Do you do sports?

Hey guys,

A little poll against the prejudice (outside FIRST) that FIRSTlers are geeky and not sporty at all.
What sports do YOU do outside the FIRST season?

Just interested...

David Kelly 09-04-2002 22:15

if i could be in NASCAR or the IRL, i would. it's not a kids sport. oh well i guess i'll have to wait a while

Ian W. 09-04-2002 22:40

but...but...but all of those sports take place outside. aren't there bears outside?

taken from some penny arcade strip. couldn't find the right one. :p

now, i don't hate sports, i'm just not good at them. which translates into english as, no, i don't play sports on a school team. :D that would take up so much valuble time that i could be getting a nice, healthy, tan--from my moniter!!!

Jan Olligs 09-04-2002 23:10

Do you mean tan or skin cancer? Anyway, you usually don't play hockey, swim or do martial arts (sometimes, if the weather is really good or really bad - painful experiences that I loved...) outdoors (if you are on a team...) and you usually play tennis indoors in winter. Yesterday we were running and doing sprints in the rain for about 40 minutes and about half of the team complained - so much about tennis indoors and the school team - sports association (I don't mean it, I am just being a bit mean).
Oh, by the way, I don't consider Curling or Motorsports sports (and chess neither).

Stephanie 09-04-2002 23:20

awwww...why can't curling be a sport? :P
badminton, baby! hmm...note to self, better racquet needed
nearly every person on 668 plays a sport. most of us are either in badminton, swimteam/waterpolo, or softball

Carolyn Duncan 10-04-2002 01:17

I played 2 sports in high school, one of which is not listed. I was a basketball player and a soccer player.

D.J. Fluck 10-04-2002 10:37

For my first 2 years of HS i played soccer, but i had some issues with some team members and their gigantic egos (jerks) so i just gave it up, but i have been playing rec hockey for 7 years or so, Indiana is a "basketball" state so the closest hockey league is over an hour away from home and it was too much trouble to travel down there during school and everything.

Jgreenwd1 10-04-2002 10:38

baseball

baseball is the best.

Matt Attallah 10-04-2002 10:39

Hockey And Football! Woo-hoo!! My other choice was robotics, too :p!!

Dave_222 10-04-2002 12:53

I played football for 9 years but stoped after thethird knee surgury. I also realized that I was begining to fit into the jock category so i decided to become a nerd instead. :)

Ian W. 10-04-2002 17:04

well, contrary to my earlier post, i actually do things outside. no, it's not quite sports. i'm a boy scout, and if you ask me, that kinda wipes the "nerd" title away from me :D. i mean, if some "cool" kid came up to me and annoyed me, it's fun to think about how if we were in the middle of nowhere, i'd be perfectly fine, while he'd be like, dead. :D besides, my troop is pretty cool, and i like going on campouts. for some strange reason, i always seem to get the best sleep when i sleep outdoors. plus, as an added bonus, we get to burn things, LOTS of things, on campouts, and when the local church has the "Burning of the Greens" right after Christmas. oh yeah, boy scouts is fun. :D

Dave_222 10-04-2002 17:10

What is this sleep you speak of?

asher 10-04-2002 20:44

Boy scouts is ALL about burning things, its one of my favorite parts. I mean what's the point of having the remote controlled plane if you don't happen to spill some fuel and light it on fire, yeah I don't know either....

Ian W. 10-04-2002 20:49

hmm, we don't have r/c planes. but we have made some big bonfires. :D one time, we had to dig out the firepit, to fit all the wood in. after it was going, i don't think there was anyone within like, 20 ft of it, and those were the people who had to throw more wood on. :p

DanL 10-04-2002 21:00

Hmm, I'm suprised no one is a runner. Oh well, I guess everyone can't do cool sports like track or xc :D

Anyways, you forgot about the best sport out there: Ultimate Frisbee! If you don't play Ultimate Frisbee, you don't play. Okay, okay, blame my Frisbee-Hardcoreness on the place I go to during the summer - if this poll was posted there and UF wasn't included, someone would be shunned from society ;)

Ian W. 10-04-2002 21:08

calm down dan, just cause where you go doesn't have computers, and your forced to get a tan, well, that's you own fault. :D

DanL 10-04-2002 21:21

yeah yeah, track and xc are the sports of people who don't want to do sports, blah blah blah. But still, nothing beats Ultimate Frisbee.

Ian W. 10-04-2002 21:22

um, no one said anything about track and xc being the "non-sport" sports.

stevet75 10-04-2002 21:29

i run varsity xc. its probably one of the hardest sports out there. i ran it for 4 years and still can't figure out why.

Jan Olligs 10-04-2002 21:41

Because running is fun and you can use it for (almost) every other sport. I actually wanted to do CC too, but then there was a thing called Robotics at the same time (not FIRST, OCCRA)...

