What's the most obsessed thing you've ever done for your team?

Re: Most obsessed
Last year the night before the scrimage I we were doing finnal practice before and doing backing when a gear sheared off the robot. It was like ten at night. So what I did ws run home and get it welded. On the way home i got pulled over for running a red light :ahh: . We I didnt get a ticket for that. :) S i got home and got it welded and we had that robot running that night.

Re: Most obsessed
Well the night we were packing for our regional we realized...Uuuuh oh..No trailer :ahh: So a few of us went and dug our captains trailer out of the snow at about 11 at night, then brought it to the shop and spent the next 4 hours getting stuff together and packed away nicely for the competition...made it home at 3:30am, that's what we like to call commitment :)

Re: Most obsessed
Heres a good one: in 2003, my senior year in highschool, our team was extrememly limited on things that we could use to make our robot. that, mixed in with a few other unforseeable obstacles, led us to only have 1 and a half of our tank treads done.. no chasis, no electronics, no appendage or anything else. The last week we were blessed with a machine shop and unlimited time in it. needless to say the final build week myself and a few others spent about 110 hours in the shop . we went directly from school to the machine shop, left at about 3 or 4 in the morning, got about 2 hours of sleep and then repeated the cycle. we got it all done, even with about 4 hours to practice driving.

Re: Most obsessed
In 2003, the robot had to shipped in a few hours. We just finish getting all of the arms and such on the robot and had it up and running. Then someone had the genius idea of weighing the robot. We get the scale and the robot is .5 lbs under weight, but just one problem we forgot to weigh the battery. So its 3:00 am the robot is overweight and fedex is coming at 9:00am. Me and a few others stay in the shop taking all of the arm systems off the robot that we had spent all day putting on and got the robot to proper weight. Its hard spending weeks and weeks designing and building an arm and have to take it off before it is even used. It took all day to put it together but only took 2 hours to take it apart. Needless to say we have learned our lesson, but this year the battery is already taking care of. . .

Re: Most obsessed
a great deal of my wardrobe is pink (when i do laundry, i divide it into jeans, whites, color, and PINK) lol my room is painted pink, i wear a bright pink bikini at competitions and run around with pink body paint on, i paint every willing guy and girl's nails pink for competition, i'm dying my hair pink for Nationals (our scout leader has pink hair and so does our human player, and at nat'ls there will be even more people with pink hair), i lose my voice at competitions screaming cheers, and i spent countless hours during the build season creating trading cards, working on chairman's award submission, going out to KSC to help out in whichever way possible, sacrificing free time, sleeping in on weekends, and valuable sleeping time to work on various projects like graphic design and sorting through massive amounts of pictures. :p even at the end of the build period every year during crunch time i have a slight panic attack when i realize all of the things that still have to get done for both robotics and school and the fact that it doesnt appear that i have the time to do both while getting some sleep as well... but i love it and wouldnt have it any other way. :]
Edit: not to mention how much time i spend here on Chief Delphi while i could be doing something "important" like Homework or sleep! |

:) I've seen the shop clock say 3 or 4 AM a few times. I've also subjected myself to a rediculous travel schedule for FIRST. I had a test in Boston on a Friday at 3 PM and taken a bus back to New York, then a train back to Long Island, arriving home at 1 AM, going to sleep at 2:30 AM and getting up at 6 AM for the last day of SBPLI. |
Re: Most obsessed
well i wouldnt say im obessed...buuuuuuuuuuuut...
im 2001 i dyed my hair purple and "red'' it looked pink. i wore it for like 2 weeks...Even to my relatives funeral...that was funny seeing the minister's face when i had pink and purple hair....fun times..fun times |
Re: Most obsessed
Can I nominate someone other than myself?
I don't know if I'd called it "obsessed," but definitely crazy, insane, dedicated, and ballsy. Team 1241 - Theory6 was part of the winning alliance at Waterloo. As the elimination rounds progressed, their role became a 100% defensive one. Problem was, they were actually an offensive robot - decent arm, and they could score tetras. It's just that they had an incredibly powerful drivetrain, which rocked at playing defense, and the alliance had decided playing defense was the best way to help the alliance. So they converted their machine into a defensive juggernaut. Their arm was just asking to be damaged while playing defense, plus it was a tipping hazard for both themselves, and any robots they wanted to push. So they took it off... but I don't mean they unbolted their arm and removed it from the chassis. Their arm was WELDED to the chassis. THEY CUT THEIR ARM CLEAN OFF!!! Come on people! These guys KNEW they were competing again in FIVE days at the GTR, and they fully expect to re-weld the arm on there, but geez. I would have a heart attack if anyone took a saw to our robot, and hacked off the top 4 feet of it... WOW... just WOW. FYI, this was no chump-change arm either. This is arguably one of the nicest arms in all of FIRST. -SlimBoJones... |

