Great Lakes Regional!

Who knows how things are going over at GLR??? Who looks good, how are the rookies? Let's get some info out on one of the regionals most competitive regionals in the competition!!! :D

That is no suprise! Two incredible teams every year.

Everything was awesome, I'm from Team 1023 (ones who gather large crowd when playing Halo 2 on the Xbox/soundsytem/LCD screen on out robot cart) Anyways...The competition is pretty strong, lots of good and innovative designs. Only thing I have noticed is that many teams use something similar to a fishing hook to pick up a tatra, making it very unstable and they have problems with it swinging around and falling off...if they hit the smallest thing. Other then that, the autonomous modes were...less then exciting, most people's robots just sat there. We'll have to see what tomorrow brings...! (I hope the snow doesn't cause travel issues)

Re: Great Lakes Regional!

I was at the regional all day today (thursday). There were many robots that did very well. The ones that stick out to me at the regional are 33,66,67,326, and 1596. What was a shocker to see was 469 putting there robot together all day in the pit :ahh: wasn't ready to see that one. Anyway game play should be picking up here tomorrow.

opnickc 10-03-2005 20:46

Re: Great Lakes Regional!

66 stuck out the most, being to was the only team to cap a vision tetra in autonomous mode.

326 also caught some attention; it has its human player stack 2 or 3 tetras onto its appendage (I guess that's the best word for it), which it lifts up high and drops onto the goals. The tetras always seated correctly.

279 was also cool with its tetra hopper

Although the practace rounds aren't officially scored, I must say that scores seemed a little low. Of course, it picked up toward the end of the day, and I'm sure scores will be higher tomorrow. Drivers just need to get more comfortable putting the tetras on top, many robots today were only scoring 1-3 tetras.

Anyway, most impressive would have to be 66. Best autonomos by far, and in general it's good at scoring the tetras.

really? they also did that just about every time at FLR but was not as successful as you say they are. it is one crazy robot though! i hope 67 and 33 plan together and get a win! so you have some experience on a winning strategy. so we cans weep buckeye again in 2 weeks together!

P.S. cool 67th post for ya...

well, it seems the the teams that realluy stick out are 66 and 67. 66 was just cool once they got going, and then 67 was just... wow. Those two could make some magic together...

I heard from a friend that 33 had a great run. However I was just informed they are having some troubles and missed every one of there practice matches....

Re: Great Lakes Regional!

Today went much better. There was a huge increase in stacking by many different teams. The teams that stick out are still the same. Lots of improvements made, 469 has a full functional robot with a nice concept. We had channel 4 news there and at the end of the day we did a mock up match with 2 on 2. Some awards went out, I forget which went to who. Besides that I was much more impressed today than yesterday. Should be exciting tomorrow for sure.

1254 here. Not registered under my number though. 66 sticks out. Our team almost had theres beat on our last match but our bot got stock on a goal and we were not able to break up there row in the middle. Have to say they are a great team. There are some good teams out there, rookies are showing that it can be done. I wish I could give a number to one rookie team, they only have four people on there team, and there bot is very effective. I wish I knew the rankings, last I knew we were ranked 5th with >22 QP. Any questions glad to answer.

As impressive as their auton is, I think it's worth noting that they've only capped goals once or twice, and not in a real match. They've come very, VERY close in other matches - literally, inches in some of today's games - but they're not quite perfect yet. ;)

The biggest question I've got: how the heck is our robot doing so well? We've been in the lower end of the top ten for most of the competition, and I have no idea how that happened...

Re: Great Lakes Regional!

Fantastic day today. 279 was totally impressive! I thought that their mechanism was very good.

As to the food, I was very unimpressed. I think that's it's very irresponsible of the venue (not FIRST) to not allow us to bring our own food to an all day event, and then to supply us with nothing but pretzels, pizza and nachos all day. I'm sorry if I sound like I'm whining, but what about those of us who don't eat those three options? I understand that they're used to providing food for a 3 or so hour game, but if they are unable to sufficiently do the job then they need to let us bring our own food in. :end rant:

That was the most expensive pizza I'd ever had. The worst too.

As for teams, I think 279 is doing awesome with their tetra hopper. I'm pretty sure they won an award for it, but I don't remember.

Today was much more intense than the practice rounds. A lot of robots stacking tetras. A lot of robots preventing other robots from stacking tetras. A good day it was.

Re: Great Lakes Regional!

Anyone have the rankings after today for GLR? The scoring system seemed to be really slow to update all day, our team didn't get a chance to see where we were at the end of the day.

The FIRST website isn't up to date or correct yet, they appear to have red and blue switched for each match and the rankings aren't updated.

Good luck to everyone tomorrow!

