Shelley_delphi chick 19-01-2003 23:54

Girl point of view

I would seriously have to agree with purple daisy on what she had said about the whole flattery deal. I play hockey (roller) with about 25 other guys on Sunday nights. They have come up with some pretty good things to yell across the rink at me, everything from ...... I'll help you with your slap shot tonight..... to falling down in front of me and making me fall on top of them (my vertical leap isn't that high.....I've tried!!) I seriously don't think that it attracts me to that person as much as it is revolting. Saying my eyes are pretty or giving words of encouragement are great and I smile about those, not the you have a nice rack comments. I guess it might help to tell you that I'm a senior in high school and all these guys I play with are 20 and up. They are only thinking about one thing and most robotics guys have their heads outta the gutter and think logical. I just wanted to add my two cents to purple daisy's post, so maybe you guys would take a hint in coming up with your pick up lines!!

At South Fork, the first two years are the Pre-IB program...this is to eliminate the people who won't do it (they chose not to) and tries to remove those/discourage those who won't make it.

purpledaisy 21-01-2003 22:00

with us they just say, you want to take an AP class? hahaha! good luck! oh and btw, once school starts, you can't drop it... enjoy!

/me has had bad experiences with people being in AP classes when they shouldn't have been

rwaliany 21-01-2003 22:16

I need more ap classes, Im bored... They wouldn't let me in any more AP due to my bad performance frosh/soph year. Come on, I only have 3 AP + 2 College + H Physics.

Counting only my AP class cumulative gpa, I think it's around 4.83333.

Counting my standard classes it's about 3.0, or less.

I do a lot better in AP classes for some reason.

Shelley_delphi chick 22-01-2003 14:14

dude.....

You seriously need to work on those non AP classes. It seems like you sleep through them? I mean I've taken regular government and i decided to take regular english this year to lighten the course load. I've taken all AP courses my whole life and so on, but I took the non AP just so I could get the A and not have to work as hard for it. In our school AP classes aren't weighted and IB classes are, so why bust my rear for a B when I can sleep through the class and get an A!! Just my logic though......

P.S ...... I thought that this was a pick up line thread......

I just heard a funny one........ Some guy Imed me and I go do I know you and he was like I was trying to work on that?!?

it;s kinda lame, but hey it was original!!

Harrison 22-01-2003 20:21

All a guy really needs to do (girls too), is find an excuse to start a conversation with a girl they like. Get talking, and keep talking, and maybe if you're lucky the girl will also find an excuse to talk to you.

MRL180YTL2002 22-01-2003 20:43

That works.....always...the excuse part...not exactly. All you need to do is start a conversation and have more of them....for some of them...no excuses are needed just say you need to talk to someone....no questions asked....you don't need to say who. people eventually catch on though. Phone call, e-mails, and letters work too..... ;) I know....but Pamela and I aren't dating as of now...or maybe we never will....but hey we're friend for life.

Shelley_delphi chick 22-01-2003 20:44

He's Right

After careful consideration, I decided to take a PM alittle farther and I'm him. His PM gave me a reason to IM him and he found some kinda crazy subject to PM me about. We're both shy people and it's working for us!! I've been enjoying our conversations!! :yikes:

Harrison 22-01-2003 21:27

Yeah, its a very good movie. The best is when he hires the marching band, sings across the stadium "I love you baby...." (some of the lyrics), gets detention, and one of the soccer girls (I think it was his girlfriend) flashes the teacher while he sneaks out the window.

Specialagentjim 22-01-2003 22:58

I've never used a pickup line...I tend to loose control of my brain and suddenly it's like ".... uuhhhh..hi.... ::she's gone now:: Wow...I had a whole thing planned out in my head...."

Anyone guessed it yet? Yup, I've never had a g/f, lol

But anyways, there was a list of pickup lines that were totally obscene that I would NEVER think about using, but just pretty funny to picture someone's reaction to them...something about an iceberg and nice shoes...if you've seen the list, you know what im talkin about...Its really NOT right...

purpledaisy 23-01-2003 21:05

it's funny about the french... i actually take french class, i have since 7th grade (i'm in 12th now, you can do the math). I'm one of the more proficient speakers in my class, so people are always asking me to check their french for them. i never noticed how wrong that could sound until my boyfriend asked me to help him study his french for his final. he told his grandmother that's what we were doing, and she asked him what kind. innocent little me took a few minutes to understand what she meant...

You can't say Chinese...what dialect?

I know Cantonese and Twaisanese (not to sure about it being spelled in English, forgot the little Maderin I know). The worst is when you mix up the dialects...I get my point across to who I'm talking to but I'm not fluent nor am I literate in any of these dialects.

I've learned 5 languages because the dialect themselves are languages all to themselves.

1) Catonese
2) Twaisanese
3) English
4) Mandarin (like I said don't remember it)
5) Spanish for IB tests

(1 and 2 are interchangable because I learned them both at the same time, none of my grandparents but one speaks English and you can forget my great-grandparents too).

Shelley_delphi chick 24-01-2003 11:23

At My School.........

We offer a number of foreign languages. We offer......

1. French
2. Spanish
3. Latin
4. German
5. Chinese
6. Swahili

So, we are a melting pot of all those languages!!

MRL180YTL2002 24-01-2003 21:45

Our school offers French and Spanish. That's it...and quite pathetic.

srjjs 24-01-2003 22:11

Yes, you can say chinese, because when you do, it refers to mandarin the same way the square root of 9 refers to 3, not negative 3.
Taiwanese speak mandarin anyways.

