Top 3 Days in your Team's History
I was talking to my mentor yesterday on the way up to the Portland Regional. I named the day before (Friday, we went 6-1) the 3rd best day in the history of WATSON Team 957. So I made a challenge to my team to make that day the best day in WATSON History. So we did. We won the Chairman's Award and finished 3rd in the Quallification rounds. I have thought it would be cool to see what teams thought their top 3 days were (Whether they are in competition, an award they got, a important breakthrough in design, a cool presentation etc....) So I hope other teams can post theirs on here and here is my teams "Top 3 Days in WATSON History" As of 3/13/05.
1. 3/12/05 WATSON Robotics Wins Chairman's Award for 2nd Time. We had our highest ranking ever as we ended in 3rd place after qualification rounds.. We got picked for the 2nd alliance with local team PHRED 847, and "graciously accepted" We were very spirited and active in cheering for all teams, and with our alliance partners 847 and 753 were very close and our voices echoed throughout the arena. We lost in the Semifinals, but in the Award Ceremony came away with the most prestigious award. 2. 3/5/04 WATSON Wins Regional and Sportsmanship Award. In the same day we came away with 2 awards for the first time. We were apart of the #1 seed alliance as the 3rd pick by 492 and 1031. We breezed through with a 6-1 record in elimination rounds on our alliances way to the championship. We won the Sportsmanship Award by helping out team 1432 a team that came with basically no robot and we had them working in 4 hours. Lots of spirit as we continued on in the elimination rounds as we gathered 5 or 6 oregon teams to cheer with us. 3. 3/28/03 WATSON Wins first Regional chairman's Award. This one was special but not quite as special as the 2nd one. We won this in Seattle the last year the event was held there, and we didn't have as good of day losing in the quarterfinals paired up with local rookie teams 1087 and 1130 in the 5th alliance, we only finished in about 19th place after qualification rounds and were dominated early, but then we went on to win the Chairman's Award alreadly having a spirit award from the previous day. Overall a great week. |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
top 3 days imho happened last year to 1369 i don't know the exact dates, but oh well
2003 NASA Grant: 1369 was founded and recieved the NASA Grant sending us to the Peachtree Regional. 2004 Peachtree (Friday) Xerox Creativity Award: We won our first award in team history for our innovative direct gear drive train (inspired by 25) and end effect. 2004 Peachtree (Saturday) Regional Champions: With 1002 and 1057 we were able to go undefeated in the quater, semis, and finals to win the Peachtree Regional. a cinderella season I have to say....a lot of hard work paid off really well.... |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
1. Some day in 2001: BCR wins the national championships.
2. 2004 SoCal regional: BCR wins regional chairmans for the first time after many years of trying 3. 2003 AZ regional: BCR is "blindsided" with the EI award not for on the field activities, but for off the field endeavours. |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
In 2001, 573 received a regional All-Star Rookie Award. We also were finalists in our division at Championships that year.
In 2003, we won the West Michigan Engineering Inspiration Award, which symbolized all the efforts we had put into not only the robot, but into bringing Brother Rice's sister high school into the FIRST experience). |

Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
Hmmm.... thinking....
3. Ramp Riot October 2002 - Even though team 84 had obtained a great deal of "hardware" over the years, no one had latched onto a Champion title at any event to date. After a long grueling day against excellent Mid Atlantic area teams.... Chuck finally snags his first Champion title. 2. Mid Atlantic Regional March 2002 - A whirlwind of never ending events. Chuck and Moose sweep up the Leadership In Control Award Friday evening, and amaze individuals on their ingenuity and design. After a long, amazing match with team 95 "Grasshoppers" (last match) Saturday afternoon, Chuck and Moose obtain yet more hardware with #1 Seed. The wind picks up again when we are honored with highly seeded team 25 accepting our offer as our Alliance Partner, and we end as Regional Finalists. All in all we qualified and made the trip to 2002 Nationals, and pre-qualified and made the trip to the 2003 Championship Event. 1. National Championship Walt Disney World April 1999 - The team that nobody knew. "Up CHUCK!" Chuck Pi, gets picked up as the third alliance partner for the finals, and finishes up a dreamy weekend as National Runner-Up. |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
1.) 2005 Finger Lakes Regional Chairmans Award

Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History

Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
1. Last years midwest regional, when we won the regional along with 269 and 45.
2.Two years ago, midwest regional, after having a terrible first day we stormed backed on the second day and came close to winning the whole thing. 3.Last years midwest regional when our alliance tied the highest score in the nation at that time. |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
If I had to Pick for 226
1) Great Lakes 2003 - Regional Champions (with 67 and 302). It was amazing. It was the happiest moment of my life. It probably deserves more than one spot on my best days list, because that definitely made my year. 2) Thursday March 10th, 2005, Pittsburgh Regional. I've never seen my team work so hard for so long. We worked for nearly 13 hours straight without rest. Even though we missed all but our last practice match, I'm proud of how well the team worked together. 3) All of the late nights at build. I probably occasionally complain about being hungry, tired, and stressed but I wouldn't ever want to give them up. Of course this is all based on my experience on 226, both as a student and as a mentor. If you asked someone around in 2002 they may mention something about being selected for finals at nationals, but I can't personally attest to that. |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
I would have to say the top three days for our team are the following:
2003 when we became finalists at the New Jersey Regional and lost by just a few points. 2003 at the Texas Championships when our team got qualified to go to the Championships and we had to make last minute travel plans. Our team ended up winning the Championship Team Spirit Award and just a few moments before we left the pits out all the sudden we heard 222..... We were like ummm did we just win something.... (We had to leave early because of our last minute travel plans) To say the least there was no way we could have made it from the pits to the arena as it was good 10 minute walk and make our lap around the arena! :( 2004 when we placed FIRST seed at Chesapeake and lost by just 10 points in the final round; we even took it the THIRD round! There are many other top days I can think of, but since you listed three I said the three I thought were the best. Just to let you know some of the bad luck we have: In the past TWO years we have been the finalists FOUR times in a total of FIVE FIRST regionals, but FIRST is not about winning so I shouldn't complain. Changing that bad luck this year so watch out! |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
2000 - At EPCOT, 2000 Nationals competition, team #269 seeds 3rd overall and ends up in 3rd place, losing in the national semi-finals to Team 25's "Claw of Death." We still refer to that darned robot today.
2001 - After seeding dead last at the end of the qualifications, we are picked by the #1 seed, and join teams 71, 111, 234, and 112 in winning the Midwest Regional with a national high score of 710 points, not beaten until the 2001 IRI. 2004 - The robot that could hang from anywhere, Hodag, goes 7-1 in qualifications at Midwest, getting the #2 seed, the highest in team history at any event, and goes on to win the regional with teams 45 and 930, qualifying 269 for Atlanta. |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
May 1997: Amy F. became the first student from our team to receive an intern appointment at NASA. This was followed by NASA support for her grad school and her current pursuit of a PhD in astrophysics. Amy establishes the groundwork for other students to become NASA interns based on their FIRST team experience.
April 2000: The first time a student on the team states that his experience with the team was the causal factor for him to get cleaned up and able to deal with severe substance abuse problems. March 2003: a father that has been helping with the team tells us how the ability to work on the robot with his son has changed them both. They see and appreciate each other in new ways, and their relationship has been significantly expanded and strengthened. May 2004: Alisha W., an alumnus of our team, is assigned as the FIRST Israel Regional Director and begins working to bring the program to the Middle East. After an enormous amount of work, this is followed the next year by the FIRST Israel regional competition, with 12 new Israeli teams and a brand new set of relationships between FIRST, GM, The Technion, NASA, The Ministry of Science and Technology, the U.S. and Israel. FIRST is about so much more than the competitions. With all due respect to the posts above, if the very best days of every team are defined just by the opportunities to collect plastic trophies, then we need to think again about what we have accomplished. I bet with a little more thought, we can focus on the things that are really important - the future careers created, the lives improved, and changes made to our society and culture. The competition events are just momentary celebrations of what we do. The real work - and real effect - takes place before and after the competitions. And that is where the important stuff happens. -dave |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
Thanks Dave for reminding us all of why we are here (and making me feel six inches tall). I deleted my previous post and, now with proper focus, I'll try again ...
There's no way I can narrow this down to three days/occurances, but I will dig up a borderline ancient thread: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4028 Rob is studying Engineering Technology at Penn State University. Pat is at John's Hopkins, has already been hanging out in graduate labs, and is talking about a PhD in Public Health. Kathryn is at RPI (a Rensselear Medalist) with a major so complex I can't spell or pronounce it. Allison is at Ursinus College as a Steinbright Scholar studying Business and Education. The graduating class of 2004 from Team 103 wound up at places like Tufts, St. Joseph's, and RPI. Last I heard current senior members of 103 are headed for incredible futures at places like Penn State, Carnegie Mellon, Boston University, Drexel, the list goes on. At my current teaching job, just the promise of a FIRST team next year has increased one student's motivation and grade point average. His mother has thanked me profusely already and he has binders filled with programming and other FIRST information. Awards are nice, really nice. I carry a letter from a former team member with me everywhere I go. When I think I'm too tired to "do FIRST" anymore and feel like the strain isn't worth it, I read the letter. The medals hang on the wall, but they are certainly not the reason I keep coming back. Did I say, "Thanks," yet Dave? ;) |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
For Team 233, my present team. Caveat--I wasn't with the team for some of of the events on my list, so other's opinions may vary from mine.
Championship 2002--winning the division Florida regional 2005--being top qualifier and winning regional NYC 2004--going through the entire event undefeated For Team 45 which I was with for 7 years. Championship 1998--winning the Big Event the last year before alliances Great Lakes regional 1998--finishing second after two "award-less" years Midwest regional 2002--regional Chairman's Award There have also been a number of less clearly defined "days in the teams' history" which are very significant, such as learning that team members have been admitted to MIT and have won major scholarships. |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
Im gonna have to dissagree with u alex!

Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
I'm hardly a veteran on our team, considering this is my first and last year as a student on the team, but I know the history fairly well and I'll take a stab at it. (I think only two other people on the team even have a CD account anyways)
1. Being Finalists at this year's Finger Lakes Regional (and winning our first award ever in four years the day before, which was the Website Award) 2. Making it to the Semi-Finals at the 2004 Canadian Regional 3. Going to our first regional ever as rookies in 2002 (Canadian Regional), and getting the school hooked on robotics for life :) |

Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
Well, I can’t speak for the entire team without discussing this with them first, so I’ll share the top 3 “days” in my own FIRST career (after reading Dave's post):
1) The day that Woodie Flowers personally presented me with the 2004 Peachtree Regional Woodie Flowers award. I am still moved just thinking about this and will remember that moment as long as I live. 2) The day we were able to help our friends from team 1396 build the “One Day Wonder” robot in the pits at the 2004 Nationals. I felt it a privilege to be able to be a part of this. The championship was also nice. 3) We had a special education student on our team for several years. One day his mother shared with us how her son’s experience on the team had changed his life by improving his self esteem. The plastic trophies for winning events are nice to have. They are presented to the team as a whole at the end of a very exciting day and serve as a tangible reminder for years to come. Many of the heart warming and life changing events that take place in the context of FIRST are rather private and not celebrated. Perhaps we could do a better job of sharing these stories when it is appropriate. Jay |

2002 and 2004: We avoid having our team disbanded by the school for having no teacher to sponsor it when a new teacher steps in to replace our old mentor (Ms. Holmes and Ms. Mycoff left in '02, were replaced by Mr. Johnston, who left last year. Now we have Ms. Williams, Yay!) Now: We have more dedicated members than ever before, and 7 loyal mentors. Still searching for an engineer though. |

Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
2003 Robot Rodeo - Team Spirit Award! The first award we've ever won! We were shocked... We were all so incredibly proud to finally win something - ANYTHING, and it came as a team spirit award. This really inspired a lot of people and gave them confidence. Our robot competed horribly and was an extreme design intended to specialize in something. It ended up specializing in dead last place at UCF. This was depressing as we had never worked so hard. But then to win the team spirit award in the offseason just showed that the team was strong regardless of our robots performance. We were so incredibly happy about that little award!
2004 2nd seed UCF - Finalists with 1083 and 180 (very cool to ally with our Brothers and sisters) - Judges Award. Robot Rodeo 1st place with 1402 and team spirit award again! Curie finalist at nationals with 11 and 190 - this was an honor to be allied with that amazing 190 machine! 2005 2nd seed UCF again - Delphi driving tommorows technology award - 1st place finish with 233 and 1529 again a huge honor to be allied with 233. After all these years admiring their machines we actually worked with them and won! |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
1) Great Lakes 2003 - Regional Champions (with 67 and 302). My Brother was driver and I was actually happy to say he's my Brother. that day felt so good
2) Winning the Delphi - “Driving Tomorrow’s Technology” makes me happy because all the students helped talking to the Judges to win us that award. 3) Thursday March 10th, 2005, Pittsburgh Regional. Practise and we striped down the robot and re did every thing but what was welded. missed all but our last practise match. |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
1) June 5, 2004 - Winning our first off-season regional event at Bridgewater Raritan HS
2) March 19, 2005 - Watching our team work together as we have a very spirited recovery from losing 3 matches and coming back to be 6-3, then to have a great set of rounds in the QFs. 3) March 31, 2005 - Reading this thread to realize that our best days are yet to come! |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
1) 2003 National champs
2) 2003 GLR regional Chairmans 3) 2005 GLR regional chairmans honorable mentions: 2003 MWR finalist (lost to team 45) 2004 MWR finalist (lost to team 45 again) 2005 MWR finalist (this time lost to 71 and 111) |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
of course winning is great, but i think the greatest moment was getting a "Real Men Wear Pink" button on Woodie's back in New York last year. *looks around* that wasn't me *cough*. ;)
winning the website award in denver was pretty good too because our webmaster had worked on it so hard. he wasn't expected anything from it. so it felt great to see him get the award. the next greatest moment was 2 years ago being the first team to successfully defend a stack of 8 boxes. also being the first alliance to get all 4 robots to the top of the ramp. that was great... |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
I'm not sure if our team has had any of the major, life-shaping achievements that Dave had in his post yet - we're only four years old, so the freshmen that joined in our first year are still on the team, albiet only for one more competition.
In that first year, we won the Rookie All Star at Great Lakes, Western Michigan, and Nationals. I joined the team in the next year, so I wasn't able to experience that, but those are all proud moments. The best moment that I've seen in my three years on the team came last year, at Palmetto. Team 507 arrived at the competition with a chassis, no programming, two adult mentors, and a handful of students. We spent the competition with them, helping them to finish their robot and becoming friends in the process. They even beat our robot in one of their matches against us. :) That would have been enough for me, but we won the Sportsmanship award because of our time with 507. |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
My oppinion of the top three days in 93's recent history.
2002 Nationals: Student David Belling wins scholarship to Michigan Tech University 2004 St. Louis Regional: Mentor/Teacher Sean Schuff Wins the Woodie Flowers Award 2005 WMR: Team 93 wins it's first regional |

September 2004: 1568 recieved 10,000 dollars (Thank You Raytheon) and was offically started... thanks to Cooley Group for the space.
UTC 2005: 1568 became the highest rookie seed and the 8th alliance captains, the same day with help from 809 in two matches capped all 9 goals for scores in the 90's June 18, 2005: 1568 performed even better than at UTC at battlecry 6 |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
3. 2001 Mid Atlantic regional probably when we won the regional with 175 75 and someone else i dunno who it was or 2001 when we won Philadelphia with 365 103 and 316 one of those two was our first regional win.
2. 2004 Mid Atlantic regional we seeded 3rd and were picked by the #1 seed 237 a team that helped up out in 1998 when our town was flooded they sent goods to our town to help the recovery efforts and won the regional with the help of 303's fridge as well 1. 2005- Championship event went through qualification rounds with just 1 loss and seeded 2nd in the Galileo division where we picked 254 and 64 went on to win the Galileo Division, then beat the Curie division and lost in the finals to 330 67 and 503 and became Championship Finalist |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
2003 - Won the Chesapeake as a Rookie Team and advanced to the Championship in Houston
Sat Mar 19 2005 - Set the new world record high score at that time of 121, we had broken the old record with a 120 on Mar 18, went on to win the Chesapeake with 173 and 53 Sat Apr 23 2005- Wound up 30th in standings of Archimedes Division, got picked in the final picking spot to join the 8th Seeded Alliance at the 2005 FIRST Championship. That Championship was something I will never forget. |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
Since I don't see anyone from from 639 posting, I'll take the honors.
1. 2004 Canadian Regional: we went 8-0 in qualifying, but due to "wardrobe malfunction" (banner getting caught in our treads) we had a low QP that round which brought our average down and ultimately landed us in 2nd place. We struggled all the way to the finals, playing 3 games in every round. During finals, our robot got twisted on the bar and our hanging mechanism was totally broken. 33 Killer Bees bailed us out of that one was some amazing shooting. We sat out the 2nd round to try to repair our bot, and in the end it was repaired and we went into the last round and won by a few balls. It was the first regional we've ever won and it shocked us all. 2. We were so short of money in 2005 that we barely made it by to sign up for FLR. After we won, we went to dinner, where our "robo-mom", told us that we were going to GTR because two mentors both pledged enough money from their companies for us to go. After we go back, our principal gave us money, Teams 340 and 73 offered us a large sum of the money that they raised for us to go to Championships, we got support from our school district, and all this support just started pouring from the community. Before we knew it, we were going to GTR and Championships and thinking seriously about starting another team in our area. We made the transition into a true veteran team this year. 3. My teammates may disagree with me on this one, but IMHO 2002 (Zone Zeal)Canadian Regional takes the cake for number three. I came in as a finalist that year, but it definitely surprised all of us that a 2nd year team could pull such a feat off. We were ranked 7th after qualifying and all the rest of the events went by so quickly that I have no idea how we made it to the finals. In finals 1.3, in the last 5 seconds, our ally shot back its tether at the home zone, but only to be short about a couple of inches. We were all stunned at how well we did. That definitely sealed the deal for every new member that year to come back. |

Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
This is one very hard task here to accomplish!!!
Thinking of the top 3 things that have happend in your teams history, now that is hard!!! Well let me say this, I have seen it all!!! All ten years of the Cybersonics season!!! Everything!!! Well just because my parents are the advisors of our team and because I have worked on the teams for 4 years now!!! So here it is: 2001-( I think the year is correct) We won one of our first regionals, and it was in the city of Brotherly Love, Thats right PHILLY!!! 2003- It took us a while, but we won our first regional chairmans award at New Jersey, and then in the same year won the National Chairman's in Houston, Texas!!! 2005- We won the New Jersey Regional in Trenton, and we won our first ever National Inventor award!!! Ohhh(how could i forget)...i am going over 3... 2004- New Jersey, my dad won Woody Flowers, it was well deserved too!!!lol Every year just keeps getting better and better, with more people to meet, more people to become friends with, and more experiences to gain from!!! FIRST is great, in all it helps to build not only robots, but people too!!! P.S From a personal perspective, how could i for get this one: Summer of 2002-New Hamshire- I met this girl, she said she was from New York, we talked and talked and well are now best friends!!!!!!!!!! See, if it was not for FIRST this rare bond of friendship would have never occured, and i would have never met this person i now call my BEST Friend!!!!! |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
March 4,5 and 6, 2004
We had shipped off the robot thinking that we might pull off top 20. 4th- Saw we had a chance of seeding 5th- Ranked #1 (or 2nd, can't remember) Between the days...Norowalk Plaque hits...takes out Primary shooter and puts drivers at risk. 6th- Pulled down to 2nd, got to finals, lost by 3seconds Top 3 days for 616 in my opinion |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History

As for team 88...
Nationals 1996: Liz Calef won the national Woody Flower's award!!! :D Nationals 1997: Team 88 picked up 7 tubes at once to show that 7 tubes could be done and placed on top of the goal. Nationals 2001: Mike Moran received a full scholarship to Northeastern University. |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
VCU competition of 2004.
day one- robot did really well in prelims day two- most of team spared by Norowalk stomach plague, robot climbs its way into 11th place day three- 3rd place alliance, beaten only by the guys who went on to win everything. *i think* it was a blast. |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
1. Saturday at Nationals, 2003 - We won our first Division at Nationals, in addition to winning the Entrepreneurship award.
2. Saturday at Philadelphia, 2003 - We won the first of three consecutive Regional Chairman's Awards (a steak we hope continues!). 3. Saturday at Nationals, 2005 - We won a National Judge's Award, National Chairman's Runner-Up, and our friends on the Vex team from Singapore brought home Vex's highest prize. Runner Up (not really a Top day itself but one that would be indicative of the future of our team): Ramp Riot 1, 2000 - The team hosted one of the first off-season competitions in the area for the first time. Since then, the event has grown to twice the size but is still the hilight of our offseason every year. |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
116 top competition moments (my father already pointed out some of the far more important moments):
2001 VCU Saturday-4th seed, challenges #1 in the semifinals (only 4, 5-team alliances that year) 2005 Annapolis Friday-wins Autodesk Visualization Award, Xerox Creativity Award. Dave Lavery wins Woodie Flowers Finalist Award 2005 Championship Friday- 116 goes 3-1-1, ranked 17th at end of day in Archimedes. More significantly, FVC Team 18 finishes ranked 5th, and is selected into the #2 alliance by team 27. Along with Teams 27 and 48, 18 wins the FIRST VEX Pilot Competition, completeing a 12-2 championship season. |
Re: Top 3 Days in your Team's History
Almost every day on team 25 seems like the best day we have had, but anyways. I can by no means pick 3 days because that is incredibly hard. We have had great moments through our 10 years. However, there is one event that sticks out.
Winning the championship in 2000 changed team 25 forever. On one end, we always built great robots after that and had to worry less about building bad robots. Thanks to the support of Bristol Myers Squibb. After winning, we were able to get BMS to support 5 other teams in the region and we ourselves started to spread the word of FIRST like its suppose to be. As the RINOS motto goes - We build FIRST to last. As you can see, this one event led to hundreds of other great moments. |
