247 actually, because I got the same. I found it a lil funny actually.

randomperson 23-03-2003 20:17

247! Of course.. I knew that ! :D

LoL.. I knew it was a 240-something.. and myself personally thought it was really funny.. but our driver didn't like it very much.. hehe. Threw the button away.. oh well.

FREE HUGS?? i LOVE free hugs,
at the nats last year, some guy had this thing flashing around
that said 'free hugs' and i ran up to him though a crowd,
pulled at his sleeve (me being short) like a little kid and said
'i want a hug!' and he gave me one!!
my fondest memories of a FIRST social
... but i still don't know who that guy was

I should do that at Nationals! Just look for the guy w/ a robocards team 5 jersey on, and with a sign saying "hugs for free, with a 1 $ donation" (j/p, i'll wear the jersey and sign saying "Free Hugs" though)

randomperson 23-03-2003 20:41

Favorite button.. hrm.. I didn't do much button hunting.. oh wait, those blinking thingies from one of the delphi teams! That was cool.. but I lost it :( Our buttons sucked as well.. and you guys (5) ran out of those other blinking thingies that go on the glasses or something.. they were blinky thingies though.. lol. Good stuff

My fav I got last year from the Space Coast Team (233 I think), it said "Real Men Wear Pink". I was wearing it again this year (sadly I didn't get many new pins this year because I had my head stuck inside our bot for 2 days).

How about all those Glow Sticks given out at the GLR? ;)

randomperson 23-03-2003 21:04

Yeah.. I was wondering where you got that button from.. couldn't find it anywhere.

And about you having your head stuck in the robot for two days.. sorry about that.. lol, some of it was our fault. But we still love ya, you guys should have been picked for the tournament!

LoL.. this thread has deviated from its subject.. again. Eh, who cares?

Harrison 23-03-2003 21:10

Nah, the part that your guys did damage too we replaced in favour of a stronger part. It was drill trannys blowing up that kept my attention (yay for crappy couplers).

But hey, damage or not, we were pushing the B.E.A.S.T. around (sry, just had to get that in...lol)

As for the subject......This is Delphi, are we are on topic for more than 2 replys? I think not!

kristen 23-03-2003 21:10

My favorite button if definitly the one that was given to me by a member of MOE in annapolis that says "My name is Kristen and I build robots. Hug me" ;)

Those things from CD was one of the best light-producing ones I got.

Us running out of them is because I had a very short limited supply, sorry about that. Hopefully PR people will get more by Nat's. I was gonna wear them like I did at a few inventationals...by putting them on the lenses of my glasses (it got a lot of looks...;)). You should've got a limited edition button, they are really cool IMHO [please note: I'm a firster in robotics]

haha worthy amibition... my friend actually asked the sn from his cute guy from gunn last yr and they have been in contact till now... haha

DarkRedDragon 31-03-2003 21:05

this question has allready been asked probably, im just too lazy to find out, what is with the whole "im gonna be at this place and i have to ask someone out" mentality? i just confuses me...

purpledaisy 31-03-2003 22:33

There's no mentality that you have to ask someone out - pick up lines can be a good conversation starter, even if you're just looking for a friend. It's (usually) a safe way to get a laugh and a better way to get someone to notice you than sending your friend, even if you don't want to get romantically involved. I don't think any of us really expect to find the person of our dreams and ask them out using a pick up line, we're (I think) just having fun.

Harrison 31-03-2003 23:00

I didn't mean it as a pick-up line, but at the Canadian i started a conversation with an american girl by saying to her: "Say About".

Boy did I get an odd look...

*looks around for Kristen* (she can attest to the odd look I got)

Kevin A 01-04-2003 00:49

Its realy hard to get up the guts to ask a girl out, or to strike up conversation, but to u more experienced people, does it get easier to hook up with ppl after youve done it once?

I don't thinks so, I mean, it's your frame of mind that has to
change over time.
You could feel different things for different people
so as long as you are comfortable with your self
and that's about it.
I guess it can get easier because you will see that
it's not that bad (hard of a thing or major),
but it also depends on how intense the feeling you have is.

To me, personally, it's all fun and games,
I'm not shy about it,
if I like a guy I tell him,
I don't expect anything in return,
or I don't tell him, doesn't matter
I like friends - and usually the guys i tell
are just like 'o, OK, cool' and that's that.
and I'll have some guy tell me that
he has a crush on me, and i'd
be like 'o, OK, cool,' and he would still feel
comfortable in calling me up and
tell me about some girl he's in love with
(yes, this is true, is happening with 2 guys right now)
and that's what rocks, you can say 'i like you'
and not feel weird.

