I am our school's marching/concert band. I play the baritone. I am not going to Phoenix this year because of it (We are playing the full Lord of the Rings Suite - the "symphony for band" - at a concert on that Saturday). Hard music, but really, really cool.

yes, I do, although my band has practices during the day. and it has musical orchestra practices from around 7-11 pm in the fall, so it doesn't coincide with robotics.
i never realized the trend between robotics and band though...

Our band did a Hero's Themed show, playing: Rocky Theme, Shaft Theme, MI6 (James Bond spin off rewritten as a drum solo by our staff), and Armed Forces Salute...We were gonna do Prince of Theives but ran out of time... Our band got a I at festvile this fall, w00t!

This is cool, I never knew that there were so many instrumentalists in robotics! Man, It would be cool to be in a high stepping band!

Re: Band/Robotics

Hey I'm in band at my school too, we are in concert season right now so most of our rehearsal time is during the school day. We are about to start sectionals, so thankfully that didnt interrupt build season. Last year I did have an issue because spring contest was on the same day that our regional was, so I had to miss Lone Star, but that's not an issue this year. I prefer marching season in the fall though, its more fun. I am a senior and the shows we have done are Jimmy Buffett (my favorite), Motown, West Side Story, and this year our show was Santana. I am a trumpet player, and we have a reputation for being cocky, but hey, when you're the best, why not show it right? Jk, lol. And I dont know about the high-stepping band thing...

Yessss! I definitely am in band and robotics.. I was joking with someone about a week ago about how I pretty much don't have a life outside of band and robotics :p

Overall, band hasn't conflicted THAT much with robotics... I had to miss a couple days for an honor band a couple weeks ago, we cancelled a meeting because of the orchestra concert (a bunch of band people played it in for full symphony too, so most of the team was in the concert lol), and the band pops concert conflicted with a regional we were considering going to (but I think it was the first weekend of spring break, so it probably wouldn't have worked anyway..), but overall I think I juggle them quite nicely :p

-we're playing "Gandalf" from the Lord of the Rings Suite in band right now... I agree, really good songs, but tricky music (although I'd have to say my bass drum and crash cymbals part isn't too challenging  )

That sounds like some fun music, I'd like to play stuff like that but our director isnt really in to playing movie music...Right now we're working on some songs called Where Never Lark nor Eagle Flew, His Eye is on the Sparrow (an arrangement that was made for us), and El Camino Real. The program is borderline on our max time for contest. My favorite thing we've ever played though was last year when we played Of Sailors and Whales

Re: Band/Robotics

The LOTR suite was actually not written for the movie. It was originally composed for the books. Good thing we're doing this concert combined with the community college; we wouldn't be able to play this on our own.

The coolest song outside of this that we've played is probably the New World Symphony, again hard but cool

Trumpets. . Always think they're so high and mighty. ;)

My high school band does the high steps now. They didn't when I was there but it looks pretty sweet.

Re: Band/Robotics

Our band did high steps for part of one song in our fall show, and I thought it looked pretty good (most of the band hated it though..) ..however, being a member of the drumline, I was exempt from the high stepping business  Us bass drummers are all about the sideways crab walk :D

Re: Band/Robotics

I did Choir for 4 years while I did robotics...does that count a little?

Since I came to college, I must admit I haven't kept up with it, and I've moved from being a second soprano to a first soprano with a lot of comfort in the high alto range.

I was also a theatre dork, but once again college got to be way too much to do while doing a show and FIRST at once.

I'm in band, and the class is awesome haha. I play the flute at lunch during class and fumble with the camera after school. Wow what an interesting life I lead :(

All hail the lower brass. I'm from Cody's school. I was once a trumpet player, and a baritonist, and now I play the trombone in our jazz band and play the baritone parts in concert band. I'm glad to hear there are so many other band students in robotics. And that having no life thing.............. Yeah.................... That's me. Also, Cody forgot Bercuice and Finale, Excerpts from The Firebird Suite, by Igor Stravinski. That was from the myths and legends show.

Re: Band/Robotics

I play flute for concert band, and piano for jazz band, and piano for a jazz trio. Next year, I'll be playing flute for symphonic, piano for jazz, and I'm trying to get our band director to let me get a huge battery, keyboard, and an amp onto the sidelines for marching next year. We're playing stuff from the swing era, so it wouldn't be complete without a keyboard!

Not to mention I also play sax and bassoon if ever needed.
