Rochester Update
Hey all, i'm in the pit area of my team at Rochester now.
A decent amount of tetras are being stacked (more so than the scrimmages predicted). Autonomous mode is non-existant.* The best one (other than our teams) drove to the tetra and grabbed it. * Our team has been able to grab the tetra, drive to the goal, get over the goal, but has yet to stack it (All it needs to do is release our grabber, we're debugging the problem now) I'll be back on later to answer any questions. |
Re: Rochester Update
Anyone else care to give a recap of Day 1: Practice Day?
I see there are pictures at: www.FIRSTRochester.org/gallery Good to see.. And I hear that Team 237 is possibly going to have a live webcam set up at some point tomorrow.. Hopefully early, so I can watch on my break and at lunch time.. |
Re: Rochester Update
How are the practice fields working out? How are they scheduled?
Is there a time limit? |
Re: Rochester Update
Awesome pics Elgin! I really wish I was there now... is Paul the MC or a ref or what?
|
Re: Rochester Update
sooooooooo many days untill my competition. RRRRRRRRRRRRR can't wait. Looking @ those pics makes me want to leave right now! Sweet pics Elgin. ;)
|
Re: Rochester Update
Those are not my pictures, so I will take credit for finding them online, but not taking them and making them available to everyone.
That credit goes to Rochester FIRST. |
Re: Rochester Update
Can anyone tell me how well the volunteers are? Or more specifically, the student ones because most of them are from my team.
|
Re: Rochester Update
The event seems really well organized, and the volunteers are most helpful. I love the machine shop people there!
The summary of the game is fairly accurate. Few people had auto as of 5:00 on Thursday, but we'll see tomorrow. I'm very impressed with several of the teams, but watching them makes me realize what a tough challenge FIRST gave us this year. I'd say the average team probably gets 3-ish tetras per round, or 9 per alliance per round. |
Re: Rochester Update
the practice field was a mess today. tomorrow will have rules; 15 minutes max at a time and only 2 bots out at a time. today there was average 3-4 and it is almost 1/4 the field so yeah a lot of no room and bots hitting people. yes the stacking of tetras has be amazing! and it is a lot of fun his year can't wait till tomorrow!
|
Re: Rochester Update
Mike got his usually quality pics up on his site.
Good stuff. |

Re: Rochester Update
how often did teams run the field and cap the other side?
what have the refs said about the loading zone? Why am I not at one of these competitions yet? |
Re: Rochester Update
how often did teams run the field and cap the other side?
Fairly often, though I'm not sure how intentional it really is. You just kind of go wherever you can quickly and cleanly, with rows coming as sort of a side-effect (for me, at least). Line of sight is critical! Non-agressive blocking was rampant, just by crowding a driver into lurching away and losing a tetra or something of the like. what have the refs said about the loading zone? They've been VERY picky. Make sure you have fringe! |
Re: Rochester Update
Re: First Week Regionals *Merged*
we should start a chatroom.. because this Q&A response thing is slow~ and ther eis alot of excitement out there~ so I'll make one name "FIRST Regionals" on AIM come if you can -- hit yourself if you can't __________________ |
Re: Rochester Update
And on that note, let's keep this thread exclusive to new information, and things happening at Rochester ONLY please..
Thanks. Good luck to all the teams attending. And someone keep us all informed, so we are not all on the edge of our seats constantly refreshing CD, or racking up a huge cell phone bill calling my team looking for news (which I will be anyways). |

Re: Rochester Update
I'm curious about how many people have an autonomous trying to cap the vision tetra. I saw a post in this thread about few with autonomous modes at all as of yesterday... has anybody been successful at all with a vision tetra yet? Good luck to all the teams!
|
Re: Rochester Update
Schedules out. 66 matches, 33 teams - 12 matches per team.
10 minutes till Dean's on for opening ceremonies! |
Re: Rochester Update
There was a rumor that 217 and 229 were going to consolidate their pits, as they are right next to each other. Is this true? If so... can someone post a pic?
Thanks, Andy B. |

