viva la mascots

I'm a rookie this year and I have taken on the role of the team mascot. I get to be an apple. I have been wondering how many other mascots are out there. This team role has maybe not gotten the respect it deserves, but I'm hoping to change that if its true. If you are a mascot and if you're interested chiefdelphi has added mascot to the list of team roles that you can pick from for your profile. Anyway, if you're a mascot or not please comment back with your thoughts on this subject of mascots. i just want to get a general idea of how many other mascots are out there

RAGE has a brand new mascot, Sprocket, who debuted on Thursday. I don't think any of our mascot people are on Chief Delphi, so I'd like to ask some questions of other mascots...

How do you keep cool? We were rotating people in and out of the costume, but it is VERY hot inside. We have a washable liner inside but I think that only added to the discomfort level.

How long do you stay in the costume?

How well can you see once you are inside the costume? I have to create a larger vision opening in Sprocket's head.

Do you have any good tips for general care of the costume, and how do you ship it/take it with you? I need suggestions for getting that big head to the competitions without it getting ruined.

We use Wilson Magnet's Willie the Wildcat costume(just add an X-Cat tie dye and viola! It's an X-Cat!!! :D ). Numerous students sign up for the job because it get's quite hot in there and we don't want anyone passing out.

Team 66 has like 3 mascots. We have no name for them, but they are the members in capes running around plus maybe a cap full of buttons.

I'm trying to talk our captain into letting us make a mascot. i heard that 233 had a cool mascot last year and i liked the idea. i was thinking something simple for us though like making a boxy robot like the one in the jettisons out of cardboard boxes taped together and painting it silver, nothing to complicated a SCI BORG wouldn't be too hard to make.

Check out 578BlueLightning's costume. It's brilliant (though it looks uncomfortable).
378 The CIrcut Stompers alos had a great looking costume.

We have a beaver costume. It gets really hot in there and the head used to smell like urine. Then my friend poured Fritos in it, and now it smells like urine covered fritos......... I wore it last year..... I'm considering wearing it while I coach, but the vision is really limited.

Yeah, our kids were complaining about how the Cat's head stunk. I do wonder how they clean it, if at all :ahh: .

Sam will have a costume at the Greater Toronto Regional.

At FLR, he demonstrated his balancing skills:

Hmmm..... Febreeze. Good thinking. I'll do that if I decide to wear it when I coach. Now theres the issue of eccessive heat....... I was actually thinking of wiring up fans somehow, if I can find a way for it to work

well the field of view is different for each mascot, take for instance i have a apple suit then i have a stem hat so the problem really isnt vision its hearing. febreeze is a good idea but dont go over board. now for the heat. for I'm oure only mascot so i thinking lighter clothing under the suit n lots a deodorent, but personally ive tried to raise my core temp of my body. my only real concern is having enough energy, but i think i take care of that with lots of JOLT.

Our mascot is the Bobcat, which our school uses, except we have some modifications (notice the got bot? sticker and the button). See attached.

Our team mascot is a cow. I am the one who is dressed up as the cow this year. Our costume is very cheap, it is very thin and only has a hat for the head so I don't get too hot in it. The coolest thing about our mascot costume is last year at nationals, we had the udders of the cow signed by Dean Kamen :D

There are some websites online which mention installing fans inside costumes. I may try to do that. We will be spraying ours with Fabreeze, and I hung the suit up to air out yesterday, and am washing out the liner. I recommend drinking something like a Gatorade to replenish your system. Drink lots and lots of water, something I always did when I was a clown, since you don't sweat "properly" in greasepaint and heavy costumes. The FLR photo was great - did you have all the mascots together at one time?

They had all the mascots out on the field doing the YMCA on day 3. What I most remember about that was an eagle mascot (I think it was 1511's) and when they tried to a conga he tripped and everybody landed on top of him. OUCH!

Yes, we used the same mascot as last year. Although we got rid of the mask we originally had because it got extremely uncomfortable, and it was very difficult to see through. For the most part, keep your parts light and comfortable. We used mostly styrofoam, with velcro harnesses and padding (on the inside). The mascot had wooden stilts last year, but we upgraded with some metal ones for this year. There are already plans to make an entirely new mascot for next year. You just have to wait and see...

Although if you want to go with simplicity, go with the Backpack Mascot made entirely out of pvc and duct tape!

I am Team 104's mascot. Last year I was a rookie and decided that I would be the mascot. Last year I had a blast as a mascot. It is just so much fun. I even had a small fan club of other teams. However, I am also the director of Marketing for our team. So at the competition I am running around everywhere fulfilling marketing needs and overviewing marketing members while I am changing in and out of the costume. It is crazy but I love it. I can't wait until Thursday when I can do it again...
