Snow Storm

With a major snow storm hitting the Midwest, and the Northeast, how is your team coping with the weather?

Are you doing anything special?

I don't think we had much of a choice because our school cancelled all after school activities on friday. They also cancelled all extracurriculurs at our school during the weekend.

GO 1403!!!

We had a meeting today that ended early due to the snow coming down way too fast. They are saying up 10-18 inches of snow here in the suburbs of philly.

The snow will take care of the rest of today, tomorrow, and maybe monday. The city is never prepared to plow the snow away. Plus, the EAGLES game is tomorrow, so all the snow plow drivers will be watching the game instead of plowing the roads.

So to answer your question, it will slow us down a bit, but we'll just have to make up the time later - unfortunetly there is nothing we can do about it.

Jason, currently snowed in

Is considering canceling our meeting anything special?

It's not hit 10 degrees yet today. We're looking at 10-20 inches of snow, and wind chill of -13 tomorrow.

And we're in southern NH.

I may need to go skiing.

northeast indiana never gets mass amounts of snow. For instance, the December snow storm that hit Inianapolis and Chicago but not in between (which is where we are). Even though we got maybe a few inches (2 or 3) our rookie team from across town did cancel their meeting. We, on the other hand, are working.

Yea, we could have done so much more work if we didn't get all this crazy snow. And we don't even get to miss any school because it will all be plowed by Monday! Is there no justice?!

In NYC, everything was canceled this morning because the schools won't be open.
Our Manhattan FLL Tournament and the Sunday Long Island FLL Tournament was canceled.

It started pretty early here this morning, before 10 I think. We started to get "booted out" of the shop around 2 or so. A few went down to our playing field building at the other end of town, before heading home. I quickly decided against it when I had to put the Jeep in 4wd to get up a street in town. Oh well, ride out the storm, stay safe everyone. :]

Today the Delaware FIRST Lego league tournament had to be shortened to about 12:30 instead of ending at 4 or 5 like it was going to. the schedule got messed "buggerd" up a bit according to one adult. The day was cut short because about 5-10 teams didn't show because of fear of snow and it started to come down at about 9am ish and hasn't stopped yet. also I'm sure the MOE meeting tomorrow will be delayed or canceled. but i hope not. This reminds me of a story I heard from a friend. She was working for TRW at the time and they were working on a project proposal for the military. They were located in LA and right before the proposal was due, the LA riots broke out. Now TRW had a policy of never asking for an extension on a project proposal so they made sure it got done even with the riots ongoing. The interesting thing was that everyone else who was bidding for this project asked for an extension because of the LA riots. Except none of them were located in LA...

On Thursday a decision was made to postpone the Maryland FLL State Championship from today until next Sat. It's a lot of work to reschedule these events, but we have a great team here in Maryland led by a tireless FLL partner, Mark Heil.

It's too early in the season to even talk about extensions and I wouldn't hold my breath. There was a couple day extension granted in 2003, but many of the teams it was suppose to benefit, still couldn't get out to work on their robots. What a mess that was. That blizzard happened the last week of the build season.
Every team has it's own set of challenges. For some, it's the weather.

10 degrees? That's a heat wave up here in the North Country of New York, as we have not seen over 0 for a few days now. Often it is said that we don't get a lot of snow because it is too cold to snow. Ever try to start at car when its -25? (Thats not the wind chill.) Maybe a good selling point when asking a school to start a team: FIRST students don't want snow days, they want to continue school so they can work on their robot.

Anyways...update: now there is easily over 12" of snow and it is still falling. Special things that I did: found out that with the current amount of tread on my tires and many other factors, my car will not reach any speed over 5 mph in the snow, if I press the gas, the tires just start spinning, so I did have a little fun in the parking lot with that. Me and some friends went to Walmart and got a snow tube and rope and snow-tubed behind a minivan. Lots of fun stuff, I love it...and as for tomorrow, I'll be on the slopes all day snowboarding!

Our team isn't meeting this weekend so it's not affecting us. If they close school on Monday then we'll lose a day since our stuff will be locked up until Tuesday.

I don't have an exact amount of snowfall where I am right now. My house is on top of a mountain and it's very windy right now so the snow is blowing around and drifting. One area of my driveway is still bare pavement while the area behind the house is covered with a big drift. Kinda funny to see, my Toyota is clean while my Chevy, which is nosed in behind the house, is buried.

