Can you keep up with the forum?

Looking at the amount of new posts/threads everyday, I am wondering how well people are keeping up with all the new messages. So, here is a simple poll everyone can participate in:

On a scale of 1 to 5, how well are you keeping up with the pace of the forum?

Cast your votes now!

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

Very well, this forum is extremely slow compared to the only other forum I post in (Something Awful)

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

It's pretty bad right now as posts are coming in at breakneck speed (as is expected in the build season) due the combination of Adrenalin, confusion, nervousness and curiosity.
I wouldn't want it any other way.

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

I can keep up with most of the forum posts in the off seasons...

As far as during the 6 week build period, I only read or browse threads that are interesting or important.

I am too busy between, class, homework, meetings, work, and sleep to read everything, however, I do check the forums many times a day.

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

It is moving quite fast. I'm keeping up with pretty much everything except camera and programming.

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

I have trouble keeping up with my favorite threads sometimes, and when a thread gets too long I may abandon it because I just can't follow all those posts and subject changes.

However, like others have said, I enjoy the high impact variety of threads that come in build season. I like to see what everyone in FIRST is thinking, and seeing them all in one place is a great way to do that. I pick and choose from the portal and other subforums.

I was doing pretty good until the kick-off and then like 10,000 people posted within a 2-hour timeframe :ahh:

I am behind, as I will probably come across this thread and read it sometime next week. :)

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

Actually, this forum is fairly slow paced, I like it.

You obviously can't read everything, but just check out the threads you're interested in and keep away from the chit-chat forums and you're set. Pick and choose, pick and choose.

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

I can keep up pretty well, just like most other people here. I usually find the posts that interest me, or I have some knowledge on. Most of my time on these forums was spent during a class where the teacher couldn't keep up with the speed myself and some other people were doing the programming, so he let us surf until the rest of the class caught up.

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

I keep up with the topics I'm personally involved with, but I don't even try to read everything. I skim the titles in the portal a few times a day to see what sparks my interest.

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

I keep up with them pretty well. I skim titles that come up on the portal page. If I see a title that catches my interest or something I think I can help with, I'll open the thread and see what's going on. If not, the thread slips by.

Billfred 14-01-2005 19:08

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

I skim the new posts page, skipping things that hold no interest to me (such as many game threads and obvious questions that have four replies).

It's more than I'm used to, but I'm adapting.

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

I'm not doing very well, so I just look at random threads that catch my eye.

It's not a good system, but it works well enough for me. :)

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

I've been unable to keep up. After working 10 hours a day and then going to our teams meetings (which I miss the first half of because of work) I only have an hour or so a day to browse these forums. With so many new posts and threads (some of which are several pages long) there's no way I could read all of them. I have that feeling that I dropped the ChiefDelphi ball! :p It's bad when someone at our team's meeting asks me about a thread on here and I have no clue whay they're talking about. Since they know about how much time I normally spend on here they figure I'd know what they're talking about.

Oh well, that's what the weekends for, I have a bit of "catching up" to do. But then again, I'm also working tommorrow!

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

I keep up with some of the new posts/ threads; the ones that look interesting at least. The only thing I really like doing on CD during build season (when I'm not competing) is look at new pictures of people's ideas, prototypes and robots.

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

This is the only forum i use, besides our new team forum, and it seems really fast to me. sometimes threads get too big too fast though. but i guess its ok :D

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

Looking at the poll results, seems like most people could barely keep up (2) with the pace of the forum, while some can keep up ok (3).

Seems like as long as people can keep up with the discussions they are involved in, then they are happy.

I can only imagine there will be more and more traffic as the website grow every year. But so far, we've gotten through the bottleneck period immediately after kickoff. Good job everyone!

Seeing that I just saw this thread I guess that I am not doing as well as I thought. It is hard to read everthing but I try.

I think I would do better if that Ken guy stopped creating new polls!

This is a great thread.

No, I can't keep up. In fact, I just noticed this thread today (three days after it was started). I used to post here a lot, but there are so many posts now that I can hardly find the time to read them and respond.

Arefin Bari 17-01-2005 15:15

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

The forum isnt moving that fast or that slow. I think if we all could make the thread title a bit more specific, it would help all of us (for example, there are bunch of threads right now which title relates to "2005 arm design")

I think that it is fine to keep up with. You just have to know where to look...

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

I read the portal titles and skip anything where I know my input is of no use, then scavenge through the rest.

And wow, look at that nice bell curve. sexy-kinda..

Unfortunately, I have not been able to keep up with the numerous postings so I have been selective on the topics that are most important to me.
The new feature on the "Recent Activity" window that shows the sub-topics help a lot. (Thanks Brandon)

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

For me personally, I had to config my portal page to display the 100 most recent posts. Otherwise the new threads flood the entire portal page and I can't tell where I left off the last time.

Ever since the dramatic increase of posts since kickoff, I was only able to read 1 in 10 threads... Most of the other threads I only read the thread title and move on. Good thing I don't have a robot to build, or I would've be stressed out/falling asleep by now ;-).

Re: Can you keep up with the forum?

I honestly can't. During build season I'm hardly on here, so it's quite difficult for me to keep up. I'm trying to reply to threads I can help with, and the ones that're more important to the forum (rather than the "Game: Person Above Me" and "Word Association" threads). It's difficult because whenever I get on to help someone with any questions, the threads already have like 5-10 posts in it. *shrug*

I do an ok job keeping up with the forums....it's all the stuff that I could do instead that I don't do a good job keeping up with. ;)

You can configure the portal page like that? :ahh:

I was doing just fine, until I moved back to school and my computer decided to stop booting. :( Driver errors with my improperly installed video card.

Sure. http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=32604
You must've missed it.

Although, when it takes 3-4 hours to fill up the 100 threads in the portal page, that's kinda scary. These are 100 most recently replied/started threads, not the newest 100 messages. So, if things go crazy, there must be 200-300 new post every 3-4 hour, almost as much as 100 new post per hour. That's kinda nuts. I don't think the forum is as effective as earlier days if that number keep going up.
