I know one team that has such thing
814 (our alliance partner in SVR) have a "forklift" or thier robot why don't you ask them about it
|
What are the dimensions on those file cards?

The Beast is Awesome
The people on that team are so nice to talk to, they will tell you the truth everything on their robot.
We played against them and won, here's how They are pretty quick off the line as are we. When they use the wheels they have some air cylinders with some type of teflon disk on the front that they slide over the carpet on until they retract them and engage the feet. We figured that since they latch automatically on all 3 goals and when they had them our robot couldn't do anything (Though some tanks were able to move them sideways) our strategy is to hit the center goal (~2secs) then take it and run into them which causes it to immediately engage. At this point they have not reached the outside two but they have to put the feet down to get the traction otherwise our backup was to spin sideways and change their orientation. It worked, with raw speed not power, I have also seen raw power pushing on an outside goal do it also. What a fantastic robot that was designed way outside of the box that others were designed to. Go Beast!! |
Fork lift
I regards to the fork lift idea:
862 has a forklift based on pneumatics cylinders and some carbon steel forks with specifically this in mind. We never had a chance to use them against beatty though at wmr. Hopefully we'll have a chance to do it at nats. We figured out that we needed to pick them up at the front corner of their bot because the fronts taken up by a goal as well as the side, but we think we could get into the corner and lift them up. I saw beatty get defeated 4 times at WMR and we know another one of their secrets now. |

In the spirit of gracious professionalism:
Beatty has a few weaknesses 1st they can only go forward once the first goal is engaged 2nd they cant switch back to the wheels after the goal is engaged 3rd they cant get all three goals unless the goals are in a straight line so what has to happen is this a fast robot needs to hurry to the first goal in the middle beating beatty to it and drive it into the front mechanism of Beatty engaging it. because the goals are no longer in a straight line they cant engage the other 2 goals. A robot with good traction then needs to come up to the side of beatty and push as hard as they can and push beatty sideways, beatty no longer has anywhere to go because they cant steer. like i said, i saw this happen 4 time and it worked. it may have been a problem with the pads, im not sure, but it did work. I dont think anybody has a chance once they get all three goals however. |
Beating Beatty...
For those of you who did not see Beatty at the West Michigan regional, there is one method multiple teams used to keep Beatty from getting any goals, I repeat 0 Goals. We were thinking it but team 68, Truck Town Thunder, did it first. All you have to do to keep Beatty from scoring any goals is turn them 180 degrees soon after they grab the goals. This doesn't appear to be super easy, some robots had to use both bots, others only needed one. I know teams 68 and 9 could do this by themselves. Once turned around, Beatty didn't do much, their proxy, which now makes weight with both arms, was directed toward their opponents endzone. I'd say that of all the Saturday matches Beatty only got a goal in their own endzone 40% of the time.
It should also be noted that the same team that won with Beatty in Chicago, team 107, picked them at West Michigan, but they were eliminated in the semi-finals. |
The Beast
I would not count on being able to turn them, as I am certain they are working on a way to counteract this strategy right now. In all my years with FIRST, I have been very impressed with the robots put together by Beatty, and I'm certain that they will play a major role at Nationals.

Wow I wish I was going to nationals.
I'd love to see this bot. I mean, there is 1 (maybe 2) threads dedicated to strategizing against it. Rock on Beatty! I'll def be watching the NASA feed to see if anyone does stop the Beast. |