We got a few inches of snow here in Montreal today, I suppose it's from the same storm you're going through down there. The drive home was a bit slippery, since they haven't gotten around to dumping some of the hundred-thousand or so metric tonnes of salt they spread in this city every year. It's been a bit too chilly here to snow the past few days, with temperatures somewhere in the minus 30s. However, us being Canadian, it doesn't affect our team at all. In fact, in my five years of high school, and despite feet of snow and lots of freezing rain, I've never had a single snow day... except for that time when that toilet blew up... but that's another story.

VINEYARD HAVEN... WALTHAM... WARWICK... WEYMOUTH... WOONSOCKET AND WORCESTER 846 AM EST SUN JAN 23 2005

... BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EST THIS EVENING...

AN EXTREME SITUATION IS OCCURRING IN EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS. FOUR INCHES OF SNOW WAS REPORTED IN 25 MINUTES AT CHELMSFORD MASSACHUSETTS SHORTLY AFTER 7 AM AS THE LAST EXCESSIVE BAND OF POWDERY SNOW SWINGS SOUTHEASTWARD.

THE NORTH SHORE IS BEING BLITZED BY SNOWFALL RATES OF ALMOST 4 INCHES PER HOUR. IT MAY LAST ONLY ANOTHER HOUR OR TWO BUT ITS A COMPLETE SHORT TERM PARALYSER.

IT IS SPREADING EAST SOUTHEAST AT 15 MPH INTO BOSTON NOW AND WILL CONTINUE THERE THROUGH AT LEAST 11 AM. THIS BIG SNOW BAND WILL ARRIVE ON THE SOUTH SHORE BETWEEN 10 AM AND 11 AM AND THEN CROSS THE UPPER CAPE BETWEEN 11 AM AND 2 PM. IT TENDS TO LAST ABOUT 2 HOURS. THAT MEANS 8 INCHES OF SNOW MAY FALL IN PORTIONS OF THE BOSTON AREA IN A 2 HOUR PERIOD DURING MID AND LATE MORNING.

FINAL BLIZZARD TOTALS FOR MOST OF EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS WILL RANGE BETWEEN 28 AND 38 INCHES SETTING A NEW SINGLE STORM RECORD FOR BOSTON... SURPASSING THE AMOUNT FROM THE GREAT BLIZZARD OF 78 AND THE PRESIDENTS DAY STORM OF 2003.

ISOLATED TOTALS OF 40 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE. VULNERABLE LOCATIONS FOR NEARLY 40 INCH STORM TOTALS ARE ESSEX... MIDDLESEX... PLYMOUTH... NORFOLK AND BARNSTABLE COUNTIES IN MASSACHUSETTS.

EVEN IF THIS STORM COMES UP SLIGHTLY SHORT OF RECORD... IT IS A DANGEROUS STORM WITH THE WORST OCCURRING NOW INTO EARLY THIS AFTERNOON AS WINDS STRENGTHEN AND TEMPERATURES FALL TO NEAR 10 ABOVE.

NANTUCKET MAY END UP WITH ONLY 12 TO 22 INCHES... BUT BLIZZARD CONDITIONS WILL DESCEND ON THAT ISLAND LATER THIS MORNING OR THIS AFTERNOON.

NORTHERLY WINDS WILL BE GUSTING AROUND 75 MPH ON BARNSTABLE AND NANTUCKET COUNTIES. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS LIFE THREATENING STORM BECAUSE OF SEVERE BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF THE NEWLY FALLEN SNOW AND TUMBLING TEMPERATURES.

SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES HAVE OCCURRED THIS MORNING AS WINDS ALL ALONG THE COAST GUST BETWEEN 55 AND 65 MPH ON BOSTONS NORTH AND SOUTH SHORES AND EVEN ON NARRAGANSETT BAY. A 78 MPH WIND GUST WAS REPORTED IN EAST FALMOUTH BY A SPOTTER.

THERE HAS BEEN ISOLATED DAMAGE REPORTED TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE.

POWER OUTAGES MAY BECOME WIDESPREAD THIS AFTERNOON ON THE CAPE AND NANTUCKET WHEN THE BRUNT OF WIND HITS THERE... BETWEEN 75 AND 80 MPH.

DRIFTS OF AT LEAST 6 FEET ARE OCCURRING.

OVER CAPE COD... NANTUCKET AND MARTHAS VINEYARD... THE SNOW HAS BEEN OF A WETTER CONSISTENCY EARLY TODAY AND THERE HAS BEEN SOME RAIN ON NANTUCKET. THIS RAISES THE ANTE FOR POWER OUTAGES IN EXTREME SOUTHEAST NEW ENGLAND WITH THE SNOW CLINGING TO WIRES AND BRANCHES.