You can't try to rush things sometimes --
if they know how you feel,
that's cool, maybe something will happen,
maybe not.

but that could just be me.
sometimes I'm a little too laid back and oblivious for my own good;) :D :p

Kevin A 01-04-2003 19:08

when a girl flat out asks you if you like them, is that their way of saying they like you?

I don't know what everyone else thinks but..

Well, it usually depends on the girl...but most likely, yeah...it's our way of telling u that we like u. :)

4 me though, I'll usually say something some what directly... :p

Kevin A 01-04-2003 22:51

Yea, i would rather be told flat out. Today somebody came up to me and asked me if i liked them...i told the truth and said no. Would I have treated her differently/the situation differently if she had said she liked me? I dont know, and i dont know how i would have reacted. She doesnt know how i would i have reacted, which is probably why she didnt ask me. All i have to say is im not out there to hurt anybody.

ok, here is my next stupid question about dating and the comps, where the heck would u go out on the date? or would u just do things together, ugh, i feel so stupid...

Johca_Gaorl 02-04-2003 12:18

At a comp? You can't really go on a date unless you are both out of high school, cause then you don't have to obey school rules of staying in the comp area. I'd say just hang out with each other, if you are in the same hotel, that's cool too.

Willenium® 02-04-2003 16:22

sorry if I'm changing the subject a little. But during the nyc regional a guy from team 549 came up to one of the only girls on my team and proceeded to tell her that he and his team thought she was the hottest girl at the competition. I looked inside and saw his whole team lined up against the wall out of the girls site, and all of them were peeking anxiously at the girl.
Funniest thing I saw all competition.

As for dating at a competition, that's a no-no with FORD teams...it's in the rule book...:)...and I'm sure a lot of teams are in compliance with their school rules...

Very true :) Each day of competition is structured and everyone has work ...sometimes though, if you're lucky, you'll be able to hang out for a while during scouting or during a lunch break...

somehow i always wanted to know more people through competitions... but everyone is soo busy and hanging out with their friends in the team... i cant be that random and ask to be friends... alas

Melissa H. 02-04-2003 21:55

IMO cheering in the stands is the best way to meet and get to know people. When you share the same cheering section as another team, you get to know them pretty well:)

purpledaisy 02-04-2003 22:12

Well, as I'm one of those people who comes home from a competition with several new friends' email addresses, let me just say this - just go up and talk to the person. you don't have to be a slacker to meet new people, you just need to have a robot/team that doesn't keep you busy in the pit 24/7. That can mean being a scout, being a "cheerleader" in the stands, whatever. Most of the time, just go up and say hi, if you're nervous about being rejected, bring a friend - that way if they're a jerk, you can laugh at them as you and your friend walk away. Most FIRSTers are pretty nice to people if you don't try to pull them away from the robot or a strategy session or something. Or, another one, look for the person sitting alone in the dining area, and ask if they mind if you join them. Usually, at least this is how I am, if they're sitting alone, they're either exhausted to the point of not being able to support rational thought, or hoping someone will come and talk to them.

codeoftherobot 03-04-2003 00:09

The only time I'm able to get out of the pit is when I am at lunch. I occasionally meet some of the scouts and talk with them but I'm coordinating our pit area so I am really busy (you do this, you do that, DON'T BOTHER ME!). Most of the scouts that I meet are really nice and I make quick friends with them.

Melissa H. 03-04-2003 00:25

Scouting, I think, is the best way to meet people...also, during a match, cheering with an alliance works.

Is this off topic? I have that habit of going off topic...:p

Be weary of that. I speak from experience, even if you are within the "Rules of Co-habitiation" as my Model UN peeps would put it, people tend to get the wrong idea if you're hanging out with a member of the opposite sex in a hotel. Even if you're just watching a movie or playing cards, or something else innocent, people tend to talk, which can be disastrous to one's reputation (especially if her roommates come looking for her, and your teammates happen to walk by as all four of them leave your room)

Jeff Waegelin 03-04-2003 16:24

Eh.... what's wrong with spending time in someone else's room? I did it all the time at both regionals.... though I suppose I did get a few weird looks, our team is pretty liberal as far as that goes. Generally, if the people in the room let you in, and there's more than just the two of you, it's okay with us. We watch movies, play cards, and talk all the time with members of the opposite sex. It's no big deal.

totally! that would rock

purpledaisy 04-04-2003 12:10

Umm, drd, hate to throw the damper on the plan, but I know our coaches better than you do, they won't let you visit other hotels after hours, most likely. It's not like Disney, where they're back to back. If we're in the same hotel (and we're staying at the Radisson), sure, hang out! It's a blast! But I doubt you'll be allowed to go to someone else's hotel.
Sorry

Getting back to pick-up lines and funny stories ...

