|
Re: Greater Toronto Regional

Team 1006 will be there, of course. I am so excited for the GTA Regional, it will be AWESOME!! GO EDDIE!!!!
P.S. What is the deal with awards this year? Are there 2 of everything? |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
Team 1305 will be there and can't wait. 700 people wow it must be nice to have all that support from your school.
|
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
it would be nice to see 1006, 1241, 1305 and several other teams again. school's always a tough hurdle to get over, especially since almost our entire team is made up of graduating students. maybe we'll see you guys again! GO TEAM 1558! if we go again, we'll try to grab top rookie seed again if we don't make it to the finals :)
|
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
NiagaraFIRST.org will be there in force. Teams 1114, 1503 and 1680 are eagerly anticipating the biggest regional in all of FIRST. We can't wait to see all of our good friends again, especially our neighbours from the south, Team 48.
I'll be the MC for the event, and I'm looking forward to seeing all of you. |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
While Team 188 wont be there physically, our spirit will be with all of the teams there, especially our "adopted" ;) team of 1558, who took the highest rookie seed at Waterloo with some sweet defence. There will also be scattered members of the team who couldnt make the trip to California, who will be cheering on everyone. Its sad to think that my last year with the team as a high school student wont include another amazing home event, but it heartens me to see how eager everyone is for this event to happen. I wish the best of luck to everyone there!

Re: Greater Toronto Regional
Team 1219 is eagerly awaiting the event. We will be there with about 50 - 100 supporters;although, i am sure theory 6 will out number us :D . We are also very eager to meet 639, 48, 1114 and other powerhouse teams.
|
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
Oh, Oh,I'll be there. My biggest job will be to keep Karthiks' ego in line  .
|
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
772 is going of course :). I cannot wait!!! I'm really eager to see teams from Finger Lakes such as 1547 and 639. I personally have never been to this regional so it should be even better!
|
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
Team 854 will be there we are all very excited after Waterloo!
|
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
1140 is going to be there. It's going to be so weird to not know any of the teams there. We're 1 out of 7 or 8 US teams and 1 out of 3 Michigan teams!! All are welcome to our pits, so come and say "Hi" I look forward to meeting new teams that I would have otherwise never gotten to meet.
|
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
772 will definitely be there as Andrew said.. My 3rd year there, hopefully the best:).. Good luck to everyone! Hopefully they sell better chocolate at the *hershey centre* :) .. 188 .. not there.. what happened? hope you guys could come! Wow team 48 w00t w00t!:P and the Whole Niagra Gang! I wonder is 771 SWAT is going to be there:P! Good Luck Again.

Team 865 will be there for the fourth time. So sad that this will be my last year as I am finishing high school this year :( But I had alot fun and learning experience with FIRST which is the most important part.
Good luck everyone and see you all on Thursday. Drop by our pit and say hi. |

I think its pretty clear from last weekend that 1305 is the new Canadian powerhouse team. I saw them push Truck Town across the field one match. TRUCK TOWN! Nobody pushes truck town, and they made it look easy. That drive system they have is something else. Nice custom build 2 speed with 4 CIM's. Tank tread system, with some secret tread compound ;) Its nice, real nice. I expect big things from this team in the near future. |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
Team 48 Delphi E.L.I.T.E. will be there for the fourth consecutive year. We look forward to seeing all the great Canadian teams and our friends from up north. We also eagerly anticipate the return pairing of the Canada's Wonderland announcing/MC duo - Steve W and Karthik! May Steve's hair be loud and Karthik's mouth be....not so loud. :D
FYI, if anyone is in the Niagara Falls area, we'll be on the Canadian side for about four hours starting around noon Wednesday. Feel free to track us down and hang out with us, if you like. |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
Like Karthik said team 1503 will be there with pride.

Re: Greater Toronto Regional
Repeating what out members have said before Team 772 is going to be there, with INCENTIVE, so watch out Karthik, it might get very tiring for you there. :D Hope to see you all there, too bad about 188, team 1503, 188 and 772 would have made a greate alliance just as in Waterloo. Well Good luck to all the teams out there hope to see you on Thursday

So I printed out 200 flyers for 639 with field layouts on the back. Didn't have time to laminate them but I did get clear sheet protectors so it's similar. There's enough for one per drive team per team at GTR. Bring your own dry-erase pen and clipboard if you'd like. We don't have enough of those to give out. Personally, a field to draw on was very useful for me at FLR.
Below is a small pic of it. edit: The upside-down "BLUE" at the top of the page was cut off when printing... which made no sense. |

GTA Regional looks awesome as it is. A lot of highly competetive teams out there. I can see that spirit will be high, I am so pumped! The SWAT 771 machine is lookin nice (oh yeah Shyra)............GTA REGIONAL, the biggest regional in FIRST, will be awesome!

