If you could change one thing....
Well the deadline has come and gone, the robots are packed and shipped and everybody is catching their collective breaths and waiting to go to their respsective regionals.
So what is the one thing you would have liked to have done differently this past build season? |

I personally would have preffered to have gotten all the brainstorming and design work out of the way atleast a week earlier then it was finished. Even thought I didn't like how long it took though, I'm glad we thought the design through mostly without jumping headlong into it.

I SO WISH that we could have made a different type of grabbing device. our grabber lets the tetra swing too much. so you have to let the robot sit for a second to let the tetra to stop swinging.

Not tried to save money on a few components by waiting to see if better/free source became available. Most notably, with the aluminum stock that the robot was built with. We really lost a week of build because of that.

i would eliminate the second joint in the arm, make it telescoping, we are having so much trouble with breaking window motors its rediculous.

It was somewhere about midway through (I could look it up if I were really motivated)...
...see, 1293 meets Tuesday, Thursday, and all day Saturday. Saturday, there was a bunch of ice on the roads, cancelling practice. Then Tuesday, we didn't get anything done, since our mentor who is responsible for a slew of mind-blowing things on our robot had a work emergency. Then finally, Thursday night with about half an hour left, we finally got a bunch of things to do. So yeah, we functionally lost a week. And I wish I could've changed that. |

While for me this relates more to the chairman's award, but it could relate to any team for robots I'd say the thing I wish I'd have changed was spent just a bit more time in the lab/classroom brainstorming in the beginning, and THEN had a good strong work schedule instead of a lot of stuff that was done closer to the end.
True, individually and as a team there may still have been rush at the end, but I feel like the editting and little things near the end would have been more need specific and having a workable whatever earlier would have been a teensy bit less stressful than those awesomely fun late night moments. Then again, I wouldn't give those for anything, so procrastination on any level is a win-lose situation :) - Genia |

I'm extremely happy with how our actual robot came out, mechanically, but there are some general problems that we had in the electrical/programming side, and other ways.
First, we lost about half of a week due to midterms right after kickoff, and secondly, I wish we had gotten the robot done a little earlier so as to have more time to work on autonomous. Pretty good build season though, especially compared to last year, where tons of things went wrong. |

I would have loved to make our arm gripper a bit better, We got the height, but our forklift arm could be better designed

One of our main engineers had to go to Austrilia halfway through build, putting a lot more stress on the others. I wish I could change that.
All in all it was a pretty good build season, because the only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is I wish we could have gotten the side plates water jet cut instead of laser cut, because then we could have used our cool hammerhead designs. |

well we had a flood half-way through the build season...not good. we had to transfer all our stuff into a closet, then back into the basement...lost a week and a half :ahh:

Can't think of just one thing that would have helped big time. As with all complex problems there are lots of solutions. I guess that pushing harder sooner might have helped. And our school instructor had no idea of the time commitment, and so we moved into our pottery studio at home. We had some expected machining help fall way short in terms of time and accuracy. But we also found some new shops willing to donate work, water jetting saved our bot. And our long distance mentor, really came through big time this year. Thanks so much, Larken!!!
Still have some things to plan for and challenges to solve at the Buckeye Regional. |

I would not change anything on our robot; I would have liked to see more student involvement. It gets disappointing some nights when few kids show up.

We had a GREAT season. Best robot I've ever had the pleasure of working on. Most student involvement of ANY year I've been in FIRST. GREAT group of kids -- incredible group dynamic. Plenty of support from "home" and "significant other" (even when I'm grumpy and stressed) which makes the build WAY more fun. We were able to help several of our "friend" teams, which is nice. We helped out some rookie teams, which was VERY fulfilling. Overall, we just grew as individuals, and as a team. I just can't stop myself from babbling about how happy I am. Everything just started falling into place. This season is definitely a high note for me. Many Kudos to Clarkson Junior, former X-Cat, and team leader extrordinaire Adrienne Emerson for running such a tight ship. Ader - you're WAY better at this than I was. Let's hope the "good feelings" stay with us through regionals... ;) John *knocks on wood* |

(sorry we still haven't posted a *finished* product... be patient, its coming soon, i promise! :)) and we just got a lot done! :) I guess instead of focusing on the stuff we wish we could have changed, we should focus on all of the wonderful stuff we accomplished instead! instead of saying "ugh, i wish this hadnt broken" or "why did the weather have to go funky like that and mess us up", why not say "wow! i cant believe that even though that really important part broke, we still managed to fix it!" or "dispite that horrible weather we've been having, we managed to actually finish the robot in due time! and even if things look their gloomies and their worst, and everything went wrong, you can at least say, "hey, at least we tried, and we learned a lot from this experience!" |

Well I think I would have liked to have everything mesh better the gearboxes at best were jerry rigged only thing holding the shafts in was the setscrew on the gear which was held in by the spacers between bearings and the gear. Plus I think we decided the 1/2" steel rod that rotates for our arm is bent a little. It didn't shear through the aluminum 4"x4" tube? Well thats it.

