Snow Storm
With a major snow storm hitting the Midwest, and the Northeast, how is your team coping with the weather?
Are you doing anything special? |

The snow will take care of the rest of today, tomorrow, and maybe monday. The city is never prepared to plow the snow away. Plus, the EAGLES game is tomorrow, so all the snow plow drivers will be watching the game instead of plowing the roads. So to answer your question, it will slow us down a bit, but we'll just have to make up the time later - unfortunetly there is nothing we can do about it. Jason, currently snowed in |

It's not hit 10 degrees yet today. We're looking at 10-20 inches of snow, and wind chill of -13 tomorrow. And we're in southern NH. I may need to go skiing. --Petey |
Re: Snow Storm
We got 12 inches or so in the past 12 hours so we cancled todays meeting and moved it to tomorrow. YAY living in southeast michigan :D
|
Re: Snow Storm
We ended our meeting early today (5 hours early) and it still has not begun to snow. That and we have no meeting tomorrow.
|
Re: Snow Storm
Can you say snowshoing? We're snowed in here at the shop in Southeastern Mighigan. We'll find a way out sooner or later.
|
Re: Snow Storm
northeast indiana never gets mass amounts of snow. For instance, the December snow storm that hit Inianapolis and Chicago but not in between (which is where we are). Even though we got maybe a few inches (2 or 3) our rookie team from across town did cancel their meeting. We, on the other hand, are working.

Re: Snow Storm
Up here in North Central PA, we have gotten 6+" of snow already and it is still falling pretty hard. No team meeting for me to go to, but there is enough snow to keep me from going snowboarding :ahh: (my car can't make it to the mountain).
|
Re: Snow Storm
Over here in Ann Arbor, he have gotten too much snow too quickly. So, we postponed our 7 hour meeting from today and moved it to tomorrow.
|
Re: Snow Storm
My team is doing nothing special...
We live on long island, so the snow storm hit us but its not enough to stop us. Robotics must go on. |
Re: Snow Storm
The school system canceled all extra curricular activities for this weekend. That includes the robotics team. :( :( :(
|
Re: Snow Storm
If I remember correctly in 2003 the ship date was extended because of a large snow storm, but I am not completely sure about this so some one please correct me if I am wrong.
|
Re: Snow Storm
we sent the practice bot and sensor stuff home with Bharat. They have a programming party going all weekend long.
WC  |
Re: Snow Storm
I think they added on 2 or so days to certain teams that were nailed by the snow.. down in VA, we havent had school Thurs or Fri, but the 'skeleton' crew got together both days, but weve been forbidden to get together this weekend.. but even if were out monday, robotics must go on.. wether the school supports it or not!
j p.s- those not fimiliar with Richmond snow- 1in of snow knock school out for 2+ days :-D ...now the more richmondish winter weather is here- freezing rain and sleet.. |
Re: Snow Storm
We had to cancel this morning because of the insane snowfall. This is not a good thing for a rookie team who's going to be pushing it to finish a robot in time anyways... Ahhh!!! Snow, snow go away, come back after build season, ea?
|
Re: Snow Storm
We have like a foot and a half in some places and we are still meeting lol
go michigan |
Re: Snow Storm
nya... we're so behind right now, we don't even have our ideas on paper... we needed today, but West Ottawa cancelled everything, I mean we are practically snowed in. *cries* We'll never get our robot done if this snow keeps bombarding us like it is...
|
Re: Snow Storm
We had our meeting today but around 9 o'clock or so they told us to start calling home for a ride but we could leave when we wanted too. But by the time I left the roads where really bad. I hope that the weather gets better so that everyone can have the robot built completely in time to ship.
|
Re: Snow Storm
What is this 'snow' you speak of? I live in Arizona!

Re: Snow Storm
Here in Canada EH. WE be watchin the snow come down from our shop. Not a lot of kids showed up but alot being accomplished. We be lovin this stuff. Everything sooo clean and crisp. AH, the Great White North, Land of The Blizzard.