We finished inspection earlier than usual (2pm) and did well in practice matches, capping up to 6 at various times. Teams had 6 practices matches (3 sessions) so they were spread pretty far apart in time. Lucas had lots of time after our last match to finish autonomous - knock down right hanging tetra while holding a tetra, ready to cap the center home goal like the Martians. I haven't watched too many teams, but of those I have, 1596, 1305, and the NiagaraFIRST bots stick out. The arena looks oddly empty with only one field, but the atmosphere is still there and I am amazed to be back here. Whoooo. Looking forwards to competing in about 9 hours. |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
Wow guys! Sounds like this regional is running great (especially without us :P). Keep the info coming! Although this isn't the SoCal thread, 188's shining over here. The robot's doing great and our team is more spirited than ever. Thing's are really looking good for us.
(Oh, and good job 1558, our team is very proud of you guys.) |

Re: Greater Toronto Regional
Good old Mississauga. From what I experienced Thursday, it still appears that Greater Toronto is going to end up as one of the friendliest, best run, most competitive regionals in all of FIRST again this season. I absolutely love coming here, and I can't wait for Friday and Saturday. Best of luck to all teams!
Today is April 1. Steve W and Karthik have vowed to repeat their mischief at our expense from last season. We shall tread lightly when returning to our pit this morning..... But know this.....Karthik......I can break you easily, you twig. And we have some very sharp scissors in our pit, Steve. They'd be perfect for cutting through that mass of Technicolor goop you have in your hair. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!! Finally, I can connect to the wireless router from my laptop in the pit, but I can't get on the Internet - any ideas on how to fix that? I hear it works great for some teams, but not so well for others. |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
WOW! Friday was awesome! Congrats 1114 (Simbotics) for being in first place after today. You're an awesome team and it's great to see a GM Canada Team in first! Congrats to all of the award winners today.
Theory6: That was crazy with all those people there! Waldo girls: Spirit is awesome, we love you! Everyone else: Can't wait for Saturday, I'm sure it will be great! |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
Maybe it's due to the number of lesser experienced teams here, but there were more penalties at GTR than I've seen at any other regional, in person or webcast.
The day got better as it went on as everyone improved functionality. I believe the high score was 105-0. So 639 ended with a 4-2 record. First match was lost when partners got three 10pt penalties and second was lost when one of our drivers straddled the loading zone but apparenltly was touching (there's a little piece of cloth that hangs down?). Anyway, the refereeing was consistent and Steve's explanations after every match are useful for the audience and players. I've been impressed by 1114, 854, 1305, 84, 1596, and 703 in no particular order. We added the ability to hold a tetra during auton to our robot yesterday and tested auton with it last night. It worked wonderfully today and starting the driver period with an owned goal and a tetra in your claw ready to cap is very useful. gotta go. |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
So far this has been amazing our robot is workig great and our human player team is doing really well also! I can't wait till tomorrow!
|
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
For us, I was surprised that we have such a strong robot. We played mostly defence and we pushed everyone around like pushing paper boxes.
Good Game Everyone and Good Luck Tomorrow! |

Re: Greater Toronto Regional
the competition here is really fierce!! its amazing! yeah we took some unecessary penalties, but hey thats what you get for not following the rules. but of course match 55 really stood out for us =D
great strategy that 48 came up with, and we took down the alliance with 772, 1305 and 296 down! of course we could not have won that one because of a penalty taken by 1305, but then again we lost our second match because of penalties. we played some solid defense and almost shutout 1305 =D. solid ramming helped so much. and we apologize for any lost foam you guys suffered because i remember seeing some come off =) i congratulate all the teams (especially the rookies and even more for 1596) for doing so well in the seeding rounds. BTW does anybody have a video of match 55? i would really like it |

I just wanted to say a huge congrats to the GTR winners, 1114, 1305 and 1511. Sounds like it was a really exciting time, I'm sorry I missed it.
Also, a quick note to 1114 , awesome comeback from the Waterloo regional guys.. I know you were having your problems there so it's awesome to hear that you ended up winning this weekend! As for 48, it was a bummer not seeing you guys this year. boo on exams being a week away and me not being able to skip out on a weekend of studying. Great job on getting to the finals! Take care and hopefully I'll be around next year.. though I still say you should check out the Waterloo regional. (and Travis thanks again for helping out Dave and I last year) In any case, I'm sure no one wants to listen to me drone on. Congrats everyone, from what I gather it was a great regional! -Ann-Marie Winkler |

