Re: The Search for 111 & 71
Does this help? I wonder what new innovation team 71 thought of...

Re: The Search for 111 & 71
A little birdy told me that there's been a full picture of our robot buried somewhere on our website for at least a week... ;)

Re: The Search for 111 & 71
On that page with the webcam that JosephM posted there is a link to the beast.
I think the human player is loading the base with a tetra? |
Re: The Search for 111 & 71
By the looks of it they load their base with 4 tetras from the human player (5 seconds per tetra), then score them 2 at a time (10 seconds to score two). So, if they ran uninterrupted in a match, they could score up to ~12 tetras. With opposition, it looks like they'll be able to do 4-6. Not bad.
BTW: What team scores tetras 4 at a time? Once they got it going, it was pretty cool to watch. |

edit: Saw 71 in action. Seems like they have swerve drive. Move around pretty quickly and score pretty quickly too |

i am willing to wager that that there is a good portion of 2024 aluminum on that machine

Re: The Search for 111 & 71
I've finally seen both 111 and 71 ! I haven't seen Wildstang stack 18 yet but they're probably holding out until tomorrow ;) and 71 looks great, they missed a few practice matches this morning (*confusion and suspense*) but they repeatedly stack two at a time on any goal with this cool circular cone thing to stabilize the tetras. It's sooo cool, they're playing right now actually. Competition tomorrow is going to be crazy, I can't wait!

Re: The Search for 111 & 71
12 tetras by the beast huh? you said they drop two at a time... so is that on 6 different goals? or the nearest 2 goals to the human loader? can they use the auto loader at all? i'd really love to see a closer up pic if someone had one to share. :)
How's 111 performing, i'm real curious about there bot looking at the pictures... i see omni wheels i think, but they are point perpendicual to the arm direction... so does that arm rotate on a turret? or is there some secret in the drivetrain? |
Re: The Search for 111 & 71
well 71 is looking amazing, carry 4 tetras and cap 2 at a time while haveing 2 bots hit em! very nice guys.

Re: The Search for 111 & 71
After seeing the "secrets" of 71's success movies. Has anyone been "approached" before there matches today? I think I'd be a little concerned if I saw them on my opponent match list Friday morning. They're probably doing their scouting with a violin case in hand.
It's not their drivers and the robot people! Don't worry, there's a FIRST protection program you can enter if you beat them! I know of 1 team that's living it up in Aruba right now! So cut it out, and tell em your not gonna take it anymore! BTW Bill, I'm on your side OK? nothing personal... really! ugh... *packing my bags* |
Re: The Search for 111 & 71
these are my honest opinions of both 111 & 71 as of what i saw from 2 matches from both teams...
111 - fast and thier arm is rediculously fast... if they drivers get a little bit better with positioning i think they will be very dominant. 71 - not as dominant as they have been in past years. The design is great, but from the 2 matches i saw they only scored 4 and 6 respectively. i know the 4 match they had thier arm get caught up which im not sure what it was about. other teams that look very good 234, 16, 269. a lot of teams have great bots and once thier drivers get completely setteled they will be watched very closely and very good competition |

I'll take my digital camera to Chicago this weekend, but untill then, no promises.

Re: The Search for 111 & 71
![]() This was the best one I could find on my camera. If I had the team camera with me, I'd be able to put a better one up. Basically they have a huge huge crab drive, and the PVC arm with the PVC cone with a large gripper inside of it. They load tetras via human player, they usually put four on there and then they'll grab them two at a time from their robot base to cap a goal. |
Re: The Search for 111 & 71
They love their PVC

Re: The Search for 111 & 71
I have a ton of pictures of 71 during their first practice match at Purdue. They have yet to put on their side plates with their number and what not, but sure enough, it is them. They, as many have said, load 4 tetras on their robot in the human player zone and then the arm picks up two tets at a time and they cap. Pretty good crab drive, especially since it is their first time doing crab a member on the team told me. Impressive as always, it's too bad we didn't beat them in semifinals. 1/4 of a inch is what decided the match. It took our row away and gave them a row which won them the series. We had a blue tetra placed in the corner goal on our side, and we blocked 71's attempt to put two red tetras on our corner goal and they dropped the tets and one hit the ground, while the other hid the plexy glass side wall and just one part of the tetra was in our goal. We thought since it was being supported off the side wall, it wouldn't count and we didn't recap the goal and that lost the series for us. We were 1-1 and it was the deciding match. It was great competition though.
Here are some of the pics... ![]() |
Re: The Search for 111 & 71
What do the side things do? Do they fit in the box or deploy during the match? Tell me tell me tell me!

The side things come down during the match and act like bumpers to help them from tipping over, if I remember correctly. |
Re: The Search for 111 & 71
I just found another good one of 111 on the field after one of their matches.

Re: The Search for 111 & 71
Thanks a ton guys!!! Those are some great shots!
Looks like team 71 has come up with a pretty powerful design once again. Can they use both the human and auto loader? Also, I noticed they store tetras right there on the front of their bot -- has anyone knocked them off before they've been able to stack them on a goal? |

Re: The Search for 111 & 71
What I want to see happen to 71 or even 469 is for an opposing team to put one of their tetras on top, what would they do then? :D

I can't wait to see how these guys perform, it's a really interesting design and it seems people have mostly been very impressed with it. They did win Boilermaker and someone said they were voted "Best Offensive Robot" at that competition (I'm not sure who actually set up the vote, not FIRST obviously). In any case, photos like these just make me all the more anxious to go to nationals. |

Re: The Search for 111 & 71
I had discussed capping a robot that stored tetras on it's base with some people at the UTC regional. I wasn't going to say anything here, because it would work so much better against a team who isn't expecting it and I had already told a few people. If it was unexpected, I think it would be a worthwhile move on some of the robots that do this, however, Beatty would have been harder to cap than the original robot I saw that did this because Beatty's stack is always in the front of their bot with their arm behind it. The robot I saw at UTC capped with it's arm on the side of the robot closest to the goal, so you could come up from behind while they were capping a goal and cap thier remaining stack.

Re: The Search for 111 & 71
The team 71 bot was our alliance teammate in the Boilermaker Regional.
They have a strafing drivesystem that is very manueverable but can be a bit tippy due to its large arm. Its arm contains a 3 prong claw at the end with a circular rim around it that is attached to the arm. They just put the rim around the tetras that it holds on its base and picks up 2 at a time. It is a very innovative design and also won a few awards. BTW, that picture is from the final round of the Boilermaker Finals. Somehow, we still ended up winning. It was pretty funny when their battery fell out and they were riding on it. Also, it would be almost impossible to put a tetra on theirs because they keep their arm relativly close to or on their stack of tetras. 71 - 1024 - 269 Taking Home the Gold March 19, 2005 P.S. I want to say thanks to everyone who competed at the Boilermaker Regional for being such good competitions. I know I made some new friends and overall, you all made it a great expierience. |
