Lettering in robotics?
are there other teams out there that offer their students letters in robotics, like academic and athletic letters? our school is considering it and i was just wondering if other teams may do the same thing.
|
My team doesn't do that..but..hmm..we could. *looks for Dean's speech about how FIRST is the good parts of sports*
~Angela who just got a good idea... |
LoL, you guys are talking about the proud (well, not really) recipient of a letter for making the Academic Challenge varsity team freshman year. Personally there's no way that I'd ever get a jacket for it, or for the one that I got for being in band for two years. I don't know anyone who would wear it for either of those.
~Tom~, who feels INCREDIBLY un-athletic right now. |
out hrer in Orange VA we are in the process of setting up the criteria for letter in robots (ok i included the rest of academics too)
the kids are absolutely beside themsleve in the hop that we will get approved for this- I will post the criterai that we came up with when i get approved dahl team497 |
Back on team 7, we tried to get letters for robotics for several years. We were rejected by the principal every time. They offer letters in band and we figured we were a heck of a lot more competitve than band is (watch me get beat by all the band people around here ;) ). So I lettered in badminton instead. :)

I'm pretty sure that team 254 (cheesy poofs) got letters when they were still at Broadway.
This year the school changed, and I don't know if they still get letters from the new school. |
Team 108 Used to...
1998 and before, the "core team" that went to chicago would actually recieve a denim motorola jacket with the big M stamped on the back. But after that they never did it again. Go fig. I think denim is more fitting than leather jackets anyways, don you guys??? :p

we rambots tried to get the school to let us letter in robotics, but the idea was shot down, much to our suprise (yeah, right...the sarcasm there is thick enough to cut through)
and robby, of course denims better then leather...just look at dean |
letters....
Gosh, I even envy those of you that had your band count as something to get a letter for. My high school wasn't even that far advanced. :( In fact, unless you are in a "traditional" sport (aka football, basketball, swimming....we don't even have a badminton team ;) ) you wern't able to get a letter....

* beats on Matt *
Actually, The High Priest really isn't sure if we get letters or not for either FIRST or band. -Ed "That male flute player" McDonnell |
At my old school you got letters for sports, band, choir, and I think athletic trainers. Many other teams tried to get them but there wasn't ever hope. The paperwork would get moved from one side of the desk to the trash can. The only thing that was ever read was the subject of the petition. Good luck to those of you who are trying to get letters.

good idea
I like the idea of lettering in a robotics, but i have a question. At our skool they put a patch on the letter that signifies what sprt you are in, iI.E. a football for football or a racket for tennis, i dunno if other schools do this but ours does, so what would we use for the patch? and whaere would we get it?

Ours is pretty much a done deal. The principal has given us permission to design the letter jackets (just for robotics). But we still need to make the criteria that allows you to get the jacket. You can't let everyone get one (well, maybe you can) So for the teams that do offer letters, what is the criteia that the students have to meet?

I know Jason has mentioned something about it before and I've seen the Broadway jackets but I don't think were gonna get them. |

My high school refused to even acknowledge the robotics team as a team, so they wouldn't even think about giving us a letter. And I think they only gave out letters to sports teams and the marching band. We didn't get it for any other performing group.

Lettering in robotics would've been freekin awesome. But, then again, you're listening to the girl who consideres the size SMALL crew shirt she got at Nats simply golden ;)
I think at WHS, if youre good enough on a team throughout the year, you're put on this list....get put on the list twice and you recieve your jacket/letter. If you never get put on the list, you'll get your jacket/letter at the end of your 4th year in participation. Only sports teams get jackets....if you've achieved a 90+ average for 4 years you recieve a blazer with the WHS patch...but not a jacket. (Rant) But also, were talking about the home of the soon-retiring Rico Brogna (who, by the way, will be coaching Waterbury football after he retires, but little does he know that since the state took over Waterbury's budget and are cutting like crazy he may not even have a job) that decides that they can enshrine him, but make a petition to get our 2000 UTC Regional flag off the gym wall because it "doesnt match all the other orange & white flags". Patch Design
I think having a patch with the FIRST logo on it ould be good for the letter jackets. At my old high school we got patches and pins. You got the pin from your coach and the patch was extra when you ordered your jacket.
C~ya, Carolyn who would have loved to have a pin for FIRST next to her soccer ball. |
At our HS, you have to be a member of the varsity team and either participate in a certain number of quarters or start a certain number of games... for volleyball it's the number of matches you play and softball it's the number of innings you have.. also you have to end a season in good standing.. i think that lettering is a good idea, but like dave said, what kind would it be and what criteria would you se?
|
TJē just started this year giving out year patches and a logo patch to all the students that competed with us. (They also gave past year patches to those who have been with the team in past years). I know this was somewhat expensive for our team this year, but hopefully the cost will come down.