I'd skip getting pneumonia and spending 12 days of last two weeks of the build in the hospital. Kind of shot a big hole in the build schedule.

In a few instances, there were dicisions made as to the design of my team's robot that were not carefully considered. The best features seem to be the ones whose design was vehemently discussed between students and between mentors. On the other hand, the parts that needed work or failed were most often ones that were not aggressively debated.
I think much grief with design problems could have been avoided by working with more people reviewing ideas and by _paying attention to detail_. |

I'd have tried a bit harder to avoid getting fired from my job because of the late nights spent working at the lab -- only a tiny bit harder, though.
Am I the first person to become unemployed because of dedication to FIRST? |

For us, it was a few things. I wish we had spent less time brainstorming and arguing about ideas and actually get a design and build it. I also wish that we had more time to redesign our grabbing device after we discovered that the claw we had made did not work effectively. And finally, I wish the team had given the programmers and I more time with the camera and not even really try to use it. It was still a fun season though.

I wish that we were able to get more sponsers. Each member on our team has to pay their way to each compition, thats not cool at all.

I have also lost my job as well. But it's not like i miss it or anything. This is much better work, even though we arnt getting "payed" now we will in the long run!!

I wish we could have done something witha little pizzaz! I mean some of the new engineers and even 2 old, kept telling he kids to think simple and basic. Btu that isnt relaly how we run we always do something that makes us stand out in some way or another even if we dont' work. But this year, looking at all the other robot pictures I have seen, we will probably blend in with most others. With this being my senior year I just wish we oculd have done something special just to keep in memorable rather then the basic telescoping arm with virtually a hook and a non-shift transmission. It is just so mundane, I wanted to make something that jumped out at you and caught your eye. Instead on the picture we have uploaded the most comments we gotwere for our battery mount... :confused:

I really wish we had more time debugging code. We really haven't tested out autonomous yet because the robot wasn't built until about 4 or 5 days before ship date.

It seems I agree with the most of you...
Our chassis seemed to be finished at about the time our ROBOT was finished last year... this created a slew of problems. Though our robot is working well, we were still drilling to get underweight twenty minutes before fed-ex came. Too must brainstorming, not enough efficiency and building. |

I wish I had had the discipline to keep my hands off the keyboard and teach more students about the programming. I couldn't get confident enough in my abilities to explain things well enough for someone else to implement what we needed to have done in the available time.
We do have a project planned using the mini-RC to run a motorized cart with funky steering. For that I will act only as a resource and have the students do absolutely all the coding. |

I would change the fact that we had finals the next week after kick-off. It's not exactly convenient when you feel the sudden urge to draw a potential robot design on your Biology Final. Also, transportation seemed to be difficult this year, we couldn't quite get people to stay late. Those are just some minor problems - as far as building goes, I wouldn't change anything.

Of course, there is always some wish that everything had gone smoothly and perfectly, but in the long run, I think overcoming obstacles together builds a stronger team. Sometimes lessons learned the hard way are the best lessons learned.
I do wish I could have changed the amount of stress and frustration everyone went through, especially our animation team (I'm not going to go into their nightmare). I like everyone to be happy, and it bothers me to see people upset, which is kind of hard to avoid during the crazy six weeks of build. Heidi |

The conceptual design process took too long without getting much done. Too much work was put on one student who knew Inventor very well. The arm mount and "end effector" were not thought about carefully enough. If the HexaMax transmissions work well, we will go smaller and lighter next year. Also we spent way too much time on design yet we still ended up hand drilling lots of holes and hand fabricating lots of parts. Last, the robot lacks color.
Hopefully all these issues will be addressed next year. :) |

As far as the build goes, I think our robot was very good....especially compared to last year when the only thing we had working was the drivetrain. I wish we could have finished our work on the autonomous period, but unfortunately, we had some major team issues two days before shipping. I wish we had mentors like some of the ones described here. Our mentors did nothing but stand around talking about work like they didn't want to be there, criticize new ideas that students came up with and think of every possible reason why it will not work.
Lastly, and worst of all, two days before shipping, all of our mentors refused to stay past the scheduled end time (6:30 PM), which we knew was necessary if we wanted an autonomous period. Our lead/only programmer and I (President) came back later that night intending to finish up the autonomous period, which was necessary if we wanted to have any chance of winning; however, one of the mentors showed up because of suspicion and was extremely angry about us being there. He literally took the robot hostage to his house, cancelled most of the meeting time the next day (because he was at work and couldn't bring the robot back), just to prevent us from working on the robot any more that night. Because we were told not to come back, the team now did not have any code written (our programmer had it all). So, the night before shipping, all of the mentors start to realize that they are in trouble without the code, so they worked until 1:30 AM on the morning of shipping to get some basic drive code to work. So, while our mentors put family over finishing the autonomous period, they obviously cared about the drive code. Hopefully next year, we'll have either better mentors or no mentors at all. This year they only hindered the progress of the students. |

i wish we could have found a better joystick for the arm or at least have microsoft be a little more user friendly and compatible with the FIRST electronics. Other than that this year was the best our team has had yet. For once we didn't have to pull 3 straight all nighters and find out the robot doesn't work at the competion.

