Cool design :) Does your end pvc part rotate independent of the arm? What's the hinge on top for? Our design is a fairly similar idea. Looks great!

Looks like a spring-loaded door hinge to me. If you look carefully at the arm under the hinge there appear to be little hooks to hold the grabber-arm down. I'm guessing that the grabber-arm starts folded up to fit in the box, then depolys with the spring when the match starts. We talked about something like this but ended up not needing it.

it is spring-loaded, pops out after start for dimensions
