2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
Still need to agree on a name but other then that Ashley from team 1559 from Victor, NY and i from 1126 SparX from Webster, NY would like to organize a Rochester off season competition. the date is yet TBD but will not encounter the same date as any other off season competition. We are posting this just to have a survey type to see if any teams would at least try to come to our off season competition. It will most likely be located at the Webster Thomas High Gym for the field and the field house for the pit area. the school is only about 20 minutes away from RIT which held the FLR. So if any teams from anywhere especially teams who have gone to the Finger Lakes Regional would like to attend please leave a post here and leave your thoughts on this.

Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
ill have to talk to our captain(because I'm only a freshmen) but I'm pretty sure team 1155 from Bronx science would come. some where closer to the city then Rochester would be nice though, and that way you'd get more of the city teams.

Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
Team 1511 would definitely come. I will talk to our advisor and see what they think about it. I am sure that we would love to help you organize it or anything else you guys need. Its good to see that you guys want to host a off season competition. When we did the FIRST Rally it was a lot of fun and a lot of work. This would be a lot more in depth and I'm sure that you guys would need to do alot of planning. 1511 Rolling Thunder wants in and you have our support. I will spread the word out.

Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
there are a couple of things i would like to chime in on here.
i think that resurrecting the Rochester off season would be great! (Kodak used to have one every year) here are a few logistics to worry about. the field control, location, field parts, how many teams, one day/multi day, what game will be played, and the liability of the whole event. i think that it is great to work on this but just make sure you are covering all the angles so that it will be a great event for all. btw i am pretty sure i can get 73 here and know that 340 is always down for this kind of stuff (even though i don;t officially speak for them) another suggestion is to contact mike wade, who works for NASA Goddard because he owns a field and does alot of the off season comps. Mike Wade, NASA Goddard SFC: mwade@mscmail.gsfc.nasa.gov good luck and let me know if there is anything i can do to help |

639 would be definately interested, but we have to wait on how the money pans out. |
Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
Alright, we're in. I know the guy that runs 340 & I'm sure I can get him to agree. I can also help locate 1/2 of the field carpet (from the FLRC). If needed I aslo know the guy that was the MC for the spring comp at Edison. I bet I can talk him into it if you want.
340 will be willing to help out however you need. Just let us know. I was thinking about having our team take on a Mini competition but I didin't want to detract from the FLRC. |
Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
At the risk of shooting myself in the foot, and giving up one of my precious few free weekends  , I will go ahead and commit to this now....
I will write up a white paper on what it takes this year to "host" a scrimmage event (adding in all our experience from the pre-ship one that we hosted). I will include the following at minimum: Field Wiring Diagram Radio Controls Information Recommended Materials List Field Components List (including high and low cost field items) How-To's Hints If there is anything else teams would like to see in this paper, let me know... ahh let the fun begin! I will try and have this done before I run off to Cleveland & Toronto, so that all the off season scrimmage teams have plenty of time to plan :) Oh & Mirza, We can go to any of the local off season events for sure! :) |
Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
I just want to drive with 340 again.
Please email info when it is available to me. (or PM) |

Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
That would rock! I'm sure I could talk team 250 into going to it. In fact tonight we are having a meeting, and I will raise the question and see what the interest is in such an event. With an off-season event so close (about 3 hours) I can't see us not going.

Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
Hey Alex,
Nice job in getting people together... I told you " Ask and they will come!" We have a great community up here and I'm sure alot of the rookies this year who could not go to another competition would be willing to take another crack at it. Just have to figure in the time frame. Ellery |
Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
I can give you some advice. For one; don't use the NASA field. You can get one directly from FIRST. They loan them out for free as long as you pay for insurance (which could be a few thousand dollars). You'd need a good tech crew but these new fields are a lot easier to manage than the old ones.
In case people have forgotten, I founded/organize/manage the Beantown Blitz in Boston. In 2003/2004 I ran around the country volunteering at events to specifically learn how they operated. I taught myself and I'd be willing to pass along what I learned to any other post-season event coordinators. Maybe we could arrange for a phone call. |
Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
Chuck's interested...

Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
If I recall correctly, Dave Kelso and Libby Ritchie gave a presentation at last year's FIRST Robotics Conference on how to host an off-season event. Perhaps you should look into contacting either of them, or at the least take a look at their PowerPoint presentation.

Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
i'll try to talk 1403 into it, we need some sponsors or contributors first, we're like broke :ahh:
but some stuff you may want to do: -create a brochure to handout at competition about it -make a website or a section of your website devoted to promoting it. -give us dates |
Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!

Let's not totally give up on this. Remember, you are not alone on this. There are many other teams locally. You don't need to shoulder this responsibility yourself. I am impressed you have carried it this far. I would love to see something in the fall. Something I could use to show new students what FIRST is all about. The fall is also a great time to work on getting those couple new Rookie schools interested in FIRST. We are hoping to add a couple more new teams to go along with all of the amazing Rookies from this year. Some local teams may want something in the fall to help them pull in funding from sponsors. I know most of this was taken care of at the Regional a few weeks ago but... a little more doesn't hurt. All I'm saying is, take a break until after the Championship. Enjoy the season while it is here. We can spend the whole summer planning something cool for the fall. That's just my thoughts/ramblings. |
Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
I would love to come down to this, just to see if I could drive with 1511 and 1559. You guys are awesome. But unfortunatley, I am already going to the Canada's wonderland off-season event, in which case, I will not be able to attend if this does pull through. If not, you guys should try to come to the wonderland off-season event. It's gonna be a blast! :)

Alex don't give up so soon, there are alot of people interested and i think with a group collaboration we will be able to pull this off. maybe what we should do is start a committee after nationals that will work logistics. different people are good at different things and i am sure with enough intelligent and dedicated people this is a very doable project for the September time frame. come find me at nationals and we can talk if you want, because i have a few ideas on how to manage this endeavor |
Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
Nice job team.
Continue on with the hard work. :) |
Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
things are moving along....at nationals i had some long conversations with the people who i believe will be running this event. i talked to mike wade briefly earlier in the season about the possibility of the event and he seemed to be open to the idea. I have now sent him another email asking for the specific details about logistics. I think we have pretty much decided that the event will be taking place in October of this year and it will hopefully be in the Clark gym at RIT. Alex and I thought i would just give a little update as to what is happening. remember nothing is official until it is announced so everything is subject to change.
if you would like to get involved with the planning process please email (gneedel@gmail.com) or PM me so i can add you to the mailing list that will be used for informational releases as we continue working on this event. Greg Needel |
Re: 2005 Rochester Off Season Competition!!!!
I'm sure if there is enough notice, Team 61 would be able to go!
