank out some interesting robots!

i'm not sure...maybe something similar to what team Hammond uses on their website, or a team 75ish arm and claw. or maybe it doesn't even have to be a complete robot, instead, some inter meshing gears, for example.

i don't like it .. you can't just glance at it and know exactly that it is FIRST. But i am so glad they kept the triangle circle and square ... But they seem unproportional ....

It's a concept.

Bring it up in 2019, when FIRST would be due for a new logo* :D

*That figure is assuming the old logo was from 1989--I know it was on stuff from 1993.

Re: Do you like the new logo?

My feelings about the logo are still mixed. I like the absence of the black lines around the shapes, but the new design seems squashed. I like the rectangular design better than the new squarer one. The italic text also somehow strikes me as strange, it made me begin to think that the word FIRST looked funny after a while, something I never noticed in two years of seeing the old logo. Now that I think about this, this is probably because the FIR is seperated slightly from the ST, which are also connected, unlike the other letters. The addition of the gray 3D effects may also make this logo harder to put on some t-shirts or giveaways. For this purpose the the black lines might be helpful, especially around the top of the circle, which blends into white backgrounds.

I'll have to see if it grows on me...

Wow. I love how FIRST misuses their own logo on the page that tells us how we can't misuse it. On http://www.usfirst.org/4vol/resource...ics/index.html their red navigation bar is too close to the logo. (And personally, I don't like how it looks on the page, anyways. It looks really odd in grayscale. It's too square for the page, too.) I guess they don't expect people to 'learn by example' :)

I don't really care for the new logo too much... it looks like one of the higher ups at FIRST was like "Hey Jim*, we need a flashy logo, you know, one that the kids can relate to... see what you can do!" And thus, Jim worked tediously into the night running on 3 cups of coffee and a granola bar. Using only MS Paint and Word, Jim created the current FIRST logo.

And that my friends is how I think the current logo came about. :]

(*Jim is a fake name used to protect the actual creator of this logo.)

Re: Do you like the new logo?

This logo is so bland. FIRST claims that it is an "Evolution" that coincides with the robobtics competition, but it is not in anyway. The logo got worse, while in real life, FIRST got better...

It's OK...but I really don't think there was any need to change it at all... I'm just glad they kept the triangle/circle/square format... :]

Re: Do you like the new logo?

No. No. And... Oh yeah, no, I do not like the new logo. Too light, too soft. The old logo had just this wonderful thing about it. The old logo represented FIRST as not another stereotypical 'student' organization, but as a force to be reckoned with.

With the change in the logo, I can't imagine what's going to happen to the medals that are handed out. I hope they don't change.
