Re: Predictions for BAE Regional?

So with most of the practice day over, what does everyone look like, and who looks the best now? I will be up there Saturday, as well as about 10 other members of my team.

Sorry for the side question, but for those who were at the regional, how many practice matches are teams getting? Any word on how many qualifying matches? Thanks.

I talked to Scott Shaw of team 237 (at finger lakes), and in the timeframe of 10 AM - 4 PM they got 10 practice rounds (5 times up with 2 matches per time).

I predict teams going the UTC New England regional will be well supported in the audience, incognito of course. :D

This is one of the toughest regionals and because of this year's game design I think rattling off the typical "favorites" isn't necessary. My thought is that there will be a lot of heart-breakers in the elims with close scores, and at least one elim match-up will be decided on penalties.

I gotta say though I'm pulling for 121 after what they went through last year coming so close, twice I think, I hope they can pull it off this year.

Digression: This year's game is a much better spectator game than I thought it would be, because the scoring is easy to explain to the non-FIRSTers out there, and there is a lot of on-field action.

My picks:

126, 1276, 133.

Dzdconfusd:

I must disagree with you in the strongest way. Simple? How could you call this year's scoring simple, with all the ramifications of penalties, tic-tac-toes, disqualified touching tetras, robot disablings, et cetera? Au contraire, this is by far the most complex game I have seen in my three years in F.I.R.S.T. I predict that it will be very difficult to predict the winner of the match. In previous years, it was relatively easy. This year, with all the penalties and everything, I think it will be extraordinarily difficult.

Re: Predictions for BAE Regional?

I this years scoring is simple based on the "human factor". It passes the criteria of can I explain how the scoring works to my mother and she gets it immediatly. For the last two years, this is my 3rd as a mentor, when I tried to explain how the scoring works with multipliers and some of the other more slightly eccentric way things are written people who just walk in or are unfamilier with FIRST just sort of got a blank look on their face. This year I can say 1 point for a tetra in the goal, 3 for a tetra on top, 10 for a "tic-tac-toe". and 10 for all robots in your color zone. People can understand this better than total the number of boxes subtract the hieght of the tallest stack and multiply by it, and last year although I loved the game outside people never seemed to know who won. Most of them seemed to think hanging on the bar was an automatic win, they didn't understand you could out score the other alliance with small balls.

This year anyone who just walks in can quickly figure out the raw score on their own. I don't track penalties because:
A.) I think everyone rarely sees the flags thrown because they are following on field action.
B.) The MC always seems to explain a penalty that effects the outcome of the match.

Re: Predictions for BAE Regional?

I agree, many penalties go unnoticed because of SO much action on the field. We have a very good robot this year, but because of alliance penalties, we have suffered.