Karthik, thanks so much for all the support!! :D 229, thanks for coming to cheer us on! :) I guess I am a bit in shock still and dont know how all of this has happened... except that our team put in a ton of hard work, and with a little bit of luck, and some amazing alliance partners, this was an amazing regional. Thanks for all the congrats from the teams! And I do have one huge thanks left... thanks to all my kids for all of your hard work, long hours, endless scouting, tireless chearing, amazing energy, awesome driving, great coaching, and what a great robot! You guys are my inspiration! You are the reason I can stay up countless hours to finish up scouting or paperwork, or robot stuff. I dont know how we keep doing it, but we do. You guys deserve it all, you are truely an amazing rookie team :) (Or as Ed says, perhaps we really arent rookies anymore!) And lastly, I have to say thanks for all the appreciation you guys have shown. Never could I have expected to be so important to the team. You guys really made the mentors(and especially me) feel special, and we are so happy for all of you. I love you guys!!! |

Also congrats to the finalists you gave us, the crowd, an amazing show. See you at nationals :) |
Weekend Recap
What an amazing weekend we had in Toronto. The event went off without a hitch, and the Hershey Center was rockin' all weekend long. For the sake of brevity and organization, my thanks and congrats are in this thread.
Despite teams only playing 8 matches, no team was able to finish the qualifying rounds with an undefeated record. Team 1114 finished on top of the pile because of average RP of 18.37. This was definitely not the same Team 1114 that was in Waterloo. All three NiagaraFIRST.org teams made huge strides, including an autonomous mode which gave them 2/3 of the home row after 4 seconds. Teams 1305, 1241 and 48 all finished with one loss as well. After the alliance selection process, it was evident that we'd be in for some great eliminations round. Team 1114 picked 1305, and then picked up the steal of the day by getting Team 1511 in the second round. Teams 1241, 772 and 1006 formed an all GM alliance. Team 48, who also improved greatly from their earlier regionals picked 1503 (one of the triplets) and 84. The fifth seeded alliance was also very strong, Teams 703, 1596 and 1680. With all these strong capping alliances, it was clear that the elimination rounds were going to exciting. The tone was set early when the top seeded alliance (1114, 1305, 1511) put up a score of 128. There was a big upset in QF3, as teams 1241, 772 and 1006 went out in two straight. They actually had out scored their opponents by 39 points in match 1, but took 40 points in penalties... ouch. When the dust settled from the semis, we were left with a final which was bound to be exciting. On one side you had 1114, 1305 & 1511 and on the other side it was 48, 1503 & 84. Consider these storylines... - 1114 and 48 were finalists together, one year ago in Toronto. They came within a whisker of winning the whole thing. The teams are best of friends, but have had some very tough battles in the past. - Two NiagaraFIRST.org robots battling it out in the finals. It was definitely weird seeing double out there. Having the same robot on both alliances, is a unique feeling. These two teams worked hand in hand all season long, which made strategizing for the finals quite unique. The first match of the finals went to the 1114, 1503 & 1680 alliance, 40-31. This set the stage for one of the most exciting matches I've seen in FIRST. In autonomous mode, 1114 knocks one hanging tetra, and caps home center , while 1511 knocks their hanging tetra. On the other side, 1503 who has the same routine as 1114, missing the home center, and ends up containing the tet. This turns out to be crucial. Team 48 comes out hand plays some tough zone defense, which gets in the way of both 1114 and 1305. 1511 picks up the slack and does a lot of capping for the alliance. With about 10 seconds left the 48 alliance has control of the center row. 1114 gets to the autoloader at the 5 second mark. They somehow manage to pick up a tetra, turn and cap the side goal as time expires. Everyone in the arena realizes that that last cap is going to make it very close. The score comes in.... 32-31 for the number one seeds! It was absolutely amazing. The perfect way to end an awesomely exciting weekend. |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
congrats to the winners, finalists and all the other teams that made it to the elimination rounds! it was amazing how much the 3 GM triplet teams improved. you guys capped so much faster than at waterloo. it was insane.
too bad our team wasn't chosen, it definitely looked bad in our last game when we had a short circuit. our robot wasnt experiencing any real difficulties, but that looked bad for sure. also our second game was lost carelessly because of loading box penalties, but hey...that happened to the 772 alliance as well. despite all that, the regional was great! congrats to all the teams and especially all the rookies for doing so well! P.S. we were thinking any of the alliances that needed a bot to take down a couple good cappers for them could have chosen us. =\ |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
Quote:
I too was surprised that you weren't chosen for the eliminations. Your team constantly showed great defensive prowess by using your arm to block teams trying to cap. Congratulations on a great rookie season. |