This year, at the Midwest Regional, one of the guys on our team was scoping out a girl on team 829. He asked one of the girls on my team to go over to her and get him a button. So, the girl on my team went over to the 829 girl and said, "Umm ... could you do me a favor? See the guy over there with the big curly hair, sitting above the guy in the red hat? Well, he'd really like it if you went over there and gave him a button! Please? I just want to see his reaction!" So she did. His face turned *bright* red. Heeheehee ...

Then there were the guys in the pit next to us, who came up to ChellyZee93 and I and asked, "Can we take your picture? Please?" So we let them. Chelly left, and about ten minutes later the guys came back. One of them asked me, "Hey, can you take a picture with my friend here?" The friend was like, "Wha - huh?? Uh ... Um ..." Hmm ... I wonder how the pictures turned out! :)

Well... I had a guy come up to me and tell me he'd been hitting on the OTHER girl with the daisy head all day... then he came up again later and said, oh here's a pick up line suck my...

I wish I were kidding.

Then there was the guy from 87 who tried to tell me I'd gotten drunk and we'd flown to LA and been married by Elvis... he came back later and told me he wanted a divorce because I was so mean to him... since I didn't agree to the marriage, I had no problem agreeing to the divorce...

yeah, I have strange friends...

so i'm walking around the corner to my pit and this guy comes up to me and says hi. so i say hi back b/c i like to be friendly to other teams and he pulls this bulldog out of a plastic bag and asks me if i want to buy it. now i'm really busy so i'm trying to get rid of him nicely and say no thank you and continue on to my pit but he won't leave me alone. so i ask him how much? he says 10$ and i say, no thanks, that's going to pay for my dinner tonite. his response: well you can buy the bulldog and i'll buy you dinner tonite...at that point i was like, umm....no......thank you........gotta jet!

Look for a friend, it's the easiest way,
you don't have to worry about looking smooth,
people need more good friends then anything else.

No guy has ever used a pick up line on me...Not at a robotics competition at least...go figure

But last August I met this guy at the fair, and he had bought a chess set, so we were playing chess. He was beating me soo badly...and I was like "on man, I suck at this game" and he was like "it's all right. We still love you" So I said, "We? Who's we?" And he responded, "Would you rather I said 'I'?"

He got me involved in robotics. We've been together for 7 months now. :]

this happened last week at nationals. two girls from my team and i were on our bus with some guys from another team. i forget which team, they had dark blue shirts and one guy was named tom or something. the friends i was with both worked on controls, and these two guys started talking. one was talking about how to use huge capacitors to shrink coins and stuff. dumb things he'd done with electrical circuts. then the other guy starts talking to christina about computers. so the electricity guy is feeling threatened or something, so he goes, "yeah, that's his wet dream, to find a girl he can talk to about computers." and the computer guy replies, "but you were just talking about electricity!" and they start bickering and start a silly little catfight between them, to establish alpha male superiority or something. then my friends who are both in martial arts (as well as me) start beating up on each other too, just to join in because they like to fight. it was kind of surreal.

however, i have never been hit on. guys tend to ignore me. (sigh) there was a hot guy who was at the cleveland regional and at nationals from that team that had the yellow jersey-style shirts. his name is michael and he's really hot and he hung around with a mohawked kid. he was giving out free hugs and i got three. if anyone knows which team that is, tell me please! he's really hot!

Breanne M 14-04-2003 19:40

ok here's one:

him: excuse me, are you a model?
me: No.
him: No? well can i get your autograph anyway?
me: No. (said while laughing slightly)
him: how about your phone number instead then?

his attempt was kinda cute... unfortunately he wasn't. I ended up not giving him my number. I think it would have been a lot more productive for him if he had just asked me for my number instead of using that terrible line. I may have given it to him.

Breanne M 14-04-2003 19:42

by the way that was one of the VERY RARE times that a guy has ever hit on me.

kristen 15-04-2003 11:10

Next year, I think I should compile a list of pickup lines and then test them out at competitions to see which ones are the most successful.