And under penalty of death I am not allowed to [i]ever[/url] do anything like that again. |

Re: Most obsessed
for my first regional (Philly's) I spent over $40 on spirit stuff....I'm a rookie lol what can i say I'm all for spirit
|
Re: Most obsessed
Well there's been plenty of stuff, but storing the robot in my house for 3 months is a good one.
|
Re: Most obsessed
I probably clocked the most hours in our machine shop making parts for our robot this season...and I'm a rookie
I do FIRST stuff before Homework (I had a 4 day weekend that I spent mainly working on the robot..I did homework at 12 am before school the next day, lol. I spend a lot of time on Chief Delphi or other FIRST websites...which seem to distract me from uhh, more important things...like homework I should be doing. :ahh: I love robotics...I was sad to part with our robot at regionals for such a long period until nationals...and since i couldn't take it home with me, i took the next best thing, the Operator Interface...its hanging off my wall right now. :D |

Re: Most obsessed
I wrote an 95 page business plan for my team. And revised it three times, I also have written 3 chairman's award, 3 executive summarys, the team handbook, the team application, kept track of all hours, clocked the most hours two years in a row, and won 2 Regional Chairman's Awards. Also I help code the team website, did all of the wiring, supervise drive team practice, pay for the websites for our team, painted the crate twice, and besides the Chairman's Award submission in my second year I had a broken foot so wasn't even allowed in the robot shop due to safety reasons. I think I am a little obssesive, I jumped high in the air when they said 100 page business plan during our winning chairman's award speech this year and everyone looked at me, and finally understood when they announced my teams name and went on to tackle a teammate, almost knock out a ref, grabthe metal, hug Mark Leon and then sat in the stands and cried. Not something everyone wants to admit. But man was I happy.

Re: Most obsessed
The most most obsessed thing i have done for my team was get the team logo tattooed onto my arm.

Re: Most obsessed
Well, mine isn't very exciting... but as a freshman on a rookie team , the only freshman mind you, I couldn't really do much for the team. I don't know how to do programing, welding just looks dangerous to me, and no one in the shop offered me a job because any job that I could do was so small and insignificant that... why bother? Yet I came. Almost everyday after school for six weeks, from 3 to 7 at least... just sitting, waiting, hoping, for a job to come up. Everyone else gives up so much time to work and build a robot, but it's even tougher giving up so much time waiting for your chance to build a robot. Feeling like you're useless to the team. But I kept going, dedicated, obsessed with the idea that today I'd have a job, today I'll contribute, today I'd be a part of the team. Well today, I am the team photographer (I finally found a job, and a use for my darkroom), and today I know that I'll be in Atlanta April 20th-24!

Re: Most obsessed
other than all of the late nights working in the machine shop, the most obsessed thing i have done was 2 weeks ago at the chesapeake regional. even though i had graduated i still go back. so after a week of finals, iwent down to the naval academy on friday and saturday. but i couldnt get there my self so i asked a former teamate for thursday, i drove done 9 in the morning from ambler (suburb of philly) to the naval academyfor the day and got back home 10 at night. 150 miles one way. then the next day asked another old HS friend and drove down 7 in the morning saturday and got home 10 at night. 300+ miles each day. people even told me i was obsessed. but it was all worth it seeing the team's hard work pay off and see them winning regional chairmans for the 3rd straight year. (past 2 were in philly)

Re: Most obsessed
Generally known as the most obsessed on my team becuase A. tell me a number I'll tell you a name b. Tell me a number or name I'll describe a robot c. I spend at least 4 hours a day on chiefdelphi. Also came in second in attendance this year. I helped in pretty much every area of the robot. And was always one of the last to leave. Of course this is probably helped by the fact I'm in eighth grade and don't have homework.

