Web Hug 2002
As we plan for the Epcot experience we need to decide how to get the BEST Web Hug ever.
I am open to any and all ideas. Place? Time? Creative experience? |
a what?
|
Web Hug
Opps!
I should explain this............ The web Hug is a meeting of all persons that uses these boards at Epcot. We have meeting to see the actual faces behind the messages. A great experience. I give a very short, very short update about the website and future plans. At the end we all gather in one large mass group hug to start the competition. This is the unifiying of the "Community of FIRST". Last year there were between 75-100 people. I plan a loud speaker (amp) this year so all can hear. My goal this year is 200 forum users. Lets have fun! I need help in the planning. |
Webhug 2002
Place: Probably needs to be a large area, there seems to be a lot of CD posters now a days and who knows how many will show up
Time: Maybe during a lunch period  Idea: Anyone remember the "Sumo" matches post from awhile back?? We could have a team (local or team going down with a trailer) rent one set of Sumo outfits (might be kinda $pricey$) and we could all vote on what 5 matches out of the ones listed that we would want to see... Personally, i think this might be a funny thing to see at the end of the whole webhug thingy :D |

I'll just be there Saturday  My team didn't qualify......but I really wanted to see some robots I've read about & the Championship matches!!......its an illness..... LisaT :) |
Someone should contact FIRST and see if they can add it to a handout they give to people. They're probably gonna give a little package to all the teams. So, include a sheet that says when this Web Hug would be.
|
Any Possibility into talking FIRST into having it during luch one day on the einstein stage?????
|
An Introduction Perhapse ?
I attended my first web hug last year and was a little disappointed only because I couldn't put names with many of the faces (except for Ken, the pink hair made it easy :)
It might be kinda' cool if we form a circle early in the webhug and quickly intoduce ourselves so we can place a face on those that we conversed with. :) |
I'll be there! I am the one in the colored t-shirt.
Good Luck All, pack your sunscreen. |
As much as I will probably get refuted for saying this...
can we please have it friday? Or maybe after rounds are over on thurs? 237's alums dont get there until mid-thurs, and if anyone wants me to deliver more cookies then the best place to do so would be at the webhug. Thats all -Jessica B |
after thursday rounds?
I've always looked forward to Web Hug at Nationals... It's one of the reason why I go to Nats every year!!!
Really great chance to meet fellow posters and see what they look like, before going around the pit looking at robots and shaking people's hands... So, we've got to get as many people for this as possible! The thing about thursday is, there are always practice round through out the day, and no lunch break... And friday is really when competition is intense, and people want to be with their team at all time... Mean while, we might need quite some time for web hug if we are going to do the introduction thing. So... I say the best time could be after thursday practice matches when everyone is done fixing the robot, and just a little bit before Dinner. That way, some of us can even decide to go out to dinner together if we want to. Any time after that is just too much trouble for everyone... What do you think? |
200 people at 10 seconds an introduction means 33 minutes of introductions.
Anywho, I look foward to the webhug. After rounds on Thursday sounds like a good time to me. Lunch I'm kinda wavery on...If I don't eat then, I wont eat at all prolly. Just my copper. |
what about a morning??
I remember last year, I think it was on that Saturday morning before the opening ceremonies, that there were many people not doing much and dancing in front of the Einstein Stage. That could be a good time, or perhaps Friday morning. Just some ideas, but unless a team is doing some desperate changes to their robot at those times, most people won't be too busy.
|
From the caveman talk to Adam:
"Morning bad, afternoon gooood" I say name tags shall do nicely, and I'm sure there are some of us who will be recognized with our absurdly colored hair... |

Instead of introductions how about really big name tags? (Like 3" lettering =) )

Web Hug...
I'll be there...look for the cheeseheads!! lol :D
|
Name tags are good. I like the idea of having the web hug on Thursday. If it is in the evening it would allow for a bit more time to talk to each other and there is always the option to go somewhere after the hug. I think the fliers that were handed out last year were helpful and I think that same place near the trees was a good place to have the web hug.
|
ill be with ya in spirit. Hope you all have some fun down there:p

