Are you disappointed at all?

I'd definitly miss my prom for robotics too though. No question.

Re: missing prom for nationals (was: *?*!*)

Lets see...

Prom... one time during your senior year, for some its only one time during high school.

Robotics... you see and meet a lot of new people. You learn a lot. You see your friends who you don't see on a daily basis. How can you miss nationals? I would go crazy if I missed nationals.

I would choose Robotics over prom anyday.

Prom? What is this "prom" you speak of?

Oh!!! The night I leave for International Science Fair?
HA!

:)

Prom isn't that big a deal unless you let it be. And it can be almost as expensive as Nationals.

Re: missing prom for nationals (was: *?*!*)

Prom in the spring...gosh! My school has our prom in the fall...so it will not be a problem with me when I am a Jr/Sr. Sometimes it pays off to be different. :p

You should be grateful that your team has enough financial support to go to the Championship! I'm sure there are hundreds...thousands of kids out there who would trade prom for Atlanta in a hearbeat....
Consider yourself lucky!

oh, the prom! I thought you were missing a PROM (Programable Read Only Memory) and needed another one for the nationals!

you had me worried for a minute, I dont know if IFI has any spare PROMs.

My prom sucked, so i would have definitely traded prom for a trip to nationals :D

Only in FIRST do you get a response like this. ^^

But honestly, I would trade prom for Nationals anyday. I don't have to since we have our prom in the first week of May. *shrug*

No sweat off my back! But hey, don't sweat it, this could be your only time going to Nationals. So be happy!

Re: missing prom for nationals (was: *?*!*)

everyone reading this thread, you KNOW what you must do now

at Atlanta, friday night social, you gotta have an official FIRST prom for everyone who made the ultimate sacrifice for the team :^)

at least for, oh.... 30 minutes or so

This happened last year at the Championship .
I remember at the after party seeing this girl in a black dress and thought "she's awfully overdressed for the affair." Then I saw Mike's pictures on his site and realized that thi steam (anyone had any idea who they were?) were REALLY overdressed for the affair but it's no different than any other costume worn at the championship.

I would most certainly trade a lot of things for the money and time to go to nats (darn exam timetables)
Whislt we dont have prom's here, we have a end of year ball for this year (being senior year in your system) which i think no one would want to miss to be honest, but still, i want to go to nats!

Haha ya, I remember being on the field when this team wearing formal dresses and tux's came out and competed wearing signs saying something like "Im missing my prom for this" or something like that. I thought it was really great. I was lucky enough to make it to my prom last year, I think it was a week before nats.

yeah the juniors going to nationals (myself included) are missing prom - nationals is going to be awesome though!!!! 3 hours of dancing can certainly not compare to three days of the best event of the year on a national scale!!!

heh yep we were partnered with them for one round, and I can still remember how weird it was to look on the other side of our booth and see a kid in a suit tossing purple balls...

they were really cool- told us all about how they were missing prom, it sure was a great way to stand out..

because we are located in atlanta, and our school prom was at the FOX theater which is.......3 min from the Georgia dome, our seniors where able to run back and forth between the robotics and Prom :D :D

Awww, Liz!! Mount's Jr. Prom is the same weekend as National's again!? Oh well, you are making the right decision (been there, done that) because you will have the time of your life at Nat's. There is always senior prom (which is all you really need).

We never actually did this, although we had the idea to, but you should totally bring a formal dress to Nat's and have some lucky robotics guys be your date to the team social ;). It's the best of both worlds....pretty dresses + robots!!

Re: missing prom for nationals (was: *?*!*)

Think about it this way:
If you went to prom you could possibly have a good time some friends, or you could end having a terrible time depending on how well organized the event is. If you go to nationals, however, you will most certainly have a good time with thousands of friends from all over the world, while participating in something you love!

I, and three others from my team last year, missed our senior prom for the Brazil International Event (which I suppose is somewhat different). It was sad to have to miss the prom as you only get to do it (at least as a senior in your own school) once, but it was certainly well worth it for such an amazing experience, and nationals are the same way. While it may be hard for "outsiders" to understand your decision, you'll know that you made the right choice when you're standing there in Atlanta watching 6 amazing robots go at it for the big win.

Re: missing prom for nationals (was: *?*!*)

Last year I made a bad decision by choosing to go to prom instead of going to Nationals. My prom was terrible, and I didn't even know my date. Now I'm in college and don't have the chance to go to Nationals (they're the weekend before finals for me. If I could go back and change one thing about my senior year, it would be going to Nationals.

