2005 Rochester off season comp ideas and so thread

so this thread is to have the ideas in one area (this thread). and please keep it that way.

some thing we have to think of is:
Price?
When?
MC?
Real FIRST field or pvc?
top notch real tie competition with awards or exhibition and lots of fun?
1 or 2 days?
who will help and maintain the field?
who will help and make sure everything in the pits is alright and OK!
who will volunteer as refs or crew members?
Any other ideas?

all ideas and thoughts are welcome. i have not been to a off season comp and i would like this to be a great one. so if anyone who has been to a off season comp and liked a thing or two please list what they liked and they didn't!

thanks,

Alex and Ashley

Price? <= $200
When? Mid may to late june (after APs until school ends)
MC? Not necessary
Real FIRST field or pvc? REAL
top notch real tie competition with awards or exhibition and lots of fun? yes
1 or 2 days? 1 day

Re: 2005 Rochester off season comp ideas and so thread

Price? $250
When? How about late June?
MC? Anyone but me.
Real FIRST field or pvc? A real FIRST field.
top notch real tie competition with awards or exhibition and lots of fun?
top notch comp with awards.
1 or 2 days? 1 day but 2 wouldn't kill anybody.
who will help and maintain the field? Ask local kids first (they're readily available).
who will help and make sure everything in the pits is alright and OK! I'd use adult mentors for this.
who will volunteer as refs or crew members?
There are expenced mentors who have served as refs before in actual competitions.
Any other ideas? Limit the amount of teams to something between 20 or 30 teams.

Re: 2005 Rochester off season comp ideas and so thread

Price >= 200
When: late June sounds good.
MC = Not 100% needed, but would be nice.
Real FIRST field or PVC? Gotta go with real.
top notch real tie competition with awards or exhibition and lots of fun? Definitely top notch
1 or 2 days? Depends I guess on how many people decide to show up, and what kind of extras can be packed into this event.
who will help and maintain the field? There are many local students who would want to volunteer, but let's not forget about us other college students.
who will help and make sure everything in the pits is alright and OK! I agree Adult mentors definitely (does college student qualify as adult?)
who will volunteer as refs or crew members? People who have done this in the past, or who have experience.

Re: 2005 Rochester off season comp ideas and so thread

Price: Depends on what you can get donated. Venue? Sound system (if required... you'll need it w/ an MC) ? A real field from FIRST? (transport costs....)
Easily $2000 (i would guess just in field ship costs)

When: Before School's out.

MC: Why not...
Real FIRST field or pvc: Real field.

top notch real tie competition with awards or exhibition and lots of fun?
Might as well do it big.

1 or 2 days? 1 day. Hotel costs kill semi-local teams, and i don't think
2 days of commuting from Ithaca would be fun.

who will help and maintain the field? Anyone you can find.

who will help and make sure everything in the pits is alright and OK! Anyone you can find.

who will volunteer as refs or crew members? Anyone you can find.

Any other ideas?
I know the exhibition last spring cost some serious $. (I prolly have the figures somewhere... )
Keep in mind. Every $ spent on this kind of thing reduces the amount of $ that could be spent:
1. Lego League
2. Starting new teams.
3. Starting new regionals.
4. all the other stuff i forgot.

Re: 2005 Rochester off season comp ideas and so thread

1. It has to be a real field.
2. Make sure you don't schedule the event on the same weekend as another event in the same region. (Midwest, Northeast, etc.)
3. Choose the right venue. Lawrence North High School for the IRI and the main amphitheatre at Canada's Wonderland were both excellent venues for staging a full size offseason competition.
4. Try to arrange for "extras" that add to the experience and help make your event unique - Dean Simmons and the Kamens, IRI Talent Show, IRI Pig Roast, the fact that the Canada's Wonderland event is held in Canada's largest amusement park, etc.
5. Don't skimp on the refs - search for the most experienced volunteer refs you can get.
6. Work with area hotels to arrange for special accomodation rates - this will help attract out of town participants. I prefer a two day event (IRI is two days, and Canada's Wonderland was one day of competition and one optional day of exploring the amusement park), but even if you stage a 1-day event, you may want to seek out these hotel rates, because many wayyyyyyyyyyy out of town teams may want to arrive the night before so they can relax before going to the competition the next day.
7. Give out a complete set of awards, but feel free to personalize them to suit the personality of your competition.
8. Don't let Karthik MC.
9. Don't let Karthik sing.
10. Ignore points 8 and 9, but bring earplugs to the event just to be safe.

Best of luck to you both in arranging this event!

Re: 2005 Rochester off season comp ideas and so thread

Price?
Depends on how many teams are attending and what the expenses are.

When?
Get everything in order first.

Real FIRST field or pvc?
Real field.

1 or 2 days?
2 days would double the price, but also double the fun.

Kims Robot 29-04-2005 09:26

Re: 2005 Rochester off season comp ideas and so thread

If this is still being considered

Price? Keep it cheap $100-$200, a lot of the Rochester Rookies dont have a ton of spare cash (that said, you can likely get sponsored teams to donate more.)
When? Maybe August?
MC? (Maybe we can get one of our senior students: Mir, he MC'd the rally we did, and was awesome! sooo much energy!)
Real FIRST field or pvc? Either, its fun no matter what.
top notch real tie competition with awards or exhibition and lots of fun? Real competition.
1 or 2 days? one day preferably
who will help and maintain the field?
who will help and make sure everything in the pits is alright and OK!
who will volunteer as refs or crew members?

For all the who will help/volunteer, im sure our team would be happy to.
Any other ideas?
Make sure you find someone to coordinate information for teams out of the area (ie hotels/campsites)

Anyone know if this is still being kicked around and/or who is taking it over?