Re: Snow Storm
Our meeting was canceled. We needed today to do robotics, because our school is weird and we have finals now so that means that we won't have enough time to meet during the week because all our members will be to busy studying.
|
Re: Snow Storm
We're still meeting as scheduled, but we're prepared to cut out early if the snow gets to be too much. I don't think it's actually started yet... So we'll see!
Of course, this is NH.. we're used to it! |
Re: Snow Storm
We met at 9am today, hoping to go to 5pm as usual, but we stopped at 2pm due to the weather. The roads are thick with snow.
On MLK Jr Day, the normal meeting time of 5pm-9pm got cut off at 7:30pm. We really hope FIRST extends the ship date again this year. The current ship date is during our 1-week winter break while last few years it's been the Tuesday afterwards. |
Re: Snow Storm
We cancelled today's meeting (we have only reached 6" so far, but at least half of our team lives more than a 1/2-hour away)..
But hey, since we're still waiting on the aluminum, it's ok :P |
Re: Snow Storm
we don't meet on the weekends anyway... so it's not too big of an issue for us. still working on stuff like programming at home though.

In NYC, everything was canceled this morning because the schools won't be open. Our Manhattan FLL Tournament and the Sunday Long Island FLL Tournament was canceled. I ran to the local library and got a couple of books, tapes, and DVDs for the long weekend. I still have my LEGO to play with... hehe. :) |
Re: Snow Storm
It started pretty early here this morning, before 10 I think. We started to get "booted out" of the shop around 2 or so. A few went down to our playing field building at the other end of town, before heading home. I quickly decided against it when I had to put the Jeep in 4wd to get up a street in town. Oh well, ride out the storm, stay safe everyone. :]
|
Re: Snow Storm
Our team decided to take today and Sunday off because of the storm........We got quit a bit of snow here. However 2 out of the 3 people in the software crew worked today........but that was because the lived really close, and software takes a lot of time.

Re: Snow Storm
Today the Delaware FIRST Lego league tournament had to be shortened to about 12:30 instead of ending at 4 or 5 like it was going to. the schedule got messed "buggerd" up a bit according to one adult. The day was cut short because about 5-10 teams didn't show because of fear of snow and it started to come down at about 9am ish and hasn't stopped yet. also I'm sure the MOE meeting tomorrow will be delayed or canceled. but i hope not. I hope anyone in the storm will drive safe and be smart on the road.
|
Re: Snow Storm
Yep, we're hanging out at the tech room at school freezing and hoping for the snow to stop. It didn't halt our meeting today, though- a good 10 hours long. Getting a lot done, even with only a few people.
|
Re: Snow Storm
It just started coming down here in Worcester. We're supposed to get between 30-36" in the next 2 days
|
Re: Snow Storm
We had the shop until 3:00 today and it had begun flurrying at about one. But we stayed as long as we could and got out before it got too bad, so that was good luck for us, though a school dance for tonight was canceled :(

Re: Snow Storm
This reminds me of a story I heard from a friend. She was working for TRW at the time and they were working on a project proposal for the military. They were located in LA and right before the proposal was due, the LA riots broke out. Now TRW had a policy of never asking for an extension on a project proposal so they made sure it got done even with the riots ongoing. The interesting thing was that everyone else who was bidding for this project asked for an extension because of the LA riots. Except none of them were located in LA...

Re: Snow Storm
I can't resist, sorry. . . .
It's nearly 80 in Phoenix, Arizona today. I rode my bike in to school this morning before the sun came up and shorts and a sweatshirt were sufficient to keep me warm enough. Most of the team is sporting shorts/tee-shirts at the build today. |
Re: Snow Storm
On Thursday a decision was made to postpone the Maryland FLL State Championship from today until next Sat. It's a lot of work to reschedule these events, but we have a great team here in Maryland led by a tireless FLL partner, Mark Heil.
It's too early in the season to even talk about extensions and I wouldn't hold my breath. There was a couple day extension granted in 2003, but many of the teams it was suppose to benefit, still couldn't get out to work on their robots. What a mess that was. That blizzard happened the last week of the build season. Every team has it's own set of challenges. For some, it's the weather. |

