Magic: The Gathering at the Competitions

I am an avid Magic: The Gathering Player and was just wondering if there was a following in the FIRST Community. If you Don't know Magic is a Stratedgy Based Collectible Card Game. I was hoping to maby play a few games and maby even orginize a some sort of tournament at the competitions that I attend. My team will be at Finger Lakes, Great Lakes, and Nats. Let me know if your interested...

G/L to all teams this year...................

We seem to have the magic card master on our team. Here's a pic of him from the NJ regional last year:

While we're on the topic of games... there have to be some people who'd be interested in a good round of diplomacy...

Yeah, I was kinda wondering that too. Come on. You spent 6 weeks building a bot, and however many weeks waiting for your competition(s) to arrive, and when you get to competition in front of all those bots you want to play cards? I'm not a fan of magic, but my feelings would not change if someone were to bring a foosball table and start playing. You have 3 days per competition that you get to show off all the amazing stuff you did for 6 weeks. Why play cards?

You need something to do while the pits are closed. Why not play cards? Or Zendo, or Risk, or Homeworlds, or Yahtzee, or...

Re: Magic: The Gathering at the Competitions

Wait! Pits close? what am i going to do? Maybe I'll just run in circles til my head explodes thinking about the next day of comps. Ehh, i guess you're right, if you're lodging with other teams. But if I see those cards.......

Hehe, have your fun.

Hmmmm me personally? I hope to get as many hugs as possible. What a great game. So is nationals twister.

I'll be at GLR, but I can't play Magic...

I LOVE THAT GAME, not to mention i'm pretty good at it. And i have a few teammates going to competition that play. Wow it maybe possible over 3 nights to get a full game in, that'd be amazing.

Cards..... im not a fan of magic, those games seem to come and go, but i think we might have one player on our team... anyways he seems like he would play magic, but i don't really know. lol well anyways, sound slike fun while the pits are closed...........sadly we have to do something while the pits our closed, as much as i hate to say the pits are closed, its hurts me sooo. lol but games are a good deal as we usually just sit in the stands bored out of heads when the pits are closed - really fun!! haha, well yea games are good, up for a good round of ddr, but i guess no one will be able to bring that a competition - too bad...

I almost added Halo and DDR to my list of recreational activities above. I decided to leave them off because they require electricity (and perhaps a television), making them a little less convenient than a board game. But I'm sure some students will be turning their hotel rooms into network dens or arcades in the evenings.

You never know, someone might always bring a laptop with stepmania on it to the comp, for whenever there is some downtime. I have stepmania on my laptop along with an adapter for pads and I know atleast two other students with stepmania and a laptop. Now finding a place to play it would be a little harder then actually bringing it there. Magic isn't a bad idea though... I might end up bringing my cards now, in case there is anyone that is interested in playing when there is nothing at all to do.

I'm definitely into playing Magic during the lull's of the competition. What kind of format are you guys using to play: Extended or Type II???

Also does anybody have some Death Cloud's or Solemn Simulcrum they would want to trade over CD just PM me?

Re: Magic: The Gathering at the Competitions

Definitely bringing some mtg cards... Theres a few members on my team that used to play all the time with me on the weekends or whatever, but we just kinda grew out of em. I hope we can re-spark it a little at the midwest competition in Chicago...

NOOOOOO! I'm at the Finger Lakes regional right now and I didn't bring my Magic deck. Gah!!!

I used to always bring MTG to regionals, but ever since the majority of magic players on our team left, I stopped bringing magic to regionals, I never gave a thought to other people from other teams would have it. Oh well, its too late.

4 scaled hulks. 1 Kodama of South Tree. Unchecked growth on K.S.T. "Say, what rhymes with run for your lives?"

Ah... anyway. Any MTG players going to Portland regional?

Re: Magic: The Gathering at the Competitions

Counterstrike rules all. Last year we got all these laptops from various people and brought them along and played CS in every second of our spare time. We even wired a hub up to run off batteries and played it on the plane! I was wondering what the flight attendants thought of the sound of AK fire coming from the back of the plane..... But about 15 minutes after takeoff all our batteries started going dead anyway. And we forgot to bring mice for them so we were playing with the little touchpads.

*cough* Magic's been around for 10+ years and is still growing. It isn't like Pok'emon or that one game. I think its called "Yu-Gi-Oh" or something like that. Yeah. :D

Just one request, BRING TRADE STUFF WITH YOU TO COMPETITIONS!!! (and casual decks)

Currently I am looking for Marrow Gnawers and perhaps some Lightning Bolts. I've got a ton of stuff to trade with.
Also, if anyone is interested in a foil Phage the Untouchable, PM me.

Re: Magic: The Gathering at the Competitions

I have no idea how you could possibly find time to play this game! I don't know about you, but I am working pretty much every second that I am at a FRC. Either in the pits working on the robot, scouting or watching/and.or/opperating a match. Maybe if you have enough time at a FRC to play a card game you should consider your contribution to your team. The only exception I could possibly see if at Nationals you were to play after everything is closed and all team meetings have already happend.

Okay, I've heard everything now. Going from magic to pokemon. Sure, i'll bring a game boy and cable. Just make sure that when you say 'mean game' you don't mean that you did the 'missingno' trick to put your pokemon on rare candies. That is a classic though.

Uhh... OK. That really isn't true. Being a former mad collector of the Japanese Pokemon cards, I know for a fact that Pokemon was created by Nintendo's Shigeru Myamoto. The Japanese cards were never originally concieved by WOTC (Wizards of the Coast.) WOTC only adopted and made the American versions. The link, I believe, stops there.

Sorry, but I just had to correct you on that one. ;)

Well i know for sure that i will be bringing my magic cards to Cleavland, and to the nationals to if we make it :yikes: If sombody brought DDR i would freak because that game rocks. I have stepmania on my laptop but we are not allowed to bring them. Last year my team had a (pretty) big magic tournoment with another team and i thought it was a fun thing to do. We had to get an extention on the cerfue for that one haha.

Our team has some great Magic Players. We are going to the Silicon Valley regional and hopefully the Nationals. I haven't heard from any of you Bay Area people yet so PM me or post a reply so i know if i have to bring my cards. If you do though, expect quite a challenge. You have been warned. :D

Re: Magic: The Gathering at the Competitions

I've got a game that I learned from Dane Cook, It's called "Touch The Head" It's where you challenge someone and then see who can touch the most people on the head in 30 seconds (key word being TOUCH, you don't wail on the people, just a light tap is sufficient)...one person goes and then the other.

He also created a variation called "Touch the Head with a Pickle" same principle except you use a pickle instead of your hand.

I agree. Probably the only Japanese card game that WOTC was involved in is Duelmasters. The anime is freaking hilarious though I can't tell if if was dubbed that way or they just made it funny.

I'll play a few games with you at nationals... now that we're actually going to nationals. I'm Shonna, from team 388, and I warn you now, I'm not very good. Plus, I'll more than likely be dressed up like the Wicked Witch of the West... lolz... I just started a few months ago, but I'm looking for someone new to play with :)

Well I'm going to Drexel's, it would be my first regional, i haven't met anyone else on other team's that like Magic, yet the topic never came up. I'm only a collector but they are at least 2 players in our team, but i have their cards, they gave it up and gave em to me. so yeah if your willing to teach a noob during break hit me up, lol.
