i found a bottle of the nitromethane methanol mix on the street one day, we made rockets out of 2 liter bottles, but my dad took it away when i got oil all over the sidewalk (these things are like 13% motor oil i believe). but that stuff burned light yellow (butterscotch), very different from their fire. we also caught our grease on fire but it was mostly smoke, our gearbox (the one that first provided) has a few pieces rubbing together which causes it to smoke a lot, does anyone else have the problem?

These are very real. I was there when the pictures were being taken. Its amazing what kind of trouble 4 college students can get into when its late at night when theres no one else around. BTW, it was 95% denatured alcohol not nitro methane or anything expensive like that.

I must add that this was all done in a controlled area with adult supervision. I do not reccomend anyone attempting this without permission or supervision from your adult leaders/mentors etc.

when i first looked at the picture i thought, oh they are just sintering their gears from the powder mettalurgy state. but then i saw the gears had allready been machined!! so i had to check that off my list of possibilities, and then i figured ok, they are just heat treating them, again, NO! i was quite frusterated that i couldnt come up with the answer, that i just had to scroll down and read the rest of the posts :( im dumb. Man i would've loved to been there to see that! thats awesome, and really good pic too!

btw, thats a heck of a lot of gears...:D

BTW, I fly gassers. I buy the good stuff at $2.10 a gallon :D Add a little Klotz (tm) to it, because it's a two stroke, and I'm ready to go.

ahh,. thats why electric is so much better lol.
and at your school's science lab for ethanol. and other hydrocarbons. lots. we were given enough in one lab last year in chem to light the whole sink on fire. i mean, who does a lab if you can copy people's answers and you have a bottle of flammable liquid + a match + a sub. and no, dont do this at home or school kids! its dangerous :ahh:

Well, we were cleaning the parts with the stuff. Our Teacher showed us something he shows his new students... Lighting the gears on fire was sort of the next logical step.

As was mentioned before, this was under close adult supervision in a controlled environment. I really hope you guys (and girls, though I seldom see them burning things for fun as often as boys...) don't take this as license for stupidity.