Re: Snow Storm
I hope the snow stops (It's ironic for a HS student to wish for that). If this keeps out, we won't finish our robot on time. We've already lost a few days due to snow. But we have a few days off (5) before ship date which is good and bad. Good: We get longer time to work. Bad: Younger members who can't drive may have difficulty getting to meetings since they aren't already at the school building for school.
|
Re: Snow Storm
yep lots of the snow
We had to cancel the meting today around 1:00 and tommorrrow is canceled too!!? It's gonna be had for us because we're a rookie team. Anyway GO Blue Falcons !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TEAM 1597 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Re: Snow Storm
when i left this morning we had about a foot of old snow and since our shop has no windows we had no idea we had another foot on the gound by the time we left...good thing about living in the North east is they have plenty of snow removal equipment and once it stops it will only be a matter of time before the streets are cleared....the 1 good thing about the snow...fresh powder on the slopes and i am gonna hit them hard come tomorrow morning
|
Re: Snow Storm
Still at meeting in NJ... we got 6-7 inches of snow... but were still rockin.
|
Re: Snow Storm
I'm not sure how much we actually got here in Milwaukee (they predicted 10-15 inches), but the drifts in some places (like on top of and around my car) are at least 24 inches. The city was pretty much locked down this morning, so of course our meeting was cancelled. Its bright and sunny out right now though! Maybe I should go grab my shovel and start digging....

We worked.
We finished out Tic Tac Tetra Tournament, intergrated the robot, named the robot painted the crate, took lots of pictures and video and did alot of work on the animation and the website. People who needed to leave early left but we got things done. |
Re: Snow Storm
We cancelled our meeting today, but met Friday and plan to meet Monday.
|
Re: Snow Storm
Some of our team's committees met today at our facility - I guess the Bobcats didn't make it over to practice? I left just as the snow started falling..
I don't care so much if it snows today, as long as we don't have snow and frigid temperatures for our tailgating party at the UTC New England Regional! Last year it was WAY too cold to stand outside asking everyone to help eat the bagels and donuts! |
Re: Snow Storm
good luck guys w/ the snow-- the only snow we saw is in the pit--aka metal shavings which obv. don't look like snow
|
Re: Snow Storm
i know here in suffolk county it was declared a state of emergency. There is about 6-7 inches on the ground

We had our meeting as usual. Not much happened. Although it was hard for some of us to get to our shop because no salt trucks were out yet. So on that note, I pulled out of my sub and almost slid into the corner gas station....pump(Gulp!). Other than that people just went out for a spin(Literally).
|
Re: Snow Storm
We didn't really get much "new" snow today. We just had to get through the snow that fell last night. (Which was around 3-5 inches.) Good thing we didn't have to cancel because I would consider today a huge day of accomplishment. Hope all you guys getting more snow will make it out ok. :)

Re: Snow Storm
Our super. is kind of a snow-day-nazi (like the soup nazi, but with snowdays) so nothing is ever really canceled. We don't have meetings on sundays but if the snow affects things on monday, then that may be cancelled. I doubt that'll happen though.
|
Re: Snow Storm
Our meeting ended at 1pm, but that's because we got kicked out of the school, not because of the snow. Now no meeting until Wednesday because of midterms.
|
Re: Snow Storm
We have 2 inches on the ground here in Blacksburg, and our super. panicked and closed down everything... we already missed Thurs., Fri, and today's 10 hour meeting...
And there isn't even icing... |
Re: Snow Storm
Yay! Sleding! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
|
Re: Snow Storm
We had to cut short our meeting today by about 3 hours. We ran the meeting 9-1 instead of 9-4. In retrospect, I would have shortened the meeting to 9-12. It was really blizzarding by one here in NJ. Hopefully the roads will be clear by our Tuesday meeting.

