Exclusive IDE Download Link

Here is a link to the compiler that MPLab is generously providing for FIRST teams. The link is in the left-most column of the USFirst site, underneath "Kickoff". It's titled "Microchip Software downloads". If you can't find the link, then USFirst has probably removed it at MPLab's request.

Please remember that this compiler is to be used for FIRST related things ONLY.... if you have a problem with that then don't follow the link below. Please do not distribute the compiler.

http://www.usfirst.org

Enjoy!

Dave

Re: Exclusive IDE Download Link

I'm going to tell you exactly what I PMed Brandon as far as this link goes. And keep in mind, this is only my OPINION.

"During Kickoff Dave made a big point of saying not to extend the compiler to outside sources. I know you know what I'm talking about. Anyway, though I know this site is used for FIRST discussion, in my book, that link should NOT be posted on chiefdelphi. It seems to me that it will get around through word of mouth for the people who have not seen the video. Besides, students spend tons of time on the FIRST site during build season and would probably stumble across it anyway.

I'm just worried that, in my opinion, CD is a lot more public than FIRST's site, and that Microchips' "gift" will become...thievery.

I am PMing you asking you to please remove this thread, if you agree with me."

MrToast 08-01-2005 13:15

Re: Exclusive IDE Download Link

Except that you can get that link off the MAIN PAGE of www.usfirst.org....

Don't see the problem of having it be in an obscure thread when it's on FIRST's main page.....

From what I understand they're only going to keep that link up on the usfirst site for two weeks only and after that you'll have to contact FIRST for the software. What MPLab has done is VERY generous and it's understandable that they don't want a permanent link. However, posting the link on CD will make it permanent unless something is done about it.

This brings me to the solution I propose.
I agree with Sara's point but what I suggest is after two weeks this thread should be edited or deleted to protect MPLab's "gift".

After two weeks I will return and remove the link. That's a fair compromise.

Dave

Might I suggest something different? If FIRST is really serious about keeping this related to FIRST only, and they are going to be responsible for keeping the link at their website for 2 weeks, I think it is better if this thread is directing people to the right location in the FIRST site. That way when FIRST take the link off their website, the link posted here won't work anymore.

This will shift the responsibility of you having to delete your message after two weeks back to FIRST, and they have total control of how long this link will be posted publically.

Some people have written their own 'Dashboard' programs to monitor their bot. That is one use that would be kind of cool.

The usfirst.com link is only to download the new compiler. Don't forget to download Microchips v7.00 IDE also. This can be done @ http://www.microchip.com/stellent/id...&part=SW007002

Scroll all the way down the page and click on "full install". The 2005 default project must run under v7.00 IDE.

Re: Exclusive IDE Download Link

I think the issue is overblown. There aren't a whole lot of people who need a C compiler for PIC18 chips. Those who would use this software for something other than FIRST probably already have it. I understand what Dave requested in the kickoff video, but making sure that people know where to get this software seems more important than trying to hide it from a few outsiders, who would be able to track it down by us saying "It's on the FIRST website" anyway.

for the people who wrote their own dashboard programs, they probably have their own copies of visual studio. I mean, the software is very expensive, so why distribute it to everyone. also, why did they send two versions of it out? I haven't installed it yet. is it the full version with managed c++, c#, (of course the ability to open c files and billions of other files), java, visual basic, and etc.?

We, in another thread, spent nearly two hours deliberating over whether or not to post tihs link. Ultimately we decided if you wanted to remind teams about the compiler to send them to the FIRST website ONLY

Re: Exclusive IDE Download Link

Something doesn't seem right to me. You've been asked by a moderator to not share the exact link to download the software from microchip, and yet you then post a completely non password protected link to your own server.

Personally, if anything, I think the microchip link is better then the link to your own server.

Phil's link is okay.
The MPLAB IDE software has always been available to the public and that particular link was obtained from the Microchip website. It is not the restricted C compiler.

I started by downloading the compiler and installing that, then I realised that I needed the IDE so then I got that too. I installed them in that order. Then I downloaded the update to the compiler, but whenever I try to install it, it says there is not an installation of the compiler in the directory I selected. There is an installation of it there, so I havent the faintest clue why it thinks there isnt. Has anyone else had this problem?

Check your versions. The full install is for compiler version 2.40 and the update is for compiler version 2.30. You can take an older one up to 2.30, or just install the whole 2.40.

Re: Exclusive IDE Download Link

Here is what I did.

I uninstalled version 6.30 MPIDE from last year.
I installed MPIDE 7.00 (full install)
I installed new complier (2.40)
During the complier upate I chose:
ADD MPLAB IDE C18 to PATH Varible
UPDATE MPLAB IDE to use this MPLAB c18
UPDATE MBLAB IDE to use this MPLAB Linker

I copied the default code into:
C:/FrcCode
(working from root, old habit, windows long files kills projects sometimes)

I opened MPIDE 7.0
Opened workspace to FrcCode
I edited the the project files:
PROJECT > BUILD OPTIONS... > PROJECT
I added a path to the includes:
C:\mcc18\h
which contains an include #include <adc.h>

Then I hit the debugger...bam...it's running in sim mode...

Hope that helps..

PS: I still don't know what I am doing, yet...but atleast I am trying...

I think if you install the compiler first, then the MPLab 7.0 it will pickup the locations of the compiler and libraries. I didn't have to point MPLab at anything before running it. I did uninstall ALL the previous components (IFI Loader, MPLab and Compiler).

DON'T GET THE MCC30 COMPILER!

Any code you compile with it will be made for another processor (Probably PIC30s). We're using a PIC18, so use the MCC18 compiler.

I am completely confused by everything that has been said. As far as I can see the link on FIRST's website is down. However, the mirror that someone posted seems to work. What exactly do we need to download from there. Do we need Sales.zip, and if so what's the password (it's not mpseven). And do we need to download both First_C18_v240.zip and the MPLAB-C18-upgrade-v2.30-win32.exe or just one of them. Do we need anything in the Japan directory? (I don't think so but I'm not absolutely sure.)

I recognize that it may occasionally be difficult to get through to the Microchip web site to download the new compiler, due to the traffic that they are getting. However, it is important that everyone understand that there are two - AND ONLY TWO - legal ways to get the compiler. You can be patient and try again to download from their web site during the two week period that they will host that option. Or you can wait until after that and request a copy on CD through IFI.

Please folks, let's try and show that we are deserving of what we have been given here, and let's not screw this up. Thanks, Dave, for understanding. The links was edited so quickly because we don't want the Chief Delphi Forum and FIRST getting into any trouble. The decision was to remove the links immediately so FIRST can continue a good relationship with Microchip. It would be a shame to see FIRST or team 47 get into any trouble because of a simple misunderstanding on the allowable distribution method of the new compiler.
