Watching movies online --Legally--
 
I have been looking into different sites that offer legal downloads and streaming for watching movies online. I'd like to be able to download DVD quality movies and be able to own them. What kind of services have some of you used or which ones to stay away from?


I do not want to see anything about illegal downloading methods and ways of obtaining movies of any way like it.

Mods and everyone else:
I would like to ask that any posts containing illegal suggestions be deleted and the posters be docked heavily in negative rep points.

I tried Movielink.com once. It was alright. I'm not sure if it's a monthly or a per-movie charge.
I did have some problems with their software though. Also, it can only use WMP, which is a pain in the butt.

I know it's not online, but if you can deal with only getting three DVD's at a time, and them taking around two days to get to you, Netflix is an awesome service. If you get like even 6 movies in one month, the subscription pays for itself.

We've had it (back home) for probably a year now, and I LOVE it.

Yeah, I loved Netflix when I had it. I got maybe 10 movies a month. Definitely worth it.

I got a free redemption for a free movie off of some site once, I think movielink.com. Overall, it was ok, but the software was Windows only, proprietary, and you could only watch the movie in their software. Add this to long download times, and I would say I wouldn't waste my time with online movies until something easier and simpler comes out.

I was able to get about 5 free movies out of them because of a Airline promotion... they had very little selection

I actaully read an online article that stated if a subscriber got more than 12 movies per month, Netflix actually lost money due to postage and the such. It was a slashdot article about a week ago. I'll try to find it.

To be honest, I think most movie download services are utterly worthless.

The download time often takes nearly forever, and heavy restrictions are placed upon the content. The movies themselves can be low quality - and the fact that I'm forced to use a propietary player is extremely vexing.

I far prefer the speed and the ease of use of Netflix; DVDs arrive in 2-3 days, the quality is superb. No restrictions are placed on the content - and I'm free to play it on the player of my choice.

I'm not sure if you're still interested since this thread is nearly a year old, but rumor has it that Apple might be adding a "film store feature" to its iTunes program.

Question is, is the selection going to be as limited as their TV selections and how much is it going to end up costing... Also, this is my gripe with Apple VS Google video... We pay for the content, why should be we limited to the iPod size video from apple? I just wish they would give the full res download AND the iPod version. It's the same content, why not? Why? Beacuse they could probably get away with charging more for the full res. Gotta love how things work...