This other girl on my team, Jen, and I accidently scared a guy at the Canadian regional when we tried to have a conversation with him .. haha. He seemed really fearful of why we were randomly talking to him.

Sorry if this is a bit off topic... but

I met this girl at the pool @ the Raddison... she was really cool we talked for awhile but I had to go so she said we would talk @ the competiton the next day. Well long story short I didnt have anytime to go scouting people out and find her. I dont know what team she was on but I know she had to wear a "Cat-like" mascot costume and I think her name MIGHT have been Heather. If anyone knows who this is please let me know.

THANKS!

BTW- She was wearing Glasses

If she was a driver in a cat-like mascot costume, she was proboly one of the two from team 57. We played a lotta matches with this team and hung out with them over in the staging field. I don't know their names, but team 57 had three cat-like costume people in the drive box, two girls, one guy. Hope this helps ya!

Btw...
If you've been hit on disrespectfully by a 108 member, PLEASE let either me or Mark Hamilton know, we will be more than glad to beat said person for you. All we need is a short description of the person and their actions. From that, we'll make sure that justice is served for you. Again, the views of some of our team members do not reflect the views of our team, heh.

After reading a lot of those pages, but not all of them, I have one thing to say...

dlavery- If you would of tried any of those pickup lines that "didn't work" on me, I probably would of hung out with you the whole competition. I am more in personality then looks ( then again, I know a lot of the HeatWave people and they are Hott (jared) but we won't get into that ) But yea a sense of Humor is always a nice thing to find in a guy, then again just someone saying "Hi" is nice, lol.

AT Regionals, it was to my knowledge and confirmed by my friend in Auto at school, that a girl who actually works on a bot and has grease all over her and doesn't care is ard ot come by, so needless to say I ended up meeting a lot of people at Regionals, and even more at Nat's.

But some funny pick-up lines I have experienced is infact from a mentor for one of his students....whom I will keep nameless:
"Hi, are you Megan?"
"Yes..."
"Question, do you know ::insert name here:: over here?"
"I am not sure, I cant see him, I am near-sighted"
"Well, he is hiding behind the crate, but he was wondering if you would sit next to him on rides at 6 Flags tonight"
Sure enough the team paid my entry fair...o.O

And..."Hi, can I have your number" to which I reply "Sure ::Writes team number on te arm::" I ended up being good friends with the guy now...haha. Then again that was pretty funny too...

Also poor 701 believe it was, my "pick-up line" I guess you woudl call it, was some guy told me to do a trck for him at Nat's, in order to get JElly Beans, and I drew a picture onhis hand, by the end of the day, I think I drew 50 pictures on guys hands, if you call those pick up lines, lol. and no Heatwave, they weren't pick-up lines on you, pfft!

But in conclusion dlavery you rock!

hehe, you can tell me too, since i think i was in a let's just smack all of you guys for being related in any way to SOAP.... hehehe, and yeah, you and mark and the rest of the guys know not to tick me off... except arefin apparently... so yeah, i'll help beat them. and if the person was on 71, first, i'm REALLY sorry, and i'll beat them senseless... and make it look like i was impersonating our 2003 bot. hehehehe.

FUNNY STORY TIME!
so i was in 6 flags friday night, walking around with my teammate kharnicia. some boys have the misconception that girls like to have their attention caught by PPST! HEY YO! YOU! GIRL IN THE PINK SHIRT! (this is very wrong. please don't do that.) so i tried ignoring them, but nece wasn't catching on, so she pointed them out and i HAD to turn around and talk to them. I tried just giving the guy the cold shoulder, hoping he'd get the hint and avoid the impending ebbarassment, but noooo, so i ask him if he'd seen anyone from team 108. 5 minutes pass, this guy's still following us, and he had kept asking us questions until a lightbulb must have dawned when he asked "why are you looking for 108?" and i TRIED not making him look really silly by juss telling him "the guy i'm talking to is on that team" but his friends still made fun of him, and he turned around like no other.

th moral of that story is: if they're trying to walk away, don't pursue unless you wanna look pretty dumb in front of your friends

Team87MascotGuy 17-04-2003 13:57

YUO GIRLS HAVE NO IDEA HOW ENTERTAINING THIS IS, AND WHUTS UP MELLIE, YOU KNOW WHO I AM.

