I've just come back from seeing an IMAX screening of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," opening tomorrow in a theater near you.

It was remarkably surreal and very funny. I adore the original film starring Gene Wilder and this, obviously, is nothing like that at all. It shares some elements which are likely lifted straight from the book, but is much darker in tone and humor. I've never read the book, unfortunately, but my understanding is that this newest version is moreso similar to the book than the musical.

Is that Gene Shallot? I think it is.

I didn't see a review of his there, but it's doing quite well so far on Rotten Tomatoes.

They should have casted MJ as Willy Wonka instead of Johnny Depp. It would have been a perfect match :D

I just saw Mr and Mrs. Smith today. I wasn't expecting much of a plot, but even the action scenes couldn't overcome it's lameness.

Watched Garden State the other day, and while it was kind of weird/rambling for a good portion of the movie, it ended up being really good.

Yesterday I watched Are WE There Yet, today I watched Without A Paddle, and tomorrow I will probably watch Walking Tall.

I don't really go to the theaters much, so most often I rent movies, when they are released on video.

There were two movies my family rented last week to watch during the hurricane.

The Aviator. Howard Hughes, despite his quarks and OCD, was quite a brilliant and determined man.

I also saw Arlington Road. It was a really good modern psychological thriller about a professor who believes his neighbors are terrorists. I wont give away the ending, but it has a really good twist.

Yes, I wish I could have seen the full thing so I could view it the way the makers wanted it to be seen, but I had to settle for the TV one since it was on.

Re: So...What Movie Did You Just Watch?

War of the Worlds:
The opening was brilliant. (Both the Morgan Freeman Voiceover Open/Closer, and the character set-up) Surprise! Tom Cruise can actually act! I throughly enjoyed watching all of the carnage. And the basement seen where they are hiding from the tentacle was terrific. Though there were parts of the film that just sent it over the edge of horror, and into the realm of cheesiness. For some reason I just thought it was incredibly funny watching all those dead bodies float by in the river. Oh yeah, and Hush-a-by Mountain now brings a smile to my face as I think of the cheesy screams in the background.

The ending also lacks realism, (the relatives live in the one house untouched by any blood vines or destruction), and didn't feel like it had a proper payoff. Though, I must admit, the writers faced an incredible challenge adapting the book to the screen, and they did a good job, but certain plot holes were completely overlooked. (How many people do you know that could survive a 600+ foot drop in a metal cage unharmed?)

Overall though, it was an enjoyable film, I'd recommend it. B+

I just watched Thirteen. It has been staring at me on the blockbuster shelve for the last couple years, and I have always been to embarrassed to rent it because it had a couple of teenage girls on the cover, but I figured if I ever wanted to make real films I better just watch it.

From a visual stand point the camera work and visuals are overwhelming and pretty effective in helping to tell the story. The story and movement of the characters through the film are kinda herky-jerky and never really "get there"... it was a good movie but left me hanging.

I would recommend watching it, but don’t feel that you will come out satisfied

Re: So...What Movie Did You Just Watch?

After spending three weeks in St, Croix I decided to catch up with my movie watching.

The Brothers Grimm
This movie had the definite look of a throwaway project which is a shame considering the talent involved. Terry Gilliam was considered one of the most visionary directors around (and in a way still is) but he too often lets his movies wheel out of control and I don't think he ever really had control of this one. Peter Stormare trumps his unique performance in Constantine with his nearly unintelligible performance here. I don't think I understood one word or action of his character here. Considering all the great imaginative touches here this could have and should have been a much better movie than it was. C-

The Aristocrats
I took in this much talked about set piece which doesn't really have a true narrative. It just has over a hundred different comedians give their take on a rather gruesome inside joke that comedians have shared among st themselves for years and years. Some of them are very clever and funny. Most are gross and a few are more frightening than funny. I particularly loved the card trick and the mime. Bob Saget's piece gets alot of hype mostly because no one have ever heard the man drop f-bombs before (he makes up for alot of lost time). The movie is interesting but in this day and age of media insensitivity (they sell video games where you can supplement interest of actually playing the game by killing off the virtual citizen for fun if you like) and reality overload is it really all that shocking. Someone would put on this act on TV and that's a fact. B-

I saw Back to the Future I and II this morning. This trilogy has, by far, the best writting ever. There's lots of subtle themes that show up (it's all about the details). Things going on in the background often foreshadow what is going to happen soon. Seemingly unimportant events come back to become something big. They even go back to fill gaps in the timeline.

Re: So...What Movie Did You Just Watch?

I saw Spirited Away, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Eurotrip the other day.

Spirited Away has an excellent plot and even though it seems somewhat weird with all of the animals and all, it still was a really good movie, for watching it for the 3rd time in the past month. haha

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was an awesome movie because of the action and the choreography was just amazing. The camera angles and the editing was excellent. The plot wasn't the best and the end just sort of fizzles out, but it still is a really cool movie.

And Eurotrip, that was a really funny movie. "Scotty doesn't know" haha

Serenity
This was the first movie I've seen in quite a while. Definately the best TV to film adaptation I have seen. Sure it's like an overbolown episode of Firefly and I thik the show would have been better served getting picked up by the Sci Fi network the movie is fresh and fun and captures the essence of the show without feeling it has to sacrafice everything to "go big" for the big screen. My wife who is not a fan of the show and had no interest in seeing it went anyways and enjoyed it alot as well. A-

The Gospel
An enjoyable film with great music, they don't surgarcoat that there are problems in the church even amongst the parishoners which these kind of movies tend to do and the scenes in the chapel are quite high energy but the acting ranges from stilted to bad and the story is heavy handed and cleans up too nicely in the end.C

The Corpse Bride
This stop motion curiosity is much more charming than Burton's previous stop motion venture The Nightmare Before Christmas which I admired more than I liked and the same goes for James and the Giant Peach.
WHat makes this one work is the three strong characters who form the lovers triange at the core of the story. Emily Watson's demure bride to be Victoria who in spite of her mother's controlling attempts to suppress her will still burns within her, Johnny Depp's Victor a meek but thoughful and resourceful fellow and most of all Helena Bonemah Carter's Emily who is the heart and soul of the film. She is vibrant, elegant, sensetive and sweet and would be perfect for Victor if she wasn't dead.
THe most interesting set up of this film is that there is no way the story can resolve itself with an absolute happy ending which most mainsteam aniamtion films desperately try to do. Someone is going to lose out and get hurt badly and I like to see a bittersweet aftertaste once in a while instead of a forced happy ending where everything turns out alright and everyone is happy. B+

Re: So...What Movie Did You Just Watch?

There were two movies that I love that were mentioned before in this thread, Thirteen and Léon. Thirteen was an unapologetically blunt, honest, and frightening look into the lives of teenagers and young adults in our society. I thought it was an incredibly well done movie. Léon is another great movie, in a different vein than Thirteen, where someone with not the most admirable of occupations / lives becomes the hero that you root for throughout the movie. That, and Gary Oldman is just plain awesome. I recommend both movies to anyone who doesn’t find the descriptions of these movies on IMDB to be morally reprehensible or otherwise offensive.

Within the past 2 weeks I’ve seen Good Night, and Good Luck, Doom, and The Legend of Zorro in theatres. I strongly recommend Good Night, and Good Luck to everyone on these boards.

I liked The Mask of Zorro back in 1998, but I found this more recent movie to be pretty weak. So much so that my brother, our friend, and I ended up pulling a “Mystery Science Theatre 3000” of our own while watching it in a sparsely occupied theatre. The best part of the Zorro movie was the trailer for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

I played the original Doom video game like a madman when I was younger, and was really excited to see the movie, despite my low expectations for the movie. I saw a 1am showing the day it came out and found it to be entertaining, but was disappointed I had paid $10 to see it at our local theatre. I was especially disappointed in the differences in storyline between the games and the movie regarding the demons’ origin; there was no need to change that much. I mean, if you’re going to take liberties with regard to things like that, you might as well title the movie something else and just credit the game with "inspiration for the movie" so as not to disappoint Doom geeks :p

Movies Mentioned…
Thirteen
Léon
Good Night, and Good Luck
Doom
The Legend of Zorro
The Mask of Zorro
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

I saw Saw II Wednesday night and I thought it was good. Not as great as the first one, just good. The first one was so revolutionary when the end came you were saying "Whoooa." When the end came in Saw II you were ready for some huge twist so it was more of an "aha."

Regardless, it was a pretty good movie and would recommend you re-watch the first one before seeing the second.

Re: So...What Movie Did You Just Watch?

Most recent films I have seen:

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Ware-Rabbit.

For some reason this one left me a bit cold. I love Wallace and Grommit and they are equally fun here but man something feels lost and it just started to grind down near the end.
It's good but I was hoping for great. They're a vicitm of htier own success.B-

A History of Violence
A good intense thriller with great performances particularly Mortinsen, who deserves to be remebered come Oscar time and Bello. It's fascinating watching Mortinsen's character change into a whole other person. Outright chilling in fact. Highly reccomended!A

Jarhead
A solid movie with a unique personal veiw of Marine life in a time of war when war has changed from a military action to a political statement and the biredom and the frustrations of the grunt on the frontline. Lots of good performaces particularly Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard. It would make an interesting double feature with the intense but remote Black Hawk Down to get two different views of modern warfare. A-

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Darker and more weighty than the previous entry (and I find that the series has some pretty dark elements). I like that it hit the ground running and got down to business and had less of that "oh gosh look at this neat magic trick" this or that (or not as much) as the other films did. Personally I think the Voldemont story is out of left field but it serves its purpose. The kids are starting to look more like capable actors and though it'll never be LOTR it is turning into a solid series.

Chicken Little
So this is why Disney shut down the cel animation division and dumped Pixar.
That makes this movie even more frustrating to watch because it had some parts that were fun, funny and even spectacular but the overall piece felt slapdash and tacked together without any real idea of what it was doing or any clue of what directioin it was going. It's just a bunch of sequences featuring the characters from the movie.
The animation is top notch and the character are endering but Disney really doesn't get what make Pixar movies great: the scripwriting. They make compelling, touching, funny, amazing, awe-inspiring movies that take youto another world and leave you hungry for more. Like Disney used to. They haven't for a while and I'm afraid that because this movie made alot of money DIsney is going to assume that this movie is a success and continue making movies like this which would be an absolute tragedy and an insult to the memory of the pioneers at Disney who made the company what it was. The artistry was top notch but it was the storytelling that brought the characters to life and it's just not there anymore.
And that is just really sad.C-

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
Two things come immediately to mind watching this film:
First because this film came out after the Lord of the Rings series it will inevitable be compared to it (unfairly so. They are apples and oranges). That being said LOTR is an absolutely superior work due to the strength of the actors (comapring four children actors to the grown actors that the LOTR series had is very unfair) and the rich evokative story that proved more compelling and intense. I prefered that to the lighter tone of this one. Basially I call this LOTR lite.
Second: The religous allegory. Yes Aslan is supposed to be a CHrist figure and such but any film that deal with the aspects of good verusu evil can have relious overtones. Whether it's using the Force (faith) or following Neo( another Christ like figure) I don't think it's as big a deal as so many people are making it out to be.
The film itself is great looking with wonderful production values and visual effect. The children are good as children go. They're no Dakota Fanning or Haley Jo Osmet but they do well here. Tilda Swinton is quite good. It's a good movie and I hope they do better on the next Narnia book. B-

King Kong
Way cool movie with tremendous visuals and productions values as expected from a Peter Jackson production. Naomi Watts is absolutely terrific and her bond with Kong is not only beliveable but adds weight to the end sequence atop the Empire State building ( I never bought Kong and Fay Wray's bond in the original. She was just this useless screaming rag doll that made me wonder why Kong didn't smash her against some rocks to shut her up. That had to get tiring after a while). At three hours the film is quite a marathon but if you enjoyed sitting thorugh the LOTR films then this much faster paced crod pleaser is a breeze.A+

Re: So...What Movie Did You Just Watch?

Over the past month or two, I've seen:

Rent - I've never seen the stage show, nor do I have much of a desire to. I do like a lot of its music, however. The movie adaptation was weird -- some parts were completely fantastic and did great justice to the music. Other parts were just awful, looking not unlike a really bad Bon Jovi music video.

Shopgirl - This was supposed to be a romantic comedy, but it was really, really depressing. I liked it, but yikes -- not funny at all.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - The best Harry Potter film so far; particularly for its lack of very many of the elements that define the first two as children's movies. I haven't read any books past the middle of the third since I think they're awful, so I don't have much to say about what may have been left out.

The Chronicles of Narnia - This was, uh, bad. I didn't like it very much at all, found the children lifeless, the plot contrived, predictable and boring, and the CG mediocre.

King Kong - This movie is just too long. I liked it on the whole, but I think there was a lot that could've been cut from it. Jack Black was awful, I thought and I grew bored with seeing everyone in mortal danger time and time again. It loses its effectiveness after awhile.

Boy it's been a while....

And the sad part is I haven't watched much since I last posted last year!

Ice Age 2: The Meltdown
In spite of the terrific animation and the good vocal performances(particualrly Queen Latifa) and amusing moments the movie cannot hide the fact that there is no real coherent storyline here. Just pieced together moments that seem like parts of a DVD extra. ANd how may times do we have to see that ratty squirrel try to bag that acorn? Talk about a one note character! C.

Slither
The first thing I thought of when I heard of this movie was this was Night of the Creeps and I was dead on right when I seen it. But I liked Night of the Creeps way better. It revelled in it's genaral cheeiness better. I also kept waitng for Nathan Fillon's sherrif to turn into Mal and start cracking witty one liners (better one liners than what was cracked here). The movie is slimy fun and amusing but it feels ultimately like a gory Outer Limits episode.B-

Inside Man
Now this is more like it!
I enjoy these kind of ensamble twisty mindbenders and that Spike Lee is ffering up something completely different make it all the more interesting. The ending may fall a little short but I heartily recommend this film.A.

Hopefully I'll catch up with my moviegoing now that the FIRST season is done...

Ice Age 2: The Meltdown

I really liked it. Koko Ed has some great points, but I'll confess I loved the squirrel...then again I'm easily amused.

Poseidon

Uh...yah...this was basically sitting and watching a bunch of people die. It had its high points, but it was kinda mediocre.

That's all my recent stuff.

last three:
RV
saw it with Tytus, thus it was a ton funnier than it would have been alone

Rent
good music and good acting, just odd

Just Like Heaven
sooo cute!

RV- YEAH! reminds me way too much of my trip to IRI in 2004, saw it with Anna when i was in Michigan.

Mi3- meh not bad. Killed 3 hours

Poseidon_ omg I can pick that move apart too much stuff that didn't make sense bad acting washed up actors. a 18 year old lifting a 600 pound acetylene tank over his head not much of it made all that much sense what a waste of 8 bucks

i like dirt 17-05-2006 22:08

Kung Pow: Enter the Fist: The worst dubing ever, its all on purpose though. Some of the best usage of green screen.

Brighton Beach Memoirs : Started to watch in English. Extreamly funny. Neil Simmon at his best.

I'm going to agree too, Black Hawk Down is great. The only movie I've really seen recently is V for Vendetta. I thought is was pretty good, some parts were a bit stupid (like V's first bit of dialog) but the action and special effects were nice and the storyline was alright. The politics in it were a bit too obvious, it would be nice if it took a bit of thinking to figure out what they meant, instead of outright telling you. Sometime soon I hope to see The Da Vinci Code, even though I've heard that it's crap.

I saw Remember the Titans, Big Daddy, Joe Dirt, and Billy Madison yesterday. All great movies.
We saw Rememeber the Titans and Forrest Gump last wek in APUSH.
I really want to see The Da Vinci Code soon. I have heard a TON of mixed reviews from friends. I have no idea of what to expect.

According to Rotten Tomatoes Da Vinci Code has an 18% critics rating but a 74% user rating (aka the moviegoers liked it pretty much). People tend to lean more to wards what the general public likes (though people on RT are more like geekish movie buffs like people on CD are the extreme of FIRST) than they do what critics like.

Da Vinci Code is good, i watched it yesterday. It has the same storyline as the book, but there are many diffrences

for those of you who haven't read the book, don't worry if you don't get something right then and there, you will figure it out a couple minutes after the event happened, and you will be able to comprehend it

overall the movie is very well done.... i give it a 8.3 out of 10

Re: So...What Movie Did You Just Watch?

Well, I watched the Da Vinci code. It wasn't as bad as I was worried it would be, but not a great movie either. The storyline just doesn't seem like the type you'd make a movie out of, IMHO, Angels & Demons would have made a better movie. It's the same storyline (I'm not kidding) + more action. But, while I was at the theatre I saw a preview for a movie about 9/11. This struck me as sort of offensive, since it wasn't a documentary or anything, it was a normal movie. (With Nicholas Cage, ugh) That just doesn't seem like the sort of thing Hollywood should be making a movie about, it makes me sort of ashamed to be associated with a society that does that.

I also saw the preview for World Trade Center, the movie was made very tastefully, it honors the heroes who helped during the attacks, It is far more tasteful than other movies that have been made about disasters in our country (i.e. Pearl Harbor) The movie will be excellent (I have seen more than the trailer that was released). Many theaters, including the one I work at will be showing the movie but not the trailer because people who don't want to see the movie should not be surprised by the trailer playing before another movie.

On topic with the thread:
X-3, I enjoyed it, It wasn't fantastic but it was good.

DaVinci code, same as X-3, it was nothing to cheer about, I thought that all of the things that were different from the book made the story worse

Bench warmers- Stupid but somewhat funny

Insideman- very good

Scary movie 4- there was no need for more than one of these movies.

Poseidon- never should have been mad again

Mission Impossible 3- It was OK but I cannot stand watching Tom Cruise

The Breakup (early screening)- Very funny, If you like Vice Vaughn you will love it.

Re: So...What Movie Did You Just Watch?

I liked X3. It was not the same kind of movie as the last 2, but it was a fine action/scifi movie in it's own right. Just not as subtle.

It's worth admission just to watch Wolverine poke some speed holes in everyone, for sure. But no Nightcrawler? That was disappointing.

Re: So...What Movie Did You Just Watch?

Mission Impossible III
Sure Tom Cruise's star has faded significantly in recent years, much to his own doing but I'm not going to hold that against him or his movies. JJ Abrahms adds the right touch the long missing series needed to get it back on track giving it a gritty and humanistic touch that works surprisingly well. Phillip Seymore Hoffman steals the show as a vicious arms dealer. B

Over the Hedge
In the recent years the glut of computer animated films have lowered the standards of the animated film significantly (unless Pixar was attached to the film). There was better quality on the Cartoon network. Well I'm pleased to report that this little charmer has alot going for it. Great animation, action and voice performances. I highly recommend this film. A-

The Da Vinci Code
I never read the book and while the story and the mystery is interesting it also came across as rather cool and obviously very calculated. There are no performances that really stand out which is really surprising with the amazing talent on display here. A slight disappointment but not a terrible one.
About the controversy. I don't see whats all the big deal about. It's a work of fiction for crying out loud but the way so many of Christians are acting you'd think it was in every Church across America instead of the bible. They could instead use it as an opportunity to spread the word instead of protesting that is ignored and despised and people go see the movie anyways. At least a good portion of the American people are talking about God for once. Take advantage of that. C

Cars
Pixar does what Pixar does best. Entertain and lift the art form to new heights which have been pretty low recently thanks to lesser companies trying to cash in on Pixars success without understanding what makes Pixar successful.
When I saw the previews to Cars last year I thought it was going to be absolutely awful and after seeing it I see that that was further from the truth. It is funny and touching and just plain beautiful. That being said I didn't enjoy this one as much as I did other Pixar films. It was flat at the beginning and stock car scenes lacked the adrenaline rush excitement that you would expect. Thus the movie felt more low key than most Pixar films.B

Wow, me and Koko Ed go to the same movies :ahh:

I liked M:i:3, Over the hedge (Note to self. Never give an energy drink to a squirrel) and Cars.
Didn't like DaVinci code even though I like allot of Tom Hanks movies.
I've also have seen X3, The Last Stand. I thought it was pretty good.

I watched "Firewall" yesterday. I thought it was really good, but at the same time I found it hard to believe. But it had a lot of action and I was sitting on the edge of my seat most of the time. Later today I'm going to watch "Anchorman", I've heard that's supposed to be pretty funny.