Yesterday, 237 grabbed the vision tetra and drove over to the goal to stack it, only to have a code problem which didn't let the grabber mechanism release the tetra over the goal. Arghhh.. SO close. Today, 237 has grabbed the tetra, and started to find the yellow and drive over to the goal, but the placement of the second vision tetra on the field has been a bad luck thing, and has gotten in the way of driving over to the goal in the 15 second time limit. But I have faith in my team and they will get it done sooner or later. It is only a matter of time. Oh, and by the way, I heard the high score in Rochester was 76 so far today with 4 rows and a bunch of randomly stacked tetras. Can someone confirm that who is actually there? |
Re: Rochester Update
Latest from 237: 6 and 0. Two of their last 3 matches were won by one point and the other was 31-0 with the other alliance getting a 30 point penalty. I think their other matches had scores of 42-47-52. With the opponents not getting close enough.
|
Re: Rochester Update
Does anyone have the match results and standings yet? Nothing was working at the regional to be able to tell what place you are in.
|
Re: Rochester Update
Amazing day today! just some notes: X-cats 191 8-2, 273 looking great, 639 looking great, 38 looking great, 1559 looking amazing for rookie! a lot of big penalties at beginning of day now calmer due to having the jitters out of the system! can't wait till tomorrow, good luck everyone!
edit, 211 MAK is doing amazing and won an award because of their mecanum wheels! |

Re: Rochester Update
Great article in the Democrat and Chronicle today.
When I was leaving the social, I heard that the scoring was fixed, and that tomorrow should go much smoother, but I don't believe it was ready in time to get it to the webmaster. Be patient. Speaking of the social - how about that karaoke?!? I for one had a great time at the social. Decent food, lines not too long, lots of options. Good times. :D |

Re: Rochester Update
Hey guys,
Haven't checked in a while, here's some info. LOADING ZONE -Make sure both feet are in the loading zone! That's probably the most common penalty. AUTONOMOUS -Team 237 will be capping by the end of the regionals. No other team is attempting to cap, the other autonomous modes are A. Starting with a tetra and stacking a goal next to them. or B. Knocking down the tetra next to them. or C. Nothing (Most common) EDIT: 191 knocked 217 out of 2nd place, but rumor has it 237 is picking 217 as their alliance partner . ;) |
Re: Rochester Update
Just out of Rochester, from the boys on 237, i hear 237 picked 217 and 340.
2nd seed is 191 with 494 and 639. I didnt ask anymore though, didnt want to waste their prep time. I must say though, but those 6 teams would be an interesting finals. |

Re: Rochester Update
1) 237, 217, 340
2) 191, 494, 639 3) 1559, 1450, 1591 4) 1507, 229, 772 5) 1567, 1126, 145 6) 326, 84, 211 7) 1511, 378, 1509 8) 38, 1370, 174 stole that from elgin's IM. In my opinion, if finals turn out to be 1 vs 2, it will pave the way for the rest of the alliance selections this year. From what I know-1st seed is 2 offensive and one defensive, while 2nd seed is two defensive and one offensive. If that is the finals, whichever style wins, would really make the game for the rest of the year. |

update: 237, 217, and 340 just advanced from quarter finals.
|
Re: Rochester Update
Through a poor cellphone signal, it sounded like 494's alliance advanced as well as 229's. I also might have heard that 237's alliance will be facing 229's next, which if they go highest seed advancing plays lowest seed advancing, means the third seed won as well. Dont quote me on this though.
I'm not sure if thats a rule, but in most Sports Tourneys, thats how it goes. |

EDIT: 237, 217, and 340 were just eliminated by 229 & co. |
Re: Rochester Update
237 eliminated :ahh:
Appearantly 237 had stacked about 8 tets, and then someone took a 30 point penalty, nullifying all 8 and 2 more. Jeez, the penalties are a bit much. |
Re: Rochester Update
494's alliance vs 229's in finals.

Re: Rochester Update
Congratulations to teams 494, 639, and 191 for winning the 2005 Finger Lakes regional!
|
Re: Rochester Update
YES!!! FANTASY POINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahah...
but great job 494, 191, and 639. I knew you guys had an excellent shot. Just tell us all how you played the game now. :D |
Re: Rochester Update
It was a great regional!
And not just because we won it all but I loved the atmosphere. The camraderie amongst the teams and the outright fun that everyone was having. There were some amazing teams there. First and foremost I want to thank 494 ( I forgive you for the ambush Kareoke :p ) and 639 for being great alliance partners. I guess the Angry Red Martian Cats pulled it out. You broken a 14 year drought and helped make a long time dream come true for us. Thank you so very much. I want to congratulate team 1507. 772 and 229 for being such excellent opponents in the final. That last match was a doozy. I hope to see all of you guys down in Atlanta, in particular 229 who had an excellent robot and I was very disappionted to hear might not be going down because of funding. You guys deserve to be there so bend someone's arm to make it happen. I want to congratulate 340 for winning the regional Chairman's Award. You are truly a leader in the Rochester FIRST community. I also want to give a shout out to Rochester FIRST who put on a show from the aboved mentioned veterans and 211 MAK for another reward for their innovative robot to our impessive rookies from 1567 (my old school East High. I am so very proud of you guys), 1511 ( I guess your comming to the party after all) 1559( may this be the harbinger of bigger things for your program) , and 1551 (I hope it doesn't take 3 more years to get the funds you so richly deserve). I want to congratulate 1450 for their amazing showing. I was so happy they did so well. I would also like to commend 22 for comming from Cali to help out with the regional. It was a great weekend. I can't wait to do it all again! |
Re: Rochester Update
Congrats, a lil disappointed that we didn't get to play with you on the same side but at least a Xerox team is coming home with a Regional win once again! 3 years in a row xerox has one Regional win.