I believe today was fairly OK.

The food was fine for what I had. A real slushy slushy and a plain pretzel, over at the convocation center, not bad.

Good luck tomarrow, and get some sleep.

Our neighbors (both at home and in the pits, as it turns out) are somewhere in the pack. Not in the leaders, but not dead last either.

When I talked with them their spirits still seemed quite high.

Competition is getting tougher as machines are tweaked and operators gain experience. The data on the FIRST site seems very incomplete and the scores seem to be reversed. Hopefully they will get corrected tomorrow.

Re: Great Lakes Regional!

Team 66(great bot),67,and 528(I think) really stuck out to me. Another team that really stuck out to me was team 1549. Although they aren't doing so hot ranking wise, you have to give them credit for their effort. They are a ROOKIE team and they have used a ladder as their lift which is working real well. They just need to get their drivers to understand the game. Alot of dq's and some penalities. Hopefully tomorrow they will do better. They deserve a rookie award in my book. Great competition though.

Congratulations teams 66, 67, and 68! Awesome autonomous mode 66! :yikes: I had this feeling since from the start of the eliminations that your alliance will win the regional; especially since 66, 67, and 818 won against our alliance during the 33rd qualificaton round, by a ton of points! (20-59!) :yikes: Wild final match too!

What a great event. We finished second paired with teams 308 and 1023. The 66,67 & 68 combo was a little much to handle this time. We gave them a good run though. Our team was real happy with our bot this year winning the Motorola Quality Award and we placed on an average of 6 Tetras a round on different goal tetras each time. Again, 66, 67 and 68 were an awesome alliance with the ability to stack lot's of tetras. See everyone at the Western and thanks to our great teamates 308 & 1023. :)

66 was AMAZING... so impressive. Good job to 66, 67, 68. Wow...

Hey, does anyone know if FIRST will correct the standings, or what is going on with them? I noticed that 67 was 9-0-0, but in match Q68 our alliance managed to defeat them. It's just a nice cookie for our team to have knowing that they were in the only alliance to win over the regional champs. Something to keep them going until next year. Or is this one of those cases where one team has to play an extra round so their lowest score is dropped?

Good job everybody - That was one awesome regional! From everything that I heard on week one I was nervous - but this game turned out to be great!!!!

Great work to 322 and 308. I really want to thank 308 for taking all those hits for the alliance while they played defense, they got flipped over atleast 2-3 times. Great work to 66, 67, and 68 also...The last match so SO CLOSE...after waiting 10 minutes for the judges decision, we lost by 3 points...It was either the 3 point loss or a tie. Good luck all and see you at Nationals!

I would just like to congratulate the winners, the finalists, and all the participants of the Great Lakes Regional - you all did an awesome job and showed everyone what robotics is truly all about :)

I would especially like to thank Team 1 and Team 1254 for being excellent alliance partners. We didn't make it through the quarterfinals, but sure put forth a strong effort, and had fun in the process!

On behalf of Team 1447 Mopar and Center Line, good matches.

We had the honor of getting our butts handed to us from everyone of those teams on the winning alliance. Good job though, 66 for being able to manuver the vision tetra in autonomous, 68 and 68 for scoring soooo many points, you are all great, and deserve the win.

I wish we could have made it past the semis, and had the honor of facing you, but there is always next year i suppose.

I would also like to thank Teams 1596 and 910 for picking us as an alliance partner, it was a pleasure working with you guys, good luck in your future competitions.

Thanks for the congrats guys, I can hardly believe it either. I had the amazing luck to win the first FIRST regional I've ever been to, and hearing some of the stories from previous years I am incredibly grateful. As those guys ^^ said, that last match was insane. 308 pushing everyone around, the side goal changing ownership a good 5 times, and us in the corner stacking tetra after tetra on the home row. I must give many thanks to our alliance partners whose excellent robots and strategery allowed us to triumph over a very worthy adversary.

We also had incredible luck with our robot (or it was just well-built); we had zero major problems, just some minor things. Of course, it was enough minor things to prevent the programmmers from getting autonomous to work properly ("we've got 2 hours here to code"; ... ; "okay, we're done fixing everything, go ahead and start coding, you've got 2 hours"; "um, that was an hour and 40 minutes ago.").

A higher ranked alliance captain (top 8 team people) is allowed to pick any team below them to be apart of their alliance (even if they are in the top 8). If a top 8 alliance captain picks another top 8 aliiance captain below them, the next higest ranked team (#9) moves up to be a top 8 alliance captain.

I think I know what you are talking about. It looks to me that FIRST posted the final standings for the entire regional, after the playoffs. The problem is that they don't give an "updated at ..." note. For certain, at the time of alliance selection, 66 was #2, 67 was somewhere below that, and 68 was in the rest of the selection pool, lower than top 8.

