Music - Punk
First off, I've done a search, and no topics seemed to shine directly upon Punk music itself.
Okay so who likes Punk? Favorite bands? To name 5, Minor Threat, NoFX, Rise Against, Anti-Flag, and Pennywise. Discuss. :) |

Re: Music - Punk
Yeah like I said, I was only naming 5. I like most of the other bands you mentioned too.
How 'bout everyone list your top 10 favorite punk bands of all time. (New school, old school, pop-punk, <insert genre>-punk, anything.) |
Re: Music - Punk
Check out 20 Years of Dischord. It is an AMAZING box set. Dischord is a local label in DC and has been recording stuff from short lived (and longer lived) bands for a long time.
*edit* The B&N page dosn't list the full track listing. The full track listing can be found here. Wetzel |
Re: Music - Punk
Ho-lee crap. I need to get that. What an awesome track listing! It has one more than one of my all time favorite bands! Thanks for the info man.

Re: Music - Punk
Tsunami Bomb is my #1 favorite band, I'll be seeing them next Friday with Flogging Molly, and yes, I will be missing one night of the build. *tear*
I also like Rise Against, Bad Religion, Green Day, among others. EDIT: How could I have forgotten them, Social Distortion is awesome too. |
Re: Music - Punk
Lol, I'm gonna try and catch Flogging Molly when they come up to Boston, the night before our regional starts, I haven't seen them live in almost 3 years!!...and Social D is playing the day after we ship our bot....soooo just add another late night up to the tally I guess.
I'll toss out a few punk bands I listen to: Social Distortion, Stiff Little Fingers, One Man Army, Rancid, The Bouncing Souls, The Swinging Utters, The Pinkerton Thugs, Kicked in the Head I also listen to a lot of ska and irish too. :) |
Re: Music - Punk
Lot's of good bands mentioned. I love the reference to The Pinkerton Thugs, I haven't heard anything from them in a while. Social D rocks! DropKick Murphys is my favorite Irish sounding band. I got the new Flogging Molly CD not that long ago, and I liked the other two better, but it's still good.
I've been listening to Authority Zero, and NoFX - Pump up the Valuum, a lot lately. |

(Bad Religion is really good, too. ;)) and Tsunami Bomb!? Yer so freakin' lucky! Guttermouth, Bikini Kill, Bodyjar, Pretty Girls Make Graves are my favs. I guess I'm more of an indie/lo-fi kinda guy |
Re: Music - Punk
Yay! Heavy Metal! And local Kansas punk band KTP!
|
Re: Music - Punk
I'm not totally Punk IMHO, well, I mean I wear polo shirts for crying out loud, but I listen to Bad Religion, The Matches, Green Day, etc. Of course, what really defines punk music? Is it rebellion, is it energy, what is it? If could throw a few more bands into there, but I won't.

Re: Music - Punk
Punk music has changed so much over time... I like many of the newer bands but I also know my roots. I love The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, and The Dead Kennedys to name a few. I enjoy many of the bands previously mentioned and here are a few more to add: The Used, They Might Be Giants, Unwritten Law, and though many people don't think of them as punk R.E.M. If you decide to go searching for new music you should check out http://www.punkrock.org/ it is at least a reference point. I don't particularly care for the new pop-"punk" brigade that seems to keep growing mainly due to the fact that these bands aren't writing music in the spirit to which punk music was born.
Joseph, generally speaking punk music is an intelligent, and very politically driven form of music first popularized in the UK aimed at the monarchy there. It was adoptedby anarchists, thus being branded as an "outcast" form of music. If you want more info feel free to ask, but I will end the history lesson with that. |

Re: Music - Punk
I like some of the older stuff - Bad Religion, Pennywise, The Clash, The Ramones, etc.
I hate all the newer stuff though. :( |
Re: Music - Punk
So this is that punk thread Jon was telling me about. . .
Yeah, I like punk too...the music (guitar rythems, bass, drums) is awesome, it sounds great. My top few are probably...NoFX, The Offspring, Pennywise, Rise Against, Strung Out, Greenday, and Millencolin. Ska is great too..Mad Caddies, Catch 22, Mustard Plug, and of course...Sublime! |
Re: Music - Punk
Yeah, but punk was also influenced by American bands such AS: The Velvet Underground, which spawned from the Fugs. New York Dolls were probably one of the very first punk bands. They came about around the same time as The Ramones, and well we all know that The Romones by todays standards are 'pop-punk'. But who cares about standards, punk isn't really about rules or labels.
As for the Sex Pistols, you can't call them sell outs because they're knd of like N'Sync, created to be the next big thing. And they were. I still like their music, cause it sounded awesome, but yes, they were fake. (So in other words this whole thing I'm saying is.... Punk really came from the US.. not so much the UK).. That's all debatable though. Old school Bands that rock that you should listen to if you want to become educated in Punk: Minor Threat, The Varukers, Rudimentary Peni, Social D, DK Influencial Pop-Punk bands that rock, (Not like Simple Plan/ Good Charlotte): The Descendents, The Ramones, The Buzzcocks Other bands that start with THE Thank You, -Me |
Re: Music - Punk
Although my musical tastes cant be piegeon holded into one specific style. I must say that i love the rawkus punk music.

Re: Music - Punk
Oh what a year can make. I'm not much more into the punk scene due to events my Senior year of leaving home, abandonment of what you belived in, and corrupt power. By far punk is my favorite genre right now, followed by hard rock. Nowhere in sight is rap or country, which I despise with a passion.

Re: Music - Punk
Indeed, I've discovered much better punk music since this thread was first started forever-ago. I still love a lot of my old favorite bands, don't get me wrong, I just know a lot more about it now. My favorite punk bands right now (limiting myself to five) are Propagandhi, Good Riddance, Strike Anywhere, None More Black (Kid Dynamite too), and I still love Anti-Flag.
My favorite oldschool bands are 7Seconds, Social D, Aus Rotten, Descendents, and Minor Threat. The thing I'm big into right now is ska though. I'm really loving Reel Big Fish and Streetlight Manifesto. I haven't picked many more "favorite" ska bands cause I'm kinda new to it. I just started a Ska/Punk/Grunge type band with some friends that should be really fun. All of the above being said: I'm not very fond of the 'punk scene' A lot of people are starting to piss me off, I'm really hating the purists, and elitists. That being said, I really hate Hot Topic and everything it stands for. Let's not let this thread die. <3 More punk, ska, emo, hardcore (80's hardcore punk style too) conversations here. ^_^ |
