Size Of control box
 

Hello hi
IS theres size limit to control box, of what is the recommended size for a good control box that has 4 joy sticks ? Has any one made theirs yet

<R65> The Operator Interface Console designed by your team must fit on the 69" wide by 12" deep shelf in the Alliance Station and the radio modem connected to the Operator Interface must be able to reach the mounting bracket on the operator stations. Be sure to leave at least 48" of slack in the 9-pin cable.

Be aware ther is an emergency stop box taking up some of that 69", so make allowances.

if your box is exactly 12" deep and because of cables it overlaps the table top will they give you a hard time?

Has anyone found the width of the shelf? My team really needs the width/depth of the actual shelf we have to build for our controls.

The point of your control box overhanging the shelf is more of a problem for you then for FIRST. During Auton mode i have seen robots come from one side of the field directly across and hit at a high speed into the opposite alliance's drivers stations diamond plate wall. The result of this many times for control boxes is them falling to the floor. If your control box is all ready hanging over the edge of the shelf you have a much higher chance of having it fall to the floor. If this occurs and damages your control box or joysticks it is then up to you to fix them. I would suggest you to make a control unit that is smaller then the available space and to have some sort of grip feet on the bottom.

I'm not in any way worried it would fall off, I'm talking around an inch and a half. In any case it'll most likely way too much and have much too low a center of gravity to fall off because of an autonomous robot.

Along these lines, we have a joystick that is much easier to control if it can be held in the hand. Is this allowed, or does everything have to be locked into our operator interface?

If it can be quick disconnected from the OI, I believe it would be allowed.
If it can be left sitting on the shelf, I believe it would be allowed.
If there is a wire running between you and the OI, that would not be allowed.

I know other teams have done human mounted controls, but don't remember the specifics of them. The intent of the "stand back 3 feet rule" is to make it clear that the robot is running in autonomous.