The following events are pieced together from the observations I was able to make while running back and forth between the computer lab and the robot lab. Some details may be a little off, but the heart of the story is there. First, the disclaimer: our animation team is composed of about a dozen students this year, up from the three that did it last year. The two returning student animators from last year – Steven and Tristan – created their own Autodesk software course and taught their compatriots the software all on their own. They run the entire show. No adults provide any assistance – none of us even know the software. As things came down to the final 96 hours, our animation team was all set to start rendering the final version of the animation they had been developing for the past six weeks. They had made special arrangements to use the computer lab, and had a 70-node render farm established and ready to go. They had the system all set up and ready to knock about the 900 frames of animation with an expected 3000 hours of computer time. A "start rendering" deadline was set for 7:00pm on Friday … which came and went. First the render farm computers couldn’t find the textures embedded in the images. They worked this for several hours until we got thrown out of the school when it closed down. The first signs of "will we make it?" worries began to creep in. With special permission, they were back at 7:00 Saturday morning. Some of the renders started, but then the render farm couldn’t find the full scenes. The network wasn’t properly converting the aliases into the actual locations for the model and texture files. After a few screams of anguish, they started to manually convert the file names and restart the process on all 70 machines. Then as the models began to render again, the network choked once again on the file references that still were not converting properly. Slightly more screaming. Steven plugged his personal machine in to the network to serve the models to the rest of the render farm. Then they had to segment the entire job and manually command each node on the farm to start chewing through the first scene, six frames at a time. The only way to get everything done in time at this point was to make the anguishing decision to drop some items and some details, over which they had poured days of effort, from the final animation, and keep their fingers crossed that it would be done in time. So they started things up again, just in time to get thrown out of the school again late Saturday night. Return at 7:00 Sunday morning to manually queue up more frames on the render farm. Everything seemed to be working, and like they might make it – until 11:00am. That is when the central server on the school network crashed. The main G Drive on the whole system goes down – hard. The I.T. tech support guy, who happens to be at the school, says it has overheated, and they need to call in their service contractor to get it up and running again. That is not a problem – except it is a holiday weekend and the rules do not allow him to place the call until it is passed through the county I.T. office on Tuesday morning. Oh yeah, and the G Drive is where all of the second scene happened to be stored. This time, MUCH more anguished screaming. Spend hours trying to find any fragments of the animation on any local machines. Then figure out how to reconstruct as many of the models and textures as possible from those versions – which were several days old. Find out how to drop some of the textures from the scene without destroying the models. Re-create others. Watch the clock, because we are getting thrown out of the building again at 6:00pm. Manually queue up all 70 machines to run as many individual frame renders as possible overnight. Back at 6:30am Monday morning. A reasonable estimate of the rendering progress says they need another 500 hours of computer time. That is not including the frames that have to be re-rendered because somewhere in the network confusion a few hundred frames were rendered at low resolution and cannot be used. The animation team is on the edge at this point. The "will we make it?" worries morphed into "there is no flippin’ way we will finish, is there?" questions. All practical estimates of the work to be done result in a "no" answer to that question. But everyone jumps in and works to find a way out. Pull in a few more personal computers. Manually recover individual textures from old model files. Piece things together that were never designed to be combined. Dump everything onto Steven’s pseudo-server. Drop some details from the rendering, and one short scene, and then create new ones to preserve the quality of the final animation. Manually segment the rendering queue again. Collect the frames as rapidly as they can be finished. They have permission to be in the school until 9:00pm, due to a basketball game in the gym. But the game ends early, the school closes earlier than expected, with crucial frames unfinished. Aauugghh! Hunt down the custodians and beg and plead for an extra 30 minutes – "You can just start closing the building from the other end, can’t you? And get to the computer lab last?" It works! The partial render finishes, and they take what they have. Take them over to the house and dump the collected frames on one machine. Run the compositing software, test the codec output quality, drop in the audio tracks, and create the final version. Then keep trying until 4:30 in the morning to upload the final product to the Buzzsaw server to submit it – which takes at least three tries to get a valid version that can be downloaded properly. Through it all, they never gave up. There were a few times that were close, but they refused to throw in the towel and admit defeat. With each new obstacle there were a few screams of anguish, but then they went ahead and pounded their heads against the problem until they found a way out. They improvised. They overcame. They persevered. And they succeeded. They proved they were ready to deal with the sort of real problems that a production graphics shop has to overcome. They behaved like professionals, and kept to their commitment to deliver a professional-quality, complete product without compromising their standards. I cannot remember being more proud of a group of students with which I have been associated. So what would I change about this season and their experiences? Not one single thing. -dave |