I'm pretty sure those are wrong. Team 1 was the 1st seed at the end of seeding rounds, and Team 573 wasn't 19th as it says, it was 13th. Team 66 was 2nd and Team 67 was 3rd (I think).

469 was not selected for this year's GLR tournament, however I thought they had a nice and very original design concept that I didn't see on any other robot out there.

Re: Great Lakes Regional!

With regards to the question of rankings, the ones on the website are totally wrong. 67 was ranked 2, and picked 66, who was ranked 3. 68 was ranked around 26-ish.
Also, even though we had two teams in the top 3, remember that the rankings aren't actually that representative of ability. Alliances, technical difficulties, and inoperable opposition can all attribute to a highly inflated or deflated ranking. If they wanted to, the top ranked could pick the two directly below them, but it wouldn't necessarily be a good alliance.

Kevin Sevcik 13-03-2005 16:46

Re: Great Lakes Regional!

I'll second that. Our team was working robot issues all friday and had some close matches. On saturday we had everything worked out and were doing well but lost two of our matches. One due to a -30 pointer from an alliance mate and one due to an alliance mate breaking down and us falling over keeping an opponent off the center goal. (Sorry TTT) So I think we were a lot stronger than our ranking showed.

Also, this kinda points to the silliness of the standby robot selection since it too is based purely on rank.

Does anyone know if the anyone topped 67, 279, and 548's score of 74? I spent a lot of time in the pits and didn't see anyone do it while I was watching the matches? I checked the match results and didn't see anything, but from what I've heard about the websites information being right so I thought I should ask.

99.9% sure it wasn't topped at GLR, but someone in the first week got one in the 90's.

Yeah, I think it was like 98, they had all the goals capped but got a ten point penalty.

To get the standings straight, The first seed was 1. Number 2 was team 66 :) and closely followed by hot. I am unsure of 68. I know that 66 picked 67 and then picked 68. Thanks :) and congrats to all teams at GLR. 66, 67, 68: Great ALLIANCE!

:)

yea, the juggernauts ( #1 seed ) were ranked 7-1-1 so 66 couldnt have been 9-0-0, just to let everyone know. But 66 was the best robot there, 67 was a close 2nd, and id like to give props up to 279 for the hurder. :)

Heh, my bad. I knew that 66 and 67 had picked each other, I just had the order wrong. I do know that we were pretty far down the list though. It really wasn't until the finals that we got our strategy and driving working so exceptionally.

Actually....68 wasn't ranked 6th before going into the elimination rounds. the FIRST website was wrong. We were actually ranked 26th place before being picked. Hot just did some really good scouting ;)

Thanks to team #1 for choosing #1254 for the semi finals. I was one of the drivers for 1254, and it was a heartbreking loss. This was my first year in FIRST, and one of the best experiences of my life. This was the only even that we could afford, and we were glad that we were choosen into a #1 seed! Exciting stuff!

A shout out to you, #548, for bringing the best media coverage I've seen at any regional.

I would also like to say thanks to the Mech Warriors and Huskies for putting up a good fight. Hopefully we will get to play a match with one of you again.

Thanks to everyone for the congrats, and to 67 and 68 for working with us. I do have to say that I was hoping we would face off against 322 in the finals, as our teams have a good relationship, and they have a great bot this year. The last match was really a nail-bitter while waiting on the ruling from the judges. See everyone at Western Mich. and Nats!

Also, even though we had two teams in the top 3, remember that the rankings aren't actually that representative of ability. Alliances, technical difficulties, and inoperable opposition can all attribute to a highly inflated or deflated ranking. If they wanted to, the top ranked could pick the two directly below them, but it wouldn't necessarily be a good alliance.

no, team 1 was first, 66 was second and picked 67, who was 3rd, got it mixed up, not that it matters, 67 was gonna pick 66 anyways.

so is there any pictures of the winning alliance's bots?

Re: Great Lakes Regional!

We at team 326 would just like to thank our alliance partners for doing a great job. Just for clarification as to the dropping mechanism that several people have posted about on our robot. Yes we did stack 4 tetras simultaneously during practice. just as a heads up we will be trying for 6 or more during practice at nats, look out ;) Congratz to the winning alliance 66, 67, and 68 you all had great bots and deserved the win GL to all. 66 was real close to capping the center goal and i have a feeling that its going to happen either western michigan or nats.

Bots to look out for:

322
279
66
67
68
280

I knew we would either be in the finals against or with 66 as usual. That was an awesome battle. Your alliance was a tuff one, no doubt. I'm sure we will both be picking again at the Western, hopefully we end together this time. :)