Anyways...update: now there is easily over 12" of snow and it is still falling. Special things that I did: found out that with the current amount of tread on my tires and many other factors, my car will not reach any speed over 5 mph in the snow, if I press the gas, the tires just start spinning, so I did have a little fun in the parking lot with that. Me and some friends went to Walmart and got a snow tube and rope and snow-tubed behind a minivan. Lots of fun stuff, I love it...and as for tomorrow, I'll be on the slopes all day snowboarding! |
Re: Snow Storm
yay 20 inches of snow by the end of tomrrow total for this weekend! i hate the cold but i like the way snow looks other then that i hate snow! go away

Re: Snow Storm
The snowstorm reminds me that Rochester has had some of it's worst snowstorms in the first week of March which is the week that we have the FInger Lakes regional.
I certainly hope it doesn't happen this year. |
Re: Snow Storm
Our team isn't meeting this weekend so it's not affecting us. If they close school on Monday then we'll lose a day since our stuff will be locked up until Tuesday.
I don't have an exact amount of snowfall where I am right now. My house is on top of a mountain and it's very windy right now so the snow is blowing around and drifting. One area of my driveway is still bare pavement while the area behind the house is covered with a big drift. Kinda funny to see, my Toyota is clean while my Chevy, which is nosed in behind the house, is buried. |

Re: Snow Storm
We got a few inches of snow here in Montreal today, I suppose it's from the same storm you're going through down there. The drive home was a bit slippery, since they haven't gotten around to dumping some of the hundred-thousand or so metric tonnes of salt they spread in this city every year. It's been a bit too chilly here to snow the past few days, with temperatures somewhere in the minus 30s. However, us being Canadian, it doesn't affect our team at all. In fact, in my five years of high school, and despite feet of snow and lots of freezing rain, I've never had a single snow day... except for that time when that toilet blew up... but that's another story.
|
Re: Snow Storm
Still snowing in good ole Southern New Hampshire.
Drifts, too. Out the window to my left the snow is 3 feet deep. Out the window to my right I can see grass. Predicted total snowfall is 20-30 inches. --Petey |

Only thing we have to worry about is hurricanes and that is during the off season. We all were saying how we were hating Florida during the hurricanes, well now this is when we are rejoicing becasue we are in Florida |