Lavery stories always rock! This one, however, captures the essence of the FIRST experience down deeper than most. Chaos is supposed to occur. How everyone reacts is the question. When you have the rare opportunity to be a part of the kind of team Dave just described, hang onto that experience and love every minute of it. There is no feeling greater than being a part of a group that would walk through fire with you. Complete commitment, complete trust, and total respect. The future is definately in good hands.

Well luckily we have a month to do coding and stuff planning what we have to do to make a running robot win? add support and hold downs for meshing gears don't bind. Thats about it good luck to all and the L.A. area your gonna run for your money. |

I wish we could have stored tetras in our arm since our arm is definitely strong enough... we thought it wouldn't have enough torque but that thing lifts up the Center goal!
I wish we could have actually gotten autonomous to execute so i could have tested runned, the 5000 lines of "theoretical " autonomous code i had written.... lavery i know all those darn animation woes.... i hate leaving stuff overnight and coming back to find some wrong resolution or missing textures etc... but hey it always somehow works in the end... |

Dave, that is a great story. Mad props to the 116 animation team! A product is always better when people sweat over it.
Overall, for us, I wish that there was another Inventor guy on my team. For the second year in a row, I got stuck doing it all. Also, I wish we had more time for the programmers, they still have a ways to go, and I regret having them to stay up so late. See everyone at regionals, Daniel |

hookd up arm on both sides so weight isnt relying on one sproket on one side
and make the steel bar part of our robot aluminum, otherwise we're good |

I wish we had thought more about the end of our arm. If it hadn't been the day before we had to ship we could have put a bigger gear and had much more power. I think we'll end up shortening the arm to give it more power. :ahh:

We deffinatley could have used more time to do autonomus, we quite literally had 4 hours to test the code our programmer had been writing, as thats when we had a completed robot to test on :rolleyes:

Probably would have spent more time before building to get a final design, and not worried so much about money. We spent less than $1000 on the whole robot, building everything we needed ourselves (students). Maybe would have gotten our mentors more involved...though they helped a lot. All in all, I'm very proud of our team and grateful for all the help our mentors gave us. For a rookie team I think we handled it very well. Oh yeah... I think more autonomous work would have helped.

I wish we would have utilized our kids time at the site better. Because X-WhAAAt is such a simple robot and the team worked so efficiently we were able to build a competition robot and a practice robot but it also left the kids with alot of idle time that they used to either hang out or horse around and there were things to be done (like cleaning, creating a new Hall of Fame display and making a new video for the Hall of Fame display). I bet it won't be a problem next year.

This is in addition to Dave's story. Halfway into the day we found out the XP pro could only have 10 simultaneous connections, XP Home 5, and 2000 professional 10. After finding this out we decide to use all the personal computers there to be servers to render. I then remembered that I had 2000 Advanced on a CD at home (aren't ITT Tech licenses great?). Come midnight my hard drive decides to crash while installing it. So I reformat, use my comp. as a server the next day, and pray it doesn't explode from having 70 simultaneous connections into it :yikes: .

We had one of those mentors too. Nothing ever seemed good enough for him and every time we had a meeting he would come in with some new idea he had thrown together the night before. We have a whole box of the "plan C's" he built because he didn't think what the students were doing was going to work. He even brought in some 8" balloon tires he bought at Tractor Supply with 60 tooth sprockets thinking we should use them on the robot...they weighed about 3 pounds apiece! And every time we had a meeting he would nay say just about everything. "are you sure that will work?" with an evil grin.
The whole point of FIRST is to allow the students to find out what works or not and if it doesn't we should fix it ourselves, right? I have to admit, this mentor was a genius, he had worked for NASA, actually wrote some of the programming for Voyager...a real-life rocket scientist, but he could have been a little less involved. Or just shut up! A few weeks into the project, though, he had to leave the team for a long business trip and secretly we all rejoiced (which I do feel a bit guilty about, but just a tiny bit). But that isn't supposed to happen...our team shouldn't dislike a mentor so much that they are happy when he leaves. I guess thats just what happens when you get so many smart people together in one place. Anyhow...without him we built a working robot all without using his "plan C's"...and secretly we are all happy we proved him wrong. It may not be right, but there are some people teams can just do without. I completely understand what you mean. |
