Has CD ever given any thought to establishing a (probably IRC driven) ChiefDelphi chatroom?

There is an IRC chat room powered by tigerbolt. Its link is listed on the portal.

CD used to have a chatroom before the upgrade of software; however, it was rarely used. Thus it probably wasn't practical for it to be implemented again.

An informal AIM chat is run many nights as well, though I'm not sure how that will work during the buildseason.

How about this, if people think it is beneficial to host AIM chats to discuss the game and other FIRST issues, we can start a thread in General, and the person who want to host the chat of the day can post in there asking people to IM him/her to join the chatroom.

We can make the thread sticky, and whoever post there before anyone else during the day (say, starting at noon) can host the chat. The chat will last until noon of next day, then people can post again after noon. You can also organize different chat room with different topics and so on.

Comments/suggestions?

that would be great i used to just get people from my buddy list and invite them in to a FIRST chat at random times.

Yes, a very informal chat is held almost every night (between 8PM-1AM), it is basically a group of firsters that talk about random issues or about FIRST, IM me @ Radar777777 for more infromation.

Though beyond that, I think that someone could post a chat name that could be used all of the time and people could invite themselves.

The IRC channel is the old school chat. I'll be in there once I get back to school.

I am a regular member of the FIRST night chats. we will have them every night from 8 p.m. till 11 p.m during build season (just like ted pointed out before). feel free to join us. we will name the chat room "FIRST build season" . if you dont know anyone who are in those chats every night, feel free to invite yourself in and introduce yourself. Hmmm...

I like it, and I might join in on some of those AIM chats (bosoxboy5256), but it would be easy if we could have a CD for chat--somewhere standard, where we all knew it would be regularly. I'm sure Brandon could do it--I don't know if the server could handle it. It would be awesome if this could be figured out.

FIRST chats are a great way to meet new FIRSTers, share ideas, and to have fun. Just IM one of us and we will get you in or invite yourself to "FIRST build season" on AIM.

Edit: WOW... there were alot of people in the chat tonight. I hope this keeps up and improves!

Once again, SEARCH BEFORE YOU POST. If you have a question(especially if its about Chiefdelphi.com or past games/robots etc), most likely its already asked, you just have to search to find an answer. ChiefDelphi has had its own chat in the past, if you search around a little bit you will find a lot more information.

Just to let you know, our team also has a IRC chat server setup with an online client available.

We used to have one; it's gone now due to lack of use and inability to monitor/moderate it properly. Since then, we've been directing people over to Tigerbolt. They have a web-based client, as well as the ability to log on via mIRC or any other IRC client.

Ken, I don't think we need another sticky thread. If anything, it should go in chit-chat. At any rate, Tigerbolt works just fine.

While I think that a CD IRC thread would be the best, I think this would be a good substitute.

To those who posted about alternative chats--

My webserver, too, has chat capabilities. But I do not pretend that www.theforceteam.com has the same following as CD, nor do I think that any other team site does.

Brandon--perhaps you could link to the Tigerbolt chat from the top of the forum, so it was obvious that it was the "CD sanctioned" chat? That would serve much the same purpose.

There are ups and downs with the tigerbolt chat room, but if people are willing to use that as the main chatroom, that's fine.

My thoughts is that even with the tigerbolt chat room being the focus of the chats, i feel it is still important for there to have some sort of announcements telling people something like "between XXXXpm to XXXXpm we are having an official chat about the new game". In other words, some sort of focus in the chat when people know when to show up, and what to talk about. The other problem is there is not a lot of room for multiple discussion in a single chat room.

What I was hopping to see is people who have a specific topic in mind can easily organize a chat for it and invite the rest of the FIRST community to join in. That person will be able to keep the focus on the topic, and have some fun with it. There can be different chatroom happening at the same time so you don't get as much noise in a single one.

Though that's just my thoughts. If people think the tigerbolt chatroom is the place to go to, than that's fine.

*edit* I just saw wetzel's comment about the sticky belonging to chit-chat, and I agree with that. If people are making any sort of chat announcement they should do it in there. *edit*

Due to so much lag in the "FIRST build season" chat room, we will be making a new room named "FIRST robotics" starting on the 17th. thanks.

Roland, like i have pointed out before in the chats, this chat has been going on for months and seem to be if we use one name for a while it lags a lot and once we change it, it starts acting fine. dont ask me why, because i have NO clue. :)

Okay, done. I just need some input from you people of when would be a good time to set the "between XXXXpm to XXXXpm we are having an official chat about the new game" chat. We communicate this with Brandon, he helps spread the word, and we have a semi-stable chat atmosphere.

I was wondering if we could get something like a PJIRC install on here that is pointed to the #firstrobotics IRC channel. And we would need a link up in the orange bar and an announcement about the new feature on the portal page. I think if those things happened, we'd get a lot more people chatting. I'm thinking a lot of people just don't know about #firstrobotics. Anyone agree?

There's a pretty big liability, since the client could be used to access non FIRST stuff, and you're relaying it through Delphi's website, I'm not sure how the higher ups would feel about that. I know the Clarkson University IT staff have blocked out IRC entirely in favor of campus security and legal reasons.

Why an IRC chat? I have been to other webpages where there is a built in chat right on the webpage where all members of the forum on that page could post to the chat. It was very useful and worked very well since there were always 3+ knowledgeable members on. Let me see if I can find the webpage.

For those of us with Firefox, how about Yakalike with a semi-normal start time? If you want to chat get onto CD around 8 o'clock and sign into Yakalike. You don't even need to stay on CD to keep chatting to your fellow FIRSTers. They have a little check box so that you can surf the web while remaining in the CD chat. Pretty simple, only problem being you have to have Firefox if you want to chat.

RCU hosts a chat in TappedIn.com, an educational website which is secure. We "meet" every other Tuesday evening - Pat Chen of SPAM got us set up, so maybe she could do the same for a general CD chat.

Actually, PJIRC is configurable enough that one can't necessarily join an arbitrary channel or server. As described in the list of options, you could use these options to limit it to a single channel:
Of course, using these exact options may qualify as fascist, but that's a whole different disccussion.

It is also configurable enough to allow you to match the colors, as demonstrated by my installation.
