Stock Frame...
Just a quick question to all the teams...who out there used the stock frame material on their robot? If so, how well does it hold up?

If you're talking about some sort of bar or square stock, our team used welded aluminum 1" square stock with 1/8" walls, and it is stronger than we could've ever imagined. The bot has 36" lengths of which you can stand in the middle and have no deflection. Overall, the square stock treated us very well, and we remarkably easy to use.

Ah, the kitbot.
1293 went kitbot this year. We've got almost exclusively new people driving it so far (and, even worse, me driving it), and it's held up so far. Then again, we haven't been taking brick walls out. If I remember right, there's video of Paul Copioli's four-or-so-year-old driving the kitbot around. That should be proof enough. |

We used the kitbot chasis too, but the arm team wanted to cut the front bar off of the chasis after we loctited the whole chasis, so a guy had to go into it and cut out a part using an angle grinder, and after that day...it has been horribly bending inward...The kitbot chasis is good to use if you don't tweak it that much.

We've taken the kitbot through some crash test courses (Not really), we've had our rookies drive, it, I've driven it like I stole the thing, it's held up very nicely. When I saw the extensiveness of the cheese holing during kickoff, I thought that thing would be flimsy, but hey, it's held up (no dents, but many scratches). Too bad we're not using it, the chassis we sent in looks unreliable (it hasn't been field tested, at all)

We ummm cut the frame up and used the metal for various brackets and braces for our arm, For our frame well we built a tank. :ahh:

we originally decided it looks a bit flimsey (as compared to 1/4 inch steel tubes....) and it has been converted into our trolley...

We put kitbot together, but it twisted around and was flimsy. We decided to use it for are OI controler's frame, but that was twisting the longer it stayed together. I am personally glad that we didn't use it.

We are using the kit bot frame and have had minor troubles but nothing that could not be solved and we do not have the second angle in the frame or the large bumper up front.

We are using the stock frame with some fiberglass additions, our turret is mounted to it's own frame that is bolted to the main frame. It flexes but that is what we wanted. Still have to finish a few things up at Buckeye. Drive testing went well, lots of tire spin with the stock tires.

We used the kit frame material with welded joints instead of bolting it together and welded 1" box on top for the superstructure. That stiffened it up nicely. Had no problems with it at our regional.

We used the kitbot, and the gearbox too. In fact, all we did was switch to 6" wheels and move them up for lower ground clearance. It is awesome, and let us drive by the second week. It as enough twist to be good. You want all four wheels driving all the time, so a little warpage is good.

We used the kitbot stuff for our cart. Our bot was made from 2"x3" 1/4" wall thickness rectangular aluminum tubing. It was heavy, so a little mill work, and we got underweight. But the bot still looks small without the lexan on.

Team 549 used the kitbot frame this year, but added a 1" aliminum extrusion frame on top. We havn't had any problems with it (we took some very hard hits and also gave a few at BAE). i know of a couple teams there that had problems with theres twisting.

team 1155 is building our new dolly for the robot out of it. not to be elitists or anything we just needed a new dolly and ran out of the aluminum we had used on the robot

Team 350 used the stock kitbot chassis, and we defenitly had some hard hits, as we played defense for eliminations through finals. After the match the front end was bent inwards a little, but overall it held up really well.

I noticed the Kit bot chassis suffered from rigidity problems at first. Then I read the instructions and saw that the other bits of aluminum where stiffeners :o , and they did help considerably. The kit bot chassis is great for rookie teams, and veteran teams alike looking to get ahead in the production phase. We built the kit bot in a few hours and handed it to the programmers so that they could begin to wire and program the robot for testing. They where able to test the camera's tracking ability, and other important features. It also kept the programmers out of our hair...for a while. Eventually they wanted to know things like, "Are we gonna need a pot on that, are we going to need to limit the movement with programming". Programmers..can't live with em, and you can't live with out em. We ended up using 3x1 extruded aluminum box tubing. All in all out chassis turned out pretty good, and very robust.

We used it a base. We welded the kitbot material and bolted our super structure to the frame. We noticed during practice that it deformed. For that reason we will bring our frame staightener to the regionals.

I'm working on a 25lb deadblow frame straightner. :D If you forget yours, I should have mine built and ready for action in a few weeks.

We used the KOP Chassis and Grearboxes with 2 CIM motors and it works great. We did add some 2" angle that attached through all four channels to strengthen the base of our arm and the drivetrain, but it is really strong. We are really happy witht he KOP this year.