The first year I dyed my hair, I went to Regionals, and decided the blue was to light of a color. So, prior to nationals, I decided on a MUCH darker blue - fully knowing that I was to go to a Prom two weeks later (not even my own). HA HA! Whoops, not even bleach took that out it was so dark! I continue to dye my hair, but I've aged quite a bit, and have some experience with the blues now. My professors find it comical in the IT world - blue hair and a business suit. :] As for my rooms (parents house and my apartment) my walls are plastered end to end in Robotics "doings", memorabilia, and Bob the Builder. Robot carpet, ROBOTS boxes, pictures, pictures, and pictures, everywhere. Even the memories and photos of sleeping with Robots! :p I travel over an hour home during the build season every weekend to work with my alma mater, and although not as obsessed as I used to be. My mind is a "human database". Give me a name, a location, or a number.... and I can start spitting out information..... its like a broken slot machine... one bit after another bit just being output to you from my internal database. My build seasons consisted of over 400 logged hours in the shop working when I was in high school, and I shocked myself at the hours I was still able to put in this year. I choose to spend my Birthdays at competition rather than anywhere else. In 2003 I made the trip to Chessy for the weekend of my birthday, just so I could be near Robots and Competition. It was so amazing, that I knew I had to do it again. This year, I made the trip all the way to Pittsburgh for my birthday..... because I'd rather be near robots than anyone or anything else. |
Re: Most obsessed
I agreed to be a chaperon... and now, instead of sneaking down to Georgia on a plane I have to take an 8 hour bus ride with teens, teens I say!!! Oh the insanity! And come to think of it, I don't think I missed a single meeting during this past build season and I don't know if anyone else on our team can say that (well, they could always say it, but would they be telling the truth?)

Re: Most obsessed
I spent nearly $300 of my own money to buy parts for the robot, and I wasn't even sure if I was going to be reimbursed or not.
I did end up getting reimbursed. But, still $300?! Do you know how much that means to a 16-year-old without a job?! |
Re: Most obsessed
My story takes place in 03, when they extended the build season. Myself and 6 of my other team members were working at the shop when it started snowing. So we all took a 20 minute break, ran home to get food blankets and toothbrushes, then came back to the shop and kept working. We decided that if we still had work to do we would have to spend the night in the shop. :)

Re: Most obsessed
ok I have done many obsessed things...as leslie said...much of the wardrobe is pink...I got Jim Kennedy to say "Go Pink" at a VIP luncheon...that was cool...after competitions we wear our medals...this time on monday when we go back to school we have 3 medals to wear from the year...i have made backgrounds on my com celebrating my team...me (plus a few other people like courtney and maia) came up with the idea for nerdstock 2k5 shirts...so many stupid things like that...i love my team...my life would not be the same without it...last week i bleached my hair and dyed it pink...but i ran out of bleach so it turned out pretty bad...obsession for robotics...isnt it great??
I also dyed scout nazi's hair pink lol...that was funny...I bought christmas lights in all pink...do you know how hard it is to find those? i wasnt even sure they made them...i spent an hour in walmart going through every single box to see if they existed...and they do...wanna see them? in our pit in atlanta! |
Re: Most obsessed
Well i think reading endless forums on chiefdelphi is obsessive. After FLR i came home and couldn't stop talking about robotics. At first my parents thought i had gone insane with all the capping and autonomus mode and robotics things.

Re: Most obsessed
Pro'lly not THAT extreme, but I HAVE been spending seven day weeks at robotics. We're now in on sundays. -sighs-
But for obsession? I come in when I'm ill, I come in when I'm injured, I come in when I've had a lack of sleep (which pro'lly isn't a good idea, since I'm working with machines), hrm... Once I ended up being used as a weight for the robot to see if it could get up the ramp with so many pounds on it, meaning I was sitting on this thing that randomly moved and nearly fell off it a million times, holding the battery with my legs on either side of the wheels... dangerous 'nuff for me. |
Re: Most obsessed
I wear a huge suit that makes me look like either a) Master Chief from HALO or b) Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story (those are the two responses I have recieved most from the other teams.)