I'd like to thank teams #229 and #772 for being great alliance partners, and just basically a great group of people to be around. It's a shame our robot tipped the center goal's tetras, or things just might have been a little bit different. Overall, the Finger Lakes Regional was great, and I hope many more great ones follow! |
Re: Rochester Update
that was the loooooooooongest time ever for judges to call the score, the final match at FLR, in the history of FIRST
I wasnt sure if they were calling Dave on the phone, or were going to tell us to come back sunday to see who won it had to be a good 15 minutes, serious I gotta say, whenever they get out the rulers and index cards to measure the stack and see who won, when its that close the Finalist have nothing to be ashamed of. I doesnt get any closer than it did today! Congrats to all the teams, it was a great regional. |
Re: Rochester Update
191, thanks for picking us, and 494, thanks for defending us while we capped. I had a great time driving in the finals and the last match proved to be the most interesting of all. To 1507, 229, and 772, thanks for that awesome match. It was a great ending to a great regional.
I'll post more after I get some more sleep. And we may or may not be going back to Canada again due to this ;) |
Re: Rochester Update
A couple of 188 members and myself had a great time in rochester just taking in the game for the first time, and though we werent competing, we were on the edge of our seats again during finals, cheering for our fellow Canadian team 772 =P. Great job by all. I dont think there was a single match in the eliminations that wasn't exciting. Congratulations to the winning alliance, 494 in particular for another excellent show of defence during that second match.
Exactly the final we had predicted. Good job all! |

I couldn't be happier that the XCats have won the inaugural home town regional. So a Xerox team wins the competition and a B&L team wins the chairmans. Man the sponsors must be happy! Thanks, and congratulations! |
Re: Rochester Update
In the last 6 years I've been participating in this program the Finger Lakes Regional is by far the best I've been in. Everything was awesome (arena, pit size, Social (comedian, movie, kareoke, open gym) ( I told people that this would be the regional with the best food - catered by the RIT Hotel management school, it was true!) And most of all, every team was downright pleasant to be with. I'm glad to have met many of you guys I've chatted with online here in person especially Mr. JVN(229) and Paul Copioli(217) too bad we couldn't hang more but one night was great. This is what makes FIRST great!
As Ed already mentioned we had an awesome alliance at this Regional. Many thanks to the assistance of teams 494 (Martians) and 639 (Code Red- too bad you're not coming to Atlanta). This was one of the best complimentary alliances I've seen during this regional. The suspense made the win sweeter don't you think. The refs even reviewed the last five minutes of the match, I heard, to confirm the decision they've made. Congrats to 1507, 229, and 772 for being the challenge that everyone expected the finals to be, it was a close battle. |

Re: Rochester Update
Unfortunately, the link from Ed's post no longer works, because it was a temporary place-holder. You can see my 2005 Finger Lakes Regional photos here: http://robotphotos.org/2005-flr.
I've got Day 1 (practice) and Day 2 (first day of competition) sorted into folders and I've got Day 3 (last day of competition) left to do. That'll probably happen over the next week or so and once everything is sorted, I'm going to delete duplicates and keep only the most interesting of the photos. Feel free to add comments if you want, but please don't post anything offensive or illegal. |

It's been a week and no update for qualification matches and tournament matches.
I'm starting to get annoyed. Is there anyone out there who has the information? |

2 years ago, FIRST never got the results from the first week regionals posted. Hopefully it doesn't come to that, but give FIRST time.
Here are the first 2/3rds of the qualifying matches: Code:

Here are the rest of the matches I have:

Re: Rochester Update
Sorry to bump this thread all the way from page 5 but does anyone have just the qualifying match list that was handed out to teams on the Saturday of that weekend? I know Joe Ross posted match results above but I am positive our team's last match was a tie because it was the only tie of the competition, so something is mixed up with some of the data near the end, and it would only be in the last few matches that there's an error.
The only reason I ask is I'm trying to gather some information to get corrections for team 1251's ranking website. Thank you! |