ALL THESE PEOPLE GOT THE WORST LINES, $@#$@#$@#$@# IT, IF YOU WANNA PICK UP A GIRL AT LEAST USE A GOOD ONE;

BEFORE USE MAKE SURE THEY KNOW WHUT A DOZEN IS, LOL, ITS BETTER IF YOUR ALONE, IVE GOOTEN A KISS ON 5 OUT OF 6 GIRLS ON THAT ONE, :) .

Aloha,

I was having fun in Texas with one of the kids from Brazil. But the "pickup line" I used on him at Rutgers was, "Hey, do you guys have any buttons?" That has to be the best way to get someone to at least notice you're alive.

That os the most common line in robotics, it always works.

Any guys got any buttons? ;)

Ravenwriter: that has to be the sweetest thing ever! A guy friend of mine said that to a girl he liked... and gave her the roses... she loved it(from what I hear)... if a guy did that for me I'd probably melt. *sigh* that is SO romantic...

ditto... that romance stuff really does work. *cough*..guys..*cough* ;)

Sophey Chan 20-04-2003 22:04

I figured out something, ask Tyler on 662 (Halon) I usually talk to my guy friend, long distance, at my expence mind you, and to tell other guy friends I do it and then go "Well I would call you, but don't have your number" That is so uber awesome, I now own Tyler's number, haha. I told him I had to post it, it has works like 5 times so far, whee.

As for something totally sweet. believe it or not, I will levae the person nameless, less they wanna fess up, but one of my friends is going to try and make a 4 hour round trip, twice mind you (once for parents to meet me, and the other for my prom) to come to prom with me. He is also canceling a trip to the keys he had planned, that is like the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me...::blush::

this is true, but be careful you're delivery is good,
b/c there is nothing worse then a romantic line
turned stockish

and for all of you guys thinking
'I'm not gonna bother being romantic, that stuff never works'
just think of it this way:

some girl comes up to you w/ a flower
looks deep into ur eyes and tells you
how beautiful they are,
would YOU not go weak in the knees?

haha, OK, well, i don't know,
maybe you should know the girl 1st.
but from what i know of my experience,
it turns the guys into mush:p

try something subtlety sweet 1st
if that's the approach you wanna take,
but be careful you don't come off as a freak
if you don't even know the girl...
unless that's the impression you wanna give
which is cool, i guess:D

Koko Ed 22-04-2003 21:47

I heard from a young teacher on another team that some boys are not very adept or polite when approaching the young ladies. She was on an elevator with a boy who said to her "Yo, you have some fine a-- b-----es on your team!" To which she immediately replied "Excuse me? Number one I am a teacher. Two you will not speak to me that way and three you will refer to me as Miss!"
Needless to say the boy was quite surprised.
A little tip to you fellas
1. Make sure the girl you approach is a actually a teenager.
2. You may want to use more endearing terms than "B---es" for girls.
3. You want to make sure they appreciate your interest before speaking.
Just a few suggestions.

Jupee 27-05-2003 02:13

I wouldn't call this lame, rather I might go so far as to call them smooth...

Well, both occurred on the same day, at Midwest. Hehe, and both were from the same team (imagine that ;) ) Well I saw one of the guys who had been on this particular team and graduated two years ago. Hehe, ironically, he had also hit on my two years ago at Disney--craaazy. Anyway, when we got done talking he slipped me a card with his # and sn when he hugged me goodbye.
The other guy is friends w/ Luis, a guy on my team, and he wanted his contact info. So I, being the nice person I am, offered to go get it from him (the guy from the other team). So when I went to get it, he wrote it down on a slip of paper and he was like yeah, and you can share this with Luis (the guy on my team) if you want. I was like hehehe...sweeeeet. Needless to say, at nats I found him again and well yay:)

Kimberley Roode 29-05-2003 20:34

this is vaguely related to robotics- one day, at a meeting, a bunch of us were talking about cheesy pick up lines. one guy apparently said his favorite was "baby, if you were a car door, id slam you all night long."

a few weeks later, at competition, my friends retelling this story; she repeats the pick up line. keep in mind that a guy said it. well, when she retells it to me i mis-hear her, and think she says "baby, if you were ricky ricardo, id slam you all night long." suffice to say, i was freaked out until she realized what i must have thought and corrected me. still an ongoing joke between her and i.

talking about roses...

My friend decided to be very sweet to his girlfriend on valentines day. during brunch {which lasted 15 min] he sent his friends each with 3 roses every 3 minutes and give it to his gf. of course, the last batch was done personally.

who can be sweeter? haha