ALL THE HEAVY SNOW WILL TAPER TO SNOW SHOWERS LATER THIS AFTERNOON OR EVENING... BUT CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING WILL PERSIST INTO LATE THIS EVENING ACROSS EXPOSED AREAS.

THERE IS A CHANCE OF BLIZZARD CONDITIONS CONTINUING ON PARTS OF CAPE COD INTO EARLY TONIGHT AS HEAVY SNOW SQUALLS POUND PARTS OF THE CAPE. A BLIZZARD WARNING IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OR FREQUENT GUSTS OF OVER 35 MPH ARE EXPECTED WITH CONSIDERABLE FALLING AND/OR BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW. WHITEOUT CONDITIONS OCCUR AT TIMES. THOSE VENTURING OUTDOORS MAY BECOME LOST OR DISORIENTED... SO PERSONS IN THE WARNING AREA ARE ADVISED TO STAY INDOORS.

Re: Snow Storm

Here in eastern Kansas we don't have as much problems with snow as we do with ice. Usually we'll be at a meeting in the evening and everyone will start looking up the weather on the internet. If it says it is getting icy, we will be allowed to leave early if we want. Otherwise we just drive slow.

that weather channel report was the real deal...

RI earlier today was put into a "State of Emergency" as all of the state is covered in at least 20" of snow... we got about 2ft here in Newport, and thankfully its just high winds at the moment... the thing with the winds is some spots have 3in of snow... and in drifts its upwards of 4 feet!!! well the main good thing about this is no school tommorow has already been declared...

Only thing we have to worry about is hurricanes and that is during the off season. We all were saying how we were hating Florida during the hurricanes, well now this is when we are rejoicing becasue we are in Florida
Yeah but I would take a snowstorm over a hurricane anyday just because I know everything is still going to be intact.

O I am sick to death
of all this snow
the falling temperatures
and all it's woes
I truly feel just like an Eskimo
but spring, it's true
that it is overdue
and so I button up my jacket
and I face the season's chill
but of this awful weather
I have truly had my fill
I truly love beauty
of a simple daffodil
I wish that spring would come today

Well, as was said, our Rhode Island state of emergency is putting a damper on things.

No one has school tomorrow apparently, and I cancelled our meeting because people drive up to an hour to get to Brown where we work... we come from all over.

On Saturday we started a meeting, and then left early... my mom continued to yell at me about what takes precidence: safe driving or robotics, needless to say I couldn't quite answer....

I've never seen his much snow ever!!!! I miss summer.

The snow storm is gone the roads are clear , and there is no school on Monday?I hope they have a good reason or at least a reason at all. No school means no meeting :( :( and time just keeps ticking away as that deadline gets closer and closer

We kind of know what you're being through, not being able to work, cause our kits arrived here only last Friday due to customs bureaucracy, but on the other hand that wasn't that bad because we used this time to think about the strategy and design of the robot.

I wouldn't when it snows it stays for day's, maybe weeks. When a Hurricane roles through its only here for a couple of hours. The building codes of Florida after hurricane Andrew are ridiculous anyway that most newer houses and remodels and so forth stay intact. Our biggest thing is power, like you guys are dealing with power outages.

And plus look how long Florida went without getting a direct hit from a hurricane
Andrew 1992
4 hurricanes 2004
12 years

You guys deal with snow every year

During our breakfast club on the 22nd of January, we had a major snow storm that day.. Few of the team members did not show up to the meeting, but some team members, coaches and engineers have managed to show up. I guess sometimes we just work through even some of the harsh weathers. :yikes:

The snow came back today. In under an hour we have already accumulated about 2". That is on top of the 12" we got on Saturday!

What power outages????? The only power outages I can think of are the people close to the shore in Massachusetts which ironically had hurricane force winds.

Opps I read your location and it said you are in California. I didn't realize it was California Maryland. Personally I think it's a smart thing to do. Here in Boston the roads have only now become clean enough where you are not risking life and limb driving.

I was soo mad today, all the other schools and school distrects in the upper to mid part of Delaware and parts of MD, PA and NJ were all closed expect for mine. I dont think that was fair to the kids who had to stand outside in the -3 degree weather. I am happy I didnt go today :)

Last week, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan got *tons* (read: 3-4 feet) of snow and the windchill was in the -40s ... Michigan Tech was the only school in the UP that was open, one of the days! :yikes:
