Have you named your robot?

So the build season is almost over, and the robots should be fully assembled and running (in a perfect world). Has your team named your robot yet?

Team 1259 decided on ours tonight. O.D.O.R. standing for Over Dosed On Robotics. I know kinda weird but... you only get one robot a year so make it count right! Good luck the rest of the season.

We always name our robots after famous scientists or engineers. This year the bot is Thomas Edison, or just Eddie. Last year was Leonardo Da Vinci.

We named ours Olive. Well, we were in a meeting and somebody suggested it and nobody had anything better so... Olive it is! Olive and I have a good relationship. It's short term as of now but I think this one could really blossom into something. The way she moves so gracefully across the field. I think I might just ask her what she's doing friday night.

Our robots name is CRICK or Francis Crick, Our team name is WATSON so our theme is DNA WATSON & Crick were the people that discovered DNA. Our motto fits in with that Defying New Altitudes or Discovering New Accomplishments. We also thought it would be good to have our robot named in honor of Francis Crick's Death this past year.

We opened up the naming of the robot to the student body. I had the students submit entries and what not. After a while, the team took all the entries and decided on one. ALICE. I think it has something to do with Alice in Wonderland. They also decided to call the team, THE LOOSE NUTS. :)

I'm not sure if this is official yet, but one day I opened my big, Latin student mouth and suggested that we name our robot Apollo, because he's the Roman/Greek god of science and the arts, and Holland High, we're a pretty artsy school, so I thought it was a good reflection of the school. Unfortunately, one of the sponsoring teachers took me too seriously and said that when Apollo #13 was built we'd name it Apollo 13. :ahh::eek:
Not what I had originally intended. :(

this year, its Roccobot 2k5. last year, it was Roccobot 2k4. next year, it will be Roccobot 2k6. :) you get the point.

the "Roc" stands for Rockledge High, and the "co" stands for Cocoa Beach High, and the "bot" part shouldnt need an explaination... neither should the "2k5" part. :p

its tradition... it will never change. :)

yes, Roccobot is the name of our robot not the name of our team.

Following our tradition (of one year) of using names of Titans (last year our robot was named Atlas), we have decided to name our robot Themis. Themis is the goddess of order and justice as well as balance (we figured we'd need her help to keep us from tipping over). She's depicted as the blindfolded woman holding scales that you can find outside of the Supreme Court.

Our robot is named "I, Roybot" - inspired partly due to the book, the song (oh yeah!), the movie, and our High School name and town which is called Roy. Can't really say the vacuum cleaner had much to do with it though. Our team name is Roybotics - so it all just kinda fit together.

Re: Have you named your robot?

We've been arguing it out for 4 weeks... Currently we're split into 2 camps:

The main camp is currently gunning for "Alter Ericius ut est Furtim" which translates from Latin to English as the "Second Hedgehog Which is Stealthy", a tip of the hat to Stealth Hedgehog, which was our robot a couple of years ago.

The other camp wants a reference to united in the name, which is currently being bashed down due to it being led by Manchester United and Cambridge United fans.

today, we had a team meeting while waiting for the fed-ex guy to show up. after several stupid sleep-deprived suggestions (about 10 people spent the night finishing the robot), we decided to name it "Kara," our engineer's daughter's name. i think she's about four years old. She hangs out with our team and was at the lab yesterday and today.

Re: Have you named your robot?

well i missed the day we voted for the robot and i really didnt like the outcome but w/e. we, i mean they, decided to call the robot S.O.S., which is usually a distress call. But for this it stands for son of shazbot, one of our earlier robots. I just have a feeling it is going to haunt us during the competition.

Yeah well, the past two years at HHS we've been operating on unofficial names. My freshman year the robot, unofficially was named Zeus, last year it was unoffically named Orion, and fortunately, they didn't listen to me and my lame Apollo idea and we're thinking of either calling it VERN 2.0 or the Wonkavator (long story there). :)

Re: Have you named your robot?

Yeah my team just named ours. "Agora Tracer IV"- it has layers upon layers of meaning. Two of the main problems we had in this season were funding and programming. Agora relates to these two problems through its definitions: both the programming language and the currency. Our bot commemorates fixing both of them and serves as a monument to the future teams to always keep on trying like our team did. IV was put on there because its my lucky number and one of our team members is a IV.

We have a tradition of using obscure movie quotes to name our robot.
The names do err on the side of being uncouth if you know where they came from, but I can live with that.
Last year, the name was Uncomfortable Hunk of Metal.
This year, it is Charlie Foxtrot.
