Jan. 25, 2005 has been designated as a day to recognized mentors as part of an entire month to recognize mentors. Here in Maryland I am linking up with all sorts of activities in Jan., to recruit and publicize mentoring. We have a great opportunity here. |

Re: Jan. 25 is Thank Your Mentor Day
I think this is a great idea, and definitely keep us up to date with what we can do for FIRST mentors. I know personally, I have now been a mentor as both a college student, and now as the team lead... but I could never have the team we have today without all of our other mentors on the team. And when I see them and the students working together, I realize how great this program is, but also how much we need to make sure we take special care of those people. I personally gave holiday cards and little teddy bears out to all my mentors to say thanks for their help, but I think reminding everyone with a special day for the mentors is a great idea.
I see Steve W's point in that we dont need another "Halmark Holiday" to think of our mentors, but sometimes its nice to have a reminder. Plus its right in the middle of build season, so what better time to take an hour out and celebrate our mentors, and realize why we are doing this :) Let us know what you come up with! |

:D Of course we're talking about a team where disgruntled students frequently duct tape their mentors to the wall. I propose a "Mentors get EVEN with the students" day... Snarkiness aside - although I reside in Steve W's camp on the awkwardness of mentors setting up a day to recognize themselves, you can't question the fact that there ARE mentors who have to carefully weigh the benefits between mentoring a FIRST team vs spending time with the family, at work, other hobbies, etc. For these mentors, the choice to participate in FIRST is hardly a given, and with good reason - FIRST means a lot, but it ain't everything. And quite honestly, the best mentors are often the ones with too much on their plate already. If a little recognition saves or gains a mentor, then bring on "Thank Your Mentor day," self-serving or not. |

is the link to entering your testimonial for a mentor for this project, www.whomentoredyou.org -Need to limit to 300 words, and they are listed in order of the mentor's last name. The site will add and remove these as they see fit, but will keep all of them. -Even if yours does not get posted, be sure to print it out and give it to your mentor on Jan. 25. -Suggestion: why doesn't everyone mention FIRST(For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) :)in their first sentence. -Spread the word! This is going to be fun. |
Re: Jan. 25 is Thank Your Mentor Day
I posted in the white papers a one-page I will be handing out to team leaders (not the mentors) about thank your mentor day with some ideas.
Although not listed, this would be a great time to focus on a WFA or an UFH nomination. This is not about the mentors recognizing themselves. This is about the students recognizing the mentors and telling the community about it. |

But I can see it as a good time to do it too since everyone on the team is probably engaged and around at that point. I will try to watch this thread...but for now, I have to go home and figure out how to fight the coming snows to make it to the kick-off tomorrow! Yike,..,D-Day is so close I can taste it! :ahh: |
Re: Jan. 25 is Thank Your Mentor Day
Wow we could have a lot of fun with this, seeing as how Dave Lavery is our mentor. We have to think up some good ideas for this.

Re: Jan. 25 is Thank Your Mentor Day
Just a reminder that tomorrow, Jan. 25, is the day. Anyone doing anything special? As Senior Mentor I am going to a gathering with lots of corporations to talk about how companies can have their employees be involved in mentoring.

On January 25th from 4-6pm, our team is hosting a get-together we call "Tea with the Robots". And, yes, we will have tea. The guests are our mentors and parents as well, we consider them all mentors. They all will sign in to show they have attended, and we will either lead them into the room where the guys are building the robot (so they can see exactly what it is we do, since hardly any of them know just yet), or they will head into the room with the food. We plan on having it all fancy-like, with table skirts, table cloths, fancy plates, a nice coffee pot, you name it. It's going to be a really fun time. We are also hoping that some outsiders and members of our community will stop by. Great way to spread FIRST's message! Attached I have a copy of the invite. I have crossed out the numbers and emails under RSVP, just in case. ;) Don't want any of y'all callin' my house! |

Re: Jan. 25 is Thank Your Mentor Day
For Thank Your Mentor Day our team bought a gift for the Head Adviser for the team.
It was more of a gag gift than anything, but it still counts right? What it is, is a cool looking clock that runs on hamster power. What this clock does is make the hamster run in the wheel which then turns a bunch of "chairman's award" looking gears in the back and changes the minute on every minute. It is really cool. The reason we got this, was that our Head Adviser is an older gentleman, and is known to lose stuff from on his desk and is sometimes forgetful (something that I guess comes with teaching trouble makers like the ones in HS for over 30 years:yikes: :ahh: ). Sometimes we kid with him that his hamster died. Here are some photo's of him opening the gift tonight. http://www.team237.com/gallery/Build-Season-2005?page=3 A close up picture of the clock can be seen here, as well as the intricate gear system in the back of the clock controlling the hands on the clock. http://www.whatonearthcatalog.com/gr...rge/AS5122.jpg |
Re: Jan. 25 is Thank Your Mentor Day
Just a reminder that January 25, 2007 is the 4th annual Thank Your Mentor Day. Take five minutes out of your busy day to write an e-mail, send a card, pick up your cellphone and THANK YOUR MENTORS. They'll feel good, and I promise, so will you!