How about a wee bit before the end of practices, so teams that may vamoose right after everyone's done for the day can still participate? Just make sure it runs on after as well for people that may have to be on a field at the time.
|
I'm a fan of the typical noon on Thursday.. or morning on Thursday..
I wouldn't venture off into the other days because as everyone mentioned, they are a bit more intense. Friday morning everyone is coming in, trying to get the match schedule and get going.. Saturday many people in picking positions are busy with planning.. Plus, the webhug is our little 'kickoff' to the days.. so when you see those familiar faces on Friday & Saturday you can greet your fellow forum users. I'd also vote against Thursday night also, because if teams are still sticking around by the time they are over, it's likely only because they have one of the last matches or many repairs in the pits... Thursday night we like to leave as early as we can to have a relaxing night to prep in (dinner, team meeting, and the ever important volleyball). Just my thoughts.. :) See you there if it's during a plausible time! If not.. I'm around.. don't be afraid to stop by and see us if you need any assistance, advice, or just want to check us out :P Let's have some fun. |
I to would also have to place my vote for the Thursday 12 noon webhug. ALthough some people may not be able to make it. It may very well be the easiest and most logical time to have it.
just my input Brian |
Thursday
I'll be sure to come whenever it's held (unless of course I have to drive the robot right at that time). I also think Thursday would be the best day and noon should be a good time.
I'll try to bring 200 or so buttons with me - so if you recognize me at Webhug, ask me for a Firestorm 4 button. |
im in...i have the purple hair...i think ima be easy to spot
|
im in, thursday sounds good, but depending on when our practice times are, or if we have the gearbox repaired by then I might not make it
|
so the idea i'm getting from this is thursday at noon...?
Sounds good, now...where? Where have y'all had it in the past? |
i'll be there depending on if there is gonna be that scoring meeting/ software handout. i'll do my darndest to come to the webhug this year!!!
|
too many things at once :p
|
I vote for the Thursday noon webhug. I think that would work better than an evening or morning or Friday or Saturday time.
|
web hug??
ok well this is my first time at nationals. So what exactly do you guys do at a web-hug?? Regardless if you look at the shed. itz best to have it thursday
|
The Big Hug (sounds like a 7-11 drink...only better)
I vote for Thursday night after the last practice rounds. Most everyone is ready for a break at that point and there will be no time limit (other than fatigue) to end the hug.
Ken Loyd ps. How many Ken's will be there? |
I agree with Ken Loyd on this one...that's the only time I can think of that I'd be able to make it...
|
I liked Thursday at noon as well.
Once we have our last practice round, we're going to split (lickety-like) and make way to the parks. I suspect others may do the same. |
Thursday noon...
sounds good to me... Did anyone decide where to hold this thing? :points to the grassy knoll: |
thursday night after practice works best for me. Too much chaos going on during the day with robot work and practice rounds.
- Patrick |
sounds like a good idea. i just hope the person in the middle doesnt get hurt.
|
has a time been set yet, or has all propr posts been like chit chat. I would like to do it, but one person, maybe you Mike Martus, and set the day and time
|
I agree with Perseus. When and where is it going to be?
I'm excited about that, since now I'm going to Orlando!!! |
Web Hug FINAL Details - Please plan
After reading all the responses and considering all the possibilities, and understanding that all conditions cannot be met I have decided on the following. I hope that this works out well for most people.
Day: Thursday Time: 6:00 pm (after practice rounds) Where: Grassy knoll - located between the pit tents and the entrance pathway to Epcot (where the busses let you off). We will be under a cool tree. Look for the orange " Chief Delphi" flag. I will be passing out flyers - ORANGE- to all pits as a reminder. I will ask for an announcement regarding a meeting of chiefdelphi forum users. I will ask that this be done several times near the end of the day. I will have several awards to pass out. If you are not there, I will get it to you. As far as name tags: I always wear an ID badge because I know I am terrible with names myself. Please make/wear one. Be creative - design a special tag with your name ( the one we all see on the web site) as well as your real name. Depending on the amount of people, introductions may not be possible. I will dream up another way. This will be great! See you there. If you have time stop by team 47 pit. I am usually there. GO FIRST! |
Think we could do it on Einstein? That would make a cool picture.
|
Eienstien
Not possible. I asked already.
|
you're great!
This is my first time at the nationals and I'm only there because I really wanted to go...
My team registered too late, so we can't go with the team, but me and one girl from our team will be there to represent Vermont's only team... And I'll definitely come to the web-hug, sounds great to me... So long guys (and girls)... |
Manoel and I went 10 minutes late to the webhug, so we just had time to be in the picture. And I would like to know when are you guys going to upload the "chiefdelphi.com picture". I can't wait to see that. :)
It was very fun. So bad I didn't took my guitar to Epcot that day. |
post of pic
This will take several days, sorry. the camera is packed in the trailer and it will not be available until Thur.
I will do as soon as possible. |
Sorry I couldn't make it guys!! During our last practice match, our light kept cutting out and we found out one of the terminals on the light relay was loose. So I was replacing that during the time of the web-hug. Oh well :( I'll catch everyone next year!!
- Katie |
If you go to the 'Picture Gallery' under 2002 Championship you will see the Web Hug picture I took.
Wayne Doenges |
11 others are now in that gallery as well.
|
uh. what?
|
Every year at Nationals (well ... every year for the past two years!) the people from the Chief Delphi forums get together - to actually meet each other in person!!
Here is one of the pictures from the webhug this past year (there are some more in the 2002 Championships gallery) I couldn't go because I was busy fixing speed controllers :( Oh well - there's always next year! - Katie |

I think there have been Web Hugs for the past four years (1999-2002). I only can guess this since I've was at the 2000-2002 ones and there seems to have been one before it. Then again, back then there was time to introduce yourself to everyone.
Matt |
I have to wonder if I'd WANT to meet anyone from here...
*thinks for a second* It'd be fun :) |
