Edit: This is not a 2005 match. If you want 2005 matches, scroll down to the next post :)

The best fought match I saw (not this year because I haven't been to a regional yet) was in 2003, during Stack Attack. It was the 3rd and final match of the finals, and teams 294 and 696 were going up against 60 and someone else (somebody tell me who it was!)

Stack attack was a hugely defense oriented game, and this match was no exception. 696, and their robot Heather, was aggressive, and descored (not illegal) quickly. Team 294 was this little inept U-looking thing with a pole arm (kind of an arm). Team 60 had these fearsome-looking batwings that were see-through on one end but not on the other. On paper, we looked overmatched. But we sure gave them a run for their money...

About 30 seconds were left, and it was anybody's game. Team 60 made their final run for the ramp and were on top. Team 696 was on the fritz, they were on and off, and they weren't much help at this point. Only a few totes were on each side.

Team 294 made their run for the ramp. We made it on top, basically on Team 60 (we kind of broke them). All of a sudden, team 696 gets power back and charges up the ramp with about 5 seconds left. They make it up, but roll back down as time expired.

Team 60 had ramp hooking claws. They grabbed onto the mesh, and at the last second they retracted them (usually). However, in this match, 696's bump as they charged up the ramp jammed the grabber and when they tried to retract them, they ripped up the ramping mesh. The ripped wire mesh was touching 294.

According to the rules, not touching the side of the ramp was what the bonus was given for. However, what should the refs do if the ramp was broken? Eventually, the refs went with 60, and they won the match and the regional.

The best part of the match was the crowd involvement. They were going absolutely nuts during the last 30 seconds of this match. When the match was over, and the ref made his announcement, everybody knew they had just witnessed something special.

That is one of my favorite FIRST memories, thanks to 696 and 968 (alliance captain but sitting out), as well as team 60.

alliance 2 vs alliance 7 at nyc.
694 and 2 more on alliance 2 vs 759 and our 2 alliance partners. (sorry i'm relaly jetlagged at the moment, having memory lapses :o )
We managed to make it into 4 rounds! First game was won by alliance 2, second by alliance 7, then the tiebreaker ended in a tie, but alliance 2 won the tie breaker the second time round.

Our final Quarterfinal at BAE was pretty cool. It was teams 1276, 157 and 190 vs 133, 1519 and I forgot the last team number. Anyways in autonomous 133 went to cap the center goal and was off by a little bit. 190 capped the center goal in the home row. Right when autonomous ended 1276 took off down the field and grabbed 133's tetra with their claw. The tetra fell down 133's arm. Meanwhile 190 was causing havoc over on the red side (the alliance of 133, 1519 and one other team) 157 was capping the blue homerow. Once 157 got done capping the homerow they also ran down the field and caused chaos. Not a single tetra was stacked by the red alliance. When it came down to it they won by two tetras contained in the base of a goal in there home rows. We had a 30 point penalty and lost but it was a really high energy match and the crowd was going wild the entire time.

the best matches i have ever seen came this past weekend at the midwest regional where the 4th alliance with team 648, team 79, and team 107 almost had one of the greatest upsets in the history of FIRST. we played powerhouse teams in the 1st alliance like team 71, team 111, and a good 537 team. we lost the first match, won the second in a great defensive struggle by one point, then lost the last match by one because we got an aggressive driving penalty. those were the best matches i have ever seen and was in.

it was 1126, 378 (not 48) and 1 vs 279, 67 and 274. and that was one crazy match i thought that we lost by a few.

The best match I remember was in 2002. The national semifinals. Mainly, team 60 vs. team 71. There was so much talk about those two robots that year. I remember, before the match, thinking "Well, this is what everyone wanted to see." It wasn't a very exciting match, but it was the ultimate matchup of torque robots.

I agree. Those where some pretty hair raising matches there. I think I almost went deaf when they announced the winner of the second match. :o Those were definitely some great matches, both sides were absolutely amazing and played their hearts out. I'm glad that I was there to see it all happen and honored that my team was a part of it.

i accualy have a couple.
1) 2003 arcamedes finals....469 and 111 vs 201 and 47. 47 and 469 were going at it all match. 201 and 111 where doing what they do. 15 secs left in the match 469 and 111 get up on the ramp. 201 tries to get up there...NOPE...they fliped over onto their backs....47 tries to get up there....NOPE....they flip onto their back.

2) midwest regional this past weekend. 383 903 65 vs 45 269 706. I can't remember wat match it was but i do know that it was in the semis. 65 and 45 capping back and forth. 65 would cap then 45 would cap. back and forth back and forth. it was a great match.

i have to agree the mwr in the semi finals with 648, 79, and 107 against 71, 111, 537 were very good matches. we lost the first one by alot and won the second one and if i remember correctly we were very close in scores.. and we lost he last match but it was a very very good match also. im glad im on 648 because our drivers did such a great job this year it was awesome.

Re: Best Matches (best fought not score)

yeah, there were tons of high scoring matches at buckeye, I was too busy trying to get the arm working on our robot so I didnt pay much attention to the others. The greatest match I remembered with our robot was our last on on the first day of competition, forgot what teams we were with or against but our alliance robots, didnt work, one of them was completely disabled, the other's arm didnt work, and ours was the only one against all three of the other team hehe. even though we only scored 10 points, that was like one of the only times our arm actually worked, all the other times, the fuses got burnt out...air hoses were ripped off from other robots...or it just sat there and did nothing.
Our best match in Florida was probably the final match against 179, 233, and some other team, we had 1251 and the "cutting edge" team with us. We played defence and we just ran out there and rammed all the other robots and we came back with 2 huge dents on the sides, even though we lost, we were still happy and everyone was going crazy, screaming and yelling, so it was a great match and everyone had a fun time.

Re: Best Matches (best fought not score)

The best fought match I have ever seen was the third match of the Finals last year at VCU. 616 and 165 vs. 33 and 977. After losing the first match and winning the second both alliances were confident that they would win but 977 had figured out our strategy. We pushed the movable goal into 33's ball hole to give them a little trouble scoring because they had a "NBA shooter" that never missed. The only way we could beat them was by hanging. By the time we got back to the platform, 977 was already there and played defense on us the rest of the match. Eventually we were able to push them out of the way and then we both tried to hang.

I can't find the exact score, but we lost by 5 points.
