i'm gonna have to break with everyone else and say the one on the left. either way, if you decide not to use one set or the other, team 1369 would be happy to relieve you of the excess wheels. ;)

I agree ... I think as far as style goes, neither of them are bad. If they both weigh the same, why not go for the one on the left??

And ... I like swiss cheese ...

Dan,

The reason we went with rivets instead of adhesive is for ease of changing tread at competition. All we have to do is drill out 4 rivets and pop 4 more back in to the new tread. We have tried adhesives in the past and the problem is usually drying time and excess glue on the wheel when changing tread. If you have found a glue which works well, that is excellent.

The wheel on the left looks familiar to me for some reason, John...

Did my 2004 wheels mate, have deformed kids with 2 extra mounting holes, and then sell their offspring to you on the black market? :p

Sexy wheels, man... no matter which you go with.

That would be cool. :)

Andy B.

If JVN did that then maybe his robot could be a showcase item on "Pimp My Robot" ;) But, wouldn't spinners add a little too much weight for what they are worth, but hey that's an IRI idea for teams to do! :)

I think the right one is waaay cooler. But then again, our team colors are orange and blue...

I really like the one on the right. It looks awesome. How long did it take to machine those monsters?

It appears that there is less material overall for the wheels on the right. I assume everyone is picking those in order to make sure they have the greatest chance of 229's wheels breaking in competition.

:)

Yeah, if they break then they suddenly become much less pimp...

I do not think that either of those wheels would break during a FIRST competition. I do like the one on the right by itself, but if the one on the left looks better on the robot I would go with it.

Re: pic: 229 "Bling" for 2005

Thanks for the compliments... We really appreciate them.

The original design (wheel on the left) was done this fall as (note my avatar animation). Unfortunately we didn't meet all our design specifications...

I am (along with Eric and 4 others) part of a senior mechanical design team assigned to 229 (as part of our senior integrated design capstone class). One of our design specifications (created mostly as a joke) was: "4 out of 5 high schoolers must agree the robot is 'blingin'." (You can imagine how difficult it is to create a quantitative specification for "bling".)

The original design didn't make the cut, so we had to go back to the drawing board. The wheel on the right is the final result, and the one that will be on the competition robot.

Each wheel involves about 3 hours of CNC time, plus a few hours of "lathe time". (These wheels are cut from a length of 4" aluminum rod.)
(When 179 posted their prebought wheels, I felt like a chump! I guess we "wasted" our effort, but at least the wheels turned out great, and the HSers got some CNC quality time.)

We thought about spinners, and even have a design done... but we're fighting the weight monster this year. Maybe it will happen, probably not.

As far as "JVN is a dweeb"... I hear 229 may be handing out fake tattoos with that very slogan! That and: "Andy Baker is the God of Hick Rock!"

These wheels won't break. We performed FEA on them using Ansys and they're fine.

We've been running on them for 3 days now, and the tread is staying on just fine. We've done the "epoxy thing" before, and it was just a huge hassle. Changing tread now is as easy as 4 drilled holes, and 4 new rivets. (The pit crew keeps whining about "design for maintenance" and such.)

Thanks again for the compliments...

Wait wait wait. You made those out of a single piece of rod? Wow, i guess it would be sturdier that way, and I suppose since it has to be blingin it was the only way, but dude. We got ours water jetted. Just got them back today and we'll probably post a picture of them. But after seeing yours, I doubt anyone will care. Good job man.