Cody Carey 23-04-2006 12:55

Re: missing prom for nationals (was: *?*!*)

I couldn't have... if they were conflicting. By the time we were sure we were going to nationals, I had already poured quite a bit of money into a limo, a tux, and dinner... not to mention flowers and everything else that goes with prom. So I am rather lucky that my prom is on May 5th, or I would have to miss nationals.
Another determining factor in my would-be-choice-to-miss-prom is the fact that It would take a lot more than three days in Atlanta to make me miss miss a chance to dance with the most beautiful woman in the World! (something like a pack of wild horses) :D

Re: missing prom for nationals (was: *?*!*)

I went to the 1/4 mile drag strip instead of going to my prom.

Something about that 110 octane fillin' up your lungs at the HighSchool Nationals in the morning' just feels right :D

KenWittlief 23-04-2006 14:20

Re: missing prom for nationals (was: *?*!*)

ok, lets do an engineering tradeoff study on this:

1. What can you do at the prom that you cannot do at the Championship? (I would say nothing) !

2. What can you do at the Championship that you cannot do at your prom? (many things).

Conclusion?

Re: missing prom for nationals (was: *?*!*)

This year, after we won UTC, our juniors had to make the decision of Prom vs. Nationals. It wasn't a very hard decision for me, but lots of kids were on the fence.

Unfortunately, I was the only one who chose nationals :(

Besides, the person I would have taken as my date is already gunna be at Nats, as well as like tons of other people I would rather spend three days with than one night at prom.

Well anyways, hopefully at some point I'm going to walk around in my dress, granted I finish making it!. It's blue, you cant miss it!

There is a great photo somewhere in the FIRST archives of two girls driving in prom dresses, with signs on their backs "we are missing our prom to be here."Almost positive it was not last year, but before.
This is going to drive me crazy now, trying to find it.

Yea idk I think I'd find myself a prom date at championships and ask them to the team social if I were you.

...of course being a "yay I love high-school and being involved" nerd I'm pretty happy my prom's in a few weeks...

BUT if I had to make a decision...HELLO ATLANTA HERE I COME. I think I'm DEFINITELY a bigger ROBOTICS NERD. Who needs fancy uncomfortable dresses and hair when you can have ROBOTS and the BEST time of your life?! HUH??

Re: missing prom for nationals (was: *?*!*)

I missed my Senior Prom for Atlanta last year. However, on Saturday night I was with my friends on SPAM and we had a dance-off in the halls at one point making a "remote Astronaut High prom." Between the competition and little things like stuff like that, you realize that being around good friends and just having some fun is the same whether your at a high school's prom or having a mock prom. I know in my case it ended up being that by being at Nationals with great friends is probably a better memory than I could've possibly gotten by going to prom with a bunch of people I just went to school with. Have fun with it and you'll never regret it.

I would miss Nationals to go to my prom.
I have been to three Nationals, all three were good.
But nothing, even if it sucks, it is the memories that are there, that you wouldn't have by missing it.
Everyone that I have talked to that didn't go to their prom, say that they regret it.
I think I would regret it also.
I am just glad that I don't have to make that decision because our prom is at the end of may.
But if I did, I would be going to prom.

Re: missing prom for nationals (was: *?*!*)

I would also miss Nationals for prom. Prom is a REALLY big deal at RMHS and is the Friday before Graduation. I have been a chair on the prom committee and know how amazing it has been and will be. It is the last time the senior class will all be hanging out together and is where we all say good bye and good luck before we embark on our futures. I am very glad that the RMHS has its prom so late becuase I would never want to make that decision. I guess I would have to go to prom/post-prom cruise and then book it to an airport to get to Nationals.

Question for you two: if you had been in my situation (going to the Brazilian FIRST exposition instead of prom) would you still feel the same way? Is prom that important as to make you miss any form of robotics trip, or is it just the national event? Is it that you've already been to nationals in the past that you'd be willing to give it up?

JaneYoung 24-04-2006 10:48

That was 2004 and they had the best time. A great part of that was for all of the rest of us. We would smile and cheer watching them kick butt in prom dresses.

Brazil is different, that is international so I would go unless it is something that is open to me every year then I wouldn't miss prom. But if it was anywhere in the country I wouldn't miss prom. It is something I cannot repeat, I can always go to Nationals, even if I am not on a team I can show up to the Dome.

I suppose that's true so long as you can make it fit with your school schedule (which unfortunately I can't this year :( ). I have no regrets for missing prom for the Brazil event, but I don't really know how I'd feel if it was nationals. I think I really wouldn't mind missing the prom that much as nationals mean a lot more to me personally, but I can't be certain.

I was on the prom committee and I have a lot of friends that aren't in robots so I guess that is why prom means so much to me.