MRL180YTL2002 24-01-2003 22:29

its not Twainese. Its a set of different dialects as my family comes from mainly southern China but each family group speaks primarily Twaisanese and Cantonese dialects. And yes these are Chinese....juust like in Spanish there's Castilian Spanish, Puerto Rican Spanish, etc... Manadrin I believe is from the North, being from the South, we don't like the North (if you look at Chinese History, the South is where thetrouble starts for the most part). Furthermore, its a regional thing...each region...different dialect. Now the writing is the same (well there is a difference between the PRC's characters and prior to PRC characters as the People's Republic of China to help combat illiteracy simplief writing) but the dictions, phonics, etc... is different so they are languages all to themselves.

srjjs 24-01-2003 22:51

They are not that different. If you speak Mandarin to someone who speaks any dialect (not cantonese) you will understand each other. Everyone speaks Mandarin, just different dialects of it.

Actually, not exactly, because some dialects may be like cantonese where it will be very difficult and hard to understand each other. It's sorta like trying to use cognates to find out what they're saying in spanish

Thank you! Some dialects have differents tones, dictions, the only thing that is the same is how you right the characters. Fish in Mandarin and Cantonese is two differen sounds altogether (don't remember what the madrin one is as I never use it). Some one who knows Cantonese will not understand what the person who is speaking in Madarin, or even Twainsanese. Youhave to remember before Emperor Chin unified the country in XXXX B.C., it was seperate states, each with their own dialect and different writing style. Only the educated knew more than one dialect, that of their region and the court (government official). Chin standardized writing and the court dialect was of his region. The common peasants only needed to know regulations, tazes, etc... therefore the educated.....member of the court and bueacracy need to know multiple dialects to conduct business. These dialects survived as there was no educating the peasants, only the wealthy could afford it. In fact even today in Chinatown, its Cantonese, Twainsanese, not necessarily Mandirin in some places.

But what does this all have to do with the topic of the thread....my point is....I can swear and insult people with very few people who know what in the world I just said. It also comes in handy when I visit my family....a) I look better as I can actually say stuff and hold a conversation.... b) I can get stuff (order stuff like food but I'm not allowed to as I am not fluent)...c) out of all my cousins...I understand the most! When someone who doesn't understand it is around, knowing the another language helps in doing stuff that you don't want them to know. Actually, Pamela (she's on 179, not 180), my best friend, finds it interesting and impressive that I know other languages.

hixofthehood 25-01-2003 18:08

Oh wow! I just remembered...it seems like it's been ages. In my 8th grade Spanish I class we each wrote two or three pickup lines. That was so great!

I'd say it's more like spanish and portugese. Not very difficult. My second uncle speaks beihe, my grandparents speak shaanxi. Not a problem. Sometimes different dialects use different words more frequently, but besides that, it's not too hard to understand.

I've been told that it's easier for non-native speakers whose pronunciation is terrible in the first place.

BTW, I beleive the correct names for the spanishes are american and castillian, not "from mexico" and "from spain."

hixofthehood 26-01-2003 03:07

There are like....5 dialects of Spanish in Spain itself, żno?

Oh, and down here in florida, the only day's that we get off randomly for here is hurrican days...Can't ya picture us all?

"Yai no school, let's go out and play!"
::15 minutes later the children are back inside::
"AHHH, 2x4's at 40 mph!!"

[Edit] Oh, and for the record, I'm juss not commenting on the rest of your post [/Edit]

Harrison 30-01-2003 00:16

What state is round on both sides, and hi in the middle?

srjjs 30-01-2003 00:37

Shelley_delphi chick 31-01-2003 14:41

What.....??

I maybe a blond now, but ya'll have just lost me. Where did this Ohio stuff come from, other then myself saying I as in Ohio and Harrison is in Canada? Kinda lost over here can someone clue me in?!?

utishpenguin 31-01-2003 18:54

i think all of this came from a random comment made by harrison..maybe having some sort of connection to ohio? haha im lost too

MRL180YTL2002 31-01-2003 19:47

Me too....now I'm lost. So what's the lamest pickup line.... "Your bandwidth must be great" (Pirates of Silicon Valley)

Harrison 31-01-2003 21:25

The Ohio stuff came from me asking "What state was round on both sides and high in the middle?"

Seeing as we were ALREADY TALKING ABOUT OHIO, I kinda assumed that someone would instantly answer my joke.

The answer is of course Ohio.

oHIo (round on both sides [o], and high [HI] in the middle).

Yeslek50 31-01-2003 21:43

I got the joke Harrison, don't worry, it was pretty much straightforward, I dunno why no1 got it, lol ;)

ttyl!

srjjs 31-01-2003 22:35

We got it, team 840 just has a twisted sense of humor, that's all. Of course, everyone in the middle of California is high, so we couldn't really tell what you meant.

Shelley_delphi chick 01-02-2003 12:21

lol.....

I got the OHIO joke........duh!! I live in Ohio I get that all the time. I was more confused about the comments after that. Harrision.....you have way too much time on your hands and you might wanna get a hair cut with that time!! ::remembers conversation we had the other night:: The pool needs my supervision so I must get going (I'm a life guard for those who didn't know that) and get myself to work!!

Aloha,

I don't have any interesting stories about guys trying to pick me up at a competition. However, at 25's Brunswick Eruption this year I told a member of 222 that I would Lei him for his pineapple. Of course, it was said with a little more enthusiasm than was needed. =) By the end of the day I ended up lei-ing him twice for his plastic pineapple. I was happy. And that pineapple will be coming with me everywhere this year. =)