DanL 10-04-2002 21:49

What I meant by the non-sport thing is that track and xc require the least amount of skill. It's basically just a lot of hard work. Not sure how it is at other schools, but here, it's also the least time-consuming sport. You go after school, run for about 45 minutes, then go home. Nothing like 2 hours a day like the other sports. It's the least amount of time, but it's one of the most work-involved sports. Thats my opinion, anyways.

Jordan A. 10-04-2002 22:36

Underwater hockey

Jan Olligs 10-04-2002 22:56

Here Cross Country is neither more nor less work than any other sport (although it might be a bit harder because you don't have too many jogging or explanation phases like in other sports). Practice goes from 4 pm to 6 pm, like in other sports, includeing weight room training every second day. They also run on weekends and go to competitions. I know all that because I went to tryouts and they explained it to us - I did never show up there again because from the next day on I had to choose between CC and Robotics. Guess for what I decided...

Wetzel 10-04-2002 23:25

Wrestling and soccer.
Soccer is a great endurance sport. 45 minutes of sprint jog jog sprint jog sprint sprint...and having to do more then just stick one foot in front of the other. Then a 10 minute break and back at it for 45 minutes.:)
Wrestling I did, and found it much harder then it looked. 2 minute rounds, and for the nearly the entire two minutes you push your muscles to the limits. All of them. 3 rounds in a match, unless someone got pinned. And let me tell you, thats tireing.
And you tend to have 4-5 matches on a given Saturday meet.

That and running from ye olde rent-a-cop, but thats a diffrent story. ;)

Dave_222 11-04-2002 13:01

Rent a cops are funny they make me laugh. I would still be doing sports but u know it is against medical advice.6 years midget league football 1 year jv and one year varsity ..

Justin 188 16-04-2002 22:15

ROFL, WHUT????? Underwater Hockey??

On a sidenote, what is "real swimming"? And does that mean everyone who doesn't do "real swimming" is fake swimming?

Jordan A. 16-04-2002 22:27

Yup, underwater hockey, its hard as hell, I wouldnt be surprised if the "real swimmers" would come up short, everything is harder when your holding your breath :)

Jon Lawton 16-04-2002 23:11

J.A.P. 03-05-2002 20:54

Soccer is definetly the best. I've been playing soccer for ten years and no other sport i've played i've done that long and i've played basketball, rec hockey, and baseball.

prtynpink5 03-05-2002 21:32

I swim and play softball, neither sports are in the same season as FIRST though so it all works out. I used to swim all year round but decided it was a little much.

Melissa Nute 03-05-2002 21:42

Quain 03-05-2002 23:06

haha... flirt flirt flirt flirt flirt.... "ewww mommy... what are they dddoooooiiinnnnggggg!?!?!?!"

Harrison 03-05-2002 23:12

That reminds me of something that happened to me, and a girl that i use to go out with...

I would explain it, but I'm not going too.

Let's just say it involved my little brother (he's 8) and me forgetting to lock a door to a room that a 'friend' and I were in.

Quain 03-05-2002 23:13

EWWWW.... you weren't... "doin the nasty" were ya.. thats just evil.. ur little bro prob had nightmares...

Harrison 03-05-2002 23:15

Ne we were not doing THAT...but we were....well...busy.

I think he just didnt know what was going on...There was a scream of some sort (from me) then a drive to shut the door.

Quain 03-05-2002 23:19

wow.. that.... is... some... harsh.... stuff....

purplehaze357 03-05-2002 23:25

Melissa Nute 04-05-2002 07:04

Harrison - Are you trying to corrupt that poor boy.... you prolly scarred him for life...
Also, A-M isn't jeolous, she has Mike....

Judy 04-05-2002 08:41

OMG!Ok, lemme clear this up, Mike and I are friends. Ok, nothing more. I don't see why everyone here and at our school has to draw the conclusion that we're something more when really all we are is really good friends. I really value my friendship with Mike, and I look out for the guy... does that mean I want him? no! ugh!
*hugz to all as alwayz*

Amy Beth 04-05-2002 11:18

my school has no organized sports.
none.
none.
Y do you think i do FIRST neways?? (*kidding*)
Actually i think we might have a group that surfs together, if that counts as organized sports. And a group that runs together. But for the dedicated, there are club sports and i am not dedicated.
I lift weights and jog twice a week. Does this count as sports?
I think not, but it makes me to be strong. Cha.

Harrison 04-05-2002 12:12

Melissa: He walked in on me, not the other way around...It was his own fault...

and also...*clears throat*

Annie and Mike sitting in a tree k-i-s-s-i-n-g. First comes love, then comes marrage, then comes a baby in the carrage.