AN EXTREME SITUATION IS OCCURRING IN EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS. FOUR INCHES OF SNOW WAS REPORTED IN 25 MINUTES AT CHELMSFORD MASSACHUSETTS SHORTLY AFTER 7 AM AS THE LAST EXCESSIVE BAND OF POWDERY SNOW SWINGS SOUTHEASTWARD. THE NORTH SHORE IS BEING BLITZED BY SNOWFALL RATES OF ALMOST 4 INCHES PER HOUR. IT MAY LAST ONLY ANOTHER HOUR OR TWO BUT ITS A COMPLETE SHORT TERM PARALYSER. IT IS SPREADING EAST SOUTHEAST AT 15 MPH INTO BOSTON NOW AND WILL CONTINUE THERE THROUGH AT LEAST 11 AM. THIS BIG SNOW BAND WILL ARRIVE ON THE SOUTH SHORE BETWEEN 10 AM AND 11 AM AND THEN CROSS THE UPPER CAPE BETWEEN 11 AM AND 2 PM. IT TENDS TO LAST ABOUT 2 HOURS. THAT MEANS 8 INCHES OF SNOW MAY FALL IN PORTIONS OF THE BOSTON AREA IN A 2 HOUR PERIOD DURING MID AND LATE MORNING. FINAL BLIZZARD TOTALS FOR MOST OF EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS WILL RANGE BETWEEN 28 AND 38 INCHES SETTING A NEW SINGLE STORM RECORD FOR BOSTON... SURPASSING THE AMOUNT FROM THE GREAT BLIZZARD OF 78 AND THE PRESIDENTS DAY STORM OF 2003. ISOLATED TOTALS OF 40 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE. VULNERABLE LOCATIONS FOR NEARLY 40 INCH STORM TOTALS ARE ESSEX... MIDDLESEX... PLYMOUTH... NORFOLK AND BARNSTABLE COUNTIES IN MASSACHUSETTS. EVEN IF THIS STORM COMES UP SLIGHTLY SHORT OF RECORD... IT IS A DANGEROUS STORM WITH THE WORST OCCURRING NOW INTO EARLY THIS AFTERNOON AS WINDS STRENGTHEN AND TEMPERATURES FALL TO NEAR 10 ABOVE. NANTUCKET MAY END UP WITH ONLY 12 TO 22 INCHES... BUT BLIZZARD CONDITIONS WILL DESCEND ON THAT ISLAND LATER THIS MORNING OR THIS AFTERNOON. NORTHERLY WINDS WILL BE GUSTING AROUND 75 MPH ON BARNSTABLE AND NANTUCKET COUNTIES. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS LIFE THREATENING STORM BECAUSE OF SEVERE BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF THE NEWLY FALLEN SNOW AND TUMBLING TEMPERATURES. SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES HAVE OCCURRED THIS MORNING AS WINDS ALL ALONG THE COAST GUST BETWEEN 55 AND 65 MPH ON BOSTONS NORTH AND SOUTH SHORES AND EVEN ON NARRAGANSETT BAY. A 78 MPH WIND GUST WAS REPORTED IN EAST FALMOUTH BY A SPOTTER. THERE HAS BEEN ISOLATED DAMAGE REPORTED TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE. POWER OUTAGES MAY BECOME WIDESPREAD THIS AFTERNOON ON THE CAPE AND NANTUCKET WHEN THE BRUNT OF WIND HITS THERE... BETWEEN 75 AND 80 MPH. DRIFTS OF AT LEAST 6 FEET ARE OCCURRING. OVER CAPE COD... NANTUCKET AND MARTHAS VINEYARD... THE SNOW HAS BEEN OF A WETTER CONSISTENCY EARLY TODAY AND THERE HAS BEEN SOME RAIN ON NANTUCKET. THIS RAISES THE ANTE FOR POWER OUTAGES IN EXTREME SOUTHEAST NEW ENGLAND WITH THE SNOW CLINGING TO WIRES AND BRANCHES. ALL THE HEAVY SNOW WILL TAPER TO SNOW SHOWERS LATER THIS AFTERNOON OR EVENING... BUT CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING WILL PERSIST INTO LATE THIS EVENING ACROSS EXPOSED AREAS. THERE IS A CHANCE OF BLIZZARD CONDITIONS CONTINUING ON PARTS OF CAPE COD INTO EARLY TONIGHT AS HEAVY SNOW SQUALLS POUND PARTS OF THE CAPE. A BLIZZARD WARNING IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OR FREQUENT GUSTS OF OVER 35 MPH ARE EXPECTED WITH CONSIDERABLE FALLING AND/OR BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW. WHITEOUT CONDITIONS OCCUR AT TIMES. THOSE VENTURING OUTDOORS MAY BECOME LOST OR DISORIENTED... SO PERSONS IN THE WARNING AREA ARE ADVISED TO STAY INDOORS. --Petey |
Re: Snow Storm
Here in eastern Kansas we don't have as much problems with snow as we do with ice. Usually we'll be at a meeting in the evening and everyone will start looking up the weather on the internet. If it says it is getting icy, we will be allowed to leave early if we want. Otherwise we just drive slow.

Re: Snow Storm
that weather channel report was the real deal...
RI earlier today was put into a "State of Emergency" as all of the state is covered in at least 20" of snow... we got about 2ft here in Newport, and thankfully its just high winds at the moment... the thing with the winds is some spots have 3in of snow... and in drifts its upwards of 4 feet!!! well the main good thing about this is no school tommorow has already been declared... |

Well, as was said, our Rhode Island state of emergency is putting a damper on things.
No one has school tomorrow apparently, and I cancelled our meeting because people drive up to an hour to get to Brown where we work... we come from all over. I've never seen his much snow ever!!!! I miss summer. |