adam, its ok. unexpected things always happen. it was great seeing you with an accident t-shirt! thanks |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
Congrats to the Winners!
Our scouting reports had you guys on top and practically unbeatable. The last match was incredibly tense with 48 out to block any scoring attempts. Just a personal footnote; I didn't understand how we were overlooked during alliance selections. I thought with a decent 20th position and with a higher RP than most would have been a good choice. Guess there's always next year! Gerbs, Team 1620 |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
Congrats to the winners! I had an awesome time and was thoroughly impressed by the high level of play by many robots at the event, especially 1114 and their automated capping and autoloading routines.
Although both of our alliance partners seemed to have devastating problems during quarterfinals, that didn't stop us from making our mark. Thanks to the judges for the GM Industrial Design Award (that's 3 outta 4 years!) We'll be back next year. See everyone at Championships. |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
The Greater Toronto Regional was a blast. We at team 1404 would like to congratulate the winners, all of which were fantastic robots (we played with 1114 and against them in two consecutive matches, and were able to see their power from both sides).
Despite the fact that we missed the playoffs (our final game, lost by one point, and that dropped us from 7th to 21st, from being a picking team to out of it altogether [although, this is nothing compared to what the blue alliance must have felt in the final]), we still enjoyed the whole event. This was my first and last time at the event as a team member, as I graduate this year. Hopefully, I'll be back in some sort of mentoring role next year with 1404. Good work all, and I hope to be there next year. |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
The GTR was amazing. Thank you to 1114 for picking us for an alliance we worked well together and 1511 you guys were great. I knew when I saw 1114 on Thursday that they would do great in the competition and you guys did. We made a great alliance and maybe we could do it again in Atlanta. I would also like to thank everyone that made this regional possible.

Re: Greater Toronto Regional
A well deserved win for 1114, 1305 and 1511, congratz!
As for Karthik, you rock man! I've never seen an MC with so much energy. Thanks to 781 for the gearbox when ours broke. As dissapointing as our quarterfinal matches were, it was still a kick a** regional and there is no other regional in which I would rather be. I certainly hope that out team will come back next year, though I will be a college mentor then... This regional has always been the best regional and I want to thank EVERYONE involved for making my FIRST experience the best I ever had. This was my last FIRST regional as a student, and what a ride it has been! Thank you and see you all at Atlanta! |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional - Scoring Data anyone?
Thanks to all for a fantastic event!
Does anyone (ideally, the official scoring-data-entry folks) have a copy of the match details for the GTA Regional... we wanted to run some statistical analysis, but our data was incomplete/inaccurate... (something including the penalties...? the data posted on the first site does not include this...) Thanks! Congratulations to all teams, and thanks again for a wonderful time! That was fun ^_^ Team 1346 (Trobotics) wants to thank Team 1241 (Theory6) for being such awesome hosts and giving us a place to sleep ;) It was great cheering with you guys. Props to Waldo and Rolling Thunder for your cheer squad, you guys made cheering awesome. Our whole team was rookies, only person who had been on the team before was our teacher. Now that we know what this is all about, we'll be a force to be recokend with next year >=D

It was truly a pleasure to travel to Toronto and participate in the 2005 Toronto regional at the Hershey Centre. The staff, judges, referees, announcers were all truly gracious professionals. Our team had the time of their lives; plus with the help of #1114 and #1305, we won!
Our team, Rolling Thunder #1511, has a photo-sharing web site at rollingthunder.smugmug.com or through our team web site at www.penfieldrobotics.com. Although I don't have a video clip of Steve getting "capped" by a tetra, there are lots of photos and a few short video clips there; more to come this week. |
Re: Greater Toronto Regional
I will try and find if any of the people on 1511 got it on tape i know i didnt but there were a few others that were filming. I will make another highlight reel for our team in a few days also

What are you talking about? You must have been at another regional. If it were true someone would have gotten a photo or something. |
